Your "Perfect" Batman

Not open for further replies.
But yeah we should be on DIckbat

Dick isn't Batman, sorry.
Maybe Bruce can take a legitimate break in 20+ years when he hits 100.

However when we legitimately get to a point in the future where Beyond Batman seems more realistic than standard Batman that will be the point Bruce definitely gets retired as mainline Batman.

Dick is a great character and probably a better hero and overall human being than Bruce (and he'd make for a great Justice League leader someday) but while Dickbats was fun it should never be the status quo. Batman is popular because he's a maladjusted asshole. Dick is too good, he would actually make Gotham a better place and what then?

IT burns my grits that Cyborg is in the JLA before DIck.

Dick was in the JLA during the Obsidian age, but that doesn't really count

I like the Arkham games Batman. Arkham Origins Batman had that extra bit of aggression/loose cannon that I really liked.
He was the second biggest bat-dick I've seen. The first one being the Killing Joke (movie) one. Man I hated that guy. Origins' Bat was cool though. he loved Alfred and it showed.

Just thinking of Cyborg makes me sad. And he's going to be taking up a spot in the Justice League movie... I actually like him quite a bit in the right context but DC has no idea what to do with him currently.
And it looks like we'll never get a Justice League line-up without most of the big 7 ever again aside from the spin-off books like the upcoming JLA. Too bad, I like when the line-ups get weird.

Animated series version, no question. Now if we're talking best not-batman batman, then my answer would be John Reese from Person of Interest:

He was tottaly batman

But I bring you London Batman as contender

Cyborg's black-black. Martian Manhunter, despite being the more interesting League-r, is only Piccolo-black. The only way I can explain it.

It's a shame because he's a great foil for the other characters.

He is so fascianting, THey did a lot with him in his solo.

Did you know that Martian Manhunter is more well known in South American than Superman. Mainly because he spends a lot of time there and he has a father/daughter relationship with Fire

Lol his body just got refreshed to 20

Yeah he did. Origins was so good story wise. I think a lot of people passed on it, because they were burned out on the series. They missed a good story.

I wouldn't want it to be the permenant status quo. I just wished they'd run with Batman & Robin for years. Loved the swap in dynamics. The whole thing was like Adam West-style Batman on a bad acid trip.

you mean DC's south america, right ?

Because dude is not even CLOSE to Chaves/Saint Seiya levels of "south america love more than the rest of the world"

I've been told once by a fan that Dick Grayson would never work as Batman. Throughout the years, he had been working to break away from Bruce's shadow, and him taking the mantle would be the exact opposite of his character and everything he stood for as Nightwing.

Personally, I feel Dick as Batman was one of the better moves DC had made, pre-N52. Yes, it puts him in strange territory, but he ultimately helped make the Batman persona feel fresh. It was a feeling we wouldn't have again until Scott Snyder's take on Bruce himself. Bruce would need to pass down the cowl eventually, and I say that Dick has every right to be on the top of that list.

Scott Snyder/Capullo's Batman was my perfect Batman. Good detective work, a driven Bruce Wayne, Batman looking armored but badass instead of in tights. It also captured Batman and Gotham's relationship better than maybe any other.

BTAS was obviously perfect as well. TDKReturns was a fun one off but that isn't the Batman I want all the time.

I'll take a shot at the reasonably lengthed version :p

What is the nature of the setting? (Universe with other superheroes, just Batman, realistic, campy, etc.)
Somewhere in between realistic and gothic. I'd say the Arkham games have this balance done dead on. The Joker needs to be done in the Hamill style in that one day he can be campy with ridiculous plots or the mass murdering psychopath.

What are Bruce's skills, his proficiency in each, and their focus in the stories?
The Worlds Greatest Detective. Perfect hand to hand combatant and technical/scientific/Criminology genius. With all this though he'll still try talk down his big bads down when he can.

How clear is the division between Bruce Wayne and Batman in Bruce's psyche?
He is Batman. Bruce Wayne is just an act.

What rules does Batman follow in his crusade and what his emotional response to it?
No killing and no guns. Guns are a weapon of cowards and he lives solely for the mission.

What is Bruce's relationship to his villains like?
Stern. He does try seek seek out the humanity and legitimately help those of villains who deserve it like Two-face, Mr Freeze and Clayface. Maybe because he believes that like them there is some way back from what he's become.

What is Bruce's relationship to other superheroes like?
Distant. Probably just the JLU interpretation.

Is Bruce a father?
Loving asshole.

Who is part of the Batfamily, if it exists?
Alfred, Nightwing, Robin, Batgirl and Terry McGinnis (eventually)

What is Bruce's character arc/development throughout the story?
Little to none apart from going from an amateur vigilante into the a force of nature in Gotham.

Does Bruce have a significant other?
On and off stuff before realising it gets in the way and is dangerous. He then cuts himself off from that stuff.

How does Bruce die? (Or how does the story end?)
Surrounded by the remaining Batfamily knowing that Gotham is in good hands. To the rest of the world he died a lonely billionaire.

Is Batman ultimately a hero or positive figure? Does he generally succeed in his mission?
To the GCPD he is invaluable. He is a force of nature in Gotham and a hero. At the end of the day though he is just a broken man who is trying to make sense of the world with his intellect and fists. He succeeds in his mission eventually by passing on the mantle to a successor who ultimately can be Batman and the protector Gotham needs without withdrawing from humanity.

Yeah he did. Origins was so good story wise. I think a lot of people passed on it, because they were burned out on the series. They missed a good story.

For real. Arkham Origins is one of my favorite Batman / Joker stories in any medium. Second best Arkham game after Asylum imo and easily the best storywise

I gotta be a productive human today so I'll respond individually to stuff later, but thank you to everyone who answered, especially those who did the long version. You have my undying love. <3

Well, this might be the most insane OP I've seen on GAF and that's a compliment!
Hahaha thanks! I'm really glad you got some enjoyment of it. <3

Who is Cass?
You can just skip the questions you don't know, Slayven. :p

And I thought I was a Batman fan. Pau, you're hardcore. How do you not have a tag to be the biggest Batman fan here? lol
Part of this was to see who the other umm... particularly invested Batman fans are on GAF. But I don't think I deserve the title since I've read almost none of the comics since 2011. And I'm not interested in most of the new animated movie output. I might be too picky of a Batman fan. But this comic is pretty much how I feel every time someone mentions Batman:

I was working on my version of the list and Word closed... without saving. I'm going to have to come back to this.
Oh noooo. I'm so sorry. :( I understand if you don't continue! D:

Dick as Batman is a great idea that works only temporarily. When it comes to "who can be Batman successfully if Bruce is gone" then Dick is the only answer, but yeah, his character makes it so that he could never be Batman for long.

