Here's a quick snap of my S15 Silvia, it was taken over the weekend at my importer...

I still can't believe the wait is almost over...

with the aero kit! i love it

Aaaargh stupid phone. I just saw the ghost of Paul Walker driving down the Ventura Freeway towards downtown LA in a silver R-34 Skyline GT-R but I couldn't take a picture because apparently this phone can't play a podcast over Bluetooth, give turn by turn GPS navigation and directions over Bluetooth, and shoot video all at the same time. So the camera app would load but every time I tried to actually take a picture or start video rolling the app crashed. Then I almost crashed. Dammit.

Don't get me started on bluetooth in cars... My Nexus 4 (probably Podcast app) misbehaves all the time. It really likes to freeze, big time, when it starts the podcast. Last time at work it froze four times which has never happened with my bluetooth headset.
When I do get it working it usually starts the wrong player, usually loud music. It liked Poweramp so much it started playing audio from it when my trial had ran out. Very strange situation where I couldn't open Poweramp to close it :P

It was quite refreshing when I had to drive an older car with only a CD player where all I had to do was swap discs every hour, but I can't afford to put podcasts on them. Still the only method that works seamlessly every time and the car keeps track of where I was.

Question for you guys:

I've never actually bought a car via craigslist or even contacted anyone via craigslist about looking at a car.

I'm looking at cars for my girlfriend right now, and we want to contact someone about their listing.

My plan is to ask them if we can see it sometime in the next few days, and offer to drive to their home to check it out. I also want to ask them if they're ok with me test driving it / taking it to my mechanic for a general inspection. My mechanic is probably 35~ miles away from where they live, so I don't know if they would want to put up with driving there with me, waiting, and driving back, or if they would be ok with me taking the car over there.

I was going to propose leaving copies of our driver's licenses and insurance info as a gesture of good will, and at this point realized that I had no idea what I was doing and decided to ask AutoGAF.

So, I want to see a car, I want to have it inspected/test drive it.

Should I propose to meet at the seller's home? Should I propose to leave copies of ID, etc. with them, or am I totally off the mark?

Any advice?

Don't give shit to a stranger off of CraigsList that you aren't likely to buy a car from. Ever.

Ask him to meet you at the shop, test drive it nearby there, then have the mechanic inspect it.

Don't give anything until you are actually going to buy the car. You'll be filling out the DMV forms with your address on there anyways.

Also, if that person refuses to have the car get a pre-purchase inspection, then he/she is hiding something. Walk away.

Everyone on Craigslist is a murdering raper.

Thanks guys. I had already decided that no-inspection = no-dice, but I started feeling like I was offering way too much upfront.

In return, promised pics from Cars & Coffee:

Hopefully one of you can help me out.

I have a 2005 Toyota Solara. Randomly, when I turn the key to crank the engine, everything goes out, as if the battery has died. Dashboard goes out, clock gets reset, all that. Then, if I want a few minutes the battery will be good again, I go to crank the engine, same thing happens. Wait a few minutes, and eventually it'll start with no trouble.

Do you have any idea what this could be? Battery is good, no issue with the starter once it cranks over, no issue actually turning the key. I'm kinda panicked because I'm starting a new job soon and I really can't afford to be late at all during training and I have no money to get it fixed and I need to know if this is something I could put off for a few weeks to get fixed.

If the clock resets as well, maybe it is a loose connection at the battery terminals? See if you can wiggle the battery cables a bit and have the car start immediately?

Yep, sounds like the battery is shorting out. The current for starting the engine is the most the battery sees, so if there's a bad connection it will short out completely. Take a good look at the battery terminals and the grounding point for the battery (should be a short cable from one of the battery terminals to the frame of the car) and make sure that they're all tight and clean.

Will do.

I mean, it is literally random. There is nothing that actually sets anything off. It's like cranking the engine causes the battery to be disconnected. It's rather odd.

Thanks for the feedback.

I'd say Mercedes did pretty good with the new C-class overall. Overall I like what they've done with the interior and if I hadn't bought 3-series touring just recently and had to choose between the two, I might go MB.

One thing I noticed is that there seems to be two different variants of headlights. One has the swooping accent on top and the other under the lens. I wonder if that's dependant on the spec kinda like how the Mercedes star is on the grille depending which you choose.

this one has the optional full LED light while the one above is the standard one I think. I really like the new C-Class, they've done an excellent job with it.

Of the two front versions I prefer this one. If I'm buying a Mercedes it better have a star on the bonnet. Thankfully those MB UK idiots have decided to import both versions of the C-Class. On the E-Class you only get the star on the grill smh.

So basically you're gonna get rid of your FR-S for a more expensive, factory riced version? Good luck with that. How about just buying a better car instead?

His got hit, and he might think about getting a replacement with insurance money. Liking a specific car that isn't a BMW is apparently a damnable offense here?

No. It's just financially an odd choice...and we're allowed to be critical of a car aren't we?

