Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 7: How Can My Smash Brother Be This Cut

The poll for the next thread title is now live!!! To get the link to the poll, just quote this post to reveal it. Remember: If you don't vote and he next thread title ends up sucking, then it's your fault (unless IntelliHeath doesn't go with the winning title, then it's his fault).

shoulda been called "The Way of the Sakurai" and shoulda had "We all Shulking in the corner" but since neither is here i'll just go with
hyping on a prayer

I totally agree, bowsers run was probably the worst run animation in the game. Followed by the always hilarious Brawl Ganondorf run.

I think they were going for a "koopa shell sliding" type thing but it always looked ridiculously stupid. Bowser looks really good this time around.

I got bored and decided to do a "How much I want a stage to return" for each stage returning to smash 4, and what system I think they should be on.

Starting with smash 64:

Congo Jungle
250px-CongoJungle.png
Number of smash bros appearances: 2
Desire for return: 40%
System: Wii U
Reasoning: I'd make it higher, since this was brought back in melee, but 3DS already has a DK retro stage, so I doubt they'd have this one too. To bring this back, it would basically need a full remake for Wii U, so I say its chances are low.

Dream Land
Number of smash bros appearances: 2
Desire for return: 70%
System: 3DS
Reasoning: Basically, it's the original battlefield. Simple in design, would work great on 3DS. They would have to modify it to get rid of the flying dedede in the back, or at least replace him with alfonzo.

Hyrule Castle
Number of smash bros appearances: 1
Desire for return: 90%
System: 3DS or Wii U
Reasoning: It has never made a return, but I think it's a solid stage, especially if Temple is killed off. It fits perfectly fine on either Wii U or 3DS, but would obviously take a lot more work to adapt to Wii U. I think this is a fan favorite, so it would be nice if it made it back.

Mushroom Kingdom
Number of smash bros appearances: 1
Desire for return: 30%
System: 3DS
Reasoning: Would be nice to have a retro Mario stage, especially if they implement the wrap-around from balloon fight, but i don't think many people have fond memories of the stage. We also already have a POW block item, which was one of the main gimmicks of the stage.

Peach's Castle
Number of smash bros appearances: 1
Desire for return: 10%
System: 3DS
Reasoning: It's a pretty dull stage, probably my least favorite in the original smash. It's almost like a debug stage that they made into a real one. It's so random and doesn't really 'feel' like a mario stage. It's like they threw in the peach's castle art asset in the background and called it a day. With the current way that sakurai seems to love being true to each series, I don't see this one really coming back.

Planet Zebes
Number of smash bros appearances: 1
Desire for return: 80%
System: 3DS
Reasoning: This is probably my favorite Metroid stage ever made (outside of possibly pyrosphere. The melee ones were no fun, to me, and the gimmicks/hazards from the brawl ones were too powerful (Full screen lava waves, complete stage flips!). This is simple in design, can have an updated background, and work really well. A final destination version would be really nice, too.

Sector Z
Number of smash bros appearances: 1
Desire for return: 100%
System: 3DS or Wii U
Reasoning: Just like corneria, but in outer space. It would be nice to get this version back, rather than the one from melee/brawl. This is one of my favorite stage designs, and i'm glad it's been in every smash bros so far, but it'd be a cool throwback to have THIS version over the melee/brawl version.

Saffron City
Number of smash bros appearances: 1
Desire for return: 75%
System: 3DS
Reasoning: I'd love the 3DS to get this over an old/new pokemon stadium. It's a good way to showcase some pokemon (coming out of the door), and I think people really enjoyed this stage.

Yoshi's Island
Number of smash bros appearances: 2
Desire for return: 85%
System: Wii U or 3DS
Reasoning: I think this was beloved by many in melee, and it's a good alternative to battlefield, with the slanted platforms. The level looks great, and it's basically the only nod we have to 'Yoshi's Story.' I'd love for this to come back on any platform.

Gotta say, my favorites are "A Song of Fire and Ice Climbers", "Diplomacy has Failed", and the one I voted for: "Don't cut him. You can't cut him." Miiverse paroies make the best thread titles.