Part of what makes Dick as great character is based on the presence of Bruce in his life, so I feel like Batman is always sort of a separate entity in Dick's mind and so he could never truly take the mantle permanently. He's qualified for the job, but he can never really identify as Batman. That's just my take of Dickbats.

Appearance, Personality, etc.

Pre-Crisis Batman had the best personality. He was feared by criminals, but he was also loved by other Superheroes, he highly cares for his Justice League friends. He wasn't a jerk to people, although maybe a low key jerk at times but never outright flaunting his superiority. Just read the Brave and the Bold series. He was a very likable individual who knows his limits, but constantly outwits stronger enemies without doing some stupid prep or batgod shit.

Skills

Best detective on Earth with a good handful of fighting skills. Just the pre-crisis days. He was just a detective who could also kick ass when need be. Not this 127 martial art technique bullshit, if he was really that good, the writers should let him live up to it, and not get his ass handed to him by Victor Zsacz in hand to hand combat.

Top 10 Villains

1. Joker
2. Ra's Al Ghul
3. Scarecrow
4. Catwoman
5. Bane
6. Two-Face
7. Nocturna
8. Mr. Freeze
9. Court of Owls
10. Cornelius Stirk

Appearance, Personality, etc.
  1. Describe what you think Bruce should look like. Or post a picture. Live action, favorite
artist rendition, anything goes. (Doesn't have to be an actor that has already portrayed him.)

Greg Capullo is my favorite Batman artist, although my perfect Batman is one constantly in the shadows. So a mixture of David Mazzuchelli and Greg Capullo/Andy Kubert. Also, I much prefer a simpler outfit to overly designed.

  2. What is his body type?

Not body builder thick, but very muscular and well put together.

  3. What is the primary driving force for Bruce's crusade?

Combination of the desire to make his parents proud and guilt - not just because he saw his parents gunned down as a child, but even more than that because he doesn't kill he knows many people are hurt or killed that otherwise might not have so there's an obsession.

  4. What's Bruce's personality like in general?

Distracted not distant, occasionally snarky, periodically very compassionate, mostly stoic. Bruce's obsession and drive often leads him to seem very cold and uncaring, but he has made deep connections that I think are important to his character as a whole because they make him a more well rounded character.

  5. How clear is the division between Bruce Wayne and Batman in Bruce's psyche? (If you want to talk about who the real persona is, this is your chance.)

Bruce Wayne is the persona and Batman is who he really is, but he struggles with it because of his love for Alfred, Dick, Tim, Damian, etc. He doesn't go so far as to want to abandon Bruce Wayne or that aspect of his life, but being Batman and subsequently being with the Batman is where he feels most normal.

  6. How social or anti-social is Bruce?

He's a moody and aloof socialite that can be very charming but isn't so overly likeable and seemingly perfect that every lady wants him and every man wants to be him. Basically, he isn't as extremely charismatic as Tony Stark but is also doesn't have as many public outbursts and moments of douchebaggery as Tony Stark has either.

  7. How talkative is he? What's his speech like?

Very smart, well spoken but he prefers to listen more than talk, even in his Bruce Wayne persona.

  8. Does Bruce enjoy inflicting violence or does he see it as a necessary evil?

    Necessary evil.

  9. What are Bruce's flaws re: personality? His strengths?

He pushes people away and doesn't trust them as much as he should. His guilt and obsession leads him to neglect other elements in his life. He sometimes believes he can spend money on building or creating things when better solutions are available.

  10. Does Bruce suffer from any mental illnesses such as depression, PTSD, OCD, etc.?

Yes. I don't know specifically what, but clearly he isn't completely sane. It's relatively minor though, not land him in Arkham Asylum serious.

  11. Is Bruce ever suicidal? When?

    No, Tom King.

  12. What does Bruce enjoy? Can he actually enjoy anything?

He enjoys those moments of realization when Batman is the persona and Bruce Wayne is a loving father and has a lot of really good friends and family. Honestly this probably happens more in relation to moments while crime fighting with Damian, or Tim, or Dick, or Clark, but it's the little moments that he enjoys.

More specifically though, he likes building things - especially with Damian.

  13. What does Bruce's character arc look like? Does he have one?

Ultimately it's cyclical: tragic then redemptive. Whether it's a lack of trust or over-preparing, he can't help but push people he cares about away at some point.

  14. Is Bruce a tragic figure? Can he have a happy ending?

He can in an alternate universe, but ultimately while I don't think he would die or retire hated, I don't see him getting a storybook ending either.

  15. Is Bruce ultimately a hero or not?

Of course he is a hero. He's the hero we could be, flawed but based in the reality of the world we live in where we compromise where we have to but are steadfast in our most important ideals.

Skills
  1. What are Bruce's skills and how proficient is he in each?

His intelligence is extremely high, but not to the point where he can literally do anything with it like some of Marvel's most intelligent characters can. He has a huge breadth of knowledge, very good engineering skills, excellent overall martial ability. Exceptional detective and tactician. Mentally and to a lesser degree physically extremely resilient.

Basically his mind is his greatest asset (plus money).

  2. What's Bruce's strongest skill?

    Deduction and planning.

  3. How smart is Bruce?

    Genius.

  4. Does he build his own technology?

He builds some of it, but mostly modifies things than builds from scratch.

  5. How does he rank against other superheroes in similar skills? (Fighting, intelligence, etc.)

He's probably the second or third best hand to hand combatant in the DC mainline universe, and the best among superheroes. He's not the smartest hero, but he's not that far off and his capability to think differently sometimes is a mitigating factor.

  6. Should Bruce be able to pull off something like in Tower of Babel/Justice League Doom where he can take down super-powered individuals?

