Destiny Alpha Gameplay Leaks [Update: Luke from Bungie comments, read post 1557]

One thing that definitely concerns me is that it seems like Bungie has traded the tightly constricted level designs and campaign missions of Halo for a litany of mundane objectives like "defend the hack point", "collect the sapphire wires" etc. It begins to feel like a laundry list of work I need to do rather than enjoyable entertainment.

Here's hoping there's some more creative or elaborate missions in the game...

There is a full campaign with cutscenes and all that which isn't in any of these videos. The stuff you're seeing is the patrol free roam.

Come on, Halo was just 'go here and kill/collect/activate this' wrapped up in a narrative. I am sure Bungie have not forgot how to make a story and guide players to objectives.

You never know, collecting those sapphire wires might lead to some really cool gameplay elements and shiny loot!

the firefights look like the a perfect cross of halo and cod.

exactly what halo 4 tried and failed to do, except bungie had the benefit of building something from scratch.

Those are the public "filler" missions. The set levels definitely have a narrative-set mission structure (and specific bosses, etc).

Has someone uploaded this somewhere else? Because the links in the first page unsurprisingly don't work any more. Not hyped in the slightest for Destiny (probably because I'm not a huge fan of primarily online shooters), but curious of non-scripted footage nonetheless.

So this isn't the campaign? Well that's a relief I suppose.

To fill in what others have said; the game mode is called Patrol and it's for players who want to explore large areas and pick up minor objectives as they go. The player in the video finds a small object that opens up a short side-quest for instance.

Nah this is the free-roam content. You're free to skip all of this stuff if you want. The main content is stuff like campaign, dungeon and raid-like stuff, etc.

Hype being restored. :)

So could you for instance do a campaign mission and then do a patrol mode side quest? Or are they completely separate modes/in different areas?

I know the game hasn't been released, this isn't the final game, etc etc. But damn this looks boring. At least Borderlands had crazy weapons. I understand Bungie has made multiple excellent games and graphically this looks great, and they've taken a lot of time to make it...BUT jeeze it's 5 months away and I've yet to see anything ramp up firefight wise. Like, every single bit of footage looks almost exactly the same with nothing as a high point.

It's really unfair how some of you are judging this footage of the game being played by a person instead of waiting for a carefully orchestrated stage demo being controlled by Bungie employees.

Yep you will go to those areas in the open world and come out (at least that's what they've led everyone to believe) and do anything you want in the open world.

The game does have crazy weapons, all we've seen is low-level shit. It's not like the guns in Borderlands are especially enthralling for the first few hours anyway.

Peter Dinklage is absolutely terrible here. I'm pretty sure the player is supposed to feel a sense of wonder while exploring these areas but the bored narrator voice completely ruins that. They didn't even attempt to alter his voice probably because they want to make it obvious they hired a big star. Meh.

Everything I've seen from this game so far just looks really boring. The combat encounters aren't interesting and the enemy AI seems almost non-existent. I just watched like 40 minutes of footage and there wasn't a single "whoa" moment to be found.

The whole idea of Destiny seems to be the ability to travel the universe and do what you like, when you like it. They also have very grand plans of having new content each day, some of which might happen randomly, so you have to be in the right place at the right time to see/play it.

People might be doing their solo game and as they travel to the next spot, a public event kicks in which you could ignore or jump in because some cool loot might be given out.

If people have not seen all the MoreConsole Destiny stuff, they really need to check it out.

QFT

It's only an alpha, the final version will come with narration explaining why this game is like nothing before it

Far too much hiding behind boxes and popping out for a second or two before hiding behind a box in the first two videos.

Yep, that looks like a first person shooter where you press the button over a waypoint and shoot dudes while numbers fly off of them. Not really feeling any part of this so far.

Huh, never heard of it. Checking it out now. Seems like a decent youtube channel.

He is in hype mode for Destiny but he does manage to give out some well thought out information and speculation. If anyone is unsure about the amount of content, how Bungie plan to keep things going etc, he is well worth checking out.

We havent seen what a next gen or cross gen Borderlands would be like, but I'll give you bigger and cleaner. But sexy?

There's as much sexiness and personality in that footage as a rusty oil tanker. Its missing ooomph. Something. Some visual risk taking, an element of danger, something stark and unique that defines the look and feel of Destiny. Not talking about grit or angst or an edginess, but something with impact and character and presence.

I usually hate the word 'generic' and feel that its often just tossed out there without much thought behind it, but in this case I can see where its coming from.

Am also unsure that the RPG mechanics here will be all that deep, especially considering the fact that you use the very same character and gear in competitive multiplayer, and I'm sure that has major ramifications on the overall design in terms of reigning it in. Its a limitation that other games don't really have to deal with.

But anyway, we're on the verge of what must be a major blowout, so who knows how much of this will hold or change in just a matter of a few days.

