Titanfall Beta (PC/Xbone) Impressions (No Key Begging/Trading or I will ban you!)

Decimating a room full of bots doesn't make me feel like a bad ass. It feels kind of cheap. I'm more worried about an enemy human catching me in the act than taking damage from them. Maybe if they would at least scramble a bit more instead of standing stationary most of the time. That way they can still be cannon fodder, but a bit more of a challenge.

Finally got the damn thing installed and I keep getting the "no servers found" error over and over. Looks like I'll just have to try again later tonight. For awhile I couldn't even get it to detect data center servers.

Dammit. I was in a game but backed out, and yeah, now it's not finding anything.

Yea just did the same thing, made it to level 6 so far, game is pretty legit, i'll be picking it up on release day. Other then servers being down I havent had any technical issues so far.

On a more technical side [PC] of things for those of you who like that, does the game seem really poorly optimized to anyone else? I don't even get a smooth frame rate on the recommended settings on my 560ti, which were double buffering, medium textures, everything else maxed (1080p). I'm not sure if it's my card showing it's age or the game; as battlefield 4 really hasn't been giving me too many problems on high. I turned down several of the settings and it runs mostly ok now, but I would really love to have it turned up a bit more.

i think that's the point of the bots, you can kill them to get titan quicker but it gives away your position (unless using a surpressor) and distracts you from other pilots

Does anyone want to get together and play together if we can when the servers come back? Seems like the kinda game where having two or more players working together would be very useful like shooting the enemies off the back of your mech.

edit: On pc that is.

Played 6 matches before the servers went down. So far I'm a little disappointed to be honest.
Also really surprised how it runs on XB1, tearing and frame rate dips. Was expecting solid 60.

I have a 280x and everything maxed 2xmsaa and double buffering. Game runs super smooth for me.

Yeah hopefully they sort the framerate problems out for the XBO version - as I might consider going with this version.

Came to post this as well. Double Buffered, Triple Buffered, doesn't matter, the stuttering is awful. D3DOverrider doesn't seem to work on this game either so I'm stuck using in-game settings, or try forcing it in Nvidia Inspector with no triple buffering. Hopefully this is fixed in the final game because I can't stand screen tearing.

Try disabling the Origin overlay.
I had this weird mouse stuttering earlier, but it's gone now after updating Origin + GPU drivers and disabling the overlay. Not sure which of those things fixed it but it seems to be fine now.

I've noticed some hitching with my 580/4670k (4770k? I forget. I've got a 4xxxk). It mostly happens when I'm in a titan, or there is a titan near.

Loading is also pretty damn slow even though the game is on an SSD (I guess because it's all server side).

Sure add me on origin but be warned i am playing for the first time and am not good in fps much. THe only fps where i play good is killzone and MOH:MW.

Hopefully I can remember to try this when I get home later tonight.

Ok neat if anyone else wants to add me feel free.

What? Im level 14 in the beta and played hours and hours of the alpha and I can only remember one real time when the FPS crashed and ive NEVER noticed screen tearing. Seriously theres almost 0 FPS drops

I blame the loading on it being source engine, so w/e.

I think my card is the bottleneck here, I have a 2500k running at 4.2ghz, unless the overclock is causing issues (it's not a heat problem, I at least know that).

edit: you know what I bet the problem is? Drivers. Totally forgot about that, I'm probably behind a version or two.

Add me to Origin if any of you PC guys want to play; Kade451.

Also, I think the title should say "No Key Discussion" or "No Key Begging/Trading" because people are still coming in and are obviously missing the ban warnings. If it doesn't fit then never mind. Or possible post the warnings in the OP.

That can't be. I noticed it in every match - as soon as Titans are on screen it's starting to hitch, especially if they are burning and smoking.

Spent 5 hours with the game today before server errors. Hit the level cap. Loving the hell out of this game. I actually like the bots. Keeps the level busy and makes it feel full while not overcrowded as I feel human players would. Balance between Titan and Pilot is nice. Game is fast-paced. Each match feels different. And I have had no graphical issues to speak of. No screen tearing. No framerate drops. Nothing. All in all, they've earned my Day 1 purchase and I intend to play more of the beta once the servers get fixed.

It already has no key begging in the title.

Wow, you must be completely framerate insensitive.

There are significant framerate issues and frequent tearing.

There's definitely some tearing and the framerate needs work. Nothing that would effect gameplay, but the presentation takes a hit.

I've played about 1.5 hours so far on PC. These's are my impressions.

Graphics/Sounds:
---Feels like a Call of Duty game on the source engine, for sure. If you're expecting mind-blowing graphics, you're going to be very disappointed. I don't think it's because it's beta. I think it's just because it's a Source game. Having played Call of Duty: Ghosts on PS4 in November (some of you may have watched that stream), I would say that Ghosts looks slightly better in single player HOWEVER, Titanfall looks better than Ghosts' multiplayer.
---Stuttering issues. I shouldn't have any issues streaming and playing this game. It feels like something is hogging resources in the background. This is probably just because it's a beta. I've played enough betas to see this ironed out in the final product.
---When you first drop in a Titan, the sounds and graphics are awesome. Probably something I look forward to every time is just watching it crash into the ground. When you first experience it in-game, it's something to cherish. And the first time you get gracefully swooped up and tucked into it's chest is tear-jerking good.
---You can set you FOV in PC to 90!