    Most definitely.

The Job
  1. What rules does Batman follow?

    He doesn't kill.

  2. How strict is Batman's no-kill rule? Does he have one?

He doesn't kill, unless it's a Final Crisis situation where every hero in that scenario should kill.

  3. How does Batman feel about collateral damage?

He doesn't ignore it, but he's willing to accept it if he can't foresee a better option.

  4. Does Batman use guns? If not in general, are there any exceptions?

Grappling gun and non-lethan guns on vehicles only.

  5. How far does Batman's violence go?

Sometimes too far, but he doesn't hospitalize or nearly kill criminals often. He doesn't believe in torture though.

  6. Given that torture is ineffective, should Batman (or rather his writers) use torture? Or should Batman exist in an alternative universe where torture works for narrative purposes? Would Batman use torture even if it doesn't work?

Torture is unreliable, and even in a fictional universe I don't see why that shouldn't be the case. Batman is too smart to rely on methods like torture.

  7. What type of crime does Batman deal with the most?

    Robberies.

  8. What does Bruce do to fight crime outside of detective work and pursuing criminals?

Works with the GCPD to improve their equipment, advance technology to reduce or prevent crime, a lot of philanthropic things such as establishing orphanages and rec centers. Basically any means to reduce crime be it based in real world things or ideological.

  9. How involved is Bruce in his company?

Depending on his current obsession (philanthropic or criminal), he is very hands on with one branch but neglects others. He isn't absent from the board meetings and whatnot, but he normally takes a back seat to anything that he isn't personally involved with at the time. Lucius essentially runs the company, although Bruce actually is an astute business man.

  10. What does Bruce do outside of the Batman persona to help Gotham?

Builds infrastructure to help the citizens like hospitals, orphanages, rec centers, libraries, etc. He throws fundraisers. He works with the GCPD. Basically everything he can.

  11. What is the nature of his company?

Mostly a tech based mega-conglomerate, but very diverse. Kind of like a mixture of Sony and Google.

  12. Are Batman's activities a net positive or negative for Gotham?

    Positive.

The Villains
  1. Who are Bruce's top ten villains?

    1. Joker
    2. Catwoman
    3. Scarecrow
    4. Bane
    5. Talia / Ras al Ghul
    6. Two-Face
    7. Poison Ivy
    8. The Riddler
    9. Doctor Hurt
    10. Penguin

  2. Who are his most dangerous villains?

Not quite sure what this question actually means. Joker, Doctor Hurt, Hugo Strange and Talia al Ghul are characters that can truly hurt Bruce Wayne on a deep, psychological level, but Batman doesn't generally have villains that can pose a threat to entire cities or nations the way Doomsday could.

  3. How often is Bruce fighting a supervillain versus ordinary crime?

Don't know how to answer this, but I suppose he is pretty much always fighting ordinary crime and occasionally fights supervillains. Most of his rogue's gallery are "normal" villains.

  4. Does Bruce believe in the rehabilitation of his rogues gallery? Regular criminals? Are there exceptions?

He does. The Joker is an exception.

  5. Does Arkham have a revolving door?

    Somewhat.

  6. Do any villains "reform"? From Bruce's actions?

Yes, but it's comics so it is only a matter of time before they relapse. At least for the major villains. I like to believe a lot of C level and regular criminals change.

  7. Does the Joker ever die? How?

Yes, in my opinion Damian kills him. But I'm okay with the idea of Bruce eventually killing him as well.

The Setting
  1. What tone do you prefer?

Mostly dark and serious with sporadic moments of levity.

  2. Does Batman exist in a universe with other superheroes (such as Superman) or is he the only one?

Full universe of heroes and villains.

  3. If Batman exists within the DC universe, how detached is Gotham from it?

It's like Chicago, it's a mecca of a lot of special people and things, but it's not New York or Metropolis.

  4. Do you prefer Batman to be set in a particular time period?

    Not particularly.

  5. How supernatural is the setting? How technologically advanced?

I like it to be somewhat grounded, but I'm all for some creepy horror movie type supernatural stuff. Technologically it's 5-10 years more advanced than the present with super secret technology that is even more impressive.

  6. Is Gotham the universe's New York City? Where is it located?

I feel like it's a mix of Chicago and New Jersey. Close to the east coast.

Early Life/Childhood
  1. Does Bruce experience anything related to bats like in the Nolan films?

    Yes.

  2. How early does Alfred start working for the Waynes?

Bruce is between 4 and 6. Young enough for Bruce to vaguely remember Alfred's father being the butler, but in essence for Bruce's entire life.

  3. What's Bruce's personality as a child like?

Precocious. Socially awkward but not overly so. Respectful but challenging. Loving and playful, especially with his mother. Not a brat or selfish or any of those types of childish behaviors.

  4. Does Bruce meet or form relationships with any characters that will end up being important later in his life? (Ex: Tommy who becomes Hush, The Penguin in the Telltale games, etc.)

Well, I like the idea of Tommy (Hush), and Two-Face (All-Star Batman), and Seline (Gotham TV show) but it can get convoluted quickly. So yes, but I don't think it's necessary.

  5. Is Bruce already obsessed with heroes? (Zorro, The Gray Ghost, Green Lantern [Alan Scott]?)

Yes because he sees his parents as a type of superhero duo already.

  6. What's Bruce's relationship with his parents like? (Thomas, Martha, and Alfred?)

Warm and inquisitive. His mother encourages his playful and creative side while his father nourishes his curious and logical nature. His relationship has pretty much always been the same with Alfred, although it morphed into a pseudo father/son relationship.

  7. What's Bruce's schooling like? Before the murders? After?

Private school before the murders, home school after until he left and studied at everything from universities to secret martial teachers to real world experience.

  8. Were Thomas and Martha involved in anything shady?

Not really, although Thomas did deal with Carmine Falcone and other elements of the criminal underworld when forced to.

  9. Does Bruce have a relationship with his grandparents?

    No.

  10. What movie does the family watch before the murders?

    The Mark of Zorro.

  11. Are the murders just a random mugging? An assassination?

Random mugging, although I do like when writers play with the idea of something more.

  12. Does Jim Gordon meet him that night? Does Leslie Thompkins?

    Both.

