should i still check it out if i wasn't a huge fan of their previous stuff? they're touring with Atreyu in November, so i'm gonna end up seeing 'em live...

It's darker and more "mature" then their previous stuff but I liked some of their fun tracks from their debut. This new one for the most part is a pretty lame attempt at being serious. Check out "New American Classic" and "A Decade Under The Influence" (if you havent heard it already) and the opening track..whatever that is.

Holy fuck. I heard the first song from Audit in Progress by Hot Snakes. And ohmyholyfuckinggod it is devastating. Album of the Year, no fucking contest, gahhh, I want to hear the rest. October 5th, get it, boys. And if you still haven't hear Suicide Invoice, do it. Go listen to SI, then fall in love, get Automatic Midnight and both Drive Like Jehu albums. And thank me later.

AOTY :D

White Man: Oh come on! Wilco's new album is great. So what if the first two songs are kinda bleh... I really enjoy the step BACKWARDS they took because it sounds so unpolished and... natural, I guess. Great shit.

Has anyone heard the new Devendra Banhart record? It comes out in two weeks and I want to know what my hype level should be set at.

White Man: I've heard it, quite a few times. It's along the same lines as Rejoicing in the Hands, being from the same sessions and all. I don't know if I like it better than Rejoicing but I definitely like it as much, and that's saying a lot. There's nothing quite on the level of "This Beard is For Siobhan" but the songs "Little Yellow Spider" and "At the Hop" (Which I believe features Andy Cabic from Vetiver helping out with vocal duties, it sounds like him, anyway) are fuckin' awesome. It's a very, very solid album. And it'll be a fucking bummer if it's his last.

Which are you more excited for: DB vs. XX or the XX/pAperchAse split?

What's Devendra Banhart like? I keep seeing that name recommended to me on Amazon a whole lot. And recently, I keep seeing his name a whole lot everywhere.

It's very weird, almost psychedelic folk music. It's very stripped down and simplistic, but it can be very whimsy at times, and also very dark. I don't know. His voice and songwriting skills are second to none, though. He's REALLY good.

Hoooooooold on, when was this pAper chAse/Xiu Xiu split announced? Is there a date on that? And at this point, I don't think the XX/Banhart split is going to be happening. It was supposed to be out before Fabulous Muscles.

The first two songs are probably my favorite two on the record. Everything else comes across as a shade boring when compared to the last two albums. It feels like an extension of the more indulgent aspects of YHF. Tweedy's wordplay is gold on the album, though. YHF sonded awkward lyrically in spots, but this is all smoothed out. It's not a bad record, and it's definitely grown on me, but if they put out another record that sounds similar to this, Wilco will at least find their way notching down my favorite bands list.

In addition to what Lambton said, Devendra's music doesn't sound forced or contrived at all. It sounds very 'real' and genuine. Extremely evocative stuff.

DB vs. XX will be out in December on KRS.
pAper chAse/Xiu Xiu is early next year. They're both going to cover songs of a "famous" band, they haven't decided who, yet, though. So that one's still kind of in the planning stages.

We've had to wait like a year for this DB v. XX release. It had better be more than 2 songs. And if it is 2 songs, I really hope Devandra doesn't do Support our Troops, unless he could do something amazing with it. I can't think of what XX song fits him most. I can't figure out which Banhart song fits XX most.

In addition to The Killers that I listed earlier, as I've been listening to this album, it just keeps blowing me away:

Damn. Seriously.

Also, I had forgotton about The Get Up Kids. Another contender for album of the year:

Click on "Luisterpaal." It's at the top of the page. You can listen to the whole thing. I didn't even know it was released until today... I'm gonna pick it up tomorrow.

edit: Props for the Joanna Newsom album, hXc_thugg. It's quite good.
