Oh boi

Ive always been fascinated by this comic based on its cover. Is it a good read?

Not to mention all the talk of how heavily influenced this film is by John Hughes and The Breakfast Club in particular, in which one of the main characters does this...

I'm confident they're going this route with her character.

Funny thing is, Ally Sheddy looked better as the quirky goth chick than in her makeover.

The thing is she's isn't supposed to look like a model, when you consider Homecoming is looking at Spider-man loves Mary Jane, and Ultimate Spiderman.

Ultimate Spiderman even subverted the Tiger Jackpot sequence by having MJ just be a pretty looking high school girl who played on the fort date she had with Peter.

she was doing really weird and stupid shit in that film but i think she looked way better before the makeover.

I agree with you there, but I think that has more to do with how her "post-makeup" look in the film was very much a thing of the 80's. In contrast, her "pre-makeup" look is something that's become more popular/accepted in recent years.

It's more the general idea really that I'm talking about: MJ starts off as a frumpy-looking girl who Peter doesn't really stop to think about and then floors him at the end of the movie when she goes into "Jackpot" mode for the Homecoming dance.

absolutely...another shot of her from a different scene...she has the same look:

Now, will there be a scene where she's all dressed up and looks gorgeous? Most likely, but if she is indeed playing MJ, THAT is what MJ looks like in the MCU. Not a redhead, not a supermodel while in high school, just a very pretty HS kid.

I'm glad they look like high school students this time and not 30 year old hollywood actors.

Thats frumpy looky? If they go this route marvel is officially in cw territory.

Why is this photoshopped image going around? She does not look like that in the movie. The movie's filming already, scenes have been shown, and in them, she's a kid in high school with brown hair, and she looks like this:

That's not going to change.

How do you know it's photoshopped?

Eh, I don't necessarily think she looks "frumpy" in the set-photos myself. I was debating with some folks at another forum earlier about this casting and their choice of words there kinda bled into that here for me, I think. Personally I think she looks more "Girl Next Door" in the set photos than anything else.

My bad there. lol :)

I do think they're probably going to downplay Zendaya's looks for most of the film though in order to pull a twist at the end for the Homecoming Dance. If they don't go that route and decide to keep this direction for her entirely for this entire film series, I'll be fine with that too. Ultimate Mary Jane was awesome as hell.

Yeah i figured what you were meaning i was just poking fun that downplaying her looks when she is already a natural supermodel would be something id expect from cw lol. Like they arent even making her look more frumpy like hermoine in the first two movies.

I just have one question ...

Would people be okay if a major character in Black Panther who's originally black was played by a white actor ? Instead of having an all-black cast ?

Because it goes both ways IMO ... Diversity seems to mean "non white" nowadays.

Whereas to me it means "people of all colors".

if race is an important part of their character then it matters what race they cast. characters like Peter Parker or MJ could frankly be any race. how do people not get this?

Can you give me an example of how any story would be, or has been, affected by MJ's ethnicity?

Because were you to provide an example from Black Panther, I could assuredly show you an example of why that person's skin color is relevant to his or her story.

Stupid fucking false equivalencies.

How many Black Panther Films have been made to date, compared to spider man films and how many spider man films is about a specific racial background?

That would be a problem because discrimination doesn't go both ways.

Magneto. White. Polish Jew. Holocaust survivor. Maybe you could change the Polish to Russian or French. But he has to be an old Jew. Take that away and you're destroying everything that makes the character who he is.

There's nothing inherently white about Mary Jane Watson. You probably can't even tell me what kind of white she is without searching a wiki.

You have different groups of people who do not stand on equal ground. Minorities and White people are not equally represented in media, neither in sheer numbers nor fairness.

It's not all or nothing. Sometimes it matters, sometimes it doesn't, but it matters more for minority representation because they've been historically under served.

You guys aren't even trying to understand my point ...

I didn't mean to replace Black Panther himself but like someone important to him. A black side character who's black in the comics and isn't particularly defined by his race... Would it be ok ?

That's the most stupid thing I've read all day.

I fear that just posting this image only does not contribute anything to the thread, so I will simply suggest you do some reading about the history of casting and diversity in entertainment and then circle back to your thoughts.

Bruh, you're not trying to understand the point though. All Black Panther Characters are essential.

Yes, except for the fact that the amount of black actors (and other minorities) in hollywood are but a fraction compared to white people.

So, for the story, it wouldn't matter, but for diversity and steps toward giving minorities roles in entertainment, that would be a huge step back.

Lol NOPE I'm not.

You guys act like anti-white racism doesn't exist.

I think you should come live in the Paris neighborhood for a while.

Ok, this really is going to be a 'white people matter' thing then isn't it? I tried to give you the benefit of the doubt but I can see it's pointless now.

so you wanna take more roles away from black people that aren't trash erotic thrillers and madea comedies, and give it to yet another white person

is that right

like that would be even stevens ya know. That'd be about square.

They'll always have gods of egypt and that new movie about Matt Damon saving china.

That's the most stupid thing I've read all day.

It wouldn't make any sense for the character because Wakanda is a racially homogeneous country. On the opposite end Spider-man's social circle being entirely white when he's a poor kid from Queens in 2016 makes no damn sense. Also diversity is "non white" when media is historically overwhelmingly white.

I'm torn. On one hand, she's WAY better looking than the last Mary Jane Watson on film or the one that nearly happened in ASM2. On the other hand, she's too Disney-nice to pull off the "hottest woman in New York" attitude.

However if she pulls off the intro, I'll defend her to my dying breath.

Not this shit again...How about we make Luke Cage asian and Black Panther a white guy instead. That's okay right?
Nothing against Zenyatta, I'm just sometimes sick of corporate decisions of disregarding the idea of being a faithful to the source material just because of whatever reasons.
Who's mans is this?

Race is often a major factor in Black Panther comics. In Spider-Man, its not.

Also cmon you can't be serious