Gameplay:
---The first time I ran into a hallway and a Titan dashed from out of view to right in front of me, my adrenaline pumped up and palms produced beads of sweat. Pretty awesome first match for me.
---Gunplay is very simple. There's no recoil at all. It feels a lot like Quake III in that sense. You see a pilot/titan and just hold down the fire until you get an XP score and see your name owning their name.
---The A.I. bots are boring and horrible. I've seen both sides of the argument and I'm going to say that they need to either remove them or revamp them. I wouldn't mind cannon fodder DOTA bots (which is what they are) but the real players... I can't ever tell if I'm chasing a pilot or bot until the name shows up.
---Not as twitchy as I had hoped for. I don't know if anyone remembers the "Brink" game, but it feels as twitchy as that game. Nothing like old-school Quake/UT games. Nothing wrong with that though. I don't mind it being a little slower honestly. Feels perfect at it's current speed. But if you were expecting UT/Q3, look elsewhere.
---Parkour feels tacky. If my videos saved on Twitch, I'll take my examples and upload them. I've rocketed myself a few times into the air on accident using the parkour/double jump system. It doesn't feel like Mirror's Edge in fast motion, or even as smooth as other games that have parkour. I haven't really found my balance with it. Right now, I feel it's a gimmick and a bit cheap.
---Stealth mode is fair. Titans haven't seen me yet while stealth and I can get a cheap shot on them. Other players seem to always see me. I guess I know why. You can clearly see their slightly invisible bodies standing there or running around. Shotguns come in handy for those stealthy sons of titans.
---The strategic use of Titan and pilot is amazing. This is my absolute favorite part of the game. You have a few options to utilize your Titan and I really didn't know how fun it would be to just be a pilot. I'm currently preferring the pilot since one of the ways you can take advantage of the battlefield is to just have the Titan guard and while you (the pilot) runs around defending it. You basically get double the damage from everyone on the field. This is how I've seen myself increasing my kills. Otherwise, jumping in a Titan and keeping it healthy by using shields and managing your attacks will just keep you from dying from crossfire or another player (since bots are not going to really get a kill on you).
---Maps feel a little small. This might just be because I come from Battlefield 4. They're probably the same size, or slightly bigger, than COD's maps. Personal preference obviously.
---The auto-target gun isn't that bad. I first wanted to hate it but it's not too shabby. The assault rifle is arguably the best weapon to pick at my level (5).

Overall:
I'm giving this a shot the entire weekend. Some days I'm not completely feeling a game. After 1.5 hours, I'd say that I've seen Titanfall and it's not a system seller, but it's a load of fun with some gameplay issues. Again, this is just my initial reaction and my honest one. I just hope it's not what it feels like right now: just another Call of Duty with mechs.

Worst thing about the game so far, and something that will drive me away quickly, is the bots OR just the lack of finding pilots. I really don't like how this is put together. I feel if they're not in Titans, I am not running into them.

Helpful hints:
For those playing, try placing the Titan on follow until you clear out an area. I've had way more kills outside the Titan than inside. Them things blow up good. But they also do a lot of score increasing if you have it battling a Titan while you use anti-Titan guns.

Yeah, I finished downloading a hour ago, went through the training (Did pretty good with the traversal; barely touched the ground), backed out to mess with the video settings, and got the no server error when trying to go back in; guess that's when the servers went down.

Oh, and as with any Source Engine game, you can skip the EA/Respawn intro movies if you use the "-novid" argument (no quotes) in the Game Properties window in Origin.

Thanks for the tip, didn't even know that.

Your XBOX ONE seems to have more secret sauce than mine.

I'm having a blast, albeit with some minor annoyances.

I love Hardpoint Domination- securing and defending with strategic Titan usage is rad! I really dislike the concept behind involving grunts on the battlefield as well- often I get overzealous firing at these dummies, while a real Pilot is nearby. I also really enjoy the movement- such a breath of fresh air zipping around everywhere. I think this makes it much more difficult to be precise, but I've been having moderate success with rapid fire guns.

It surely isn't a looker on PC, and I'm running it with some V-Sync problems (680, i7 3770K, 8GB). I tried changing it to double/triple but didn't want to settle for the screen tearing. Fraps tells me it's running at a smooth 60 FPS, but the screen judder with the V-sync problems makes it feel less like it. Just hit level 14 on PC, loving the gender option for Pilots too.

Enjoying myself thoroughly- haven't played an FPS seriously since COD4!

Dedicated servers would have been nice. :) That's my only negative impression so far...the rest of this beta has been pretty fantastic.

That can't be. I noticed it in every match - as soon as Titans are on screen it's starting to hitch, especially if they are burning and smoking.

This is also my experience. Since this is a beta and I don't need it to look that great, I've got almost everything on medium. My GTX 580 is a couple gens old at this point but considering that it'll run Crysis 3, Metro, etc, without this kind of hitching, I definitely think it is the game.

THis is me right now

Played for about an hour, up to lvl5. It's a lot of fun, and I don't think I'll ever get tired of seeing my titan fall out of the sky or the boarding animation. That said, I don't usually play these competitive COD/BF type of shooters for long, but I can see the appeal in TitanFall for those who love this stuff, now with mechs! Only thing I'm not entirely fond of are the bots. Sure they make the battles seem larger in scale, but they're braindead and tend to obfuscate the human opponents.

Despite hearing from people and gaf that this game is ugly (even on pc), I find the sci-fi trappings and vistas are really attractive.

Only technical issue right now is the odd stuttering I get with in-settings Vsync enabled. Will look into that.

For some reason I got a Xbone code instead of a PC code. I don't have time to try the beta right now so I'm sharing my code. Quote to reveal.

After Halo 3, this is the first FPS which I'm addicted to.

If you told me a week ago, that I'd want to buy TF on day 1, I'd laugh at you. After few hours of playing this on PC, this is my new addiction.

beta is really fun. I actually like the bots too - keeps the game alive and feels good to kill people.

Here's what I'm missing - where is the kill noise? I drop people and besides text, don't hear a noise. disappointing

also wish there was a way to quickly know who is human. I can tell if they jump randomly but otherwise, I would like to target them first

tearing and frame drops is disappointing.
