I feel fine. Health nuts always talk about how great eating healthy makes them feel so great, but when I did it I felt the same as I do now. No, strike that. I generally felt worse because nothing I ate ever really made me feel full....so there was a constant hunger frequently biting at me.

Eating healthy doesn't make you feel great. If you want to feel "great" then try exercising daily and watching what you eat. Believe it or not when you get into an exercise routine it makes you naturally want to eat better-- as in more fruits and vegetables, more water instead of soda.

border said:
Maybe this "feeling good" isn't really a physical thing. Maybe the sensation of pleasure is generated by the sickeningly smug and condescending attitude that you get to take towards people who don't obsess over every component in every meal. That's certainly in full effect in this thread.

No you just think it is. There's no need to be apprehensive to people who take care of themselves. In today's world there's a huge variety of things available for us to eat, but that doesn't mean it's all fine. It's not just about being healthy, it's about being smart with what you choose to eat.

Don't remind me. Last time I flew, I was forced to sit next to some fat woman who smelled bad and couldn't keep her legs together. I had to stick my legs into the aisle in order to avoid contact with that woman. It was scarry.

I usually only eat meat, a couple of whole grain bread slices and take one-a-day viatmin supplements. Pretty much the cheapest diet I could think of.

Calling me a heath nut is kind of funny. I just got in from smoking my last cigarette (although I did then make a smoothie with fruit and frozen yogurt). I'm not a health nut, there is just some really awful, processed, sugar filled crap that a lot of people eat all the time, and I can't understand how you can keep eating it and not feel like crap all the time. I have no idea how they do it. The title of my thread was more to get a rise out of people.

And hey I'm not the one ragging on fat people. I know plenty of large people that eat relatively healthy.

I also think that people don't have an idea of what good food is. I'd much rather eat a big ass steak and steamed asparagus with mashed potatoes, or Indian food, or Thai food than 3 cans of soda and ham 'n processed American cheese on white bread.

:lol thats actually the brand i buy. I prefer Romaine lettuce, but the shit just runs out too quickly. A head of Iceberg lasts forever. More bang for my buck.

i agree with you on the rest of it though.

Where are the rolling eyes emoticons when you need them? Don't tell me you've never been in a situation in which you had to uncomfortably sit next to an obese person. Movie theaters? Have you ever been in one that was packed? And don't even get me started on being seated between two behemoths on a plane.

White Bread. Who the hell can stomach this sugar and plastic concoction known as "White Bread"? From what I understand it's very popular with the poor and uneducated. Congratulations, you are eating filler!
I like white! My sister is a bread nut and always buys a whole variety of whole/multigrain. I always have to add double of what I put inbetween white bread to retain the taste of the ingredients i put in. The whole/multi is ok, except for those awful ones that have a fruity flavor added to them. Yuck.
Here's a nice article for everyone who buys just any whole wheat bread and think it's better than w hite... http://www.motherearthnews.com/article/2148/toparticles
Few people realize that the “whole wheat” used in many commercially packaged products (with the exception of such companies as Bob’s Red Mill, King Arthur Flour and Arrowhead Mills) is processed exactly like white flour. The nutrient-rich, darker-colored bran, germ and endosperm are mechanically separated then recombined into “whole wheat” according to a formula that varies by brand but that rarely mimics Mother Nature’s balance.
How nutritious is this reconstituted “whole-wheat” flour? As with white flour, any whole-wheat nutrients not purposely discarded with the germ and bran often succumb to the long, hot, repetitive milling process, or to chemicals used to artificially “improve” or bleach flour. Significant losses may occur in heat-sensitive B vitamins, vitamin E, enzymes and other healthful components.
gohepcat said:
Canned Vegetables. Yummm they are tin-licious. Sure I could buy green beans from the produce isle, but why go through all that hassle when I can have this can that has been pasteurized and now contains absolutely no nutrients.

What are completely missing are any fresh fish, real vegetables, fresh fruit, and whole grain breads. The most common theme is Sugar...tons of it.
Fresh veggies aren't much better, unless you pick them yourself from your garden. Fresh vegetables lose about 50% of their nutrients by the time they get to the grocery store. Even more if you let them sit in your fridge.
Buy frozen whenever possible. Some may have salt added (washable) and/or treated in hot water, but even then they're still better than week old veggies in a truck being bruised and battered around.

Your right about lettuce, its nothing more that water and a little fiber. That’s why I use this in its place for salads, sandwiches, or anything else you would use lettuce for. With it you at least get some daily Vitamin A 60%, Calcium 6% Vitamin C 20% and Iron 15%. My favorite is to have it alone topped with some Catalina dressing.

On teh one hand, you have people telling you, "drink 8 cups of water a day!".

On the other, you have, "Don't eat Iceberg lettuce - it's only water!"

*sigh*

Anyway, I have but one thing to add:

American food sucks.

The bread tastes cake.
Beef tastes like corn.
And the fruit has no taste at all.

