Ys Community Thread | "Do you know the name Adol Christin?"

I think that fuck/shit/damn gif posted above is a bannable offense, you may want to edit that... (but I agree that I probably looked like that after dark fact)

Oh, really? Just edited my reply - is it okay now?

Has anyone played Ys 4 PCE with the fandub?

Never tried it, but I've heard it. It has a... "Working Designs-ish" feel to it (i.e. as if Vic got people he knew and payed them in beer). That's all I got to say. :p

I dunno what that is. I was offered a choice between Complete (2001) and Chronicles (2009), and I figured the 2009 version would be the better one. Was I wrong? What are the differences between the two?

Keep in mind I'm an Ys noob, only ever played Oath before that.

See for yourself:

Complete - 4.3, framed window. Has bigger distance.

ys1-1x-full.png

Chronicles - widescreen, looks roughly the same as the PSP version (i.e. zoomed in to fill the screen):

ys1-1x-wide.png

If you want to change it, run the config file and choose Complete as your display mode. That should do it.

Music and Artworks can be changed in-game.

Re: display mode: I see. Seems like having the total HP being shown rather than just a bar would be more useful, no? But that frame does look pretty nice.

You... are wearing the Silver equipment, right? This is actually pretty important.
Haha yes. I didn't realize at first, and did just about no damage. But yeah I caught on quickly enough (kinda shitty for the game to give us good equipment only for it to be useless almost straight away though -_-), I would have never managed that almost-win otherwise.

I like to run alongside when he's traveling diagonally to inflict multiple hits, but that's best for the corners because it will very likely leave you with little room to maneuver.
I do try that, but I can't get it to work consistently, it's just too fast and I always get screwed over by either falling in a hole, painting myself in a corner, or just missing the hits a few times too many and dying before him. Ugh...

Are you playing in normal? I don't remember having that hard of a time but I do remember dying several times... maybe they were a lot and I'm blocking those memories.
Yes, normal. I can't even imagine what the harder modes are like. Every time I get good headstart, I get screwed over by the lack of space after too many tiles disappear. And if I try to aim too much for the corners I lose too much time and get outdamaged. What annoys me is that every attempt feels more like luck over skill. I almost had him? Luck. I died super fast? Luck. Makes it very unsatisfying, just like when I beat the vampire (the time I did win, he coalesced into his body just more often instead of flying about for 20-30 seconds randomly.... gods that boss sucked). I've never resorted to switching to easy but it's looking tempting (assuming you can switch mid-game)...

Say in the Ruins beneath Canaan in Ys 6, you find some kind of eye monster trapped in a cocoon; whatever happened to that creepy thing? The game's intro made it seem like it was of significance.
In fact I wonder if they had a bunch of ideas for Ys 6 but could never get around to doing it in game.

I gotta say though I disliked all the exposition given from Ernst and Geis since they are given at the end of the game, just seemed like they were rushing it...

Also this just hit me: Why are there two moons in Adol's world? What if
the 2nd moon is where the Eldeen are? Sort of like what FF4 did :p

So I take it the Black Pearl is made from Emel(as)?

Time stop and barrier

Also that first spell evolves over time

Never used the former, latter was only available
at end game and I mainly used it against the final boss

It's a super-effective spell, though. And I disagree that it's the only useful one -- every single spell you get in Ys II is *incredibly* useful. Some, like Light magic, are used sparingly, but most can be used strategically on a regular basis to add a whole lot to the game (Alter magic, for example, lets you talk with monsters and get some background info you'd miss otherwise).

-Tom

Odd thing about Alter magic was that whenever I walk/run up to monsters I end up attacking them instead :V Like in Solomon Shrine.

Honestly though I didn't bother to try out the other spells because only Fire Magic was the offensive ability you got whereas in later ys games you get magic abilities that help in traversing stages and offer alterations to killing enemies (eg the spells in Ys OiF).

6 tries?? Jesus I suck. I must have retried like 25+ times (including some reloads after having bad starts). I don't even know what I did "right" on that time when I almost won. It's just too fast and frantic and my reflexes are just not that strong. I mean I'm no stranger to challenging games, I laugh when people say Rom is a hard boss in Bloodborne, but those bullet hell things are just too hard and I have no idea what I'm doing. ;_; I need to git gud but I dunno how...

You just need to memorize his movement pattern, once you do, position yourself so you are able to chase and damage him.
I think DF floats around in an infinity sign pattern.

Well, I beat him. Through pure luck lol. I was doing great, got a lot of hits in a row and had a big advance on his HP bar compared to mine... then I got stuck in the top left corner. Couldn't move away... so I prayed that his pattern would soon bring him to that corner, and I took damage for several long seconds until he did move there and died while I had a sliver left. LOL, so stupid... but oh well, I'll take it. Cheap motherfucker. :p

Dude it was the only sane way to handle the final area o.o

Every day for two weeks I would start up Ys I and sodomize myself against Nightmare Dark Fact.

