Zelda: A Link Between Worlds |OT| All in all you're just another Link in the wall

Just beat the game. 3DS activity log says exactly 15 hours, ha. I desperately want to jump into hero mode but I don't want to get sick of it.

Zelda without the horseshit. Brilliant. I'll take a rehashed Hyrule where everything seems to be there for a reason over the endless miles of nothing in modern open world/action adventure games any day of the week.

Ask me about the GAF Notebook
It feels more polished and "complete" than any Zelda since Ocarina of Time. The pacing is flawless. I'm not sure if you prefer 2D or 3D Zelda, but regardless, I feel there has been a glaring flaw in every Zelda since Wind Waker, mostly pacing issues and too much hand-holding. But more than that, I just felt like each Zelda since then felt incomplete, like they were mission some dungeons, a more cohesive world, or an option to turn the intrusive hand-holding off.

ALBW is solid. If there is any obvious "flaw," it's the lack of difficulty, especially in the boss battles, but that really didn't hinder my enjoyment of the game when everything else is so spot on that it gives me a smile that never leaves my face, but grows bigger as I explore more and more of its open world!

So to answer your question, I rank it very high. It's exactly what the Zelda series needed--a return to its roots of exploration. Because of this, I feel ALBW is the most important Zelda since Ocarina of Time, and I think it is just the first step for far greater things coming for the Zelda series!

A+++ post.

Articulated what I've been feeling to a T!

Jesus. I didn't think adding nonlinearity into the mix would improve Zelda this much. I just decided to stop midway into a dungeon and exit, do some other dungeons, and come back to this one later. That's one of the things that's so great about A Link Between Worlds -- it let's you fumble around and discover your own way through the game. It's a little bit similar to the Souls games really. After discovering that first piece of
master ore
I immediately tailored my path through the dungeons around finding more pieces.

Actually, excluding the DS games, isn't ALBW the first internally-developed top-down Zelda since Link's Awakening? I'm assuming the Oracle games and Minish Cap were Capcom right?

exploration offers no rewards outside heart pieces. Dungeons give you no sense of accomplishments and I could not care less about any of the inhabitants in the world.

How is this different from any other Zelda game?

This is where your exploration went. Unless you can tell me with a straight face that the highlight of old Zelda dungeons was getting that space-filling tool that you'd whack the boss with and never touch again

I love those Obstacle Course Mini-Games you find on the Overworld, the ones with the Thief Brothers. Is there a reward for completing all of them beyond the Silver Rupee you obtain from each individual one?

I recall in the Iwata Asks them saying originally they were thinking of multiple separate-room puzzles utilizing the portrait mechanic as opposed to a full game linking them together, and I guess these are the remnants of that?

Not to lie, I'd like to see a side Zelda game that's all about utilizing equipment and such in multiple puzzles. Maybe an EShop title?

And we are excluding the DS games because... ?

But yes, those were Capcom, plus Four Swords. Nintendo internally developed Four Sword Adventure, Phantom Hourglass, and Spirit Tracks.

Though the director of the Oracle games and Minish Cap also directed Skyward Sword

I beat it recently, got all the collectibles too. It's good, but I'm sort of mystified as to why it's being hailed as the greatest Zelda ever or the greatest Zelda in decades or any of that. If the Zelda team listens too closely to the people who are saying that this and TWW are the greatest Zeldas, then I worry about the future of the Zelda franchise. The "feeling of exploration" isn't everything, in my opinion, and that's evident in this and especially Wind Waker.

And done!

I had a blast. Dungeons were awesome outside of
Turtle Rock
. Really enjoyed the open endedness. My only qualm is that the dungeons didn't stray from the theme item being front and centre. Maybe if rupees were scarce or if rentals were significantly more expensive. I don't doubt everyone was running around with all the items by the time they hit Lorule.

I'm sure a hero mode playthrough would be amazing but I think I'll hold off for a bit. 3D World this weekend and then Bravely Default the next. It's a good time to be a Nintendo gamer

Technically, but at least some of those Flagship staff were hired on by Nintendo I believe: same director for both Minish Cap and Skyward Sword for instance.

That's more due to the fact that there is little hand holding (something the 3D games are really bad for) and the game doesn't treat you like a brain dead idiot (see Fi in Skyward Sword).

I noticed after awhile the Witch didn't talk to me when I tried to warp, which I thought was the game realizing how tedious that is and shortening it...

Now I realize it's because she's a Sage and was sealed...haven't unsealed her, does she return to nagging you when warping?

Although Skyward Sword had too much text, the amount of content of forced help seems about the same. I mean in ALBW almost every time you get near a dungeon the game freezes and text tells you what you need to do. That's pretty much all Fi did. She told you what you had to do but not how to do it. Where Fi got annoying was when she would pop up to tell you stuff you already knew like "that's a boss door!"

This is the first Zelda in awhile without a clear helper character though, so perhaps that makes the hand holding feel less. There's no solid character you can constantly relate the hand holding to, so it seems more natural.

Fi mostly just reiterated what your objective was, she didn't explain to you what the solutions to puzzles were. And no, the 3D games by and large, and even the more recent handheld games, have little quests and problems to solve in between dungeons and stuff, which were either non-existent or extremely basic in this game, depending on the dungeon. If that's a game design flaw, then nearly every modern game is guilty of it. But I don't think it usually was a flaw, because it fleshed out the world more and made it feel like dungeons weren't the only aspect of the main quest.

