Sony E3 2014 Conference Thread

Eh. No "one last thing"? Oh well.

Averaged over the entirety of the conference It was a pretty mediocre showing. They had a bunch of stuff, for sure, but the presentation aspect was meh, particularly the second half. This felt a bit slipshod. They're already getting ready to rest on dem laurels, I fear.

Also, the exclusive (not timed, but forever exclusive) stuff is kinda annoying. That's just gamer-unfriendly. Good for Sony fans, of course, but it still leaves a bad aftertaste.

So far E3 hasn't exactly blown my socks off. Not sure if I will still be coherent enough to grok the Nintendo stream. It's 5 in the morning on a weekday, and I'm not entirely convinced these conference streams were worth the sacrifice. Good fun to watch and heckle with neogaf for sure, but nothing I couldn't have done at my own leisure.

Microsoft conference 8.5
Sony conference 7.0

After seeing all the crying in the MS thread i knew I was in for a treat seeing the same people's reactions to sonys lol. Nobody can sit their with a straight face and tell me that snooze fest was better then Microsofts. Was actually embarrassed as my buddies who I swayed away from the 360 to join me on Sony side were with me in party chat half asleep. From the cringe worthy jokes, to the TV tv tv, all the way up to the 2015 shenanigans, this was by far a complete momentum shift. Thanks Sony!!!

Both conferences were very similar. No real megaton surprises as everything was either leaked or heavily hinted at.

Yet both still showed great games.

Not sure how to feel. I was hoping for one of them to drop a major bomb. But again, what was shown at both was still good.

If you were to add this year's Microsoft conference with some bits of their crappy previous ones, making it longer, but not adding anything good to it, you'd get Sony's. The downside of Microsoft's "all CG" was basically the case with Sony's best reveals. Microsoft's was just nicer to watch.

this sucked for me .

Not interested in The Order (looks pretty tho). LP3 will be a buy but I know what to expect from it at this point. The indie stuff does nothing for me. No Man's Sky looks awesome for sure. Suda showing off another dark gritty shooter really pissed me off (where the fuck is Lilly?)..speaking of shooters... Nothing but shooters it seems. BloodBorne may be cool but I'm not a fan of the dark souls series. Then the TV garbage..and apps..and blah blah blah. Two up-ports, Awesome Batman (delayed doe) and a TEASER of Uncharted.

fuck this sucked.

Again for me personally. It seems like I just became more niche than I thought.

D+ conference.

I thought both conferences were pretty good. I would've liked some more truly unexpected announcements but overall I'm feeling pretty good as an owner of both consoles.

Was on ok conference by Sony. It only further displayed the gaping hole in first party titles they have this fall even though LBP3 is a nice addition. 2015 is shaping up to be a monster year, but damn, that's a way's off still.

Welp Sony is in the lead so far for me. Ninty might steal the spotlight tomorow morning if their presentation is awesome. But it's a bit harder to grade them in the same light as all these because it's all pre-recorded. So all the things that make a good presentation a good presentation simply don't apply to Ninty.

Sony: 9/10 - 1 point off cause Shawn talking statistics and numbers really pulled the floor out from under their momentum. But Boyes was knocking em outta the park with those reveals and games. And No Man's Sky really swept me away. All the games did. So good.

Microsoft: 8/10 - For being straight to the point and as thorough as they were about a clear message, about gamesgamesgames, and about making the players first, their conference felt altogether a little sparse. The exclusives look great. Halo Master Chief Edition made me salivate, and Sunset Overdrive is gonna be righteous.

Ubisoft: 6/10 - A relatively lackluster conference, but still delivered some goods. Not as much live gameplay as I would have liked.

EA: 3/10 - Definitely the worst of the bunch. Battlefield Hardline beta surprise was the best part of their conference. Otherwise... Meh. Bioware didn't have anything to show for Mass Effect or their other new IP, and Dragon Age Inquisition looks awesome, as we know.

