Wat. Ok, now that's a weird casting choice. Not because of her hair color but because of her age and the barrier that poses for her working at the Bugle. Despite being Peter's first major love interest, she's still more of a minor character in the Spider-man pantheon who is mostly defined by her job at the Bugle (and later marriage to one of the Hobgoblins).
I don't think they'd waste the character's name by changing her completely so there has to be something else to it if the rumor is true.

So this is just a rumor so far. Interesting if true, to be honest I never seen a white actress that gave me that "MJ look or feel" there's tons that give a Gwen feel just not MJ. Maybe because, while I'm not saying this is the case. MJ always seemed like she had qualities of different races other than white in the comics. Like her facial structure, hips, and body in general.

She's not going to be a model in high school, they're going for regular kids here, if she's MJ, she'll get there. I'd like to see this approach where Peter is having a crush on Liz (Thompson's girl) while MJ is around him all the time and he doesn't see her as anything beyond a good friend/colleague... until Homecoming dance.

So what is it that makes her calling him "tiger" not superfluous? Or could it be that they're both traits from the comic book character people would like to see represented?
Compared to the last two Spidey film franchises it's pretty good progress.

yeah this is perfect. MJ and pete will go through the movie as just friends and nothing more until pete's original date for the homecoming dance ditches him for someone else and he decides not to go. meanwhile aunt may finds out and fixes him up with MJ and pete will be all like "aunt may, we're just friends why'd you do that?!?! I don't like her like th.." but then the doorbell rings cutting pete off mid-sentence and MJ is standing there all done up (potentially with red highlights in her hair or something) and pete's jaw will hit the floor. ::cue "face it tiger" line::

Zendaya's character is going to be introduced as the new girl Peter's school, having recently moved into the neighbourhood and is seen as something of a mystery. Peter will interact with her fleetingly a couple of times, but for the most part the character will very much stay in the background. She comes across as a scruffy, unassuming girl who Peter connects with but who the audience doesnt really get to know in detail. Throughout the movie, Peter will be struggling to find a date for the upcoming homecoming dance, most likely while trying to deal with the villainous antics of The Vulture.
After Peter fails to get a date on the night of the homecoming dance, just before he exits the house, Aunt May will reveal to Peter that she took the liberty of arranging his date for him, having set him up with the daughter of one of her friends. Horrified, Peter opens the front door and...

Ok, I'm fine with this. Looks good. I hope they don't do the thing where she's dyed her hair red for the dance... If you're going to make a change, commit to it. I wonder what else they're changing... Maybe this MJ is into STEM instead of modeling, and that's how she bonds with Peter? Who knows.

No, they're totally not setting her up for a plain Mary Jane is actually hot "Face it, tiger! You just hit the jackpot!" scene because that wasn't a memorable moment in the comics at all. I can understand having a preference for a character but I don't understand how hair colour is a deal breaker for some people. Dunst had red hair but I doubt many people would say she was their ideal MJ.

Have you ever seen most fashion models when they're just normally hanging out. That's pretty close to the look.
