This is an easy one for me:

Desslok of Gamilon.

All in all, amongst so many fantastic villains, it was probably Jesse Blue from Saber Rider and the Star Sherrifs. Bad ass relatable villain.

Mist scary was definitely the Boogey Man from The real Ghostbusters. He was just pure wickedness.

These two idiots:

These two were a lot more trigger happy and violent in the first season of TMNT. They were still perceived as idiots, but chaotic idiots.

Both characters even toted around semi-realistic looking automatic weapons that fired live ammunition and even made "rat-a-tat-tat!" machine gun sounds.

But of course after the first season aired, '80s era parental groups had a lot to say about these two and the writers had to change them to be less violent and even more incompetent and dumbed down. They essentially became bumbling comedic relief in all of the later seasons.

Rocksteady lost his military fatigue for season 2 and both characters switched their weapons to much less realistic "pew pew pew" styled laser canons.

I always find these changes to be interesting.

I have a bit of a problem here, in that my favourite 80's cartoons often didn't have well-defined villains, and the best-established villain in such cartoons - Baron Von Greenback - isn't *that* exciting a villain compared to quite a lot of the supporting cast.

But I think there's another 'von' in the family that I think's a good balance between being a well-established recurring villain and actually having a fun identity beyond that:

Doctor Von Goosewing, from Count Duckula.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
Man all your 80's villains are fucking lame in comparison to the Mysterious Stranger from The Adventures of Mark Twain. He would destroy your very sense of well being and leave you adrift, alone in a universe that doesn't love you.

Skeletor for me

Special mention to 'the thing upstairs' from Trap Door though. We never saw him/it but I always loved that

I would've mentioned him, but sadly I didn't see that film until a few years ago. Incredibly well done sequence, extremely creepy and just the right level of disturbing.

'im Upstairs wasn't really a villain, though, was he? I was trying to think of something that fit for Trapdoor, but most of the antagonistic characters were oneshots.

Kind of a late addition to my answers but I just remembered also, Dr. Claw and his cat from inspector gadget and Gargamel from the smurfs.

Especially Gargamel being that his enemies were little blue people that only he could see after eating the mushrooms they lived in, don't tell me that isn't subtext heavy.

Not in the traditional sense I guess, but as Berks demanding overlord I always thought of him as the villain

God, I used to love Trapdoor : )

Many stations would broadcast the movie while expunging the Mysterious Stranger sequence because of how disturbing it was for a lot of little kids and I don't blame them. Its basically Satan acting all holier than thou before getting real dark.

Galvatron in the cartoon was cool because of his entrance in the movie, and because he was nuts in the third season.

But in the comic, when they flashed forward in some issue and he had beaten Rodimus and crucified him on the World Trade Center... bad ass.

Venger from Dungeons and Dragons. This motherfucker had 1 horn, flew on a black horse and his bff was literally named Shadow Demon.

The other would be Murky and Lurky from Rainbow Brite.

I fucking love Rainbow Brite! The movie villain was bad-ass too. She was such a bitch.

This little evil motherfucker right here!

I thought it was neat that Hordak from She-Ra was Skeletor's master - it was strange but interesting for me at the time that the villain from the girl cartoon spin-off was supposed to be the bigger threat, and it made the combined setting seem more interesting as a result.

If 1980 counts and so does Japanese stuff, then my vote goes to Harulu from Ideon:

Whenever she intervenes it tends to be a "holy shit!" moment, especially that one scene with her sister in the movie.

Strap on your hooker ...
Shredder, Dr. Claw, and Megatron are easily my top picks. They never had much success, but dammit, they had presence.

Crystal Bowie is rad, though.

Doc Terror from Centurions was pretty enjoyable. And Centurions had the best toys.

From the COPS gallery, I'd have to go with Dr. Badvibes.