I tried a variety of apples, and only one came close to having flavour (a golden delicious).
On a return trip, I went and bought some apples to prove a point in their tastelesness - curiously, they tasted pretty good, and I had to admit defeat. Later, I read the little sticker on them, and they were actually from New Zealand. Suck it down!

Ok, so I'm generalising - your grapes are pretty good. And the chilli variety is to die for!

I have little to contribute to this topic except for sharing my newfound dedication to eat healthier. I've generally had a bad constitution most of my life. If I'm not the first to get sick, I'll be the second, and I get sick often.

That said, I noticed, sometime after my high school years, that I was blessed with a fast metabolism and a surprisingly lack of anything even remotely resembling the need for solid sleep.

So, for about 7 years, I did nothing but eat mostly crap food and sleep only 3 - 4 hours a night (week nights only.)

Then, just before I hit 26, I got sick. And for the next two months I could do little to really shake it. I'd feel better one week, then like hell the next. Finally, about 3 weeks ago, I went to the hospital with a 103.5 fever, and was diagnosed with pneumonia, yum!

Since then, I've decided to change my lifestyle! So now, I drink fresh squeezed OJ in the morning, water throughout the day (1 can of Pepsi with lunch), vitamins every morning after breakfast (never took 'em before), buy apples instead of candy with my lunch, and sleep at least 7 hours a night.

It's been only about a week and a half since I started this new routine, but I'm feeling tons better already. My next step, is to start some kind of light excercises each night. Push-ups, sit-ups, etc.

One thing else I don't get - in the States, the nutritional information is all expressed in "percentage of 2000 calorie diet". i much prefer our method which labels energy and nutrients per 100g of food, with a separate column for serving size. Give us actual measurements!

Ha, it doesn't bother me what people think of the foods I eat (and I tend to eat some total crap at times) because I know how to keep up with the amount and ratios of fat, carbs and protien as I eat during the day, and how to span them out throught the day.

I'm not into greasy or fried foods so long as I don't eat too much of the bad fat laden foods, or overeat in the wrong ratio I'm fine.

Um, first off you sound like you intentionally went to the states to dog the food industry, not that I care, but damn that's some anal stuff.

Secondly, the nutrional info shows how many servers per container, and the amount of nutrents/vitamins/minerals for each serving on almost EVERY food product, this I know since the FDA enforces it, soooooooo stop making up stuff. :lol

That's not the original concern. It's that many people eat ice berg lettuce with buttermilk ranch dressing, and think they're being healthy. When in reality, they're eating food loaded with saturated fats.

A real salad that's easy to get? Get Chick Fila's char grilled salad with light italian dressing, and take some of the cheese out. Delicious and healthy.

The thing is, I pretty much live alone and between work and school, I don't have time to cook decent meals. I phased out most fast food about half a year ago, before getting sick, but the food I do eat now isn't exactly home cooking, and I know I'm lacking in important intake. I don't pump myself full of supplements like some do, I just take 1 Centrum multivitamin a day. It's better than nothing.

If you like excess oil in your body, personally I'd rather have no oil added, the fat can be lost, but the oil isn't always properly disposed of.

Actually, pretty much! Just kidding around - it's fun to pick on the States. I'm just jealous. I simply love food. You guys have some kick-bottom bagels.

I love munching on stuff and reading the nutritional value. Example - drinking a can of "soda" and going, "woohoo!, i just drank 7 teaspoons of sugar!". I can't read imperial. I just can't do it.

A lot of nutritionists are now saying it's probably a good idea to take some simple multivitamin. It's just too hard for some people to get all the nutrients they need, so something is better than nothing at all.

I would just like to share the fact that tonight I went to the Hof Brau, had some big slabs of corned beef, doused in salt, pepper, horseradish, au jus and gravy. Along with that I had some mashed potatoes with said gravy and an iceberg lettuce salad smothered in Thousand Island.

AND I FEEL GREAT!

A happy stomach is part of being healthy kids. Now I may balance this out with some healthier foods tomorrow, but I just go with what my body tells me. Eating 'healthy' or crap thats termed the health food of the month and nothing but that is depressing. I was on a natural food vegetarian diet for awhile, because its what the family I was staying with ate. I constantly felt hungry and unfulfilled. It sucked.

And let me say, the more leaf like the lettuce, the nastier the salad. No texture is no fun.

Yea, forget all that fancy shmancy science. I wanna eat pixie sticks all day long because my body craves it!

All joking aside. I'm actually surprised by the reactions. Me and my friends will occasionally get McDonalds, but usually with the comment "ohh this is such shit. I'm gonna be sick", and it's not that I don't eat some of the stuff on my list (I had a coke today). It's just I see people fill carts up with this crap and not buy a single fresh piece of fish, or vegetable, or fruit.

As for the iceberg lettuce, that I'm just at a loss for. I can't even remember the last time I've even seen a salad with that in it. I'd rather eat something that looks more.... you know...like a salad. Jesus, even Macdonald's salads are all baby greens and stuff.

