Only 1.2 million Xbox Ones shipped in Q1, and expected channel inventory draw down in Q2 (meaning stores have more Xbox Ones than they need) is pretty damning, I agree.

Draw down is normal during this upcoming quarter. Even with a launch being only 6 months before. Even Sony's orders will likely drop as retailers are now getting regular stock. My local best buy's have had dozens of both systems the last month every time I'm in there. Its really a seasonality issue.

Yeah, I believe that is the consensus (and the conclusion that I come to as well). I brought it up here again because there are some that talk of dropping the price of the Xboxone to $399 or even $349 without Kinect (to boost sales and catch up), but to think that MS would do that and take such a large hit on their bottom line is somewhat crazy -- though still possible.

Sony initially took a bigger loss than that selling the PS3 at $500 and $600 at launch. So definitely not impossible. They wanted to push Blu-ray adoption though, I don't know what incentive there would be for MS other than just selling more consoles.

I think it's absolutely safe to say that it's doing fine in general but the disparity between the PS4 sold to consumers and XBO sold in to retail has got to be concerning, especially given the amount likely spent on the push accompanying the launch of Titanfall (ad spend, bundling, locking up exclusivity, etc.) and whatever dispensation they gave to retailers for the huge amount of bundles out there last month (because I doubt that retailers just ate all that cost).

Plus, another concern for them has to be the network effects that a widening gap would create. Given that both cost for multiplayer and given that increased online buying is likely to encourage the use of one ecosystem over another, the wider the gap, the harder it may be to get buy in from people who have friends with the competing platform.

And though I know the Tier 2 countries may be insignificant in the larger scheme of things, giving Sony a huge head start in countries that are already favorable to them in the first place just makes things worse.

Man, I wonder how many of these sales are to people who own PS4's as well? Stuff like MGS:GZ selling way more on PS4 makes sense to me if you consider that a lot of Xboners may already have PS4's that they consider their primary systems.

I really want to see MS get aggressive with some new strategies, be it price cuts or something. I don't want Sony sitting there uncontested. Plus, Gears of War won't come out until 2016 and I don't need the system tanking before it gets to come out!

In terms of overall sales it's already over. Even if MS undercut them,they arent strong globally. Even the year headstart wasn't enough and now its different with sony leading early.

Aggressive bundling with a lower price point than the PS4 might help to narrow the gap, but it's unlikey to close it...

China is a still a great unknown too. Will be interesting to see what happens there over the next few years.

There really isn't that much of a difference tbh. I'm surprised that the gaming press hasn't picked up on this more. I guess Nintendoomed articles get more clicks..?

Except the real money is coming in from xbox live subscriptions which have grown. The loss of launching a new console was expected and they hit their goals. So these investors shouldn't be upset. They're thinking short term and not long term.

At some point, if you cut the price too much too soon, people will see your product as poor. There's a very fine line between affordable and cheap (in the bad sense of the word)....

I know I'm going to get ripped on this, but the point is that it is too early to declare a winner.

Last gen, Microsoft effectively sold a gaming console with a lower price point and a great array of games (like the ps4 this gen). I have noticed though that many people have said that they started to lose interest in the x360 around the time when the Kinect was sold - as less exclusives were coming out then. What is to say that Sony won't start pushing VR games with a higher priority so that they can recoup some of the development costs of Morpheus, just as Microsoft pushed the Kinect at its time. After all, both were meant to be gaming accessories. The point is that it is impossible to declare a winner yet.

Right, I edited my post shortly afterwards. I still find the 360/PS3 comparison to be the most analogous to the current one we're in, however, especially considering they are targeting similar markets where as the Wii reached a much wider audience.

you don't know how confused i was reading this point. I am even more confused after finishing it. Despite what GAFers including myself thought of Kinect, 360 sold way, way more AFTER it got the peripheral. For your analogy to be correct, PS4 would leave XBO even further in the dust after Morpheus arrived! Kinect is only a burden now because the fad passed and Microsoft and other developers have demonstrated nothing that suggests it works well for most games.

But I don't think VR is going to have any weight this gen. Sony can push what they want, but they're not going to convince large groups to pay for a $299.99 (even $199.99, let's be super generous) goggles on top of the price of their system. This will be a system-to-system contest, and Sony just happens to win that fight this go around.

That's true. I guess it really does rely on what their priorities are. I personally believe that they'll keep Kinect bundled in -- not for games, but because of the wealth of information that they get from it (and can use to sell targeted ads and Nelson-like TV/Netflix data).

There's the chance that the revenue they get from those ads and data could be enough to push them to sell the hardware for an even bigger initial loss, if they believe they can make it all back.

This is untrue. Wii U shipped 3.5 million and had sales to consumers between 2.5-3 million.

Marathons generally have consistent speeds throughout, maybe a few of the middle participants run slower than the beginning and end people but not by much

Console sales ebb and flow greatly over the year with a huge percentage of them around the holidays. Not only that but in the past, consoles sell best in 2nd/3rd/4th years anyways while tapering off later in the generation. Marathons put the fast people in the first position and the last position

Reminds me of that one Olympic swimming race a couple years ago. There was this like 15-20 minute swim and one girl swam super fast in the beginning and all the announcers kept saying how she'd get tired out and lose her lead. She won gold and by a pretty big margin.

7 months - June 30th, 2007 - 4.2 million
