Shokoti from a He-man two parter. Terrifying to a child.

Shredder had that cool factor that nobody else got.

I was terrified of that fucking Boogey Man from The Real Ghostbuster and that pumpkin dude.

I was going to come in and ask why this wasn't a Skeletor thread, but...

I didn't even realize DBZ started in 1989. I don't know how long it took for them to get to Vegeta (Seeing how he's a 90's villain from a US perspective), but if it was before 1/1/90, then Skeletor'll have to settle for second.

Carmen counts right?

Unlike DBZ, Carmen Sandiego started in the mid-90s, so she definitely doesn't count. She'd be a hard 3rd if she wasn't, though!

Starscream by far (though anyone character voiced by Chris Latta is acceptable). He's so hilariously inept at scheming that you can't help but love him. He also has two of the best scenes in any 80's animated tv/movie in Transformers: The Movie.

1)
Kicking Megatron when he's down.
2)
His subsequent coronation donning a crown and cape, then Galvatron makes his entrance and immediately disintegrates him.

Soooooo good.

The villains in the Saint Seiya movies were all pretty badass.
My uncle had imported the VHS tapes back then, but they were all spanish. :O
Still had fun watching them though.

Lots of good options available from He-Man,TMNT, Transformers, or G.I. Joe, but i'm going to go with a villian that terrified me in my younger years. Non other than The Real Ghostbusters' Boogieman. Guy was so evil and scary as fuck, they brought him back for an episode the next season., which I don't think happened again on the show.

that guy was creepy. egon had a right to be scared

Switch Back 9

a lot of my threads involve me fucking up somehow. Perhaps I'm a moron?

Hahaha fuck yes. I love Starscream, he's like the Master Shake of Transformers, a moronic dickhead always up to something that gets smacked down in the end every time.

These two were a lot more trigger happy and violent in the first season of TMNT. They were still perceived as idiots, but chaotic idiots.

Both characters even toted around semi-realistic looking automatic weapons that fired live ammunition and even made "rat-a-tat-tat!" machine gun sounds.

But of course after the first season aired, '80s era parental groups had a lot to say about these two and the writers had to change them to be less violent and even more incompetent and dumbed down. They essentially became bumbling comedic relief in all of the later seasons.

Rocksteady lost his military fatigue for season 2 and both characters switched their weapons to much less realistic "pew pew pew" styled laser canons.

I always find these changes to be interesting.

Awesome post.

Bebop and Rocksteady, cause they were the only sexy villains in the 80's. The 90's were a much better time for people like me in the Villain crush department.

just curious if they ever made it back home

Nope.

The last episode was never made. In it, it is revealed that Venger is DM's son (which is heavily hinted at in the dragon's graveyard ep) and the kids transmogrify him into a good guy.

it's a fantastic ep - the script is available here if you want to read it. it ends with DM giving them a choice of going home or staying and trying to free a new realm.

I'm watching the show for the first time because of this post and it's hilarious. The puns and snide comments are first class.

It's definitely underrated as a show. I mean, it's a ridiculous show for kids, so it's not exactly high-concept, but it's fun.

I think Mon-Starr has the better transformation speech between the two though.

That's true. Mumm-ra had extra transformations that were pretty cool though, including the ancient spirits leaving their pedestals to give him extra powers.

It always cracked me up how the ancient spirits were blatantly voiced by Pantho's VA. Like no real effort to change his voice a bit lol

Their songs were better AND DONT YOU EVER FORGET IT!

The Misfits from Jem and the Holograms. They may not have the scope of Skelator or a Cobra Commander, but honestly that's part of their appeal. The were more than willing to commit acts of vandalism, assault, arson and worse just to get rid of rival band (even through they were both represented by the same label) they didn't particularly care for.

Honrable mention goes to The Space Princess from the Rainbow Brite movie for being willing to steal the heart of the universe and doom all existence to eternal darkness just so she could own something shiny. And for being killed by a 9 year or in a hoop skirt, lol.

lmao yes, the Misftis are insane and constantly destroy shit out of pettiness. Actually it's mostly Pizzazz, but the others follow her lead. I would say the most unrealistic part of the show is how they never have to respond for the huge amount of property damage and physical violence they perpretate, haha.

Hordak doesn't get enoughniverse love.
latest

I love Hordak, but Filmation did him absolutely no justice by making him weak as shit. When the evil horde was introduced in the masters of the universe line of toys, they were supposed to be powerful and a new level of villain. Filmation decided to put them in the She-Ra cartoon and made them weak and stupid.

Samhain though...

This guy was the other scary Ghostbters baddie. His voice made him 10x more creepy. That cartoon in general was awesomely creepy.

Another creepy Ghostbusters creature was that strange door that would only say "Do not open until doomsday" is that evil as fuck voice. They really nailed the voices in that show

DBZ anime was in the 90s wasn't it? Unless Saiyan Saga was aired during 89.

According to Wikipedia, DBZ's anime started airing in Japan in 1989. Unfortunately, I don't know if they got to Vegeta in time for him to be an 80s villain, but the arc did start in '89.