So I decided to play The Minish Cap since I beat ALBW the other night and didn't wan't to start hero mode straight away, but still wanted some 2D Zelda on the go. I haven't played the game since it first came out and it is so incredibly slow. The world also feels a bit more cluttered with useless dead ends and such. The shrinking mechanic does sort of feel like a precursor to the wall painting mechanic, though.

What are the best items to upgrade?
Turtle Rock
is a bitch so I was gonna maybe upgrade my Ice Rod.

the ice rod makes turtle rock much much easier, its definitely one of the useful upgrades.

all in all, I think the strongest upgrade for combat is the fire rod and probably the wind rod.. I will probably upgrade them first in my hero run.

most others are not important. hammer, bomb, bow, boomerang, sand rod are completely useless. grappling hook is a bit more comfortable.

Slightly off topic, but reading all of your favorite and least favorite top down Zelda lists makes me want to stick up for Phantom Hourglass. I can't be the only one who really liked it, can I? Certainly much better than Spirit Tracks, no? It had some really neat ideas.

I'd rank it as the (admittedly distant) fourth best 2D Zelda behind ALTTP, LA and now LBW (order of top-3 may vary; right now I'm feeling LBW > all).

I loved Phantom Hourglass. I thought the Temple of the Ocean King was a wonderfully designed thing; I liked having a larger dungeon you could return to using new abilities and knowledge to further plumb the depths. I do understand people complain about the backtracking involved (though I've personally always enjoyed that very aspect of adventure games) but the new routes and puzzles which would open up as you progressed kept it fresh.

It's not my favourite Zelda or anything but it certainly was not dreadful.

A Link Between Worlds might well be top three for me though. Behind Link to the Past which is absolutely my favourite game ever (and probably plays a big part in why I love A Link Between Worlds so much).

For fuck sake guys stop listing the Zelda games, the rankings are already officialised.

Every Zelda Game > Zelda II > Every Other Zelda Game > Phantom Hourglass.

WHAT. THEY KIDNAPPED
MY SASSY BADASS WITCH PAL? She's not a sage, is she?
Naw. This won't stand. Where do I go to deal with this shit. IMMEDIATELY.

I can't *believe* these lazy developers keep making file sizes so damn large. Btw, how does technology work?
As long as we all agree Majora's Mask is the best of the bunch, we're good. Glad to see that's settled.

Just finished it. Dungeons were kinda weak compared to both Oracle games and LA, and I feel like the game suffered a lot from the non-linear progression and having to try and accommodate the problems that come along with it. Honestly I think it's one of the weaker 2D-isometric Zeldas, down there with Zelda 1 and Minish Cap.

Still one of the better games released this year though for sure.

EDIT: Oh, and does anyone know how to knock the maimais out of trees and rocks and such? I ignored them for the bulk of the game because I thought I'd get some running boots or something that would let me tackle things to shake them out (like in prior 2D zeldas), but I never did lol...

thats correct, you'll need the boots for that
you'll get them
from the guy standing around in hyrule kakariko

You do get the pegasus boots. You can get them pretty early on in the game (after the first dungeon if you visit Zora's Domain?) from Kakariko Village. The ones in large rocks you just pick up with the Titan Mitts which you definitely collect in one of the dungeons.

Man, this game was great. I just finished it at 17 hours. Found all maiamais, all upgrades. Only thing I skipped were the minigames since I don't really care for them.

I tried playing ALTTP before this one but I just couldn't. I hate how Link moves, the combat, everything. I understand it was great for its time but I didn't have a SNES so I don't see it with nostalgia (and I don't really like retrogaming). ALBW, however, was awesome for me.

I loved the combat, I fought and killed every monster I encountered. Gameplay was superb. First game I left the 3D on for the whole time as well. I mostly enjoyed the dungeons except for the fact that they all seem so sterile. Perfect bricks everywhere. The ending made me want more fleshed out characters, though. Other than that it's a really polished game. I hope future Zelda handheld games build on ALBW.

Sunk a little more time into the game and now I've got Ravio renting all the items. Can I truly do the dungeons in any order? Is there any preferable path or is it all about exploring the world and choosing your own course?

Also fuck me that Lost Woods music is so good

almost
one item from ravio is missing, the one for the desert palace. you will need to do thieves town first.
thats the only restriction, all the others can be done immediately.

i've seen this bastard lots of times.... what's the trick? I was assuming that I'd have to
get boots first to catch him. only idea i've got is firing arrows or hookshot at him. didn't yet try, always forget then I see him but he runs before I think about it

Imagine if
you could jump out behind his back without him noticing.

Don't I need something for the southernmost dungeon?

No, you shouldn't need anything, just explore the overworld a bit more for that one.

I've played about 4 hours, and this is where I'm at too.
I thought you had to go to one of the 2 dungeons marked with an X on your map after the first one, but I guess other people are saying not.
.

Anyways, I'm really enjoying this game so far.

Are we talking about
swamp palace? So I can get the big bomb flower past the boulder without the titan mitts? I desperately want that blue tunic, hero mode is killing me

You can just buy the damn thing from the guy inside the house next to the Bomb Flower for 200 rupees.

I don't really think whether its "internal" matters considering Nintendo was happy enough with the those games to absorb a number of the staff into Nintendo.

which boulder? the one next to the plant?

or the one on the way somwehere? you can take a detour north, just take the way you would take yourself on foot. I did swamp palace before desert, so its definitely possible