Never again.
Except against the Boss Rush version which was a joke compared to Nighmare.

Did you collect all the Tabulas? I believe it was the Black Tabula that says something about it. As I understand it:
The Ruins of Lost Time are "the cave" that the tail-less ones (i.e. human followers of Alma) were toiling away trying to create their own White and Black Emelas, but only managed to make "Ash" Emelas (grey?). They used Ash Emelas to create the Galba monsters like the Wandering Calamities that periodically broke out that the Rehda were forced to fight, and Oath's Galbalan (it said it came from across the ocean hundreds of years ago), as well as the Wyvern that takes you to the Ark and at least one more that was introduced in Memories of Celceta.

Those containers all once housed Galbas. And there's still one in there, incomplete.

Always been curious what exactly they meant when they say "the Eldeen had ascended".

Black Emelas, yes. It's strongly suggested that the Twin Goddesses brought it with them when they left the Atlas Continent.

That's not Alter magic, that's
the curse that you were put under as part of the story. You were transformed into a black Roo by Dalles, and the black Roo attacks monsters instead of talking with them.

When you're not
cursed
, using Alter magic turns you into a monster that can talk to other monsters, every single time. There are absolutely no exceptions to this -- not even bosses, IIRC! In fact, there are some pretty amusing little textual extras in some of the boss battles (at least one I can think of) if you transform into a Roo during them.

Shit! Never even thought to try talking to bosses as a Roo. Welp, I still have to beat Ys II on Nightmare, guess I got me some motivation now.

Realization strikes:

Ys games where Adol can equip a shield:
I, II, III, IV, IV, VI, Chronicles, Felghana
No blocking mechanic

Ys games where Adol does not equip a shield:
Seven, Celceta
Blocking mechanic added

Ys game where Adol equips shield and has blocking mechanic:
V
Terrible game all-around

Did we ever know what happened with that Ys Seven PC port? I'm thinking of replaying the game but I'll probably just do it on my Vita.

It... released? China only, though.

It'd be much less of a hassle to just run Seven on PPSSPP than to attempt getting the chinese port to work if you want to play it on PC.

Ys 6 done!

From best to worst I'd go

Ys 3 oath in felghana
Ys origin
Ys 1/2
Ys 6 ark of naphatism
Ys 4 memories in celceta
Ys 5 lost kingdom

I'm kinda stuck in Solomon Shrine in Ys I right now :/

3B and I just can't seem to find the exit. Have been running around like an idiot for an hour and have no idea what I'm missing. Do I need to search the floor with mask of eyes more throughly or am I missing something else?

I think as a result I'm also a bit overlevelled, I'm at 180HP right now and have bought all equipment I could from Minea lol :/

Ah I can help; yes you must have the Mask of Eyes equipped at the area where there are a bunch of goddess statues.
Also FYI, don't worry about being overleveled, you'll reach max level soon enough and even THAT won't matter against Vagullion :p

I remember him being pretty annoying in Ys Origin, but nowhere near as bad as Nygtilger. You mean to say his fight is harder in Ys I ?

No it's just...well it's not hard, but it just requires patience. On the plus side, it'll be the one instant when you can truly appreciate the boss theme ;3

Looking forward to it, Ys I music is stellar so far. Maybe it's because I started the series with Ys Origin, but the games set in Esteria have captured me the most so far. From the lore to the gameplay and music, those games are something special.

Maybe Ys Oath in Felghana can manage to steal one of the top spots though, supposedly it's quite a bit better than Ark of Napishtim?

Will also have to look into Memories of Celceta, although the trailer has me a bit confused. You lost your memories and create a map of a forest? WTF lol
Combat system in that one reminds me a LOT of Tales of Symphonia from what I've seen in the trailers.

OiF remains my GOAT Ys game. It starts slow but once the game really starts, it's a fun romp as Adol kicks monster, dragon and demon ass, putting them back in their place.

Celceta is a remake of Ys 4; Adol gets amnesia after exploring the Forest of Celceta, and is tasked with re-exploring the forest to discover the ancient past and secret of Celceta.
I confess that I should get back to finishing it soon since I played is sparsely over the course of 2 years XD.

Just started my first playthrough of Ys 1...thinking of starting over and playing when I can keep notes on side-quests, as I've been rushing ahead too much. Vagullion, well, I can't help but feel manipulating the bats into clumps and half-circling around the room's perimeter, though my best strategy so far, isn't going to work. My problem is not doing the Roda Tree stuff and other favors in Minea and elsewhere.

Have finally got around to playing this series, not sure if the correct place to start was Memories of Celceta but I am having a blast. Not sure of what are considered spoilers so I'll keep it vague, the music is great, the characters seem really interesting and the story has me seriously intrigued. I am currently sorting the issues that occurred in the village you arrive at fairly early on in the game, and it has some unexpected challenge when you are fighting the enemies in the caves.

