You tell your kid to stop playing so much games, he says "but dad you play games too", what do you do?

No idea but I will take notes.

my parents had an Atari (yes I’m that old) and they let me play all day long. They didn’t play games at all.

but they also let me watch movies all day long and even drink coffee at very young age.

the only thing they care about was:
Go to school
Do homework
Pass all school tests

and I was scary as hell to fail in any of those 3 points because at that time, dude they hit harddddd
I think that's an awful situation to be placed in.

Those being the primary focus to me seems like a recipe for creating an obedient drone. :(

IDK I'd say it places primary focus on school and shows that as long as you excel in the realm of education/work then you can do other things.

I have somewhat the same approach with my kids. As long as they do well in school and show motivation in keeping their room clean, etc... then I am lenient with their free time.

Assuming you don't instill fear (of you) into them, then sure.

I was mostly responding to Frans statement about his parents hitting him.

I believe make kids afraid of their "leaders" is a good way to implant a sense of always having a boot on their necks, unless they themselves are the leader.

Obviously it can seem like a tough balance on how to properly teach others without skewing their perception of others into a negative light.

Oh yeah we stopped spanking as soon as they stopped responding to it (about age 3-4), and only spanked when they got REALLY out of line (hurting the cat or breaking something on purpose, etc).

Now time out is the go-to. Works like a charm.

How young were you spanking them? Age 3 and under seems pretty fucking stupid. I mean so does hitting kids in general but yeah.

It's about stopping when it is time to and letting other priorities come first. The volume of games is secondary to your responsibilities.

Everything is about balance. Set limits for the child and follow your own limits. Follow your own limits (while the child is awake) and quit when your time is done. Set an alarm and make a comment in front of your kid, “It looks like my time is up.” Teach by example. Teach limits by following them yourself.

Why not tell your kid how it is: you are an adult, you go to work to afford a household and a family, and you get to decide how to spend your free time. You wouldn't be dumbfounded when your kid objected to going to school "because dad doesn't go" either, right?

Do you have kids? How many?

Until you've had a kid that is literally on a rampage fucking shit up and throwing a tantrum and doesn't pay attention until you pop them on the butt you don't get it, and it's disingenuous to come off the way you do.

Smacking your kid on the butt isn't fucking "hitting" them. We didn't clock our fucking kids in the mouth when they talked back.

And I meant 3-4 is about the only time it works, as you can't reason with them, and they can't be soothed by normal means sometimes (or they have done something so dangerous / bad they have to remember it).

Then throw a shoe at him to establish dominance.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.

This was my childhood as well. Once in seventh grade I got a D on my chemistry progress report (not even semester grade) because we had only had one test (which I got a D on).

Suddenly it went from "you can play video games as long as you want" to "you're being relocated to your dad's house in the country that has no TV, no phone, no computer, no internet, and no game systems". Spent the entire rest of that school year in a continuous cycle of wake up -> go to school -> come home -> study -> go to bed.

I work shifts, so I only play games or watch movies when the kids are not around. Be the role model. They can play the Switch for an hour or two on weekends but my 7 year old gets really cranky when he has to stop and do something else, so at the moment no video games for him.

... respectfully... You stand up, yank out your console, sell it on ebay or whatever in front of him, delete steam, whatever, and tell him "i don't anymore. Fluh!"

Is he struggling in other areas of life and school? If not why bother. As a parent you got to pick your battles wisely.

I no longer play games "so much".
I'd feel guilty, if I played more hours, than my kids, whom I'd forbid doing so.

"I learned it by watching you!"

I honestly thought of the exact same PSA when I saw this thread. Great minds.

The honest answer that I'd use: "I already had to limit my game time when I was a child and going to school. In fact, when I was going to college, I barely played any video games. That was a choice I made for myself, because I wanted good grades. It's also the reality of homework. But I'm older now. I took my education seriously, and now I have more time after work. You'll be in the same situation someday."
