Datablitz sells some Play Arts KAI figures but otherwise V-Mall/Shoppesville are your best bet. Too bad Toycon is already over

K, thanks. I'm sure there are a ton of Play Arts figures I wouldn't mind having bought for me; I can remember several off the top of my head that I want. It would be nice if I could get my hands on some of the harder-to-find Revoltechs too.
Are most of the places out there pretty reputable? Because she isn't going to know what to look for in a counterfeit.

EDIT: Wow, Toycon looks awesome! I wouldn't ask her to go for me, because I barely want to go to a con myself. I wouldn't put that on her. But I suppose I should go to at least one con at some point. Maybe I'll go next year.

Pretty sure, yeah. Some of the stores have Facebook pages or websites too like http://www.greattoysonline.com/gto/

My best friend who is Filipino is going to bring me some leftover food from his Christmas dinner. Let's all get excited. (he's bringing me some halal stuff anyway.)

I think we forgot about this thread.

I would like to hear, which books I should get in order to learn Tagalog a step at a time?

I already got "Basic Tagalog" by Paraluman S. Aspillera.

Jollibee!! Bring them to jollibee. Actually pinoys love to eat. Pinoys have this love for rice cakes, lechon, and adobo! But yeah, just be respectful. Filipino family ties are tight and it is highly valued.

omg please dont bring them to jollibee. there are tons of restos in the philippines that are much more refined than a fastfood resto. if you bring them to jollibee, you'll be considered as cheap

I wouldn't care if one would be considered cheap. Jollibee is king! :D

But I really wonder how I can learn Tagalog. I'm 25 years old and is half-Filipino but have never been able to speak or understand Tagalog, which is sad to me.

I have now started watching Filipino movies with English subtitles, and I am taking a look at books but most of them seem to be only phrases and words and not actually teaching the language.

I don't know how to learn it. Maybe force myself to think in Tagalog and talk Tagalog every day..

I was born in the Philippines, pure-blooded natural born Filipino, lived there until I was 10 years old and can still only barely speak Tagalog lol. I can mostly understand it, but I have practically no accent. The only way to learn, just like any language, is to keep at it and practice speaking as much as you can to people who can help and correct you.

Probably the best way to learn, apart from living here and being immersed in the language. Once you've become mildly familiar, you can try watching the news.

It's kind of hard to learn Tagalog from a book, since they usually teach you grammatically correct phrases that are no longer commonly used (or are considered quite archaic). Since I came from the south, I tried improving my Tagalog by reading and paying attention to my Filipino classes, but what really made me improve was volunteering in Gawad Kalinga and watching teleseryes.

So yeah, watching teleseryes is a good idea, but immersing yourself in the Philippines is much better.

Chinese/Filipino here, but raised in Canada.

While growing up, my parents spoke to me in mixed Tagalog and English all the time, but they didn't really care if I spoke either Tagalog or English back. I dunno, maybe since everything else (school, no Filipino friends, internet and overall surroundings) was in English, I just got used to answering and talking in English.

So now, strangely, I can fully understand fluent Tagalog when someone speaks to me or when I'm reading it, but if you asked me to actually say something to you back in Tagalog, my mind just goes blank.

I'm 21 now, my parents and a lot of my relatives have tried to help me speak, but my mind just constantly reverts to taking English words and sentences and translating them to Filipino in my head before saying it, instead of speaking it straight fluently. So when I try to actually say something in Tagalog, it takes me like 10 minutes to think of the words and what comes out of my mouth sounds like a really bad Google Translation.

It's like I'm one-and-a-half-lingual :/

Once when I visited my grandparents back in the Philippines, they were all speaking Tagalog to me and I understood them perfectly, but I had to respond in English and it felt really awkward. I felt like I was disrespecting them, luckily they all knew me and the situation already but I still felt uncomfortable. :(

I think the best way to really learn a language is definitely to be immersed in a place where everyone speaks it to you and you have no choice but to speak it back, that way you can have constant and active practice.

But I don't have any news channel from the Philippines. =(

You can do it! Key words include "ABS-CBN", "GMA News", and "streaming".

For literacy, you can also try to find someone to message or chat with, but good luck with that-- we are incredibly fond of text-speak. It's shameful, really.

I actually wrote to ABS-CBN about a box to watch tv here but they didn't reply. I guess I can search Google for streams.

Also, my mother is Filipino and my girl as well, so I got some to talk Tagalog to, and a lot of cousins in chat.

But my mind totally blanks out whenever somebody speaks Tagalog to me and I get frustrated that I can't understand what is being said to me. =/

Does anyone know how malungay flower is when slow cooked? I'm wondering mostly about flavor; i assume the texture will be creamy mush. I've only eaten raw.

Haha same with me, I can understand it but its soooo hard to speak in Filipino. My nieces have the same problem. My older brother who is a year older though can speak it no problem.

uhm, we don't really call people here pinoy or pinay. It's actually pretty weird if you call someone that lol just call them by their names or if you're just going to ask questions such as directions, call an older woman, "ate" (pronounced as "ah-teh". it means older sister) and for an older man, "sir"/"boss"(because that means we respect them). Or you know, you can just call their attention by saying "excuse me" that'll avoid the trouble lol

if the woman is younger than you, call them "miss". if the man is younger, you can also call them "boss"

If the person's a relative of a friend, call them "tito"if they're older than you (it means uncle) or "tita"(it means aunt)
If the relative is younger, you can call them by their names

Baguio isn't what it used to be. Instead of pine trees on the hills you see rooftops :(

Is it still worth vacationing over there? Like is there any place that you gotta visit and activities that you gotta do when you're over there?

