Gamespot rumor: Big third-party Xbox One exclusive at E3

So that's why Zampella was upset when he (the developer) learned that the game signed an exclusivity deal right?

This game was being developed before the full exclusivity deal even took place, even hits at PS3 code in there as well.

The loss? The opportunity cost of not releasing on PS3/PS4, so double the last-gen consoles and triple the current-gen consoles (~2:1 PS4:Xbox One).

From what I understand, when they accepted the money the agreement was for 13-months exclusivity. MS would not fund a game to let it launch on another platform at the same time. To think that is just plain dumb.

Of course he would be upset that they never got to release it elsewhere, but do you really think Titanfall would do gangbusters if released in April 2015 on PS3/PS4? Look at the 2015 lineup, does Titanfall really have a chance?

!!!!!!!! hahaha

I am expecting that everyone will have a big third-party exclusive to reveal. I would be worried for a company that did not have this going on.

I hope it actually is XBOX ONE exclusive, and not just Microsoft (PC/XB1/X360) exclusive.

The XB1 needs more "ONLY ON THE XBOX ONE" games. They need those games more than anything else at this point.

MS historically doesn't pay money to keep games off of the PC platform since it doesn't generally cut into console sales numbers enough.

You're completely ignoring the business elements related to IP ownership. So it costs them 1M sales on PS4 with 2077 and MS cuts them a check for $25M. Great. So now what do they do with the sequel when the Xbox One has a 20M user base, the PS4 has a 100M user base, and they're launching against a Playstation "loyal" RPG franchise like the second RPG from Guerrilla Games (since it and 2077 probably have a pretty similar release date)? Even if they're day and date on both consoles then they've attached a stigma to their brand. Hence why even though FFXIII came out at a time when the Xbox 360 was the clear market leader in the U.S. it still sold better on the PS3.

Franchises and brands become affiliated with other franchises and brands when they make exclusive partnerships. That often has a positive effect, but sometimes it can also be damaging. I think EA and Respawn are just finding that out now with Titanfall. They bet on the Xbox One being the clear winner and that isn't happening. Now the IP they locked in to that platform is going to be competing with Destiny or it's sequel in a few years with less brand recognition on the dominant platform, let willingness by the first party to help them advertise through their marketplace, some low level dismissive leanings from the core audience of that platform (because fanboys gonna fanboy), etc.. They've handicapped their new IP out of the gate because they bet on the wrong horse and that is likely going to follow their IP for the rest of this generation. It will never be the next CoD now because of that choice and are now just hoping and praying that Destiny doesn't pick up where CoD left off now that the later is going into the early stages of sales decline.
I didn't ignore it at all, that's what "franchise erosion in that audience" means.
From's not making that? *has tazer-esque seizure*
Weird! Thanks bud
They're not publishing it.

Except that Dragon's Dogma significantly better in Japan, where an Xbox exclusive equates to lighting money on fire, and on the Playstation 3, because it's audience was more aligned with that kind of game. Since then the shift in audience hasn't been PS3 users moving to XB1 but instead X360 users moving to PS4.

Do not question Capcom stupidity.
They have done this before, look at Monster hunter. Audience on PS, release on Nintendo, they even release Monster Hunter F for 360, excluding PS until recently.
They don't care what platform are their audience aligned, only money.

I'm gonna totally guess that it's gonna be Mass Effect 4 or Resident Evil 7

I don't think it will be a super established franchise like Mass Effect. Resident Evil 7 might make sense as it doesn't have the sales potential. Anyone who releases are third party exclusive knows subsequent game sales will suffer when/if they decide to release on the other platform.

Throw my hat in for Shenmue 3

That would be hilarious.

Mostly because I don't care and generally consider the Shenmue series to be horrible, but I just don't think the amount of development money you'd need to put into a Shenmue game to make it worthwhile would pay off with the small vocal minority that want a new Shenmue.

It's like me wanting a new Freedom Fighters.

I believe they should be scouting third party publishers to create new IP's for them. Like Remedy is doing and Insomniac is doing. Forget about trying to get titles like Fallout 4, they already have a fanbase on various platforms so why piss them off by exclusion deals?

The other thing is both Nintendo and Sony have handhelds they can play off of. Microsoft has been vocal they want to get back into PC gaming more which means we could see Windows exclusive deals being made. Whatever they do just drop the XBox 360 support for goodness sakes.

The idea of it being Shenmue 3 is hilarious.

If MS announces it... then what? We wait until 2017/2018?

Unless Yu Suzuki was lying, as of March, Shenmue 3 had nothing to it but a script and a name. EVERYTHING will have to built from scratch, and Japanese developers don't have the most efficient dev cycles, even more so for an open-world game.

It's more realistic for MS to announce its 2016 titles.

Seems like a lot lost sales and profits, even if MS pays for development.

Ehhh not really as the game is only kinda sorta big in JP and with MS muscle behind it can become a big thing in the west, the potential is there, I'm not saying DD2 is the title in question, just not agreeing in that Capcom would be stupid to go that way.

Fallout 4, I think it was rumored at last E3 that Journos (pretty sure Angry Joe mentioned it) where shown the game behind closed doors at an event and had to sign NDA's before the public announcement.

I predict it will be an Xbox One exclusive. no PS4 or PC version of it.

Capcom is desperate for money anywhere they can get it. If MS offers to fully fund RE7 or Dragons Dogma 2 in exchange for 6 months of exclusivity they will take it in a heartbeat.

Mass Effect 4 can have the same sort of deal that happened with ME2. ME4 can come out on PC, XB1, and 360 initially and we can have excuses like: "we wanted to return to our Xbox roots and focus on 3 platforms" "using the power of the cloud..." "Kinect integration" "Smartglass to command your ship" in order to justify it being a timed exclusive.

EDIT: Its pretty funny people are using Shenmue 3 as a "big 3rd party exclusive" when Shenmue 2 didn't really help the original Xbox or even the Dreamcast.

The backlash over that would be incredible. There are a ton of Fallout fans who won't buy an Xbox One.

I would think it would be a lapsed franchise that needs a platform holder to fund, that's why Shenmue makes some sense, however after Ryse I really think it could be Timesplitters.

Would love to see that franchise return.

I think MS will pull out the stops and announce titles for years beyond, into 2020. It would definitively put an end to the list wars.

Why announce date, just say the title, exclusive on xbox one, coming first on xbox one and done with it.

I can see a lot of old IP get revive with this treatment.

That's not even close to the same thing, though. They moved Monster Hunter from the less popular platform to the more popular one. If the hardware had allowed it, MH would have been on DS immediately and 3DS was their chance to move it.

Making an Xbox One exclusive is saying "No, I don't want Japanese sales at all, thanks for asking." It would literally not be worth the cost of printing the discs or paying for a Cero submission.

That rumor was likely false. I think even Jason from Kotaku said as much, unless Kotaku of all places didn't get the invite. Also wouldn't make sense at all to show a group of people a secret game a year before they even announce it. They would be just begging for it to leak. And what point would it even serve?

There is no way in my mind that Bethesda will not release FO4 on the PS4. Way more money at this point to be had from Sony and what is the payoff for Microsoft? Will that many more people buy an Xbox One for that game to equal out the very high exclusive cost? Personally, I think it would just tick me and others off. Timed exclusive? Don't like it but sure, it could happen.