Pretty much agree on all counts.

Well, I can't criticize MS for the number of CG trailers for 2015+.

Still a better show other then the lull in the middle. The first hour was solid, and ended with 2 fantastic gross-gen games and Uncharted 4. It helped there were a few genuine surprises.

Other random thoughts:

What the fuck was up with constant Vib Ribbon name drops, without an updated game?

Original Video Content free with PSN+ is nice, but you did not need to take 20 mins to go over it.

I have no idea how Naughty Dog is avoiding the Uncanny Valley with U4.

Distinct Lack of Japan anywhere near both of the shows. MS had Platinum Games, and Sony had From Software.

DISTINCT lack of SquareEnix which is perhaps the most surprising part, what the hell is going on over there.

The Order 1886 comes off as their attempt at something like Gears of War, but there is something off about the way they're selling it. I guess they need more pretext (why are you fighting, what the 'storyline' is) to get me excited about it. So far, they're just showing off how realistic it looks, and that's a good thing, but it isn't enough.

Compare that with Sunset Overdrive over on the MS side and at least they give you the backdrop of the 'world' and why you're playing it....MS has been very good at doing that for every game reveal since time immemorial.

When I first finished watching the MS show a few hours ago, I wasn't overtly impressed (other than with Sunset Overdrive) but after seeing Sony's show NOW, I am now impressed with MS; as conservative as they were, their show felt a lot more organized and substantial.

Sony will win with superior multiplatform ports but MS seems to be winning with the exclusive games.

MS: 8/10
Sony: 7/10.

And by the way, I own a PS4. Now I'm on the brink of getting an Xbone thanks to their show today.

Honestly, thinking back on the games. Pretty excited, but I feel robbed on the ending. I guess my heart just wanted that final clop to be TLG. Didn't even realized Uncharted was missing. Oh well.

The middle part without games didn't need to happen. Cool they are doing it, happy PSNow is happening and PSTV. All looks cool, but I didn't need to hear about shows or watch the trailer for Ratchet and Clank. The rest was really good, though.

Solid performance, just needs better organization.

Plus, I'm so excited for Bloodborne and No Man's Sky.

Hmm, I have to wholeheartedly agree with you here. There were many times where I nearly found myself dozing off (perhaps they shouldn't have their conferences so late?). The TV bit was absolutely insufferable.

Microsoft may have been "safe", but it kept my interest throughout, even if I ended up not wanting any of what was shown. What big news did Sony have? Remasters of MONTH old games?

umm

lbp3
bloodborne
uncharted
no mans sky

I see the concern trolling is already beginning.

Very mediocre showing for everyone.

I feel like Sony's could have been a lot better if they trimmed a lot of the fat. Those useless talking points about TV and stuff could have been shortened a lot.

No JRPG = sad times

Though, tales of hearts R mmmm

Nintendo can still easily steal this... show me X....this year, and smash bros, and metroid....and zelda....and Fzero.

give me 3 of the above, and it's all nintendo.

Not bad, but this conference would've been perfect without all of this TV stuff.

Now when's Gamescom & Tokyo Game Show? Perhaps we'll hear even more games on those other two shows.

What's with shitposts like this? I thought ConsoleGAF wants to be taken seriously.

Also....

itIhaSr5wKKMg.png

Can we mock the posters who made shitty comments directed at PC gamers now?

8/10. It had lower lows than MS's, mainly the tv section and facts montage.

But, it had FANTASTIC gameplay segments, excellent game trailers like MGSV, Uncharted 4, and basically I felt it had higher highs than MS's.

But honestly I think both conferences this year were great.
Well said. It was less consistent than MS and had some crap segments but the gameplay segments blew their's out of the water.

Great conference. Could've done without the new Pres and CEO's bit, but they started out so strong and ended really strong. So much to look forward to on PS4.

The Order looked amazing, and Bloodborne also had me insanely hyped. There were some genuinely great moments in the presser, I give it a solid A-.

