Destiny Alpha Gameplay Leaks [Update: Luke from Bungie comments, read post 1557]

I watched all the footage.

The world looks very desolate, and not necessarily in a bad way. It's beautiful, it's quiet, and it's expansive. Reminds me a lot of the second mission in Halo. Hopefully there's enough stuff within the world to make it worth exploring. The various side quests and events that cropped up as the guy was walking around seemed encouraging. I really enjoyed the bit where he dipped down into that tunnel and found a bunch of level 77 enemies who immediately proceeded to kick his ass. It reminds me of that cave past the graveyard at the beginning of Dark Souls.

Combat still leaves much to be desired. The Supers and the knife-throwing looked slick, but the regular fighting was bland. The AI in particular struck me as unimpressive, which is all the more surprising given that this is a Bungie game. When the player encountered a few similarly-leveled Fallen, they immediately went into retreat-mode and just hid, waiting for him to stab or shoot them with little resistance. Only the higher-leveled Fallen appeared even remotely interesting to fight.

That said, I don't think it's too bad, given that most of the footage was just the dude walking around the world. I haven't played many open world games where every random encounter was amazing - compared to something like Fallout, or even Borderlands, it seemed fine for what it was. When it comes to scripted missions, however, Bungie has to do better. The fight against the wizard was absolutely lame, and the other Strike they showed off earlier was just as dull.

I guess it really does have to be in every AAA shooter now. Going by a lot of the responses in favor of ADS in this thread. Game mechanics that have been done in the past and much better without ADS, are now being attributed to ADS, and are somehow not possible without it.

Apparently I need to ADS if I want to move slowly and shoot accurately, I can't just move slowly and shoot accurately like I always have in games like Counter-Strike, Rainbow Six, etc, etc. Movement based inaccuracy has been a thing forever, without the need of ADS, your bullet spread can be all over the place if you try to shoot while running, jumping etc. ADS is just a visual aid to emphasize this core mechanic of "realistic" shooters. It's not actually the result of ADS, just a visualization of a mechanic that's been around for over a decade.

It's just bizarre how ADS is now the only way to achieve realistic shooting models of guns according to a lot of posters in this thread. Go back and play more shooters, pay attention to your accuracy while running around, while standing, crouched, jumping, scoped in, etc. ADS has nothing to do with "realistic" shooting mechanics, it's purely visual.
Good post. Didn't read through this whole thread, but it's sad to hear if so many people are in favour of ADS as the only way. Personally prefer seeing my peripherals and not as narrow a FoV.

We've seen one section of Earth. But I get what your saying. I agree as well.

To be fair, we really don't know how big each zone is. It's starting to look like all of the "Earth" gameplay takes place in Old Russia. And given the scope of the game, I wouldn't be surprised (nor put blame on Bungie) if that happened to be the case.

I didn't like that Bungie added Reticle Bloom into Halo Reach, but I thought it was neat how crouching made your shots more accurate. Strafes were a bit more interesting, especially if you scoped on the last shot to further tighten the spread.

Agreed, getting tired of having to ADS. I want to see the rest of the world, not a red dot/iron sight.

God, it still looks like Borderlands...but more lifeless. It's beautiful, but lifeless. Combat looked awful, frankly.

ADS is still shitty

Come on, Bungie. :( I wanna like this game so bad.

There are other zones on Earth. We know that for sure. Chicago is in, the Tower is obviously in, and I believe there were one or two others as well.

Destiny runs at 30fps

So basically locked framerate is 30fps for PS4?

Destiny on PS4 runs at 1080p 60 FPS? "No word here, but it ran great, a looker on PS4" says Bungie

Bungie's upcoming sci-fi new IP, Destiny is one of the most awaited and highly anticipated title of 2014. Today via official Playstation Blog, SCEA’s Senior Social Media Manager Sid Human some interesting new details regarding how the game looks on PS4, its appearance at Sony's E3 2014 press conference and many other factors.

DestinySid Human was asked about Destiny's resolution, frame-rate per second figure and its overall performance on PS4, and to this he replied that there's nothing to share at this time on these parameters but added that the game definitely looks quite good on the system.
"No word here yet, but it looked (and ran) great," and "Definitely a looker"/quote]

When asked whether Destiny will be showcased at E3 2014? Bungie's Community Manager replied: "You’ll see us at E3," and

"That happens in Los Angeles rarely stays in Los Angeles."

A multi-million FPS project [let us not forget the $500m reference] can't have 60fps for while the "indie" Metro Redux can? And if I am wrong (probably I am to be honest) why would they not tell the whole world about it considering they do know how important frame rate per second is these days?

Please tell me I am wrong and stupid.

I see some fellow Gafers with the Alpha. ;)

It could be 60fps; I'll remove that part until it's confirmed.

However, given Bungie's track record and the apparent inclusion of Motion Blur (something I wouldn't really expect much of in a 60fps shooter), 30fps could be just as likely.

We'll know in a few days I suppose.

I could be 60fps but they chose 30fps and better graphics.

Well, Metro was a linear game with smaller branching paths (that end up spitting you back onto the main game's one), from what I saw in this - the game is much larger and more open. Also the multiplayer aspect has to be kept in mind (up to 9 people total + AI I think it was for certain campaign areas). This game probably does run above 30 FPS at times, but Bungie decided to lock it so it was more consistent and less jumpy.