After the Murders
  1. How early does Bruce decide he wants to be a superhero?

    Early during his studies abroad.

  2. What is his training regiment like before he leaves Gotham?

Just individual ideas from physical strength and endurance training to challenging his mind daily.

  3. How early does he tell Alfred?

He involves Alfred the whole way, more or less, other than stretches during his training abroad.

  4. Does he go to college? If so, where and what does he study?

I don't know if it matters where, I mean Harvard/Yale/Colombia all suffice. He studies Psychology, Criminology, Biology, History and Business. He doesn't graduate but eventually gets an honorary Masters degree in business.

  5. At what age does he leave Gotham to go on his training world tour?

14 seems too young, so 16-18.

  6. What does he learn and who are his mentors?

Honestly too long and varied to go into. He does train with Lady Shiva though.

Coming back to Gotham and the First Years
  1. At what age does Bruce return to Gotham? Is there some sort of catalyst for his return?

26ish. No, he just believes he is ready to do what it takes to make Gotham better.

  2. How does Bruce pick a bat to be his symbol?

Flies through his window after being stabbed in the leg by a hooker and almost getting arrested.

  3. Does Bruce attempt superheroics before becoming Batman?

    Yes, somewhat unsuccessfully.

  4. Does Bruce meet Selina in these attempts?

    Yes.

  5. How long is Bruce in town before he becomes Batman?

    Few months.

  6. Does he meet Andrea Beaumont? Julie Madison? Vikki Vale?

Before becoming Batman, just Vikki? Afterwards? Sure.

  7. Who names Batman and his stuff? (Batcave, Batmobile, etc.) Are the later named in-universe?

    Mostly Dick Grayson.

  8. Which of Bruce's villains appear during the the first few years of his career?

Mostly mafia and other "normal" criminals, including the Falcone family, Maroni family, Tony Zucco, etc. Joker, Penguin, Catwoman, and Two-Face (though he begins as an ally).

  9. What mistakes does he make?

At first poor costume choice. Then accidentally creating the Joker. All the other stuff seems minor.

  10. What is his relationship with the GCPD?

A third of the cops are corrupt and hate him, a third of the cops see him as a vigilante that makes their jobs harder (or them look bad) and a third are glad there is somebody who is willing to do things they can't. Jim Gordon mostly accepts Batman as a net positive but struggles with their arrangement.

  11. How does he meet other non-Gotham superheroes?

He meets Superman first, and the others later.

  12. Is Batman a founding member of the Justice League?

    Yes.

  13. What is the nature of the public's knowledge of Batman?

Bruce Wayne funds and works with Batman, but his identity is largely unknown.

The following questions deal with Bruce's children: the Robins, Batgirls, etc. If you prefer your Batman sans a family, skip to the next section.

The Batman Family
  1. Does Batman ever get his Batfamily? How?

More or less the canon of the comics. Falls in love with the original Batwoman but it doesn't work out. Saves Dick Grayson. Accepts Jason Todd as a second Robin. Listens to Tim Drake and accepts him as a third Robin. Mentors Barbara Gordon. Has a son with Talia al Ghul, etc.

  2. Who is counted in the Batfamily? In the Wayne family? (Who is legally adopted?)

    Alfred Pennyworth aside:

Dick Grayson, Jason Todd (extended now), Tim Drake (adopted), Damian Wayne (adopted), Barbara Gordon and Kate Kane are the main family. Stephanie Brown, Harper Row, Cassandra Cain, Duke Thomas, Helena Bertinelli, Julia Pennyworth and Luke Fox.

Catwoman isn't apart of the Batfamily, but I she gets special mention.

  3. Does Dick become Robin? Nightwing? Red Robin? Batman?
    Some Frank Miller shit?
    At what ages?

He becomes Robin as a young teenager and Nightwing in his late teens.

  4. What is the nature of Bruce's relationship with Dick?

Generally very good. The only person Batman consistently works with and is "open" with about things.

  5. Does Barbara Gordon become Batgirl? Oracle? Is The Killing Joke canon? Ages for each?

    The Killing Joke is canon.

  6. What is the nature of Bruce's relationship with Babs?

Like a big brother/little sister or uncle/niece. Absolutely nothing romantic. No. Just no. Please God no. No. No. No. NO.

  7. Do Bruce and Dick still work together as adults?

Yes, although it is more often long distance communication and planning.

  8. Does Jason become Robin? Red Hood? Red Robin? At what ages?

He becomes Robin as a young teenager. I'm okay with him staying dead, but if he comes back it would be partially fan fiction so I'll just say he should still be fairly young as Red Hood.

  9. What is the nature of Bruce's relationship with Jason?

Similar to Damian's, although Bruce is younger and not as good at getting through to Jason.

  10. Is Jason ever redeemed, brought back into the family, and his relationship with Bruce mended?

Preferably Jason stays dead, but if he is brought back the relationship is fairly comparable to his relationship with Catwoman.

  11. Does Tim become Robin? Red Robin? Batman?
    Joker

He becomes Robin and doesn't become Red Robin until Damian is introduced. And his costume isn't lame...hopefully.

  12. Does Cassandra Cain become Batgirl? Black Bat? Batwoman/Batman?

    Orphan.

  13. Does Stephanie Brown become Spoiler? Batgirl? Robin? Nightwing?

She's spoiler. Maybe Robin for a short time, but it seems somewhat meaningless.

  14. Does Helena Bertinelli become Huntress? Batwoman?

    Huntress.

  15. Do Kathy Kane and Betty Kane become Batwoman and Batgirl?

    Kathy Kane is Batwoman.

  16. Is Damian born? Who raises him? Does he become Robin? Batman?

Damian is born and raised by Talia and The League. He becomes Robin and eventually Batman.

  17. Is Bruce Jr. born?

    No.

  18. Does Carrie Kelly become Robin? Catgirl? :/

She should stay in the Millerverse.

  19. I guess I should have a question about Roy Harper?

    She's a neat character.

  20. Does the "We are Robin" stuff exist?

I like Duke Thomas, so I guess so...but in an alternate universe that comic and event are much better.

  21. Is Kate Kane Bruce's cousin? Does she become Batwoman?

Yes, and yes. I quite like the idea of a literal Batfamily member.