Consider me a fan of this series now!

Mine:

Ys Origin
Ys II
Ys III OIF
Ys VI Ark of Naphatism
Ys I

Which should I play next? The original Ys IV?

Can't comment as I haven't played ys 4, but between memories and 7 I think 7 is the better game fwiw. Memories does fix some things from 7 but I didn't find the story or characters as interesting and the bosses in memories sucked

Just finished my very first playthrough of the PC-88 version of Ys 1.
It was surprisingly great, and is now my favorite RPG released in 87 above DQ2, FF and Phantasy Star. Though the second to last boss (2 demon heads) was soul-crushingly hard.

Umm weren't you just supposed to attack one of the heads?

Also the PC-88's soundtracks are fantastic.

Thanks. The controls are a bit clunky and the scrolling is all but smooth but it still is very playable.

Yes. On paper it's an easy fight but the thing has soooo much HP and hurts so much that you need to stay focused for a long, long time, which I can't do easily (I blame my old age).

So I just beat Vagullion. Died a few times, but then figured out that all you have to do is stand in a bottom corner and wait for him. Bats first spread wide, then gather in one spot and fly towards you. Dodge and Vagullion will become solid again. Hit and run to the other side of the room. Repeat x9.

He's got some health though. Nygtilger (after mercilessly trapping me in a corner during the first fight) only survived three or four hits and that was BEFORE I got the silver sword.

Speaking of which...I love how so many events in this game aren't tied to your story progression but rather on the items you've got. I mean, had I known earlier that the Roda Seed was in the mines I could have just ran in there before facing Nygtilger and beat that guy with full Silver Equipment.

Love this game.

EDIT: And that was Ys I. Lovely game. Ys 2, here I come :D

EDIT2: How the fuck do I change back to using my sword? I just got Fire Magic and now can't use my sword anymore. I pressed every button of my controller, but none of them seem to change it back :/

EDIT3: Uh, well...that just happened. It's as if my brain just shut off for the last two hours o_O

Tried looking for an Ys thread way back, but didn't try hard enough. Much easier to find now since I looked when it was bumped.

I've only beaten Ys 1 and 2 Chronicles, Memories of Celceta, Ark of Napishtim. I've only played Ys V, but I've never finished it. I only got a PC a couple months ago, so I've yet to buy Oath and Origin yet (and I'm most excited for those).

At this point, ranking them would make me feel bad. Ys 1 definitely is the weakest for me, but when you combine it with 2 and see how it concludes, it feels pretty special. I'll admit I wasn't too interested in the party system in IV or the dialogue at the start. I even turned the AI to evasive so it felt like a solo game for a bit, but switched it back and warmed up to it. I actually enjoyed switching characters midway through too.

I'm mixed on how much story there was. I mostly minded it at the very beginning, but I started enjoying it once you reached the other side of the river (I didn't enjoy where I'd have to talk to most everyone in the village portions). Also, it took me awhile on realizing that the two Frieda was talking about were the characters that would appear in VI. Favorite part was probably the adventuring for me while my least favorite was the ending. I got way more out of 2 and 6's endings.

As for 6, I know people generally see this as the weakest of the Ys games after the hiatus. I can see why, but I still got a lot of fun out of it. It helps that I waited for the Steam version. Out of the games I've played, certainly my favorite regarding NPCs over the course of the story. Unlike Celceta, there were only two towns, and they were both affected by the ongoing story. Also I liked how it tried to connect the lore with the previous games towards the end again.

Last boss I didn't mind. I liked the quirky boss music and I considered the boss before that as the real final boss while this one was a fun extra to me.

Oath and Origin were the two games I wanted most when I was waiting to get a PC, but I'm still going to hold out on a sale. I might play Seven next, but I've shifted gears to Nayuta no Kiseki. The beginning is brutally slow and talkative. In Celceta, minus the tutorials they made me do, I was fine with the beginning. I hope Ys never goes to Nayuta's lengths ever.

I'd say Ys VII is about as chatty as Nayuta, overall. It's annoying when I just want to get on with the action and the characters insist on unleashing their boring exposition dumps.

Still looking forward to Seven, but that's too bad. I really do like the lore and world of Ys, so I don't mind the series wanting to go on a story route. I just want a faster beginning and more interesting town NPCs. The story portions in the second half of Celceta were fine for me, it's just that having gameplay early on (with minimal tutorial) is a must.

Yeah, the story elements of Celceta didn't bother me. They weren't particularly interesting either but I didn't feel they got in the way like they did in Ys VII.

Nayuta does get less long-winded as it goes along but the plot and characters never become more than one giant JRPG cliche.

Playing though Ys 7 now (just got blind chick and am fighting the bird boss at the end of the wind dungeon) I feel like the dialogue while greater then I'd like is still infinitely better then Ys Memories Of Celceta probably because the game has spread out the characters joining the party better and you don't have an Adol memory flash back every 5 minutes.
