Racist kids pissed me off today

I need to vent GAF.

I work at a liquor store in a college town. We get customers from all over the world.

So today, a bunch of the Norwegian students decided to throw a "Mexican party."

All day long I've been dealing with these fucking assholes in sombreros, ponchos and fake mustaches buying tequila and Corona.

Some of them even had dirt on their face. I asked a girl why and she responding by saying "because Mexicans are dirty!" Like WHAAAT THEEE FUUUUUCK?????

I asked one if they were any actual Mexicans at the party and she just gave me a blank stare. Like I was crazy for asking that.

The worst part is that every time I tried to explain to them that what they were doing is fucked up, they responded by saying that it was all in good fun, or that they weren't trying to be offensive or that it was no big deal etc.

I just left work and I'm still fucking angry. None of these kids had any fucking awareness of what they were doing. In a town where a lot of Mexicans live and work.

FUCK, man!

How would you caricature Norwegians if you were to throw a 'Norwegian party'? Honest question

It would not be a fun party. There would only be lutefisk and watery coffee. No one would stand too close, and the only sounds would be small talk about the weather.

No doubt those kids are stupid, but why are you taking so much time out of your day to think about their dumb party?

Needs more Smalahove.

Sorry to hear about that, OP. Just take comfort in the fact that they're jackasses who don't know any better.
Why would it matter if there were any actual Mexicans there?
Because it shows that these kids don't understand that Mexicans actually exist. Like they're real human beings and not some racist caricature.

It's ok to be racist if you don't know you are one?

If there's no ill intent, it's not racism, just lack of knowledge. Was I a racist when I repeated things from 1940's Looney Tunes episodes as a kid, not knowing what they meant or the history behind them?

The dirt was taking it a bit far. The Mexican stereotype type seems almost acceptable in modern and popular culture, though, doesn't mean it's right but eh, Europeans probably wouldn't know any better.

Sounds likes a ton of people I knew back in high school. The "I was just joking" line was the worst part. Heh. Lots of ignorant people out there.

It's weird how much racism I experience towards Latinos, or Mexicans, or whatever the correct thing to call people from Mexico is, in my local area in Oregon. It's weird because they're right next to the white people in terms of numbers here, but I constantly hear racial slurs being thrown at them. It's a pretty rural area in terms of white trash, but it's still super annoying to hear racial slurs all over town whenever anything remotely related to them happens. The mentality I've seen most commonly is that they don't view it as racism, since it's not against black people. Yes, Albany Oregon is a very shitty place to live.

But the one thing I know, is that I can get a pretty fantastic burrito at a couple places in town and they are by far the most customer friendly places I have ever been in.

It could have just been considered a cultural celebration with the ponchos, fake mustaches, and sombreros. Even the tequila and coronas are certainly associated with Mexicans; they have no inherent negative connotation like perhaps Irish drinking. It's not too far of a cry from food (tacos, enchiladas).

But then ya got to the part with the dirty face :|

I would have to say that they are indeed at least somewhat racist.

I dont mind they use the sombreros, ponchos and mustaches.

But i think the dirt thing and the statement "because they are dirty" is offensive, tbh.

Not need to get angry, stupid people comes from everywhere.

I was pissed even before the kids with the dirty faces came in.

Or the one guy dressed as a taco. Like, seriously bro?

But other than that i don't think they intended to offend anyone. They were probably doing it as a part of a joke or something.
Sucks though that you had to deal with that.

Me and my buddy (both white) wore oversize sombreros blasting mariachi music in my truck on the Vegas strip.

Am I a racist? :(

Not necessarily. Depends. Were you also impersonating offensive caricatures of Mexicans?
If you had a Mexican friend see what you were doing, would you feel umcomfortable? why or why not?

Op, before a big argument starts to develop on whether or not it is racist, I think you should define clearly what the word "racist" means to you, because in nearly all racial threads, I've found there always seems to be two different mindsets towards defining what is and isn't racist. Some think racism is defined only if the offense is out of hate for that race. Others think racism is defined as, no matter how small the offense, it is racism if it involves a negative stereotype or negative reaction from the offended party.

"Because Mexicans are dirty!" Oh yeah, definitely not racist. None of this is excusable.

You are way too concerned about the way racism is being used here. The topic is basically that the OP is surprised that people can be ignorant enough to dress up as caricatures of a Mexican. This is made worse because they don't appear to know any Mexicans, which would have hopefully expanded their worldview to make them realize a party like that may not be a good idea. I think the cultural insensitivity at display here overwrites any concern about the way the word 'racism' is used.

For the record, I would call this racist. But I don't like definition arguments since it always clouds up the important points about race/ethnicity topics.

Well, i used to work in a call center for directv, and maybe is because i have heard every insult you can imagine against the mexicans (being called a monkey at least once a day). I mean, dont even get angry anymore, i only felt kind of sad that some people think im a kind of sub-human just because of the place i was born. Dont get angry, if you wanna say something to somebody about that do it in an educated manner and thats it, dont sweat it.

They will learn, if not, life will make them learn,

racist, even in the most strict standard, means prejudice + institutional disadvantages.
In the case of mexicans and hispanics in the US (as an example) both definitely apply.

These people definitely had prejudice (not only stereotyping but also words like 'dirty'). All of these attitudes and exclusion promote institutional issues Mexicans currently face in the US.

Racist.

Funnily enough, a few of my friend's friends were kind of being a bit racist at a get together today. I just shrugged it off though.

This however is on another level. I honestly don't know how I would have reacted.
