Dark Souls II |OT2| Prepare to Vengarl

I think so far the bridge on Iron Keep (and even the level itself) is the definitive area for coop and pvp's.

It's a hotspot
literally

And the method to kill him by
making him attempt a chasm jump when chasing you and then hitting his hand a few times till he fell was hilarious. Such an off-kilter way to kill a boss.
Haha yeah that was great. I thought it was clever. I do like fighting him head-on, though. He's very easy once you understand his pattern.

I was using that helm with Llewellyn chest and gauntlets for a decent while, until I got (end game gear spoiler)
Vendrick's helm. Can't resist putting a sweet crown on my character, plus it obscures less of his face.
I'm not a fan of how a lot of helms cover up your face and head, though some look cool. A hide-helm option would be neat when you have a helm with good stats that you don't think looks great.
I'd love a hide-helm option. I used it in Kingdoms of Amalur. Are there any helmets that don't hide the face except for
Vendrick's crown, which looks a bit too royal for some of my toons?
I haven't found an equivalent of a Silver Coronet or a Crown of Dusk yet.

I don't know how you were meant to kill CD, the only way I found was pelting him with arrows.
Wait til he slams his tentacle down, dodge it, then wail on it. Rinse repeat.

As far as BoC goes I never got the hate for it. Killed it on my first try, thought it was disappointingly easy.
Wow. Did you use the reloading trick between each side? I didn't know about it, and I find it impossible to not fall in those stupid pits.

yeah i do it too. the purists are always like "if you're having trouble managing health then don't get hit derp".
Yeah like you'll never get hit by anything ever... stupid. Even worse for PvP, where high VIT is very much part of the metagame.

When I replayed Dark Souls recently I started with a Thief - who only has a 9 in Vitality - and didn't upgrade the stat at all the entire game. Fights just felt a lot more rewarding because of that, especially against bosses like Kalameet, who will one-shot you even on NG when your Vitality is that low. SL1 runs can be similarly fun but I don't like how those handicap offensive capabilities.
Most of Kalameet's attacks didn't OHKO me at SL1 (I used RoFaP though). I like it better that way. Having every attack that OHKOs is too punishing and not very fun, honestly. Sure, having that one OHKO attack that you really need to dodge can work, but every one? Meh. Kalameet is way more fun to fight than the
Ancient Dragon
, not just because of the OHKO thing, but because his attack patterns are far more varied and it makes for a less tedious and more fun and exciting fight.

Not sure if this has been asked but, it's a spoiler regarding items in Forest of Fallen Giants:
You get some crap treasure. Hawk ring and flame quartz+1. Not much of interest down there.

Be careful in there. ;)
No kidding. Those salamanders do not fuck around. Hardest normal mobs of the game? I think so. Well, those
golden knights
in the D
ragon
S
hrine
are no pushovers either. Ouch.

I'd like to know this too. I've been using a Mace +9 almost since the beginning of the game, and a Sun Sword +10 for the past 20 hours or so.

Sun Sword? I didn't realize that was any good at all. Personally I'm partial to my Craftsman's Hammer, Great Club, and Greatsword.

I gotta say, even with the "downgrade" the (late game boss)
Looking Glass Knight
fight is pretty damn atmospheric and cool. All the rain and lightning flashes still add to the mood for sure.

Yeah that fight and the hallway leading up to it were awesome. I'm probably easily impressed though haha

I like it for two reasons: at +10 it scales A with both DEX and STR, and I like having a lighter, faster weapon for some areas.

Beat the game in just under 60 hours. I took the time to find all the covenants, but didn't really enjoy them (or do the optional side content).

I feel stuck as to what to do next...

1. Start a new character (probably deprived)

2. Enter NG+ immediately

3. Farm/Clear Out remaining stuff in NG and then slaughter the NPCs.

4. Play around with various covenants.

5. Replay DS1.

6. Finish Demon Souls.

7. Read GAF

Good deal. Now I have that Bastille key and can access even more doors I missed. I am having a blast just going back doing some mop up for now. Felt really good going back better equipped and laying waste to those Gargoyles by myself as well.

I'm lttp and started yesterday.

Some impressions, thoughts and questions.

What is the consensus on Adaptability? I have read some stuff suggesting that, at least as far as PVP is concerned, it is Luck 3.0. If so, me starting as a Bandit and proceeding to never level adaptability seems like a good strategy.

My plan is to level Vigor, Vitality, Endurance, Strength and Dexterity to 20 to start with, and then take it all from there. I want high levels in both Str and Dex to try out lots of different weapons.

Starting the player off without a shield seems like a good move on From Software's part. Teaches you to two-hand early on. I did buy a nice shield though, but hopefully I will still keep up the dodging and not hide behind a shield all the time as I did in the previous games.

I heard the limit for fastest roll is 30 % of equip burden this time? I didn't really notice a difference between just below and just above 30 %.

