I'm still trying to form an opinion of banning animated avatars was a good idea or not. Seeing all these reminds me it was a bad idea.

You fail to grasp the real issue. It's not just about using animated avatars, but the freedom to do other things during the animated avatar era. Calling something gay, using a tired meme as a reply, saying out loud that Sony sucks. All of this forbidden now, like animated avatars.