  22. What's up with Terry?

McGinnis? Personally that's not part of the "present day" Batman story, so I don't exactly care. He's cool, and Batman Beyond was great, but it doesn't matter to me for Batman stories being told in real time.

  23. Do any of the above die? Do they come back?

Jason dies and stays dead. Damian dies and comes back.

  24. Is Selina part of the family or a rogue?

Kind of part of the family.

  25. Who does Bruce consider to be the heir to the Batman title? (Can be multiple.)

Dick is the most capable, but he wants Dick to be his own man. Tim is meant to be more than just a hero. Ultimately, it's Damian's mantle if he can earn it.

Relationships and Sexuality
Shipping
  1. Who is (are) Bruce's romantic soulmate(s)? (Gotham is a valid answer, I guess.)

    Doesn't have one. Sorry.

  2. Is Bruce only into women?

    Yes.

  3. Does Bruce actually sleep with the women he "wines and dines" for his playboy persona?

    Rarely.

  4. Who has Bruce fallen in love with, if anyone? Does he pursue any sort of sexual and/or romantic relationship with them?

Kathy Kane, Selina Kyle, and Vikki Vale. Talia was a fling. Shondra Kinsolving wasn't love.

  5. Does Bruce want a permanent relationship? Is he capable of it? If yes, with whom?

I think he wants one, but I don't know that he and Selina can ever make it work for an extended period of time.

  6. Does Bruce eventually marry or get into a permanent relationship? With whom?

    No.

  7. Who is Bruce's best friend?

Assuming people like Alfred and Dick don't count, Superman.

  8. Who does Bruce consider his friends (as opposed to family)?

Family is: Alfred, Dick, Tim, Damian and Kathy. Everyone else is a friend.

Retirement and Death
  1. Does Bruce ever die (comic book fashion) and come back or temporarily retire the Batman identity? How?

I mean...it's comics. Omega sanction, time traveling, Blackest Night goodness is inevitable.

  2. How does Bruce permanently die and at what age?

I'd like to think he dies sacrificing himself for Dick, Tim or Damian.

  3. Does the Batfamily stick with him throughout his life?

    Yes.

  4. How does Bruce's story end?

    One last mystery.

  5. Who replaces him?

    Tim and Damian working together.

Story Arcs and Life Events
Choose up to ten story arcs or events that need to happen in Bruce's life and career as Batman.

Year One. The Killing Joke. The Court of Owls. Death in the Family. Knightfall Saga. The Long Halloween. Tower of Babel. Batman Incorporated. Final Crisis.

I guess seeing his parents murdered in front of him as a child as well.

Short Version
  1. What is the nature of the setting? (Universe with other superheroes, just Batman, realistic, campy, etc.)

Generally like the modern comics: normally serious, but can be campy or over the top.

  2. What is Bruce's relationship to his villains like?

    Oddly familial.

  3. What is Bruce's relationship to other superheroes like?

Oddly distant, though there are moments of closeness and warmth. He's pretty chill with Supes though. He should work with and be better friends with Barry Allen though.

I'd prefer him and Hal to be friends though.

  4. Is Batman ultimately a hero or positive figure? Does he generally succeed in his mission?

    Yes. He's Batman.

Wait, the Mark of Zorro and the Mask of Zorro are different movies?

I'm just now realizing that I put Antonio Banderas at the beginning of the turning point in Bruce Wayne's life in my answer, haha.

I don't know if this answers any question, but I'm happy with one aspect of the Dark Knight Rises film which was Batman being able to have an end. The death of Batman, in the most undramatic way. I like how Batman Beyond dealt with the end of Batman as a force because of the gun, but there is a calmness in the film that I appreciated and am always happy with the film for that. This shot is as iconic as any other in the Batman lore for me.

Here is my response:

