Seriously. A lot of you claiming to be worried about it's box office due to the number of 3D screens seem to be forgetting it will get a 2D release as well.

Who would want to see it in 2D if 3D is available? This could become a huge oversea flop for Cameron considering there are almost no such screens in Europe. Unless the marketing won't even mention the 3D part.

Well, I hope so, I don't want to watch it in 2D. In fact I could imagine after Avatar (if it's actually that good) I wouldn't want to watch any FX-movie in mere 2D again.

I disagree JP, Europe is getting quite advanced in numbers of 3d screens and there is still 10-12months to go. Alot can happen in the meantime.
I'm not sure which part you are looking at but a 100miles radio around me crossing in diffrent countries only showed 3-4 3D.

I can't wait to see people's reactions to the eventual trailer (or whatever 'first look' we get) for Avatar.

The expectations of everyone for this film are stratospheric. So much so there are going to be huge sways of fanboys who are going to be gutted no matter what it looks like.

However, in saying that. If anyone can pull this film off it's Cameron.

But time is marching on and the rumblings that this film is increasingly becoming a case of the Emperor's New Clothes are only increasing.

All filmmakers who have seen footage of Avatar have been blown away by it. Jon Favreau, Katzenberg, and this choice quote from Soderbergh:

“Yeah, I went to the set,” said Steven Soderbergh, when Total Film quizzed him recently. “I can tell you that shit was mindblowing. The shit I saw was crazy. Like, craaaazy. I think it’s gonna be gigantic. It’s gonna be another one of those benchmarks. There’s gonna be Before that movie and After."

Neogaf is the only place I've seen people hyped for the movie and I am, as how can you go wrong with sci-fi, JC and 3D?

First and foremost I expect a visual style throughout the movie unlike anything we've seen before. The look of Avatar has to be very, very unique, from both the technical and artistical point of view. It has to ooze style, but still look real and all the usual CGI effects have to be miles above what we've seen in big FX productions like Star Wars or LotR before. Speaking of Star Wars, I had the same expectations with Phantom Menace. Something unique, but the movie didn't deliver on the that in the slightest.

I expect a revolution in regards to CGI effects, not just an evolution. There can't be any bad animations, especially no animations that look like a muppet on top of a green screened motion capture actor. It has to look truly convincing. No low resultion textures either. I expect top class for every detail. We're speaking the face mask of the fishy guy from Pirates at least.

I don't want a predictable plot, either. I simply want a new cinema experience. Is that too much to ask for? That would only be Cameron's fault. I still believe it's possible to deliver something like that and I'm really looking forward to this movie but there is a high chance that Avatar won't deliver in the end.

To be fair, many of these guys are literally blown away by everything. New Coca Cola commercial? Blown away! Latest iToy? Blown away! Square watermelon? Blown away!
Doesn't mean anything (yet).

Well, a friend in Lightstorm said that '...when you are running through the jungle of Pandora and [their] tails are moving front of your face, your brain will melt', but i guess we all knew that anyways.

So i am expecting more of an experience as opposed to a visual treat, in fact im expecting Pandora to look like the giant plant jungle in Ep3.
Although the Big Rock Candy Mountain is supposed to 'amazing'

In my country we don't even have digital cameras as standart, there's like five digital cameras in total. There's just no money to be made if they invest in digital, we already have tons of comercials, although, thanks to that, we have one of the lowest ticket prices in Europe, 5,20€ with no discount, like monday, or a student card.

There's a 3D screen near where I live, and I'd rather see it in 2D. Can't stand 3D, last time I watched a 3d movie I felt very, very uncomfortable the entire time.

You know what, I did say whoa when I saw the t-shirt. And admit it, it's better to up this thread than making a new one :lol

Wow. Jim here - I have always been worried that there will be another format war centered on the 3D home entertainment market as the industry comes to grips with the task of uniting everyone. Now comes word that Panasonic has been secretly working with James Cameron and in particular, a little project known as AVATAR. Their goal? To introduce Panasonic's open 3D technology to the public using a fully blown out, 3D HD release of AVATAR on Blu-ray by Easter of 2010!

DVDTown states that this info comes via "industry insiders". Apparently, clips of AVATAR have been shown to select audiences to show off their 3D Home Videos capability. (By the way, www.3DHomeVideos.com points to MarketSaw - heh). I actually got wind of this a couple weeks ago when a reader sent me a note saying that a clip of AVATAR had been shown at the Nuremberg Toy Fair. I have been trying like crazy to get a view of this material, but no go thus far.

And footage has been shown wtf!

Me.

3D film is fundamentally flawed, even if great eye candy, for the simple reason that your eyes cannot roam the frame. You're presented a voluminous object and consequently only one point of focus, rather than an infinite number on a 2D projection. I'm sorry, but the ability to analyze framing and composition is possibly the most important element of film, and 3D decimates that by actively punishing you for moving your eyes from the focal point.

So there have been descriptions of what is apparently the money shot of this film. Said shot is a first-person POV shot which lasts for 12 minutes.

If you want to find out what it features follow the link:

Hell fucking yes, hell MUTHA FUCKIN yes. Thats the most hype worthy article I've read about the movie yet.

I really hope we get to see a screenshot of some sort soon though. Very interested in seeing how the aliens look.

Fun Fact: All the time since these AVATAROMGZ threads kept coming up on neogaf, I thought of it as a US movie remake of the animated series "Avatar".

Does anyone actually know what this movie will be about, except that it will be filmed in 3d?

Let me tell you now that when there is a teaser a new thread will be made.

What if there's an announcement of when that teaser will be released?

:lol It will go in here. I've kept entirely to this thread for a while now. Only a teaser/trailer will force my hand unless the release date is pushed forward.

I think a teaser/trailer of James Cameron's first movie in over a decade deserves a new a thread.

Yeah and this thread may not be checked for an update because of too many burned Gaffers.

Oh Sculli :lol

Bless you, you haven't had it easy :)

what if there's a rumored piece of concept art of someone announcing that there's a release date for the day the teaser's release date announcement will be revealed written on someone's t-shirt from a first person perspective?

Dude.
That POV shot sounds so FUCKING CRAZY.
Holy shit. I can imagine it now.

I thought that sequence was really cool. It made the movie.

OP even though there is not a trailer yet I give you props for keeping us in the know with all the small details. Im so incredibly hyped for this film that any information is good information. Basically, this movie sounds like it will be my Ultimate movie that I've always dreamed of (great director, unmatched visuals, deep story with an emotional edge, and epic sci-fi shit to boot). Seriously, it's like my wish was answered. Keep it coming Sculli

it would be hilarious if sculli isnt the one who makes the thread on the teaser

I wouldn't be too surprised if this happens. I do sleep and leave my house :lol I'm sure if anybody on GAF saw it they would post the thread asap. Doesn't bother me. I'll attempt to make a decent official thread a few months from release though.
