Frozen
It was pretty good, it's still no Lion King :p

what even is?
It did outsell it though, along with every other animated film in history.

People want to make Frozen the new disney classic. It was really good, just not Disney Classics good.

'Let it Go' is good, but it's no 'I'll Make a Man Out of You'

I like both songs a lot but Let it go is more memorable. It doesnt matter because neither one is Beauty and the Beast or Circle of Life.

But I just found this amusing giving the movie.

Click-bait at it's most basic.

Man, even the kids are noticing.

No, no, no, god no!

That panda-cat dance. Too cute!

Huh, so the other teachers really aren't a harem for Tsuchida. That's kind of refreshing, actually, for him to have a normal relationship with his coworkers.

Mahouka

Not even 5 minutes in and another anime hits me with another round of incest.....*sigh*

I knew I should've just stuck to Jojo and Mushishi(and HxH of course).

Knights of Sidonia Episode 01

Glad to see the good background art has translated well into this show.

I'm also a sucker for good CG user interfaces too. It's not quite Yamato 2199-tier but it's good enough for me.

While the show looks really nice in stills, the CG animation suffers from a weird frame-rate making a lot of the motion very... janky as a result. It would actually look pretty good otherwise but it ends up as being a little distracting and I think will ultimately turn off a lot of people unfortunately. I got used to it pretty quick but I'm also not completely averse to these kinds of things so yeah. Really enjoying what's been introduced of the OST so far (especially the OP song) and the overall sound direction is very solid. Things like ambient noise, electronic devices, and dialogue all sound great.

I've been liking what I've read of the manga so far and this is shaping up to be a good adaption all things considered. It's a pretty straightforward mech story with some really interesting concepts and if anything I hope it gets people to at least check out the manga if they can't deal with the CG.

Symbolism-The Show

But yeah, I think I need to switch to the subs for this one. The only English voice acting I like is Keitaro and, oddly enough, Kitsune.

Light Novel HELLL!!

Mahouka - 1

Given the rep its had over the last few days I was expecting far more offensive than I ended up getting. Though I think people have overrated just how much the magic system was "explained" I still find that its presented in a pretty neat fashion, with the effects in particular being fun to watch and well animated. Fights between people having elements of both hand to hand and magic based combat also has me interested to see where the series is gonna go when actual battles start popping up. Despite all this I can't say that the first episode left me much of a direction for where the series is going to end up going, there's no established threat as of yet to make me think that it plans to go beyond the highschool setting. We'll see in the coming weeks I guess.

As for the incest overtones ... didn't bother me at all! Thanks anime!

No Game No Life - 1

I actually ended up liking this one as well. Really vibrant visual style combined with a pretty neat execution of a "trapped in alt. world" concept. Guess I'm a sucker for overpowered protagonists or something because I ended up really enjoying the way each sibling dealt with the games and exposed the cheaters involved. Most certainly interested to see the direction this one takes. On a surface level it reminds me of Hunter x Hunter's Greed Island arc just made into a complete show.

Trigun 1-11.

Trigun 12
WTF tone change. Just who is Vash?

Knights of Sidonia 1 - I found it interesting, but pretty cold emotionally. I do kind of want to know more about both the masked leadership and the unknown folks living in the bowels. It cant of simply been this guy and his grandfather.

Knights of Sidonia - 1

Awww yeaaaah, here we go. This one definitely has been on my radar for a while as decent looking SciFi shows are pretty few and far between. Initial trailers implying that we'd see a lot of action and space and action in space solidified my giving this one a shot the moment the first episode became available.

Im not sure if it's something that's intentional or not but I don't think I've ever come across a show where the CG seems as choppy as it is in this series. I have no issue with the CG's look in and of itself but the humans portrayed in the show just really don't move in a fluid fashion and it's definitely jarring compared to the otherwise smooth movements of the mechs. It's seriously distracting because it applies to pretty much all of the human motion in the show, moving a hand, walking down a corridor, even the movements of the mouth while talking all seem to run under a noticeably lower FPS than anything else in the show. If there were any direct analog then I'd say that they almost look like clay animation. I could get behind Aku no Hana or Ping Pong or any other show that rocks an inherently unique art / animation style, I can get behind CG used as the main choice for character art, but the animation in this is not something I think I can get used to.

