It wouldn't make any sense for the character because Wakanda is a racially homogeneous country. On the opposite end Spider-man's social circle being entirely white when he's a poor kid from Queens in 2016 makes no damn sense. Also diversity is "non white" when media is historically overwhelmingly white.

Thank you for providing an intelligent answer instead of all the insults I've been getting. Now I can see your point at least.

I just have one question ...

Would people be okay if a major character in Black Panther who's originally black was played by a white actor ? Instead of having an all-black cast ?

Because it goes both ways IMO ... Diversity seems to mean "non white" nowadays.

Whereas to me it means "people of all colors".

Posts like these are at best naive and ignorant as fuck, at worst? Concern trolling/diet racism. It doesn't go both ways. The playing field is not equal by any stretch. A character like Black Panther's race and background are an integral part of his character. For a character like Mary Jane, and most other popular comic book figures, the only reason they are white is because they were created in the 40s/50s/60s where it was the only acceptable option because society was way more racist and segregated than it is now. in these instances I have zero problem with shaking things up. If Mary Jane's race is that important to you as a fan, that's entirely your problem and I'm glad MCU isn't letting people like you have input into their decisions.

You'll forgive some of us if we're impatient with ignorant remarks that we've been hearing for decades.

And I'm getting insulted for mentioning that anti-white racism exists in some urban areas as well. Well I do suffer from it, often. But I guess it doesn't matter ...

Anyway, to me it's not even about racism anyway but accuracy. I would have been just as disappointed if she was a white blond girl ...

What the fuck? Kirsten Dunst has always looked perpetually 37 to me.

I thought she was very attractive in spidey 1. Then not so much in spidey 2 and 3.

No amount of pretty can make up for what a terrible actor she is, though.

No, you're getting insulted for spouting silly false equivalencies that we hear ALL. THE. FUCKING. TIME. Hardly anybody has even commented on your "anti-white racism."

Maybe you should use that as an opportunity to see how other minorities feel about these things, you know, empathy, before spouting silliness.

You are not getting insulting for mentioning that anti-white racism exists. You are getting insulted because your initial post about Black Panther reeked of ignorance and concern trolling, and you were called out for it accordingly. Tell me, do you think there should be a White History Month? Do you think White people should get their own television network? After all, "it goes both ways", right?

I wonder why they don't just create a new love interest for Peter who's not Mary Jane ...

I'm not convinced people would be upset if they just used someone else.

If they just said she's Michelle something, wouldn't it be ok ? Why does she have to be Mary Jane ?

Because Mary Jane is an important figure in Spiderman Mythos. Ultimate Spidey, from which they are undoubetdly cribbing some of the story, had an excellent interpretation of the character.

There is no reason to create new characters when Spidey is so deep in lore that you can use what is already there.

People that are mad about this...who gives a fuck. They need to have their reality shaken up. This is awesome.

Don't know the actress but have absolute faith in Disney/Marvel casting at this point. Couldn't care less about what race she is. It is good that Disney/Marvel seem to be pushing for more diverse casts, which was a legitimate criticism during the early MCU stages.

she was 18 in spider-man. Zendaya is 19

This blows my mind actually.

Not that it should surprise me that much. One of my housemates looks like she is like 25 years old yet just became 19 and another housemate of mine is 22 years old and looks like she just came of secondary school (which means 16-18 years old here, depending on the level).

Still, Dunst looked way older in my memories (even after googling some pics).

Because it's almost always been Mary Jane. Why is it such an issue that she isn't white?

I'm convinced that Marvel doesn't give two shits about catering to the kind of people who would be upset because Mary Jane Watson is suddenly black, and personally I'm glad they don't.

Why can't she be Mary Jane? Seriously.

Her skin color doesn't make the character, nor should it make a character. It will be sad when the movie is "ruined" for people because MJ isn't white but then they say, "well I'm not racist but MJ has always been white so that is how it should be"

Shits fucked

Because Mary Jane is an important person in Peters life and they want to have her in the movie?

I think she also just seems older since she's been in the public consciousness for so long. Spider-Man 2 came out a decade after Interview With A Vampire. She's been around for a long time.

You are seriously doing a bad job of hiding your true feelings. Just be forthright: you're upset that a black woman is playing MJ.

Don't come in here complaining that people are bullying you and not sympathizing with your "reverse racism" and then continue to post ignorant stuff like you're doing.

Keep digging that hole, just be honest you clearly have a problem with Zendaya being a black Mary Jane Watson.

I'm just pro "accuracy" and want the characters to look as close as possible to their source material. Don't even try to judge me or to know what I think ok ?

Well you should stop posting things that make it quite easy surmise what you think and judge you accordingly.

Did you just completely ignore this post:

Source material for fiction is stupid. Sure the story should be the same but having her being black isn't going to change the story is it?

It won't be "hood spiderman" all the sudden, to which people seem to think that's what will happen.

Man...onscreen spidey going to kiss a black woman.

Miles about to kiss Gwen in the comics.

Interracial couples everywhere.

you should re-read ninja scooter's post and ask yourself if you really want to be 100% accurate to the time period that those characters were created in

Accuracy to characters' skin colour is a fucking blip on the radar when we have PTSD Clobberin' Time and Mystique heroically leading the X-Men shitting up other Marvel movies. There's far more important shit when it comes to an accurate portrayal of characters in film.

Stop saying blatantly stupid shit and people
wont negatively judge you. Lmao @ "pro accuracy". Find me a comic book rendition of Aunt May that looks anything like Marissa Tomei.

It seems to matter most when it's essential to a character. It doesn't matter that much what Mystique's role is relative to the X-Men in the movies because that's not really an essential part of her character, but if she's not a shapechanger anymore and instead has flame powers...well, that's not Mystique is it?

For most characters I don't think race is an essential part of who they are. In Mary-Jane's case, the red hair is something that's stuck out to people over multiple decades of that character's history and I hope they don't get rid of it.
