Its definitely tailored with modern-conveniences, such as fast-travel. But I didn't find it detracted too much from the game. Honestly, as I've gotten older, I'm much more conscious of how these Skinner-boxes like to whittle away our hours on useless activities. I actually have begun to hate it when a game eats up too much of my time on things like movement or inventory management.
Edit: I did not like how you could accomplish everything in one play-through, with the exception of grinding certain miracles/ sorceries. I ran out of steam at around LVL 255, and haven't touched the game since. I got my money's worth though, which is what matters.
I definitely agree with this. I really don't mind fast travel in games either and I didn't mind it Dark 2 (I was actually happy it was there), but I just couldn't get into it for some reason. I think it just came along at time when I was really busy with other things as well having my attention focused more on the PS4 and X1.
I'll definitely give it a second shot over the Summer and hope I can get into as did I Demon's and Dark 1.