Will torch time be sparse throughout the game? For fear of running out of torches I didn't use it in the tutorial area. I did do fine without it, but I wonder whether they would hide some secret items behind lighting up the sconces in the area. Since you couldn't leave any messages there, I didn't get any hints, but I am contemplating going back to see what happens.

I wasted all my arrows and some lifegems on some giants close to a chest. The chest seems to do fuck-all, so that was a waste of resources. I did get a ring drop though from the giant in the very first area, so it's not all bad.

I was nearly killed by some fucking pigs in Majula. Wasted like 5 lifegems. Why are there enemies in a supposedly safe zone, and why are they so damn hard to kill :(

Maiden in black >>>>>> Emerald Herald

I sort of suck at these games. I guess Company of Champions is not for me?

Oh and I got a cracked red orb. Can you still only use them in human form? And I heard something about an HP penalty for failed invasions. Does anyone know more about this?

uh so, in earthen peak
there's a part where an enemy runs away from you and locks a door if you dont kill him fast enough
i looked it up and pate and the ladder guy are both behind that door. what the hell do i do now?

anyone? :) :\

Just finished the first play through as a sorcerer a little earlier. Truly brilliant game, as is the series on the whole. I'm not someone who can generally sink many hours into the same game without a break, yet I put 65 hours into this (as I did for DeS and DkS1) and didn't feel a hint of boredom. Can't think of another game or series where that's happened.

On the whole, the bosses probably were easier than previous games, especially after getting the more powerful spells. Using
chaos storm
felt like a win switch at times too.

That fcuking
Ancient Dragon
though. Probably took 4/5 hours or trying & dying. And I have to say I loved every minute of it :D. Didn't really expect that after doing
Throne Watcher and Defender and then Nashandra
on the first attempt (solo).

Time for a break for a week or so and then back on the PVP and NG+ saddle :D

I never did much PVP in Dark Souls. Thanks to the bellbros, I've probably done 10x as much by now. I do feel a little bad when back-up is summoned and it's me and another bellbro against one victim.

Then I get my titanite chunk and yay upgrades I forget about it.

I'm trying to get the Berserk Blade at
Belfrey Sol
:

So...
Do I need to be in the covenant for him to spawn? Also some places say it's only in NG+ while others say you can get it the first time, does anyone know?

Well my time with Dark Souls II is at an end... for now anyways. I beat the game (saw yet another confusing/huh ending - at least From Software is consistent with this lol), beat most optional bosses that I wanted to (namely
Ancient Dragon and Vendrick
), anddd... I think I ended my playtime at around 62~hours at level 169.

Overall, I really enjoyed it. I don't care about doing comparisons between the Souls games, but it's at least on par with Dark Souls 1. There are some things I liked more about DS1 and other things DS2 did better. In any case, I had fun, but time to move on!

How i did it:

Either burn a Bonfire Ascetic on NG, or just play NG+. He's a rare enemy and you need to constantly rest at the bonfire until he spawns, good news is that his respawn is infinite. You don't need to be in the BK covenant but i'm not 100% sure about it.

End game.

Can't you access the trees memories after you beat nashandra? I only did one, killed her, and now it doesn't prompt me for the other trees.

I am tempted to try that as well in order to get a few chunks. But yeah, I get double teamed every time I set foot in Luna and did again just a few minutes ago, lol.

anyone? :) :\

Have to go the long way.
You know the path that has poison on the floor
?

Are you guys talking about the
red phantom
?

I'm SL 228 and still get summoned constantly when I put my sign down in front of a major boss door. I love how active the online is in this game (for now at least).

any point to paying the laddersmith 12k for the ladder?

If you pay for the full ladder you can descend it to a platform that leads to three chests that let you access Great Lightning Spear and Soul Vortex early. Not sure if there's a way to get them without the ladder.

Yeah, I keep seeing these "when do I find better str weapons?" posts. They've all been using the best str weapon the whole time!

Thats what I'm findout out as well. "The Greatsword" is acquired fairly early, and is much better than all Ultra Greatswords I've tried so far. It has like a 2ft reach advantage on any other Ultra Greatsword and has the best 360 degree punisher with insane range (roll + R1). The moveset is amazing and so is the damage. I've tried Persuers' UGS, Smelter Demon UGS, Black Knight UGS... nothing compares. The only thing left to try is the Curved Dragon GS. I'm not expecting it to be better though.

PS. I've been using only this weapon for PvP and my win/loss is something like 50 W 5 L. My proudest moments include winning a 2 v 1 ganker attack at Belfry SOL.

The Bastard Sword seems like a good compromise between the speed of a shortsword and the power of a greatsword

Not sure I like it enough to upgrade it just yet, the Fire Longsword+3 is still doing work

Do it. For every win you get you are awarded a titanite chunk, and at the 20 kill devotion mark you are awarded a
titanite slab
!