Is it very uncommon for Multiplayer FPS to have a locked 60fps? Really do not know what fps most shooters online run with so hence.

I see thanks for the info.

Even if they could go for 60fps with Destiny (which seems possible, it being a cross gen game and all) I don't think they would. Mostly because that would "force" them to go for 60fps for all the next Destiny games, and Bungie doesn't want that. They love those pretty skyboxes too much, and if they have to sacrifice 60fps for them, they will do it.

It's not like the gameplay is super fast or anything, so a locked 30fps should be fine.

Speaking of which. If for example I max out everything in a game and lock it at 60fps but it stutters/screen tearing. If I then lock it at 30fps how much smoother will it be? Have we got on average a percentage ratio?

Just because you locked a game at 60 FPS does not mean you're running it at that. Running sub 120 / 60 (on a screen that is 120Hz or 60Hz) can still result in screen tearing and stutter. 30 FPS can be divided into 120/60 so usually there is no issues with tearing and whatnot. If you still cannot hit 30 frames, you will still get issues with tearing and stutter.

Technically speaking, 30 FPS is less smooth than anything above it, but it is more consistent (giving the impression of it being smoother) unless you're locked to 60/120 and actually hitting them at all times.

Everyone shits on this game anytime it comes up. It's such a strange anti-hype anti-shooter thing going on. From the voice acting to the ADS, you've complained about it all. I can't wait to see how many complainers still buy the game.

People used to say that Titanfall was "manufactured". Like there was this gigantic focus group and EA sat down with them and the marketing team and tried to create a "fake" game that will check all the boxes and sell to the largest market possible.

After seeing these videos, for me at least, it seems Destiny is the truest "manufactured" game out there. Activision spend bazillion moolahs on the Bungie contract and basically told them: people like our loot games: Diablo, WoW. People like your shootbangs (Halo). Mix the two. We have the greatest, most complex Excel files and formulas possible. We will give you a 100% proof blueprint for the "next big thing". And this is how the game was born. Not from dat Bungie love but from dat Activision marketing machine.

Prove me wrong, Bungie, when the game ships.

Really like the gameplay. Areas look large and interesting. There are hidden paths everywhere. I was wishing I could take control of the guy and make him head down other paths he walked past.

I wish the player had mixed up his play style more. I loved Halo's gunplay, jumping on too of obstacles, flying about all over the place. The guardians all have their own movement ability like double jump and the player was never using them.

They didn't want to use their shotty either, and there was lots of situations that would have been perfect. He couldn't throw a grenade to save his life either.

I'm taking that most, if not all of that was patrol mode with enemies placed in certain areas without much scripting. Looking forward to seeing the same areas used in more structured encounters in strikes, raids and campaign.

Those canyons look great for tooling about on sparrows. I don't know if the one the player had was completely un-upgraded or if they just didn't know where the accelerator was.

People who are having issues with ADS, Bungie said a while back that hip shooting works just fine, I'm guessing it's a but like wolfenstein in that regard.

Wish I had friends at Bungie to get in on the Alpha. The beta is still a long way away. Hyped.

This is great; it's real footage of someone playing, not staged. Even if it's alpha, gives a good indication of what "just playing Destiny" is like.

I'm excited for the beta, I'm sure we'll hear about it next week and then we can experience the game ourselves.

so 1 world, 1 strike, and 1 campaign mission. The game will be huuuuuge when you think about multiple worlds.

it also feels and looks amazing, it looks fun and crisp and gameplay really seems the priority, which is the the best and most hardcore thing of any game, regardless of 60 fps or 30fps or all that crap.

Being able to accurately shoot from a hipfire position like in non-ADS shooters is certainly a part of how ADS is more realistic. You also have to take the time to pull it up to line your shot up, which changes how you play. And once aimed, you are usually limited to very slow movement and your vision is focused, reducing your ability to see elsewhere in your periphery.

I mean, if ADS is purely just a visual distinction, then what is your and everybody else's problem with it?

Yeah there are upwards of four planets, each with multiple destinations, and those videos are just one area, of one destination, on one planet. Lots of scope for fun and adventure.

Haven't watched the footage but sounds the same as halo (accuracy is the same zoomed or unzoomed, zoom is just there to help line up targets further away), just with a slightly different visual conceit.

I really didn't know how to put together what I am feeling towards this game into words, but this is the closest I can come up with. Take all of the things that are big right now - shooter? Check. Open world? Check. Loot-based? Check. Multiplayer and social elements? Check.

It seems like it has everything to become the next big thing. But something just doesn't seem to be clicking. I can't put my finger on it, it's missing something. Right now it just seems too generic and too "samey" to be the revolutionary type gameplay experience Bungie and Activision are undoubtedly hoping it will be.

Was thinking about this last night while playing me3 multiplayer. That is, i was marvelling at the variety in the game. So many different abilities and combinations. 60 different characters, each character with multiple builds depending on gear and weapons. I'm not seeing the same variety in Destiny.

edit: ofcourse me3 has two years worth of dlc (free too!, that is the multiplayer dlc was all free).

The 20 minutes of leaked alpha footage shows all the character classes and skill trees available in Destiny? How did he show so much in 20 minutes and still have times to play the game? How many characters does he create and level up? The other reports make it sound like he only played one skill tree that wasn't leveled up and he used his abilities once.

This game looks boring to me now but if I was 13 again I feel like it could definitely have absorbed a few months of my time.
