Destiny Alpha Gameplay Leaks [Update: Luke from Bungie comments, read post 1557]

Consider this closed alpha build compared to the public "beta" of BF4.

There is no comparison. I can't wait to see what new things Bungie will show off at E3.

There simply has to be something they've yet to show off beyond new environments/weapons/skills and the like. Super large player areas with crazy amounts of people engaging in random free roam fire fights... dynamic level interaction beyond this (kinda tired) Old Russia complex stuff ... something.

This does not look like a 10 year hundreds of millions of dollars best ever selling new franchise. It looks like next gen Borderlands sans cell shading and humor.

Really hope E3 blows the doors off but this looks... kinda boring.

I feel the same way. I want to be hyped for this game, but they have given me no reason to be.

Bungie's ADS solution here looks shitty. Why does only the front reticule have any recoil? Really weird.

It's they way they used to do things In Ghost Recon with reticle bloom.

But why does every company use the same weapon movement. Doom weapon view > buttstock of weapon moves over to shoulder and fires > buttstock swings back. The buttstock moves 10 times as much as the barrel...which is exactly opposite from real life. Why doesn't a company do something fresh and new and change that so the weapon swivels on a proper axis for once. In that way when doing ADS the stock is stationary against the shoulder and the barrel pivots up and down. Oh wait, then you wouldn't get to see that 'purty weapon' throughout 99% of the game. But you would actually see the game then and have better awareness.

Looks great, can't wait to see its final form. Co-op should be fantastic, love the look of this world, and gunplay looks like it'll be very satisfying.

Need to see actual like campaign footage. This is boring and the gun sounds weak. It reminds me of the DEFEND THIS POINT sections in Halo Reach.

Ah, the defend this point from waves of enemies gameplay. Ugh. I still have faith they have something more interesting to show at E3 and this is just a really bad example of what to expect.

I'm still unsure. I want it to be good and I know it will but something is still holding me back a little. I know its a Bungie and I have the confidence in them so maybe the beta will put to rest my feelings.

I think it's a pretty novel approach to giving player feedback on recoil (vs using a HUD crosshair) -- the outer crosshair gives frame of reference that would be reduced if you shook whole gun.

I don't like the bullet sponge nature of the combat..

I think it works with this particular concept. With life bars and damage numbers you get a greater feel for how powerful different weapons are, especially if they land critical hits.

I personally think that the RPG aspect that Borderlands brought to this genre is somewhat genius, and it hasn't been explored much at all yet. Can't wait to see how it feels in Destiny.

Having only watched the vimeo link, it looks boring. Huge, huge maps but then being confined to just a small area for the encounter just seems dull to me.
Also, where mah vehicles at?

Why is the AI so bad?

game looks boring as shit btw

I don't think it's particularly bad. It's rather the easy difficulty that makes the AI look bad. The player just approaches them head on and they don't do much but walk backwards and try to shoot. He would probably be dead doing that on a higher difficulty.

You can see that there are different enemy types (light armored ones mainly) that try to flank the player quietly while he is being distracted with other enemy types in front of him. On higher difficulty I expect these kind of enemy tactics to become very dangerous.

Also there were a part where some enemies were throwing glowing grenades at the player in a pitch black room. That also seemed very interesting and challenging.

Because they're in free roam mode where it's more about exploration when running into a bunch of low level enemies scattered around in the starter world (Old Russia) without being more carefully planned out encounters.

I don't think that's the case here as they were part of an event. I'm sure come the final version they'll know some paths and where to find cover, just not yet.

The volume of interactions where the player triggers his AI companion to do a task with Square, during which he defends the area seem disproportionately high, in the videos we've seen of this game.

I can only hope the game has improved or will improve drastically since this build cause good lord this game looks boring. It's like Borderlands but without any of the personality to uphold it during it's shortcomings.

Looks like Borderlands with Halo art + gunplay. That's all I wanted from it!

That said, that HUD is massive and takes up such a large portion of the screen. Hopefully you can turn parts of it off.

jesus. this is an insipid mash up of every left trigger right trigger open-world shootemup bangbang game of the last five years.

I have to agree with the general sentiment so far that this game looks pretty boring.

In the second video there is some great atmosphere as he's exploring that abandoned bunker or w/e. The graphics look damn good so that was nice...but then it gets to the actual enemy encounters and it just looks so ZZZ

I'm not sure if it's just low difficulty or what but nothing about the enemy encounters seemed exciting, and if that's all there is to the game then I don't see anything too compelling about it. Unless they have a lot more to show from this game that we don't know about then I'm thinking this is a pass.

Seems rather like Diablo 3's initial release...good production values, tons of items, a functional combat system...but no actual draw to entice you to do anything.

The videos only server to remind my preorder was money well spent. After throwing up over Watch Dogs and suffering spinal fractures from the endless rubberband whiplashes in BF4 and then witnessing the incredible and generic reskin ripoff that is Hardline, this game cannot come soon enough.

No he's in patrol mode. Nothing is really scripted and events are random.

Basically. I'm pretty desperate for MP game for PS4 right now. :S

I pre ordered this on PSN...

Can't cancel.

Wanted to finally try a bungie game, but these gameplay videos have shaken a lot of my confidence in it.

I think it's gonna end up just fine. When people start to get into their classes, find awesome gear and then team up with random players or friends for challenging raids. I just can't see how it won't be successful in some regard.

I mean they haven't even shown The Tower, the story, the competitive multiplayer, the other 7 planets/moons etc. etc. There's so much stuff going on in this game.

I still have faith that this is going to be a great game. Let's wait until the conference and the beta before we start calling it garbage.

The game just looks so generic, like your run of the mill FPS. Nothing I've seen of this game so far screams "buy me".

Bungie's just running into bad luck it seems. Even when the game gets 'leaked', it ends up being a free-roam patrol mode, which is inherently "boring" in the sense that the player is not playing for a specific objective. That doesn't excuse the other apparent issues the game has, but it also doesn't show what Destiny is setting itself up to be.

And neither has Bungie. So I'm hoping we get a good look at Campaign and/or Competitive Multiplayer next week. The dancing .gif from earlier reminded me of what I was really looking for in the game - customizing my character and running around large spaces with my brother shooting everything that moves. That on its own will be quite a ride even with "generic mechanics", especially if half of what they said ends up happening. I hope it's not all talk though. I don't think it's going to be a bad game (nor do I want it to do), but we really haven't seen anything that shows it's going to be the "next big thing". That's the problem.

Unsolicited reveals like these are less biased than developer presentations at least. I don't want to hear anymore buzzwords or read anymore articles. Show us something worthwhile and then when the beta comes around we'll see for ourselves.

Calling a game garbage based on a few alpha videos is pretty silly, but I think it's still okay to express personal disinterest based on the same videos.