Appearance, Personality, etc.
  1. Describe what you think Bruce should look like. Or post a picture. Live action, favorite artist rendition, anything goes. (Doesn't have to be an actor that has already portrayed him.)
As far as physical features go, I always pictured Bruce Wayne to resemble Clive Owen or Luke Evans. (Both of which, in my opinion, would work great as the character.)
  2. What is his body type?
Strong and slim, his main attributes are his amazing agility, speed and reflexes. By no means does he look like a bodybuilder or weight lifter, though.
  3. What is the primary driving force for Bruce's crusade?
Despite his trauma, he sets his mind to defend/protect the innocent from Gotham's corrupted criminal underbelly, and strive for a brighter tomorrow.
  4. What's Bruce's personality like in general?
For the most part, Bruce Wayne is part man, part mask and persona. He puts up a show to come across as a charitable, semi-arrogant playboy, but he usually has a very strict by the book personality when it comes to business affairs with Wayne Enterprises. He rarely smiles and keeps a level head in nearly every situation, but Bruce is not above showing kindness & compassion.
  5. How clear is the division between Bruce Wayne and Batman in Bruce's psyche? (If you want to talk about who the real persona is, this is your chance.)
I always like the notion that Bruce and Batman's personalities overlap. His Batman persona is a coping mechanism for a lost soul, and Bruce would feel lost without it. Both are, at their core, trying to do the right thing and making Gotham a better place. In the end, they are two sides of the same coin.
  6. How social or anti-social is Bruce?
I like to think Bruce Wayne is an extrovert, both in and out of the costume. While he does value his solitude, he won't shy from socializing with a JLA member or chat with Alfred in a genuine conversation.
  7. How talkative is he? What's his speech like?
It varies. If dealing with trauma, Bruce tends to talk less and needs time to self-reflect. Normally, he's quite charismatic and values a good conversation.
  8. Does Bruce enjoy inflicting violence or does he see it as a necessary evil?
A tactical necessity. He doesn't take pleasure inflicting pain on others. "Even scum bags have families."
  9. What are Bruce's flaws re: personality? His strengths?
Bruce has a natural commanding presence and intimidating personality, both of which commands respect. However, he rarely abuses his authority unfairly over others. Bruce will listen and at times even accept the opinions of others.
  10. Does Bruce suffer from any mental illnesses such as depression, PTSD, OCD, etc.?
He suffers from PTSD and mild bouts of depression, but does his best to overcome those obstacles.
  11. Is Bruce ever suicidal? When?
Probably when he was younger, but not now.
  12. What does Bruce enjoy? Can he actually enjoy anything?
He enjoys the company of others, such as socializing with one of the members of his family (Alfred, Dick, etc.) He also legitimately enjoy the charities and community drives, going as far to partake in them with helping the community.
  13. What does Bruce's character arc look like? Does he have one?
Probably a mishmash of his origins from 'DC: A New Frontier' and the Neal Adams run.
  14. Is Bruce a tragic figure? Can he have a happy ending?
I like to think my Batman would have a happy ending. I always liked in the Earth-Two continuity, Bruce marries Selena and they had a daughter in that continuity, called Helena Wayne - The Huntress. They both retire and Helena fills the role of being Gotham's guardian.
  15. Is Bruce ultimately a hero or not?
In the end, he's a hero that Gotham needs.
Skills
  1. What are Bruce's skills and how proficient is he in each?
Strength and size aren't his calling cards, the swiftness in movement, fighting styles and acrobatic skills are. Even then, Bruce/Batman is a detective, first and foremost.
  2. What's Bruce's strongest skill?
Being a detective first, martial artist second. Brain over brawn, though the two will overlap at times.
  3. How smart is Bruce?
When it comes to all round smarts, there are few better.
  4. Does he build his own technology?
Nope. Lucius Fox does that jazz, but will collaborate with Bruce on his needs to fight crime.
  5. How does he rank against other superheroes in similar skills? (Fighting, intelligence, etc.)
I never like the notion of him being a "Bat-God", as Neil Adam's take is my preference for Batman. He's good, but has his limits.
  6. Should Bruce be able to pull off something like in Tower of Babel/Justice League Doom where he can take down super-powered individuals?
Not on his own. He struggles with the like of Bane and Killer Croc, and it's his ingenuity and tactics that win in the end.
The Job
  1. What rules does Batman follow?
About the standard rule set of any superhero.
  2. How strict is Batman's no-kill rule? Does he have one?
He will never take the law into his own hands. Killing someone won't make him any better than the gangsters & loons that run a muck in Gotham.
  3. How does Batman feel about collateral damage?
It depends on the level of threat. If it's a crook, then he doesn't mind, so long as the damage is minimal. If it's a heavy weight supervillain, then there isn't much he can do to control the collateral damage and will help fund construction projects (as Bruce Wayne) to rebuild parts of Gotham.
  4. Does Batman use guns? If not in general, are there any exceptions?
He will use a gun that can fire a kryptonite bullet (when Superman is taken control by a Brainiac and the like), and he doesn't mind Alfred defending the mansion with his trusty shotgun. But, generally speaking, no guns.
  5. How far does Batman's violence go?
He knows when to stop if it gets out of hand.
  6. Given that torture is ineffective, should Batman (or rather his writers) use torture? Or should Batman exist in an alternative universe where torture works for narrative purposes? Would Batman use torture even if it doesn't work?
    Never.
  7. What type of crime does Batman deal with the most?
From purse snatchers to criminal organizations. That sort of thing.
  8. What does Bruce do to fight crime outside of detective work and pursuing criminals?
I like that Bruce does what he can with public works projects and to help fund Gotham's police department and the like.
  9. How involved is Bruce in his company?
Very, as it's his family's legacy. He does trust Lucius for running the company, if Bruce ever needs sleep and such.
  10. What is the nature of his company?
Wayne Enterprises is a green company. Wayne Enterprises also includes dozens of umbrella companies involved in all sectors of the economy both in Gotham City and around the world.
  11. Are Batman's activities a net positive or negative for Gotham?
Usually a net positive, though there are exceptions.
The Villains
  1. Who are Bruce's top ten villains?
Ra's al Ghul/Talia al Ghul, The Court of Owls, Mister Freeze, The Joker, Two-Face, Scarecrow, Poison Ivy, The Penguin, Killer Croc, Carmine Falcone.
  2. Who are his most dangerous villains?
Ra's al Ghul/Talia al Ghul &The Court of Owls,
  3. How often is Bruce fighting a supervillain versus ordinary crime?
    Semi.
  4. Does Bruce believe in the rehabilitation of his rogues gallery? Regular criminals? Are there exceptions?
With the exception of The Joker and Ra's, he does believe in rehabilitation.
  5. Does Arkham have a revolving door?
    No.
  6. Do any villains "reform"? From Bruce's actions?
Harvey, Ivy, Harley, Mad Hatter, and maybe Killer Croc.
  7. Does the Joker ever die? How?
He does die. Batman kills the Joker in a moment of rage after he murders Alfred.
The Setting
  1. What tone do you prefer?
    1970's-era Batman, during Adam's run.
  2. Does Batman exist in a universe with other superheroes (such as Superman) or is he the only one?
    He exists among other heroes.
  3. If Batman exists within the DC universe, how detached is Gotham from it?
    It depends on the story.
  4. Do you prefer Batman to be set in a particular time period?
A relatively timeless appearance with the automobiles having a rounded 1940-1950s look but having more modern looking trains. There are dirigibles and helicopters, so it mixes and matches technology from a range of modern eras ranging from the 40s to the modern day.
  5. How supernatural is the setting? How technologically advanced?
It's a middle ground between the two.
  6. Is Gotham the universe's New York City? Where is it located?
Chicago is the city that heavily inspires my Gotham.
Early Life/Childhood
  1. Does Bruce experience anything related to bats like in the Nolan films?
Batman: Year One is the bigger influence.
  2. How early does Alfred start working for the Waynes?
Around the time when Bruce is born.
  3. What's Bruce's personality as a child like?
Happy, with a taste of daring and loving adventurous stories.
  4. Does Bruce meet or form relationships with any characters that will end up being important later in his life? (Ex: Tommy who becomes Hush, The Penguin in the Telltale games, etc.)
He does. The Penguin and Bruce were former friends when they were children.
  5. Is Bruce already obsessed with heroes? (Zorro, The Gray Ghost, Green Lantern [Alan Scott]?)
Hell yes! Zorro and the Gray Ghost, or any of the 30's noire heroes.
  6. What's Bruce's relationship with his parents like? (Thomas, Martha, and Alfred?)
He has a very healthy relationship with Alfred. The closest thing to that of a father figure, second only to his birth father. He dearly loved his parents, and they influenced his views on the value of life.
  7. What's Bruce's schooling like? Before the murders? After?
He attended Gotham Academy, both before and after his parents death. After he graduated from High School/University, he travels the world to hone his physical abilities.
  8. Were Thomas and Martha involved in anything shady?
Yes, and this affects his views of them when he eventually discovers their shady dealings.
  9. Does Bruce have a relationship with his grandparents?
Not that I'm aware of. Probably died before his time.
  10. What movie does the family watch before the murders?
Any of the Zorro movies, but I would place 'The Mask of Zorro' as a personal choice.
  11. Are the murders just a random mugging? An assassination?
Usually mugging or stealing from a corner store.
  12. Does Jim Gordon meet him that night? Does Leslie Thompkins?
    Yes, to both.
After the Murders
  1. How early does Bruce decide he wants to be a superhero?
As soon as he graduated from High School/University.
  2. What is his training regiment like before he leaves Gotham?
    Standard Olympian training.
  3. How early does he tell Alfred?
Before he graduates High School/University, like a month or two.
  4. Does he go to college? If so, where and what does he study?
He attends one of Gotham's highest institutions.
  5. At what age does he leave Gotham to go on his training world tour?
17/18, returns to Gotham at 21 to begin his crime fighting career.
  6. What does he learn and who are his mentors?
Monks, ninjas, heroes from the Golden Age of Superheroics (WildCat, etc.)
Coming back to Gotham and the First Years
  1. At what age does Bruce return to Gotham? Is there some sort of catalyst for his return?
He returns to Gotham at 21, to start his career in fighting crime.
  2. How does Bruce pick a bat to be his symbol?
Similar to how it's presented in 'Batman: Year One.'
  3. Does Bruce attempt superheroics before becoming Batman?
    No.
  4. Does Bruce meet Selina in these attempts?
He does, and it's as standard as you expect from previous interactions from the comics.
  5. How long is Bruce in town before he becomes Batman?
    2 months.
  6. Does he meet Andrea Beaumont? Julie Madison? Vikki Vale?
    Yes to all the above.
  7. Who names Batman and his stuff? (Batcave, Batmobile, etc.) Are the later named in-universe?
These names were given by the first Robin, Dick Grayson. Otherwise, Batman didn't feel the need to name such locations.
  8. Which of Bruce's villains appear during the the first few years of his career?
The gangster and mob bosses, such as The Penguin and Carmine Falcone.
  9. What mistakes does he make?
Learning how to strike fear, and also leaning to NOT strike fear in the innocent. (Children, etc.)
  10. What is his relationship with the GCPD?
Uncertain at first, but Gordon and the GCPD eventually warm up to Batman.
  11. How does he meet other non-Gotham superheroes?
    Eventually.
  12. Is Batman a founding member of the Justice League?
Unofficially. He's more of an on-n'-off member, as most of his crime fighting activities are centered in Gotham.
  13. What is the nature of the public's knowledge of Batman?
Some consider him to be a myth, while there have been rare appearances caught on television and people capturing rare video footage.
The following questions deal with Bruce's children: the Robins, Batgirls, etc. If you prefer your Batman sans a family, skip to the next section.