Just look at that green leafy goodness:

I think the original post by gohepcat was inflammatory, smug, self-serving and unhelpful. People end up eating shit for a variety of reasons. To glibly point it out is both nasty and unhelpful.

A Few nutritional tips for those who care:

Breads: Generally, the less bread you eat the better. It’s not the greatest form of carbohydrate by any means and offers little by way of digestion. Always go for the roughest brownest gnarliest stuff you can get. You need fibre. Fibre is rough stuff that drags through your intestines and cleans out all the old crap. Sounds gross but that’s what happens and that’s what you need – better out than in. High fibre eating is the key to generally feeling better, more alive.

A great tip for anyone who thinks they may not be getting enough fibre is to try eating only air-blown popcorn for 24 hours. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and breakfast, drinking only water. In the days following you’ll see a most stunning difference in the way you feel. :)

On ready-meals, just don’t do it. It’s easy to become conditioned to the flavourings and fat level. And the dreaded monosodium glutamate. Experiment with healthier foods and healthier, equally strong flavourings. Lemon juice, wine and Balsamic vinegars, olive oils/other decent oils, herbs… As a herb starter, buy some living, potted Basil (large), flat parsley and coriander. Keep them watered on your window and chuck it in with your food!

On the subject of luitice, this is a really easy, quick fix. Substitute it for watercress, rocket or spinach. There are all full of great stuff, especially iron and are fibrous.

In all seriousness, I have worked out diet plans for friends in the past and I’d be happy to do the same if anyone needs any easy to follow practical help with what to eat. Just PM me if ya do!
:)

Well, just as a possible example, I often get my vegetables from a different place than my local supermarket. It's possible that the meat isn't good at any particular market, and people just get it from a butcher. Same goes with fish. In fact, for the most part, the fresh fruit and veges at supermarkets (atleast around here) is the lowest of the low you can get. Alright for canned, dried, and snacks, but worthless for anything else.

Where are you?

The supermarkets here (southern CA) are great for fresh (awesomely 50% less nutrients than FROZEN!) veggies and (mmm sweet goodness) fruits. The health/organic food stores here are pretty shitty with their bruised produce, but offer really good prices... but i think that has more to do with the fact that their employees aren't union and have gone on strike several times.

New Zealand. Its not about health/organic stuff. Can't stand overpriced organic bollocks. Supermarkets are evil corporations. I come from a family which owned a grocery store (actually the produce isn't that much different, but the love is greater!), and got used to fresh produce. Well, that's a bit of a fib - I live on my own at the moment, and I have veggies in my fridge for weeks - cauliflower lasts forever! Personally though, I prefer veggies closer to farm fresh (easier to do when I worked int he grocery store!).

I hope you're not just using how people "look" as an indication of one's health. Unless you have microvision and can see people's organs, bloodstream, bone density, etc. And it's really not just "your" problem. No one exists in a vacuum.

At any rate, count me in with those singing the praises of eating well. It'll be a year in a couple of weeks(Jan. 6th) since I first decided to change my eating habits, and between that and regular exercises, i'm 80+ pounds lighter, more fit, have better cardiovascular performance, and just feel better. My sleep cycle is more regulated also.

That said, i'm not some health nazi, but i've always been well informed thanks to my dad. He wasn't health nazi either but was always health conscious...we've always had wheat bread...wheat was just the "default". I didn't even taste white breat until sometime in school, and yeah, while it was easier on the tastebuds at the time, it really was just a pastey mess. I was also raised to eat hot cereal(Cream of wheat) for breakfast every weekday morning, which i definitely HATED, but i'm glad my dad didn't send me out with either no breakfast, or sugar-packed cold cereal.

I loved to eat though, and damn sure didn't mind indulging my sweet tooth, but even as a "don't-give-a-damn" teen, i still tried to be healthy, and when I wasn't, I at least knew that i wasn't....it's bad when people eat like crap and don't even know it(recall that guy that tried to sue McDonald's because he had a bad heart or something and thought eating McDonald's daily was "healthy"). I also tried to get my friends to try to do little things here and there...for instance when we used to go to the arcade. Burger King was right next to it and my friends would always super-size(or whatever BK's equivalent for it was), whereas i would cut out the cheese, and i wouldn't get any french fries. I also tried to get use to walk more....we had to take 2 buses to get there, and on the way back sometimes i'd make us walk the first bus' route(about 20-30mins).

Anyway, i'll wrap this up...sure it's your choice to eat whichever way you choose to eat...but so what? One shouldn't rule their days under the motto "I do *insert voluntary action* simply because I can". If someone is struck and killed by an out of control car because some Joe BigMac has a heart attack due to extremely bad eating habits, the victim sure doesn't have a lot of choice in that matter. "Food Elitist" "Health Nazi"...whatever you want to call it, but there's nothing respectable about people who engage in habits long-term self-indulgence which lead to a whole host of preventablehealth problems.