Not like we're berating the guy personally, simple calling the car selection questionable because it's basically a stock FRS with a body kit. It looks fast, but it's not...it's the very definition of those kids who watch too many Fast and Furious movies and add tacky body kits to their slow Civics and such. It's a giant, colossal waste of money and these car manufacturers are getting away with it by catering to a certain demographic of people. Why perpetuate the whole thing?

Just my opinion.

The 1.0 maybe costs a few thousand more than an FR-S, it's under $30,000. If he just wanted the body kit and a paint job, he would have spent more.

Hopefully his current FR-S will be OK, but still the FR-S 1.0 isn't some ridiculous expenditure.

Also, there are cars sold with different exterior trims all the time. The FR-S is a sporty car, it's going to have a sporty looking kit on that trim. Hell, my favorite car, the 240ZG was a specific trim of exterior modifications. I couldn't find someone who would say I shouldn't like a G-nose Z because it had factory exterior mods that didn't make it any faster.

Not everything needs to be a muscle car. I'd rather have a BRZ version of that than a 370Z, as crazy as it sounds. Not that red and white fairlady though.

It's the Beats Headphones of cars.

I'm also of the opinion that making aesthetic trim levels of a supposed performance vehicle is an oxymoron.

I took a ban for Jezza, but I'll be the first to admit that he's a hyperbolic moron much of the time. His opinion is far, far from any sort of objective truth.

Never has an analogy been more appropriate or accurate.

And yeah, Clarkson's the last person in the world who I'd even take seriously regarding COTY. He hated the 350Z but he, along with the other Top Gear crew awarded it COTY back in 2003. His sole purpose is to be a comedian, a Jalopnik journo for the masses, if you will. Others have given the car a ton of praise and awards as well, but ultimately the market dictated all of that praise was probably all for naught. Sales of the cars is rather poor, especially considering the blistering sales of the Mustang, Camaro, and the far more expensive Corvette.

My friend who races formula fords, can-am cars and historic race events says that he likes his FR-S more than most of every car he has ever owned. Most fun he has had within the speed limit.

I don't think you want a Turbo on the FR-S because it could retard the responsiveness unless you put int something like a low spooling bi-turbo.

A Turbo FR-S is an awesome, awesome thing.

I don't think you'll see many here argue that it isn't fun to push a "weaker" car to its limits because those limits are much easier to reach than in a 458 Italia on a regular street, but buying a pampered up FR-S when the base price is already crossing into sketchy territory seems like a waste of money in exchange for ghetto parking lot brownie points.

He doesn't think its a weak platform, the chassis can handle more but he likens it to his old Lotus Super 7- skinny tyres, high revs, light weight = crazy delicious.

He also, like Alpha, lusts for the Jag F-type but would prefer a coupe.

While I do see a point here about the FR-S 1.0, I disagree with calling the FR-S the Beats of cars (of course I would, I bought one). At $25k new, all the cars compromise on one thing or the other. The FR-S compromises on torque.

PS: Well, we are at least living up to the thread title.

Buying a car that has an aero trim because you like the way it looks (on top of the fact that the FR-S is a fun to drive car) is a negative? It's stupid to pay to have a car that looks the way you like it to?

Why wear clothes with color when taupe cloth will cover your body just the same and be cheaper?

There's a difference between picking out what suit color to buy, and what shade of khaki cargo pants to buy.

I'm also an aesthetics whore, but I value function just as much as I value form. In this particular instance, I would personally spend that extra money on performance than looks, which is I guess a compliment to the base FR-S. I also never said it was stupid. If someone wants to spend cash on whatever, more power to them, but that won't make me magically agree with their decision.

I don't think I've ever outright hated on the FR-S, and my beats comments was primarily directed towards the "1.0" trim.

They have supercharger kits for it that make it quite nice, from my understanding.

To be fair, that's pretty slow.

Am I doing it right?

I may have mentioned this many pages back, but that 1.0 kit simply looks too good...for such a slow car. My brain is just wired that way. I see pretty, and I'm hoping it has the umph to back it up.

It's like those Ferrari kit cars that are based on Fieros. Some of them look damn near perfect, but they go like shit. It's just upsetting to have something pretty looking, be so slow.

But they're so fun to drive! It's not all about being slammed back into your seat.

The Mustang being a much more favored car in this community, is something that I would never consider buying. Ever. Ever ever. It just doesn't feel as nice.

Gotta understand subjectivity bruh. This isn't like comparing benchmarks for video cards or something. It's not even like comparing headphones, such as the Beats example above. Beats just flat out suck, are overpriced, and are turned for shitty compressed music.

The BRZ/FR-S/GT86 has some objectively better aspects to it than a lot of the competition. If those things are subjectively more important to someone, then it's a damn fine automobile.

I drove both GT86 variants when they came out...there was nothing fun about them. It was about the most boring sports car experience I've had in a very long time.

How much power does a car need to have to be fun? What's the least amount of power you've had fun with in a car?