I've always wanted to visit Baguio as kid mainly because it's apparently cold over there. I've now moved to the US and looking at the temp average chart on Wikipedia... haha that's not even cold at all. I can wear a pair of flip-flops, shorts and a t-shirt when it's around 10C over here in Texas and that's barely cold.

I kinda do miss the tropical weather though.

There's still some tourist traps there - pony rides, see some Igorots wearing shades, and you can pose with a St. Bernard for a little donation.

I always have a hard time figuring out, if I should call people tita or ate. So if I think the woman looks old, I'm calling her tita, and if she looks young I'll call her ate haha. I remember a time, when I called my 5 year younger cousin, ate. :D

Really? :(

I gotta go there again next time.

Holy cow, thank god for the bump. I didnt even know we have this till now. Subbed hehe.

Anyway I'm originally from meycauayan, bulacan. Moved here to houston almost 6 years ago. So yeah. Im still as pinoy as you can get with a bit of tagalog accent and everything hehe. Yall want to game online just check my profile. I game on ps3, ps4 soonish lol.

And visit the NBA OT on the community side if you got the time. :)

i miss pinas summer. It can be as uncomfortable as fuck if in a city but boy its the best kind of weather when youre chillin near a beach in the morning, afternoon or night. Not sure i can still handle summer noons outside though lol.

There's still some tourist traps there -

Not really a fan of tourist traps... I prefer getting into the real stuff, like sitting outside the carinderia eating isaw or sisig and drinking some Red Horse lol. I mean sometimes they're fun and interesting to visit, but for the most part I find them a little boring.

You're in Houston! How can you miss the PH summer? It's practically the same!

I was there last October for Jollibee(of course) and it felt a like the PH tbh... wet and humid. We rarely get that kind of weather up here in Dallas, and if we do, it usually comes with hail or tornadoes. -___-

Pure-blooded Filipino (Filipina?) here, but I currently live in Japan. I was born and raised in Pampanga. Yup, food there is gooooooood. I had no idea how good the food I ate daily was until I left for university. The cooks from Pampanga are just extraordinary.

Btw, my Japanese hubby is crazy about Jollibee. He doesn't care about the fancy restaurants and such - the moment he lands, we have to head for the nearest Jollibee XD

Hell nawww. lol. I can play outside our house during the height of pinas summers.. In Houston, I feel like I'm about to collapse just walking to my cars parking spot. It just feels different. My dad describes it as Houston summers on its peak feels like Saudi Arabia at noon (he's worked there for years) w/c I could only imagine is a crap ton hotter than pinas summer hehe.

Speaking of Jollibee, I think that is where I'm gonna treat my family once i'm done with all my school stuff. Been quite a WHILE since the family ate at a Jollibee together. Peach mango pie and chicken joy here I come.

Most Philippine fast food joints (especially KFC, but also Jollibee and McDonald's to a lesser extent) went down in quality compared to about 10 years ago. KFC has tiny chicken pieces, with really bland gravy. Used to be so thick and tasty before. I guess this is what happens when you try to cater to the masa and maximize profits at the same time.

The same as my friend there. I normally send pictures of Chicken Joy to them every now and then.

Pampanga food is nice. I think Mangan should be a quick fix for you when in the Metro.

totally the same here. As soon as we land I also go for Jollibee. It's the best.

2 PC Burger Steak!!

Dude, it's 38ish here. And it feels like you are in a dry sauna room. I love you Sabado, pati na din Linggo....

Have you seen the sizes of the chicken lately at KFC? They are getting smaller. Chickenjoy is now being served as smaller breast parts, sometimes the half of what they used to offer. Mcdonalds is pure flour, breading hehehe..

Wendy's over here still has good burgers, but the problem is their prices are pretty close to more upscale chains like TGI Friday's or Chilis.

I don't find Jollibee anything special. I prefer the Army Navy burgers or just MacDonalds.

Mang Inasal on the other hand... At one point I was dining there like 4-5 times a week lol. Unlimited rice yeah!

Wendy's is expensive. I'd rather go to those specialty burger houses where it's really bigger, tastier, and thicker. I really love their overpriced iced tea though.

Mang Inasal... I thought their chicken shrank?

Still seems the same which is surprising since Jollibee owns 70% of the business. In addition to owning Chowking, Greenwich, Red Ribbon and Cafe France they also control at least 30% of Burger King here.

Texas heat ain't that bad, at least up here in DFW lol. I work outside during the summer when it's around 100F and it's hell but it's pretty tolerable. Or maybe I just developed a tolerance for it.

Are there any other Filipino spots in Houston that you gotta go to when you're down there? My fam is planning a trip down there sometime this summer. We've got NASA, Jollibee and maybe Galveston on the list so far.

Speaking of school, you go to UH by any chance?

This is one of the funniest things I've ever seen when I visited a couple of years ago. Chili's was created here in Dallas and while it's a local thing, we've never considered it as an upscale chain. So when a family friend suggested we go to a Chili's in Makati because it's where the rich people hang out, I almost died laughing.

Chili's here in the US ain't bad, but it's definitely the not the place where rich people hang out. It's more like the place where every bar and restaurant is packed and you either go home or go to a chain like Chili's.

Any pinoy living in Australia, and hanging out here in neogaf???

Sydney to be exact. We're still waiting for Jollibee to be locally available here. Though I heard that Jollibee's terms for prospective franchisee is a bit dodgy, that's why no one is doing it here.

yeah here in this country mundane Western chains like Marks & Spencer are considered fancy.
