Gamespot rumor: Big third-party Xbox One exclusive at E3

I dont understand the point of these timed exclusives as it is not going to improve the xbox one's library compared to the competition and it just angers people. First PVZ, Then news of Titanfall sequel and now this game is also going to end up on PS4?

What is the point for MS to do this? They should either buy the franchise outright or just let it be multiplat from the get go. Doing this does not improve their library in any way.

Source 2 is reportedly OpenGL only, Valve are about to declare war on MS, they are not going to give them an exclusive game.

I also heard that Source 2 will only run on Steam OS...

Until Valve states that its products are not compatible with Windows, I can't imagine they will ever truly be at war.

Who said it was a timed exclusive?

The wording is just Gamespot incompetence.

Of course they mean an exclusive game, who the hell cares about an exclusive reveal? That's not newsworthy.

Companies do care about exclusive reveals....hence the MGS stuff at the XBox presser last year.

Also this great tweet came out of it:

That I certainly don't believe.

Companies maybe, but I don't think gamers do, and that tweet was just a lie, it didn't make the exclusive reveal more of a thing.

Although it also wasn't the reveal, the game was announced at GDC.

Some folks just aren't patient if they have to wait a whole year. I think the timed strategy worked pretty well for PVZ...Made a nice profit for Xbone and now PS4 and PC folks can join in.

The reason I have a problem with this is that there are people like me on the fence trying to decide which console to buy. PS4 is tempting because it is going to have superior multiplats 99% of the time. However with the price drop xbox one could be an option if it has enough genuine stunning exclusives on the system. I am willing to take a small hit in multiplats if the exclusives are awesome. Now I dont want to purchase xbox one and feel duped because of previously xbox exclusive games landing on ps4. My rationale for forgoing the PS4 is nullified by such moves. This is the reason I hate timed exclusives.

Its all an effort to make your console more atractive than the competition. Making it a tough choice for you is the point.Do you think marketing deals on 3rd party titles such as Watch Dogs or Destiny are pointless as well?

Most people buy timed exclusives on the platform they appear on first, especially if it's a new IP or the first instance of a game in a new generation. For new IP, future sequels are then closely associated with that hardware, meaning the lion's share of sequel sales will go to that platform. See: BioShock, Rainbow Six, Ghost Recon, Mass Effect, Splinter Cell.

This works even if the game is only console exclusive (is launches simultaneously on PC.

Question here is how exactly is the word reveal being used, cause in this sentence:

"A reliable source has confirmed that Microsoft is going to have at least one "big" third-party exclusive reveal during their stage show."

reveal can be used as both a noun or a verb.

I'm betting on verb since the title just said Xbox Exclusive.

I would assume it's like last year where they just had a few publishers act like their games were Xbox exclusive.

While I'm not a fan of timed exclusives as a consumer the theory is sound enough although it doesn't guarantee results and can even backfire longer term.

:Last gen MS pursued timed aggressively for three main reasons I reckon:

  • as they launched first it gave the appearance they had a much bigger library than PS3 and was intended to cool PS3 uptake as much as possible post PS3 launch - it inflated (albeit temporarily) MS library and defalted (again temporarily) PS3 library
  • the core demographic that MS has tended to base much of its exclusive focus on isn't noted for its high degree of patience, plus its a demographic that is quite happy to be insular and feel positive about "getting stuff first"
  • in general for a new IP being timed means there's more chance that the initial install base will be on the console it hits first, giving that console more sales over time provided the franchise remains popular

This gen I imagine MS approached it with the same thinking: timed exclusives would bolster their launch library and would again serve to temporarily deflate PS4 library of titles for a while and would play into the sense XB1 "gets stuff first".

I really don't like timed exclusives whoever does it. I understand and am fine with timed exclusives that have been part funded in a positive way (say TitanFall) but literally paying to trying and hold back a competitor is poor competition from a consumer perspective.

Anyway business wise there are solid reasons to consider it as a strategy, particularly for new IP. Outside of new IP the benefits dilute over time particularly in the franchise is equally popular irrespective of platform - for example last gen I doubt the expensive GTA DLC made a blind bit of difference for MS although I'm sure R* were happy to take the cash knowing they'd see the same sales on 360 and PS3 irrespective of the deal.

Please be Shenmue 3! This would change the whole console war landscape.

lol no... unless you are being facetious. I find it hard to tell these days. :)

Shenmue 3 would be a nice feather in the cap, but no console is going to get game-changing numbers from it. Not even close.
It's a niche series that was left for dead over 12 years ago.

A Shenmue 3 would likely excite the extreme hardcore (and rightfully so), but even the most amazing marketing would make selling this game to the amount of mainstream gamers required to "change the whole console war landscape" damn near impossible.
It would be the 3rd entry to a series probably less than 1/4th of current gamers have even played, not to mention the follow-up to a sequel that even less played. Neither SEGA as a brand, nor Yu Suzuki as a designer, have the same level of influence in the current gaming landscape as they did fourteen years ago.

edit: ^ cilonen beat me- with less words & a superior Christopher Lee avatar.

It's either incompetent journalism, or as you say, "not newsworthy", i.e. just an exclusive reveal (not an exclusive game).

My money is on a Call of Duty reveal... (cross platform).

And let's not forget how much MS played up the Metal Gear Rising reveal at E3 several years back. People thought the game was 360 exclusive for like half a day.

No way. I consider myself a hardcore gamer and would seriously be pissed if Shenmue 3 was the announcement. The only enjoyment I would get would be the meltdowns on this forum from the console warriors.

Control the hype, control the hype....

Screw it, hope it is something that makes me buy an Xbox One.

(Shenmue 3 , I hope it is you)
