Predict the biggest B.O. bomb of summer 2014: Jupiter Ascending Delayed

Unfortunately, I think it's either going to be Edge of Tomorrow, or Jupiter Ascending. Both look fantastic, and original Sci-Fi is exactly what Hollywood should be pouring blockbuster money into. But the audiences just don't seem prime to agree.

Didn't have The Rock starring in it.

That dude can make a stinker profitable.
No kidding, eh? GI Joe Retaliation had the potential to tank big-time (the huge delay, lousy reviews) but it did great.

Yes, and it looks like it's going to be awesome. I know a few people that are hyped for that movie.
It completely went under my radar.
Looks like the previous movie did really really well, so there's hope for this one.

And hey, I'm all for it if it tosses Serkis another paycheck.

Edge of Tomorrow will probably bomb domestically relative to its budget of $178m, but Cruise's movies traditionally do pretty well in foreign markets. So I actually think it'll do ok once you add the international gross. Plus the consensus positive reviews will also help (95% on RT).

These movies I think have the highest probability of bombing relative to their budgets:

1. Jupiter Ascending ($150m budget)
2. Hercules ($110m budget)
3. TMNT ($125m budget)

To be fair, Edge of Tomorrow is based on a Japanese light novel, so I wouldn't call it original, but Jupiter Ascending just looks bad to me, I want to change my vote to that.

Maleficient or Edge of Tomorrow are my votes.

I mean...who wants these movies? I'm not sure anymore.

Edge of Tomorrow is an adaptation of a Japanese novel. That's why it was made.

I will agree on Maleficient, it looks stupid and will likely bomb hard.

1. Jupiter Ascending ($150m budget)
2. Hercules ($110m budget)
3. TMNT ($125m budget)

Wait, you think TMNT will bomb? You're going to be in for a rude awakening.

I don't think GotG will bomb. Like if it does TIH numbers then yeah, but if it accomplishes phase 1 Thor/Cap numbers, then it'll be a success for Disney/Marvel.

Jupiter Ascending is my pick. The Wachowskis' track record hasn't been too good when it comes to the BO as of late. The "creators of the Matrix" doesn't carry too much weight these days.

Op, I'm surprised that you picked that movie when Angie is already bringing in good money from last nights showings.

Jupiter and Guardians fit the bill at this time. The latter having a ton of pressure because it will be something that all studios look at when thinking about producing an out there comic book movie.

Jupiter Ascending: THE MEGATHREAD

I don't know. A fancy looking action romance flick starring Tatum and Kunis will probably draw a lot of money from the Twilight crowd. I expect it to be a surprising hit even if most of the intended sci-fi audience hates it.

If A Million Ways to Die in the West even breaks even I will be shocked.

A western comedy starring Seth McFarlane not voicing a character. No fucking way people are going to pay money to see that, right?

Everyone seemed interested in the Maleficient when it was first announced, the rumblings didn't begin until the trailer. I still think it will do well though.

I had to look up what Jupiter Ascending was, and the pic on IMDB looks so bad.

I will straight up bet money that Jupiter Ascending bombs so hard it leaves a crater in the Earth

And yeah guys, Maleficent isn't bombing so get off that train

GotG won't bomb. It won't hit the numbers of other Marvel movies but it definitely won't bomb -- it'll still be profitable.

Tom Cruise's sci fi groundhog day movie is the most likely flop imo.

Wait, you think TMNT will bomb? You're going to be in for a rude awakening.

As a big TMNT fan in the 90's, nothing about this movie makes me excited. The designs look terrible and they cast the talent-less Megan Fox as April. Not to mention it's being directed by Jonathan Liebesman, who's made some of the worst movies ever. I would not be surprised at all if this movie gets panned by critics across the board.

Also, is TMNT still popular with kids today? I have young nephews and they showed no interest in the movie when we saw the trailer a while ago.

It's technically an adaption, but it's not like the story has a built-in audience that producers banked on when financing the film.

Jupiter Ascending bombs hardest.
Hercules bombs less.
Malificient makes very little but is profitable.
Lucy barely fails to make money.
A Million Ways to Die in the West is profitable, but not a hit.
Guardians of the Galaxy surprises with a meh opening but gets serious legs from word of mouth and lack of competition.
Edge of Tomorrow surprises less, makes no money.
Transformers makes buckets of money.
How to Train Your Dragon 2 makes buckets of money.
Sex Tape bombs despite the small budget.
TMNT makes back the budget but struggles to cover marketing.
Expendables 3 makes a good profit.
The Giver is a disappointment.
Sin City does ok.
22 Jump Street does ok.
Tammy makes respectable money.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes makes buckets of money.
Purge 2 makes less than Purge, but does ok.

Guardians of The Galaxy.

Edit: lol who gave that budget to Jupiter Ascending? It will bomb so hard it will wake Godzilla up.

I mean who is this movie for? I guess for the Disney fans, but are there really enough of them to beat out those going to see X-men in it's second week, and the huge crowd waiting to see Seth McFarlane's follow up to Ted? I really doubt it.

it had a solid thursday night and it already did 20 million in foreign B.O. It might not be a hit but it's already out of the "bomb" realm.

Yeah.

What even is this? Looks like some off-brand kids show and one of them is a raccoon and another is a tree.

I don't get this logic. The movie is going to make millions on the Marvel brand alone. I think enough good will has been built up over the past 6 years for audiances to give Marvel the benefit of the doubt.

See, you have to separate your own feelings from that of the most likely target audience. I agree with you 100%, but as much as it pains me, I still think the movie will be a huge success.

This is a tough call. I'm not sure there will be any epic bombas this summer. Relative to production costs, Edge of Tomorrow will probably make the least bank of the blockbusters imo.

EDIT: Forgot about Jupiter Ascending.. yeah, that one.

Did you know they made another Planet of the Apes movie?
I certainly didn't until recently.

I love you Dr. Zaius

You mean that critically acclaimed movie from 2011 that made more money that all the other movies in the series combined (including Burton's remake)?

That one?

Yeah, it's sequel will be a bomb....lol

TMNT is insanely popular with kids today, last time I was in target there was an entire isle dedicated to the toys and every kid I see has a turtles backpack or toy in there hand.
