Finally don't have to worry about spoilers. I thought that final scene was great. I was annoyed by how they had designed the monster, but the ending changed everything and placed Victor in a new light. Proteus never was "the monster". It made Victor seem more tragic. He finally succeeded, learned from his mistakes. Gave his creation a name, didn't run away, taught it. All things he didn't do with his original creature. It made his emotions in that first episode more sympathetic

Which in a way makes Victor a more unlikeable character. Because it means he just abandoned his "Firstborn" and just created another being instead

I saw a print ad for this and was immediately interested. I am so, so down with Victorian era supernatural fiction. If the first two episodes are any indication this show is everything the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen movie should have been and more. The cinematography is delicious and the cast is so completely right. Eva Green is a goddess.

Penny Dreadful is going to make the wait for Hannibal season 3 bearable. I found myself a great new show at just the right time. Hell yes.

How many eps is this going to be? 10? 12/13?

Show is great, it honestly feels like everything American Horror Story wishes it was. I actually found myself wondering why we don't have more horror series during this episode.

I love Billie Piper, but that accent was just fucking awful. One point towards the end of the episode I was just baffled because I couldn't understand anything she said for a moment.

Seance scene was crazy as hell. Almost made me want to grab some holy water. Dorian Gray was an interesting addition as well. As long as the story doesn't get too bogged down where we get caught up in the supernatural aspect with no progression or action taking place, the show will do fine.

Great episode, even better than the first one. The seance scene was crazy, and i'm sad about poor Proteus. Although, i don't see why Dr. Frankenstein wouldn't be able to bring him back to life again?

And Josh's storyline is a snoozefest so far, i hope they don't focus on it too much.

So glad i watched this. Eva Green gave a batshit crazy awesome performance in Camelot as Morgan, but i think that seance scene easily topped anything she did in that show. Thankfully, unlike Camelot, the actual show around her is entertaining to watch.

Eva Green is gotdamn nuts. I will watch anything she does in hopes of crazy eyes and holy jumpinjack jesus did she deliver in episode 2.

This show has already delivered what it was created to do. S'all downhill from here.

Ok I have to ask a question but I'm afraid to.

Oh what the hell here it goes:

Was I the only one turned on every time Eva Green said the words "fuck" and "cunt?"

First episode was good, better than I expected for a pilot. Episode 2 stunned me, and that was mainly Eva Green's performance. She's perfect for the role

I wonder if that whole seance was scripted down to every gesture or they put on some creepy lights and told Eva Green to just go with it.

I was wondering if Proteus was actually just a reanimated corpse. The scars all look like they could have came from an autopsy, where as Adam was pieced together from the remains of many bodies.

Perhaps Victor believed not ever having been a whole person, nor having a soul might have been why his first creations was so horrible. But he was still driven to find the great truth of control over life and death.

The way Proteus was slowly remembering who he was seems to support he was a single person, and Victor's joy at his growing memory and apparent gentleness.

The seance scene went on too long. I didn't like it.

I get not liking the show..Gothic horror is a genre thats inherently melodramatic and has a pacing thats not everyone's taste.
but I can't see how anyone couldn't enjoy that scene for its intensity that Eve brought, she so sold it, and then Timothy's stoicism faltering, real pain showing thru..but very subtlety..it was a brilliant scene.

The seance scene was a great example of good acting, but the small pause midways exacerbated its lenght, which was considerable. It should have been a good 20% shorter for maximum effect, IMO.

It was still amazing.

that scene was really good but my favorites were with frankenstein and proteus.

when that dude ripped him up though...god damn that came out of nowhere. so is he the frankenstein's monster?

It looks like. His eyes threw me off guard, though. Were they lit in a dim shade of red?

Alas, poor Proteus. I loved his gentle character and his sweetness towards Frankenstein. He seemed like good people, which is usually the mark of death in horror shows :(

I second this. It was amazing at first, but then after the small pause and the way it keeps on going, it kinda killed the tension for me. Still great, but just a little too long.

Cause he's an evil prick.

I miss you Mr Proteus :(

Actually I'm not sure I'd call him evil. His anger and rage is pretty justified, especially if they're going with the book version. In the book, Victor pretty much treated it the exact opposite way he treated Proteus. He made an ugly creature that was a patchwork of various parts, never gave it a name, fled from the monster in fear and cast it out into a world that it didn't understand and that feared it, promised to make a female companion and destroyed that female creation as the monster watched. And then in Penny Dreadful, Victor made a better creation that he cared about and treated well

So yeah, with all that in mind, I'd say that the Firstborn isn't evil. Vengeful and angry, but rightly so, given Victor's actions

Just saw it and wow. First half I was losing attention but wow Eva Green was insanely awesome. I've loved her in anything I've seen and she went all out. I still have no idea what was going on with the second part with the daughter, sex, something?

The twist with Proteus and the monster was sad but shocking.

Eva Green is a really special actress. She always elevates whatever she's in and even if the show/movie is shit (Camelot, 300-2) she always brings something great to the table.

Both eps were great. Love the hell out of this show so far. The seance wasn't too long at all and Pipers accent didn't bother me at all (I understood everything she said).

So, the show is pretty much perfect to me at this point.

Just wached the first two episodes. I liked it, but am not quite sold yet. But Eva Green is doing her best to keep me hooked in the meantime.

Generally, I just love the era and the look of the show. A Hammer-Horror monster mash-up

Shame about Proteus, but that was really well done. Especially how they made you care about him in such a short amount of time.

I did not quite get all the implications of the seance. So Eva Green is possessed by an Egyptian God(dess) and if the devil gets his hands on her it will be the end of the world. Right?

Also, Mina is Sir Dalton's daughter, correct? She (and/or someone named Vanessa) saw him have sex. I assume Mina was taken by Dracula at some point.

Any thoughts?

I unspoilered your post since it's aired now.

@ the bolded. When the egyptologist was talking about the gods I think he was describing Eva's character and, unbeknownst to him, Dorian Gray. He sold his soul to the devil for perpetual youth did he not? He described the other god as having perpetual life by shedding his skin like a snake.

So they already set up the attraction between them but if they actually get together something very bad will happen. That's how I interpreted it anyway.

What's curious about this, is the American actor guy (I forget his name) drew the Tarot card The Lovers...was it talking about him and Eva Green, or him and Billie "I suck at Irish Accents" Piper?

Ah right I forgot about that. And yeah, I couldn't understand half of what she was saying. Although everyone in the show seems to speak in a bit of mumble, but she was the worst.

The show is fantastic though.

Wow at OG Monster. The scenes between Victor and Proteus were very human. Kind of amazing how they make you care enough for them in two episodes to be legit upset at his death.

Understanding her wasn't hard at all. Though I guess season after season of Kelly from Misfits gives you the super power of understanding all kinds of weird accents.

I want this to be one of those shows that sticks around for awhile. I really like it and 8 episodes it merely a taste of goodness.