Naruto Shippuden 358

Splendid filler episode.

They handled the beginnings of the Coup d'etat with the village and Uchiha extremely well.

Loved those Shisui moments from his quick encounter with Ao, the betrayal with Danzo, and his untimely death.

Itachi activating Mangekyo Sharingan and reading the stone tablet were good scenes as well, but my particular favorite was that small scene when Sasuke and Itachi accompanied their mother to visit baby Naruto.

Always thought it would've been neat to see Kushina's best friend see her baby boy.

Yeah this was a very good filler episode even though its canon. I think the recent arc has been one of the better ones simply because its closely related to the events leading to the Uchiha massacre and gives us a behinds the scenes perspective.

Ping Pong 1

firehawk was asking whether the coach had just one voice actor - apparently he does, some guy called "Tei Ha" who I can't find any other credits for at present. Just like "China", his actor is clearly Chinese.

His name is Cheng Bo actually. Both Chinese actors in Ping Pong do narration work for radio/TV in Japan apparently.

Okay, I guess it is list time of things that I liked this season, a bit limited since you know it is early in the season, in no particular order.

Tonari no Seki-kun
Ping Pong The Animation
Akuma no Riddle
Ryuugajou Nanana no Maizoukin
Baby Steps
Majin Bone
Jojo's Bizarre Adventure
Captain Earth
Soredemo Sekai wa Utsukushii

Still a few shows I am on the fence about and a few I have not watched yet.

Order of the five anime I think will be the best of the season:

Baby Steps
Ping Pong
Captain Earth
One Week Friends
Mu Shi Shi

Honorable mention to The World Is Still Beautiful. I've liked everything so far except for a few shows I've already dropped.

Like the Clouds, Like the Wind

This is a 1990 made-for-TV anime movie set in China, about a young country girl who wants to be the Emperor's wife so she can get three meals a day and plenty of time to sleep. It's also yet another story about the dying days of a Chinese empire plagued by feuding lords, scheming eunuchs, and rowdy rebels. So it definitely fits a lot of existing patterns, but it's far more effective than I expected.

Where I think it really succeeds is with tone. It's a tale that starts really light. The heroine, Ginga, is a young, energetic, and curious girl who leaps at the opportunity to possibly join the Emperor's harem of wives without really understanding what it entails. The whole cast is pretty exaggerated, and there's plenty of humor in how the different characters react to Ginga's crude and childish manner.

There's the eunuch who chooses to take Ginga to the castle, frustrated with her unrefined ways as much as he's convinced by her potential. One of her fellow wives-in-training is a haughty noble with a big forehead assured of her success compared to the commoners that surround her. Her teacher at the school appreciates her inquisitiveness even if her honesty occasionally shocks him. There's a good variety to it, and combined with the expressive animation (The animation was directed by Ghibli vet Katsuya Kondo, with Mitsuo Iso in the key animation credits!), everyone is very easy to like.

But the tone gradually shifts darker as the political intrigue escalates, and that makes the stakes feel very meaningful. It's not despair-porn or anything (that would have caused some mood-whiplash), but it's still a real enough tragedy to sting. There's a scene where Ginga breaks down near the end, and I was surprised by how close to tears I was. She develops a lot from the innocent girl she was at the movie's beginning.

This isn't an amazing, revelatory work, but it's a very well-made work from an era of animation I don't have much experience with. I'm glad I watched it, and I'd say if you think that kind of story sounds interesting, you'd probably enjoy the execution.

Good to see its not only me and DTL that liking Haikyuu!!, sport show truly getting more attention recently.

Also leftover from previous season, Ace of Diamonds seem gonna hitting the stride with its tournament arc. Good times for sport anime fan indeed.
