Super Smash Bros. Invitational @ E3 2014 participants, hosts and rules detailed

An amazing list of participants, fantastic commentators and a ruleset to both promote the game and to just have fun. Grand Finals are where things will get extra serious, and I like that.

Congratulations to everyone who's invited, and I really hope you all have a great time. I hope DJNintendo gets to pick Bowser.

Man, the best part of this tournament is that the mixed ruleset ensures that nobody is happy. We get bitter tears from both sides of the aisle!

Curious that the finals are on Battlefield after the big "no items final destination only" mode debacle. If their idea of serious play was FD, why not play it there? It's Nintendo, so I'm not prepared to believe they actually reacted to the fan feedback that quickly, but a curiosity nonetheless.

The guy who was making the list of players (JC Rodrigo iirc) follows competitive Smash, or has been the last 6-8 months. I wouldn't be surprised if it was because of him and because prog/D1 have been in constant contact with him that Battlefield was chosen over FD for GFs. Battlefield is widely considered, by the competitive community, the best neutral stage while FD favors more projectile-based characters like Falco and etc. Making lots of MUs really dumb while BF is more fair and some characters *need* platforms to be good.

Anyway, THIS NEWS IS AWESOME. I don't even really care about the rules for Rounds 1-3, the player list was my main concern and I am so, so relieved. THAT GAMECUBE ADAPTER MAKES ME HYPED THOUGH!!! So buying one!

FUCKING AMSA BEING THERE MAKES ME SMILE. LIKE HOLY CRAP. :D :D

Also, it mentioned that the participants will choose one character through a draft, which I assume means no mirror matches.

Not a problem, just interesting.

It really isn't a huge deal, and I get that this is just advertising, but would it really have hurt to do a standard tournament?

yes

"pro" players' way of playing smash bros it's not the only way,and this tournament is made to advertise the game, all of it,included items, free for all, etc.

also,it's not like it was a serious tournament to begin with..the player will have at best a superficial understanding of how the game works compared to melee and brawl

They already have an avenue of advertising all its features, without any restrictions, though. It's called a Direct.

If you're going through the trouble of setting up a tournament, then maybe it should cater to that crowd.

I don't want to sound ungrateful, because it is still cool Nintendo is doing this, but it's not like Nintendo lacks ways of showing off all the features of a game if it really wants to.

Did Scar just say that the participants will have time to practice beforehand? Couldn't catch exactly what he said.

Yeah, ultimately it's just one big showcase. I get it. I in no way advocate that there's only "one" way to play smash. I was just saying, if you're gonna get the commentators from the pro scene, players from the pro scene, and target it at people who watch the pro scene, why not follow them?

Oh well, it really is no huge deal. Like you said, the players won't even be that well acquainted with the mechanics.

Still, The fact that they're doing this at all and including well known and well liked people from the scene is absolutely amazing. I'm definitely excited. Dat adapter reveal music.

Free-for-alls have been pretty interesting if everyone takes it seriously. I remember doing all sorts of crazy shit. Grabbing people and using them to block projectiles. Teaming up with players on occasion for combos. People have gotten too settled into this melee tourney traditional rule set up.

and until now directs have been so successful in making people buy a wii U,right?

Geoff is usually busy shitting on Nintendo during E3, and he's kind of an ass about it as well. Wonder what happens now that Nintendo is paying him to be nice. I'm sure it ain't as much as that Doritos/Dew money.

You're changing the argument completely.

And even if your point was relevant, just because they want to advertise all the features of a game doesn't always mean the method chosen is an appropriate avenue to accomplish it.

It depends on context. The context of a tournament is maybe not the best place or form of delivering that information, because it brings certain expectations and limitations with it.

I'm not that that familiar with the smash pro players but I want know they guy from least years Evo would played ice climbers and who did the "whable" all the time (I really don't know if his nickname was Whable).

Is he on the list?
I loved watching him play.

You had his nickname, just misspelled, Wobbles it is and he was not invited, no

The argument is that its not about the people playing its the people watching that matter to Nintendo. The nod to the tourney community also gives them more positive press.

And with that "nod," they assume the risk that people are going to be dissapointed for not taking up all the trappings associated with it.

It cuts both ways.

I'm just happy we're getting this.

Couldn't care less about the rules or whatever, I'll worry about that when I get the game and participate in tourneys. After E3 we'll have an abundance of Smash footage, more so than the 40min Direct, and not only from this tourney, but hands on impressions and videos from Best Buys event. That should be able to satiate us until at least the 3DS release. I'm fucking hyped.

It's a fun, casual, all inclusive tournament. They want to show off all the features and get all the types of fans excited.

Character draft (and the limited characters available), items, and 4-player matches are pretty silly, but this sounds like it'll be fun to watch anyway.

no change of argument..you said they already had a way to adverise the game,I answered with the fact that direct have not been that effective as advertisement, that's why nintendo is trying new ways to advertise its games, the tournament is one of them .

also,as i said earlier,it was never meant to be a serious tournament to begin with, since at best all the players will be able to play the game for a couple hours before the event begins,or at worst the 1st round will be their first experience with the game..not really the ideal situation for a serious contest.that's because this is advertisement first, and then a tournament

Any word on whether the Gamecube adapter will work with transferred Wii VC games? Because then I'd definitely get one. My Wii's being kept alive almost exclusively because I can only play several of my downloaded games with a GCN controller.

Honestly you have to be a real finicky person to get upset that this one tournament isn't being run exactly to competitive standards.

guys capcom ultra street fighter 4 exhibition

Random select, 1 round, random ultra and random edition!

Also why quote "pros". They are professional gamers (some of them). I mean Team Liquid, EG and Curse aren't small at all. They sponsor some of the biggest (if not the biggest) players in competitive gaming.

Agreed, this is outreach and a showcase, pure and simple. They made some impressive moves bringing pro players and offering the GC adapter, but they obviously never meant for this to be on par with an Evo tourney. It's fan-service, why not enjoy being serviced?
