I haven't bought more than ten or twelve albums this year, some of which certainly weren't worthy of any 'best of' listing, but my top five thus far would probably be something like...

1. Patrick Wolf - Lycanthropy
2. John Vanderslice - Cellar Door
3. Bjork - Medulla
4. Franz Ferdinand - S/T
5. Loretta Lynn - Van Lear Rose

RJD2, Secret Machines, and (surprisingly) Snow Patrol are pretty close to making the cut, but we'll see. I'm psyched to hear the new Ted Leo, Tea Party, Isis, and I think Mastadon has a new one, too. After Avalanche I'll approach Matt Good's new disc with caution; oddly enough, I haven't even felt the slightest compulsion to pick up Wilco this time around...

Is that Taking Back Sunday album really good?

If you've heard the first album, and really liked it, you may not like the new one. It's quite different. More melodic, and the song structures are simpler. Many fans think it's watered down. Gone are the contrasting vocals, due to the loss of guitarist/singer John Nolan. It's just smoother all around, but I'm starting to warm up to it finally. I'm really liking some of the songs on there.

The new Tea Party is really fucking good. I don't think you'll be disappointed. It's more in line with their heavier material overall, rather than the blues/jazz-style they go for from time to time. I paid a lame import price, but I don't regret it.

Isis's Panopticon is amazing. That's all there is to say lol.

Thanks for the info on the Tea Party CD. I was looking at it in the shop a few days ago but couldn't justify the $19 price without hearing some good word-of-mouth first.

Any idea what the date on Shake the Sheets is?

The fact that I'm the only one to list McLusky is a freaking travesty.
I haven't heard it. I liked My Pain and Sadness is More Sad and Painful Than Yours better than Do Dallas, though...

I like the female vocals. They add something more.

So far, a tie between the new PJ Harvey and Iron & Wine cds. Nick Cave and Beck both have new offerings that I expect I will like more, though.

Dillinger Escape Plan - Miss Machine.

I ordered the new Mastodon CD(Leviathan) today which has been getting some great buzz, so we'll see how that is when I get in a week or so.

And I still gotta get Pain of Salvation - 12:5, which is also supposed to be superb...

but alas Miss Machine is the only CD i've bought this year that has actually came out this year, so it is winning by default.

I'm not so sure we'll see the new Beck record this year. The official word is still "late November," but I've got a feeling we might see it pushed back for one reason or another. At the same time, Beck's been going for late year releases for the past couple albums (at least everything from Mutations on up has been a late year release). I guess we'll see.

And I love Nick Cave, but just do the math, man: Nick Cave + double album - Blixa = possible uh oh.

I'm really hoping Trail of Dead leaks this year. This delay is going to be my reason for hating major labels for the next year. Unless the album ends up being mediocre. Then I'll pretend I was never anticipating it anyway.

EDIT: Wilco. . .I was pretty unhyped for Wilco this time around. I knew there was no possible way they could top their previous 2 records. The first time I heard At Least That's What You Said, I thought 'Wow, maybe I'm wrong.' But yeah, I was definitely right. I still place that song firmly atop Wilco's arsenal and still think Tweedy is one of the best songwriters going. The album's good and all, but it's like a holding pattern. If they release another record that sounds like this, Wilco will be slagged on majorly. They do not know the meaning of backlash.

there's yet to be an "album of the year" candidate for me so far. nothing has really blown me away like last year, which is disappointing. i guess the new wilco is good, but it's not yankee hotel foxtrot nor summerteeth -- just a good wilco record.

Dead

well not really...yet

The new Isis leaked completely? Ive only heard one song so far, gah must hear the rest

I think Wilco is really overrated. That doesn't make them bad at all, I just don't find any of their work absolutely amazing like so many seem to. A Ghost Is Born did not do it for me at all.

As for Isis, yeah the whole thing is leaked... otherwise I think it's set for October which feels like three years away lol.

IMO it's just as good as anything else they've done. It's a fantastic record and proves that Wilco is really good at not repeating themselves. I love the way this album is produced, how it sounds, and a lot of the lyrics are pretty decent. C'mon, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and Summerteeth didn't have songs as cool as "Spiders" and "I'm a Wheel." 'Nuff said :)

But I don't really know what I've loved this year.
pretty much how I feel. This has been a terribly weak year for music to me or it might be that im losing interest seeing as how I havent purchased many cds in months (maybe 5 in lieu of the average 15-20) sigh

that vetiver record is so hot, i don't know. joanna newsom's LP is pretty incredible too. between those and the elected i've been pretty happy with the folk revival this year.

Better with every listen...

Shake the Sheets is 10/26, and outstanding.

Audit in Progress by Hot Snakes is 10/05, and that's probably going to absoutely tear my face off, I'm anticipating it so badly... but other that that, I've heard almost everything else I wanted to for the rest of the year (Nino Rojo by Devendra Banhart by far being the best thing not by Hot Snakes that's slated for the rest of 2004 for me).

Should be a new Ween record next year, and the new Optiganally Yours (*crossing my fingers*). 2004 has been pretty good, but could be better I suppose.

My enjoyment of the album has peaked. It shares the same flaw with Grandaddy's Sumday -- every song is midtempo. I understand there's some thematic stuff going on that requires certain pieces of the record to sound similar, but there's frankly no excuse for having the same, shambling tempo for every song on the record.

When it's gold, though, it's really gold. It was a good surprise and it kept me happy for a couple weeks. I imagine I'll toss it in once in a while to check out those A-list songs.

I'd have to think about it some more, but the only album that comes to mind immediately is Morrissey's You Are The Quarry.

The Empire Strikes First is definitely in my top few albums this year. Sounds like their last album at first, but it grows on you. I think it's better written and more important, which adds to the appeal.

Aaaw yeah! Just found out this is finally coming out in the states in November.

I'm undecided, but there are definitley contenders:

The Organ s/t

Futureheads s/t

The Faint- Wet From Birth

Le Tigre- This Island--drops in October and is the best they've done since the debut. Very surprising.

Ill Ease- The Exorcist--can't recommend this one enough. Off kilter Fall-inspired one-woman band that's sick, clever, wrong and sarcastic. Almost like the Blues Explosion shoved through a Solex sieve.

Cardigans- Long Gone Before Daylight. Seriously. A wonderful album that's quite soulful and dark. Great production and has a whiff of 70s American singer-songwriter rock. Seriously, don't ignore this album simply because of "Lovefool."

French Kicks- Trial of the Century

Liking the new McLusky ok, but it's not as good as either of the first two, in my opinion.

If this was a singles list, It'd be much easier (Loretta Lynn, Pixies, Go Home Productions, Pas/Cal, 50 Foot Wave, Secret Machines, etc. etc. etc.)

Looks like you were correct. The official site just updated with the news that Beck's new album won't be out until early 2005.

Just for the record, the new Taking Back Sunday album is a really really well done album.

The new Straylight Run album has leaked for those who want John Nolan's musical style. (Which seems to be alot lighter and piano-oriented.)