Not sure what you mean? The thing about developers like Bungie is that they'll ace the gameplay mechanics, and not rely on a particular 'hook' mechanic to get people playing. I think people feel the need to look at a game like this and look for that "hook" to draw players in, when more often than not, that hook is just a shallow mechanic that gets old really fast. Borderlands hook was it's infinite guns and quirckyness, both of which grew tiresome pretty quickly imo. I lost interest in loot in the game very early on. You would just keep rotating to slightly better stats as you progressed through the game. Destiny at least appears to be building upon the idea of weapon personalization/rpg mechanics in that regard.

Borderlands art style also grew really old as well. The art in Destiny is vastly superior, especially in regard to characters.

That guy who acts like he loves destiny more than anything else in the world, but wants the inferior xbone verson?

We'll you're getting video of a shitty player. Of coarse there will be.

I'm sorry the player is pretty bad.
Yep. That also happened with Halo. The games themeselves are super fun (personally the most fun I've ever had in the FPS genre) but videos of bad (or new) players can make it look like a really dull FPS, especially if they use the AR. If I had to guess, I'd say that's exactly what's happening here, we are watching the equivalent of that.

I have some reservations regarding the gameplay (movement speed, reticle bloom, etc) but I very much doubt it will be a boring game. I mean, it could be inferior to Halo, but boring? Nah.

I'm not enterily sure. He makes a jump between game modes in the videos I think.

The first, second and third video:

• The player is at the end of a mission where the objective is to kill an enemy called The Hive Wizard.
• When the player kills the enemy the screen says "Mission End" and a timer starts to count down from 25 seconds.
• The player is then transferred to his ship, off-planet, where he is asked to choose his next destination.

(Here it seems to be a weird cut or he just progresses automatically to a new mission)

• The new mission begins during the night, and the objective is to find a structure called The Skywatch. As the player moves along and the sun is starting to rise he encounters enemies of various types and explores different environments, both inside and outside.
• During all of these bigger missions Ghost (the AI companion) is talking to the player, telling him about events in the world and the objectives you are undertaking.

The fourth and fifth video:

• This is most likely Patrol Mode, so the person who is playing has made a jump between game modes that we don't see in the videos.
• As we follow the player we can see that he picks up three "quests" in total:
- Hole In The Wall: Find a hidden cave and clear it from enemies.
- The Wire: Collect wire wraps from fallen enemies that are scattered all over the map.
- Brachistrochrone Trajectory: Scan and transfer data of valuable relics.

• All of these "quests" are collected from Beacons that The Tower send to the Guardians who patrol the areas. It's completely optional to pick them up.
• Pressing the touchpad (I think it's that button) opens up Nav Mode which gives you details about each objective.
• During Patrol your exploration won't be narrated as much by Ghost. He only seems to speak when you finish your objective or if there's an event going on nearby.
• During the last minutes of the final video an event is showing up near the player. The screen then says: EVENT INCOMING (OPTIONAL) - Defend the Warsat

lol

Some people value ecosystem and friends over marginal performance differences. Him buying the Xbox version somehow devalues his excitement for the game?

Get out of here with this shit, it's tiresome.

I'm more concerned with how weak that AR is and bouncy when ADS.

I'm hoping its just a stock gun with no upgrades. But it wasn't doing shit to those level 5 Elders.

Weird to see so much ADS after Wolfenstein and especially for a Bungie game :P

I guess it really does have to be in every AAA shooter now. Going by a lot of the responses in favor of ADS in this thread. Game mechanics that have been done in the past and much better without ADS, are now being attributed to ADS, and are somehow not possible without it.

Apparently I need to ADS if I want to move slowly and shoot accurately, I can't just move slowly and shoot accurately like I always have in games like Counter-Strike, Rainbow Six, etc, etc. Movement based inaccuracy has been a thing forever, without the need of ADS, your bullet spread can be all over the place if you try to shoot while running, jumping etc. ADS is just a visual aid to emphasize this core mechanic of "realistic" shooters. It's not actually the result of ADS, just a visualization of a mechanic that's been around for over a decade.

It's just bizarre how ADS is now the only way to achieve realistic shooting models of guns according to a lot of posters in this thread. Go back and play more shooters, pay attention to your accuracy while running around, while standing, crouched, jumping, scoped in, etc. ADS has nothing to do with "realistic" shooting mechanics, it's purely visual.

Neogaf - No jokes allowed.

NeoGAF - Where people get canned for much less. Jokes tend to be annoying when they're not funny.

OT: I really hope that Bungie impresses us at E3 and brings some new things that show off the game in a realistic environment, not another boring vertical slice.

After seeing the video, I'm looking forward to the game. It did look like other games in the past but that doesn't matter. As long as the game is fun and has that Bungie polish then I'll be happy.

And the ghost voice was fine with me. I thought it fit the atmosphere of the game for me.

I'm beginning to think you have some sort of RNG for these anti-ADS screeds. It would explain why you have so many posts that are just small variations on each other.

As funny as it is to watch your whole loop of ADS rant ----> someone says hey that's just your opinion ----> rant about how it's not just your opinion, ADS is objectively bad unless you're a casual ----> someone says hey that's just your opinion.... I think we understand your position pretty well at this point.