The Batman Family
  1. Does Batman ever get his Batfamily? How?
He does, and it starts off with adopting Dick Grayson.
  2. Who is counted in the Batfamliy? In the Wayne family? (Who is legally adopted?)
Dick is the only Robin that's legally adopted.
  3. Does Dick become Robin? Nightwing? Red Robin? Batman?
    Some Frank Miller shit?
    At what ages?
Robin at 8-14, Nightwing at 18.
  4. What is the nature of Bruce's relationship with Dick?
A healthy one. Bruce raised Robin like his son.
  5. Does Barbara Gordon become Batgirl? Oracle? Is The Killing Joke canon? Ages for each?
The New 52 version. After being inspired by Batman, she began working with him and his teen partner, Robin, at around 14-15. After about a year as Batgirl, Barbara was shot in the spine by the Joker. She recovered after being crippled for three years and returned to her position as Batgir
  6. What is the nature of Bruce's relationship with Babs?
    Like a father-daughter relationship.
  7. Do Bruce and Dick still work together as adults?
When they can, but Dick is busy protecting Bloodhaven as Nightwing.
  8. Does Jason become Robin? Red Hood? Red Robin? At what ages?
Jason becomes the new Robin at 14, and dies, due to his recklessness/arrogance. He doesn't return from the dead. At all.
  9. What is the nature of Bruce's relationship with Jason?
Strained. While the most enthusiastic of Bruce's students, he was also the most troubled. Brash and impulsive, Jason's former life on the streets had left him with an ambiguous sense of right and wrong. This often placed Jason in opposition to the values his mentor was trying to teach him. Despite this, Bruce still very much cares for him.
  10. Is Jason ever redeemed, brought back into the family, and his relationship with Bruce mended?
Jason is dead. He doesn't magically return from beyond the grave, and Bruce considers Jason to be his biggest failure.
  11. Does Tim become Robin? Red Robin? Batman?
    Joker
Tim becomes Robin at 16, and later takes the mantel of Red Robin at 18-20.
  12. Does Cassandra Cain become Batgirl? Black Bat? Batwoman/Batman?
    Who?

    Yes to both.
  15. Do Kathy Kane and Betty Kane become Batwoman and Batgirl?
    Yes.
  16. Is Damian born? Who raises him? Does he become Robin? Batman?
Yes, but he's actually a clone of Bruce and was used as an attempt by Ra's daughter in a plot similar to the comics. Tala raised Damian, along with guidance and trainning from the League and Ra's. Damian does become Robin, but eventually returns to the League of Shadows to take his grandfather's position.
  17. Is Helena born? Who raises her? Does she become Robin? Huntress?Batwoman/Batman?
Yes, and she becomes the Huntress, then later takes the mantle of Batwoman.
  18. Is Bruce Jr. born?
    No.
  19. Does Carrie Kelly become Robin? Catgirl? :/
I sound like an owl at this point, but who?
  20. I guess I should have a question about Roy Harper?
    Not really.
  21. Does the "We are Robin" stuff exist?
    For a time.
  22. Is Kate Kane Bruce's cousin? Does she become Batwoman?
    Sure, why not.
  23. What's up with Terry?
He comes around, similar to that of Batman Beyond, but slightly altered.
  24. Do any of the above die? Do they come back?
    NO!
  25. Is Selina part of the family or a rogue?
    Family, Bruce's wife.
  26. Who does Bruce consider to be the heir to the Batman title? (Can be multiple.)
His Daughter, then Terry. Dick was offered the title, but declined, as he wanted to carve his own path in life.