I like today's update. Mirroring characters' stances is a nice touch, and I can only imagine it was a huge pain to get working for so many characters. It's one thing to mirror an idle pose, but considering how many attack poses come off of the idle and are directly affected by it...

Also it's nice to see red!Greninja since Brawl's Pokemon color swaps were pretty terrible all around.

Which crushing trophy/AT reveal do you guys think we'll get this week?

Isaac? (Probably not because he's a hidden AT)
Lucina?
Dixie Kong? K. Rool?

I'm not a fan of the mirrored models at all, but there's no point in complaining about it.

Clearly unpopular opinion, but I actually think it's a nice touch since it's mirrored animations, not models. In their own games you rarely see Mario, Luigi, Kirby from the back and then for characters like Greninja who have a defining pose, you'd barely be able to see it if they just stood backwards.

Bowser's a weird one, though. You see him from all angles fairly often.

I think it is more that people who don't like it are louder and most people are indifferent towards the change.

Personally, the more I get to see of Bowser's new stance, the better lol.

I want a pac man trophy to deconfirm him as playable. I don't want a chorus men trophy, because I really like the idea of them being playable.
Yeah, I was just kidding haha

Anyway, I like how the color changes are just as vibrant as the originals. A lot of brawls color swaps were dull and awful

I actually agree. Especially when you consider that if you're using Greninja in a Pokemon game aren't you looking at his back? And maybe the back of Bowser's model is super dope?
At least my boy Mac seems to have avoided this.

I'd pay money to have scarf link

Real money, nintendo.

That's the best Link's looked in years. Poor guy's been getting progressively uglier since OoT. That scarf looks so good, too.

It is kind of disappointing that we won't be able to see half the characters' backs, especially Bowser's. As silly as his animations were in Brawl, his shell looked great. But, as someone else pointed out, mirrored models is probably best for a small screen like the 3DS's. Besides, once we're actually playing it, we probably won't even notice.

I'll laugh really hard if Star Fox gets a fourth rep

Cool Picture of the day. I noticed this about megaman back at E3 last year. His buster arm changes depending on which direction he's facing. It's a really neat detail that matches up with his original sprite.

Watch the developer direct and pay attention to his buster arm. It's neat to watch it transform as he changes directions. It has an animation and everything. The attention to detail in this game is insane.

What I like is that they establish Megaman has both blasters on both sides too.

I'm fine with Mega Man's model being mirrored, since it actually fits his retro, robotic aesthetic, but it doesn't really make sense for the rest of the characters. Mario's AAA combo is taken from Super Mario 64, for example, but now he'll use the "wrong" limbs when facing the left side of the screen. That kind of stuff probably doesn't bother most of you, but those homages are what I like most about Smash Bros., and this change cheapens some of them. I had the same problem with Marvel vs. Capcom 3.
Although I absolutely LOVE Bowser's new stance, I gotta admit I still haven't gotten used to it. Every time I see him standing upright it slightly blows my mind a little. But I will say its been needed for quite some time...never understood why he was hunched over in the last games and more importantly why his run animation was so lazily done.
You don't like his run? I actually found the "Bowsermobile" to be my favorite run in the game.

Even acknowledged in the trailer/developer direct w/ the up smash/down smash :) So good, so good sakurai, you hear me!? GOOD JOB KEEP IT UP! God!

What we really need to do is stitch all the rejected newcomers together to make one character.

This way everyone is playable.

If Smash was a 2D sprite-based game that wouldn't be a bad idea. Pluck some shapeshifting character from a Nintendo franchise and have them turn into random characters not in the roster for certain moves. Double from Skullgirls does a little bit of that.

Of course, in 3D this would be way too much effort.

Oh man, more famitsu scans are out for hyrule warriors. New and improved Impa is so good. Uses a greatsword and everything. Now I want her in smash even more. So fantastic. Also looks like she has weird blue magic or possibly water powers. So goooood.

Voted for "It's not ogre until it's ridley"

Combining two memes is always a good idea.

She only uses other characters in her level 3 blockbuster. :P

Wasn't that your idea?

Ohhh, that's who I meant to add to this week's Trophy reveal. Impa!

I think after all the hyrule warriors stuff, Impa became my number 1 character that hasn't been announced yet. Now I know how the ridley people feel.