Eeeeeh why did people assume PC players were being shafted for GTAV. It was a Sony conference. They aren't going to announce that the games are also coming to Xbox and PC..... I mean really....

If Sony had left out the non-gaming stuff, the press conference would've been the best. I give both MS And Sony conference a B. That other stuff really messed up the pacing.

That was pretty bad. When the most exciting thing about your conference is the announcement of a remaster of a 1998 PC game, that's not a good thing.

I think the literal announcement of a movie was what drove in the nail for me.

Well, Grim Fandango was definitely the highlight for me. Can't wait for that, hope it works out well on a controller though. Uncharted, if those are a real representation of what gameplay is going to look like, was amazing. But just a teaser so can't really put too much into it.

I actually never bought GTA V last gen so i'll definitely be buying the ps4 version. Still not sure if i want to double dip on TLOU tho. But wow, Little Big Planet 3 was totally unexpected. They revealed it so matter of factly too lol. Surprised there wasn't a bigger response to that but even more surprised by the generally negative response to it. Looks like a great game!

Still so many questions though.. WTF is Santa Monica doing? WTF is Bend doing? TLG? I guess that just leaves us more to think about until gamescon.

Man MS clearly outdid Sony. and MS played it safe, waaaay safe.

MS - B- /// Playing it safe but damn at least I wasn't bored
Sony- C- /// Simply not focused and hellbent of putting people to sleep
Ubisoft- /// lol I didn't even bother
EA- D- //// Bleh same old same old

lets see if Nintendo can bring the heat.

I have no idea how everyone is saying that Sony nailed that.

That was such a meh conference
Nothing exciting, and the middle killed it

Even in Microsoft might have shown less games, they ONLY showed games and it was one after another after another

If you look at the overall picture, it might be decent, but nothing big was announced that is new

Stack the games up and there was more here at this conference than at MSFT's show. I think they both had solid show but Playstation wins with brute force in games. Magicka 2, Grim Fandango, Bloodbourne, No Mans Sky, and the rest speak for themselves. 3rd party games being best on PS4 also are a chip to lean on. But even with that, 8/10 for MSFT, 9/10 for Sony.

I don't get it. What big news did MS have?

If you were disappointed, blame the leaks,

Me, I really liked it, had pacing issues sure but when you are supporting 3 seperate platforms its bound to happen

Nice to know Uncharted 4 is coming next year but are we basically getting nothing as far as big 1st party titles for this fall? I really had hoped that they would have one big announcement for a title releasing for the fall/christmas season this year.

I'm assuming the order is probably not going to come out this year. So are we basically just getting multiplats for the holiday season?

So my E3 Rankings so far...
1. Sony (8/10) B
2. Microsoft (6/10) C
3. Ubisoft (5/10) D+
4. EA (3/10) F

Sony showed game play and did not get leaked like Microsoft did. It was a waste of conference for MS because only Sunset Overdrive and Halo were ready. LBP3 and No Man's Sky came out of nowhere. My guess is Nintendo might be a 7/10, but that is another day.

No TLG or FFXV = instant disappointment.

Pay some fucking money to help SE and Ico studio get shit done for your console Sony.

Also Adam Boyes with the letters? What happened to the list of games you were compiling? You said the #1 thing was FF Type-0 and nothing. The list is as active as TLG's development.

Sony had a great conference but here is the issue: they should have removed Shawn Layden's entire segment. Content wise it offered a lot and the conferemce was longer than MS. Had they gotten rid of Laydem, it would have flowed much better. With that said, I am hyped.

No Man's Sky, Bloodbourne, Grim Fandago, surprise LBP3, UC4 looks amazing. I'm gald they didn't show any games that are years out and stuck to mainly 2014/2015 titles.

All in all, pretty good. It would have been great had they not killed the pacing with Layden

IGN stream just said Sony showed 19 games (not including sizzle reels) and Microsoft showed 20 (not including sizzle reels).

Interesting.