I like the idea of him being bisexual at a time, so sure, why not?

No. He just pays them and tells them to leave, as he finds them to be pretentious.
  4. Who has Bruce fallen in love with, if anyone? Does he pursue any sort of sexual and/or romantic relationship with them?
    Selena.
  5. Does Bruce want a permanent relationship? Is he capable of it? If yes, with whom?
Selena, which happens in my version.
  6. Does Bruce eventually marry or get into a permanent relationship? With whom?
    Selena.

  4. How does Bruce's story end?
He happily marries, then retires from crime fighting.
  5. Who replaces him?
    Helena, then Terry.

Dongs Macabre

aka Daedalos42
1. What is the nature of the setting? (Universe with other superheroes, just Batman, realistic, campy, etc.)

Batman works well when he teams up with other heroes, but it's hard to reconcile an universe where Batman is a prominent member of the Justice League with the idea of Batman as an urban myth who strikes fear into the hearts of criminals. A balance definitely needs to be struck between the brave and the bold and the superstitious and the cowardly.

2. What are Bruce's skills, his proficiency in each, and their focus in the stories?

Batman should live up to the name of world's greatest detective and rely more on his wit and analytical skills than anything else. He should be a world class martial artist, but he shouldn't be able to take on most of his rogues gallery with sheer brute strength. I like Batman stories where he has a problem and he figures it out through quick thinking. As much as I liked Snyder's Batman, his interactions with the Riddler and the Joker were just about him knowing obscure trivia instead of actually figuring shit out.

3. How clear is the division between Bruce Wayne and Batman in Bruce's psyche?

At the end of the day, Bruce Wayne is only a construct, a means to an end. While this is also true of Batman, since the Batman is more of an idea that can never truly exist, that's who he considers himself to be.

4. What rules does Batman follow in his crusade and what his emotional response to it?

Batman should go out of his way to save as many lives as possible, including the lives of his villains, for better or for worse. Whenever he loses a life, it's like his parents' death all over again.

5. What is Bruce's relationship to his villains like?

Batman should know his villains better than anyone else. In some twisted kind of way, they're a part of his family as well.

6. What is Bruce's relationship to other superheroes like?

Batman should be friends with the founding members of the Justice League, but I think Superman is the only one he'll really open up to.

7. Is Bruce a father?

Yes, the Batfamily is an important part of what makes Batman human.

8. Who is part of the Batfamily, if it exists?

All the crimefighters of Gotham and Alfred.

9. What is Bruce's character arc/development throughout the story?

He should start out being Batman because he is broken and filled with darkness inside, but this should slowly change as the Batfamily enter the picture and he becomes friends with people like Superman. I don't think this darkness will ever go away, though, and it'll always be part of his character.

10. Does Bruce have a significant other?

I think Batman can only truly connect with a fellow outsider like himself, so probably Catwoman.

11. How does Bruce die? (Or how does the story end?)

I don't think he'll ever stop being Batman as long as he is physically capable of doing so. Whether he dies with the Joker in each other's arms or becomes a mentor to Damian/Terry, he will continue his mission, no matter what, until he dies.

12. Is Batman ultimately a hero or positive figure? Does he generally succeed in his mission?

His mission will never end as long as injustice exists. While I think he will have a net positive effect on Gotham and on the world, I don't think he's so much a hero as he is a legendary figure. I feel like the idea of Batman as myth is something that doesn't get explored as often as it should (an example of what I mean would be The Batman Nobody Knows).

I'm just making a guess here, but are you perhaps a fan of Batman, OP?
Next time a guy calls me a fake nerd girl when I say I'm obsessed with Batman, I'm gonna hand him a print out of my questions and tell him to get back to me when he answers them all.

Jesus christ, Pau.
Did you look at the username and it all made sense?

Realistic but tinged with more idealism than cynicism.
Idealism is good.

Everyone deserves a chance (unless they're the joker)
I agree. I think the Joker is beyond redemption in Bruce's mind. But he still keeps him alive because of the implication. (The Joker has killed plenty of individual's sons. Bruce doesn't want to make it that his son is more important than the rest of Joker's victims, you know, because then where does it stop?)

Hopefully one day he'll realise that crime is a structural problem. But maybe that's not actually true in the DC Universe where crime seems to be focused around powered individuals. Then again the DC Universe isn't subject to economics.
Yeah, I don't know how you change the Batman story to be about how he combats crime that way and still have the same wide appeal. :/

Seeing as you're a batman superfan, I strongly encourage it (as long as you're okay putting up with the procedural nature of the show).
I'll check some out at least. How do the first episodes stack up?

Too many questions in the OP, all i know is Karl Urban would be a good, based on his take on Dredd, also he'd be a good bruce wayne too
I don't see it sorry. :(

OP is on Batman's outsourced customer research team.
God I wish.

A bit slow comparatively, but episode 8 it hit the fast track to my favorite series of all time.

As a Batman fan, the soundtrack is 100% Shirley Walker style all the way to the end.
Never seen a style near that anywhere else.

Caviezel was my Batman pick before Ben and as good as he was i'd still take Caviezel,
I think i'd literally cast ever cast member to a Batman movie if I could, they all fit so well.

Pau knows way more about the residents of Gotham then any sane person should. One of my favorite posters

Nerd card checking is so silly.

I like that there isn't one perfect Batman. He's too good to be one character. We got different movie Batmans, video game Batmans, BTAS, Adam West, plus all the different comic Batmans. I even like the Elseworld Batman stories.
I would be sad if we didn't have all that.

This, however I do wish I could see my definitive Batman once in a while.
I only get bits and pieces.