Its way better than farming from a finite supply of enemies, and half the time when I am summoned to their world they are already dead. Free chunks yo.

Another tip for people going for the Benhart or Lucatiel summon trophies:

You can
, using Bonfire Ascetics, summon the same NPC for the same boss multiple times in order to get the achievement; you don't have to summon them for entirely different bosses. I used three Ascetics on the Brighstone Cove fire and re-fought the Prowling Magus three times with Benhart (having him live obviously) because it was easier than letting him live through the Mirror Knight and Giant Lord! His summon sign is always in the same spot right after you use the Ascetic. Regardless, you need to summon him three times total, same as Lucatiel.

Lucatiel is a little tricky and less is known on whether this method works for her. Apparently if you talk to her BEFORE having summoned her three times at Aldia's Keep (her final place you can talk to her before she disappears, she won't give you her equipment and will disappear when you come back. Not too sure on this one as I already had summoned her three times before speaking to her.
What happends after you
have beaten the same boss 3 times? Where do you find the NPCs then? Now i've spoken to Lucatiel at 3 different locations and i havnt beaten any bosses with her yet. She will only appear in Black Gulch and in Aldia's Keep from here. Do i fight all the bosses with her and ignore talking to her in Black Gulch?

Is there a perquisite to get items to drop from the black dragon knights at dragon shrine starway? Really would like their weapons. So far zero ddops with +item find gear on.

The real Dark Souls starts here.

I feel like there's so much armour I don't have, I wish there were pictures of it all online somewhere but the wikis are still pretty sparse.
This one of the best aspects of the hardcover guide - I dont look up how to get the stuff, but at least I know what to look out for! Best $20 bucks anyone will spend on Souls if you can find a cheap copy. I paid closer to $50 with rush shipping in Canada.
Is there an objectively "best" (Ultra) Greatsword that one should focus on upgrading? I have a fully upgrade Black Knight Halberd (which is good), but for enemies/bosses that you can only hit like once before having to GTFO of there, I'd rather have something even stronger.
Gyrm Axe?
How do you unstone that woman?
there are items you can acquire through the
Licia
lady path change...you have to go pretty far but only have to do one boss if you now where to go.
Look above, or just read the last three or so pages.
Hey, thanks for doing this...reminds of the teamwork that went on at the launch of DEmon's....figuring this stuff out as a community is half the fun.
Nice one. I'm pretty dodge heavy at the moment, so I need to get the most out of it. I'll chuck some in Equip Load too, just in case.
I realize the thread moves quick so I will repeat briefly. My best guess is:
Agility = speed roll
Equip burden = length of roll
I-Frames - your guess is as good as mine but prolly a combo.
For the record, I think EB is more important that agility; but agility does something, it was the only stat I really pumped at the start of the game and with my first character which I scratched, and large improvements in roll recovery were noticed. If you want a spoiler vid on 90-100 agility and a LOW equip percentage early game watch this
pursuer
boss fight.
I am in the
bell
keeper covenant and still get invaded!?
Yeah me also...trolled big time as I though it might prevent invasions, went offline and kiled the
NPC
invader, still no change. Gottta beat boss i guess. It looks like you can summon help there though, not like
Rat
version.

My rat friends always find their man.

I'm having way too much fun with this covenant.

I wish killing other players yielded more souls lol... That's my only complaint. Have you done the RatBros at the "
Doors of Pharros
"? Its really impossible for the gray phantoms to win. They spawn in water and cannot run lol. I immediately poison them with Toxic mist and watch my homies do the work. I actually feel like its pretty unbalanced for the party being summoned, there is almost no way they can win.

So I'm currently at
Duke's Dear Spider Thing
. I'm guessing that he's
the second great soul, judging from the red haze
. Which makes me feel like a total moron, because I still haven't been able to access crafting of boss souls. I found the
blacksmith who wants an ember
but I have no idea how to do that. I'd really like to know if I've missed something, because once again, I feel like a moron carrying all these boss souls.

She will only appear in Black Gulch and in Aldia's Keep from here. Do i fight all the bosses with her and ignore talking to her in Black Gulch?

For Lucatiel,
and for Benhart, you NEED to speak with them in all locations regardless of whether you fight bosses with them or not, in order for them to be at their final location. For Lucatiel, this is at Aldia's Keep (the first bonfire). Speaking with her in Black Gulch is fine as you need to talk with her before she is available for summon against the Rotten. Her final area like I said is Aldia's keep so ignore her there if you haven't beaten three bosses with her yet.

I forgot how stupidly overpowered magic attacks can be in PVP. Getting hit by projectiles that are landing nowhere near me.

He appears in your first game, I know because I used him to rank up the bell keepers covenant. You may have to be part of that covenant and be wearing the ring for him to appear, but I'm not sure on that. I know when I was farming him that is what I was doing though. I also didn't power up the bonfire or anything like that. Just normal first game, in the covenant, and with the ring on.
