Sony E3 2014 Conference Thread

I thought Sony killed it. Exclusive after exclusive after early access after exclusive content.

The Vita part dragged just a bit in the middle, but otherwise solid with at least 4-5 bombshells.

In order, I'd say Sony, Ubisoft, MS, EA

This wasn't even bad in a Konami 2010, or Sony E3 2006 where you can glean funny moments from a trainwreck, this was a literal train wreck. So much cross-gen/multiplat/available on PC games that do nothing to get someone to buy a PS4. I guess there's the exclusive content, like TV shows and 4 days of exclusive access to a beta. Hooray.

Hyperbole much. What were you expecting? I'm dying to know.

Sony sucks at E3 conferences. Every year that I've been watching they trot out these people that no one cares about and then proceed to drone on and on and on about stuff I couldn't possibly give any shit about; one year could be wonder book, the other year could be Move, and this year it's their movie streaming stuff. That, or they'll elongate segments sucking out all the appeal it initially had.

Jesus man! Stop reading fake letters and MOVE. I didn't skip 24 for this!

As for the games announced, thanks to the leaks not many surprises.

No Man's Land looks cool.

Uncharted 4 was a nice surprise, but why Drake again? I thought the story was going to take place in the past. Oh well.

A Suda game? I'll wait for reviews I guess. The subject matter does not interest me.

Bloodborne is a wild card. I could like it or hate it. Need to know more.

Destiny looks like it's in pre-alpha. What's up with that game?

Only CGi for Bloodborne was the nail in the coffin for me... fuck.
This E3 is all goddamn CGi trailers and super early prototypes (like literally untextured shit, look at EA's conference).
Maybe we should've skipped this year's E3, try better next year, when people have stuff to show.

And then they close with a second tease of Uncharted, showing absolutely nothing of it, FFS.

This press conference was a boring waste of time. I think Microsofts new style of showing ONLY games for 90 minutes has spoiled me forever. It wasn't as though sony's had anything wrong with it but they still had to showcase all aspects of their business instead of just focusing on the only thing I was there to see - games.

It really comes down to this - 90 minutes of straight gameplay footage / trailers with 5-10 minutes within that 90 being brief announcements from talking heads versus 2 hours of talking heads with only 25 minutes of gameplay footage/trailers. MS had games to show and new titles to announce so that's what they did. Sony apparently couldn't lock up enough exclusive footage beyond destiny so almost a solid hour in the middle was devoted to a bunch of boring shit I didn't care about.

It started off okay and it finished on a high note but man oh man was I ever bored in the middle. Also kind of disappointed that project beast / blood borne had only a CG trailer- what happened that that leaked gameplay from last week ? I was looking forward to seeing that whole teaser. Instead we get CG that shows us next to nothing.

Where was the new footage / gameplay for the fall lineup ? Drive club didn't even get so much as a mention on stage. Another big issue- where was some footage of some of the announcements- why not have a proper sizzle real for grim fandango, even if it was the old PC version , just to remind people of what it was. Ratchet and Clank 1 getting a super HD re-release ? Awesome, how come I don't get to see it ?

It just reminds me that last year, MS also showed more games but due to how horrible their marketing was (never ever tell people what they want) people just recall how badly sony trounced them last year. There wasn't much difference this time around for sony but they couldn't spend 30 minutes blabbing about how shitty MS was because everything has been doubled back.

Another thing- sales of the PS4 must have slowed down a fair bit in the last 2 months because I was fully expecting a gloating figure of how 10 million people own one now. Yet there was nothing.

I am very much at the point now where I think E3 pressers should be 60 minutes long and that's it. Show me every game that is coming out for the rest of this year and announce all the big titles coming in the next 18 months or so. Wave good night, thank everyone for coming and boom, done.

I kind of set myself up for a fall on both MS and Sony though- I was hoping to see a new dead or alive announced and a new trailer for devils third and we got neither. 95% of the games shown off today everyone knew about. Some of those got leaked sure, but I wanted to be excited by things.

On the whole , these conferences just showcased 2 things- MS had to try and win over the fanbase they were rapidly losing and I think they committed a valiant effort that was clearly months in planning. Sony has already reverted to the PS3 era of not giving a fuck about people again. I was really thinking they'd have learned from watching MS last year that no one gives 2 shits about anything except videogames at E3. If you want to announce something that doesn't involve gaming- do a separate presser.

Or you know, have tastes different to the typical "hardcore" dudebro gamer. I don't like Shooters. Project beast might be cool but after watching the trailer at the conference I feel like I learned nothing about what it actually is besides another dark fantasy game from FROM. And I was never able to get into Dark Souls, so there's that as well.

ok, you have to be trolling. LOL No Man's Sky? ABZU? Stop, bro.

Oh plus, they announce a game that it is already on PSN, that is VERY cool! It's a small thing, that no one did before.

On gamescom they will show the Santa Monica game too!
wow they have A LOT coming! I wonder if those gifs that leaked about project Beast is the same game we saw today.. looked different art style, maybe another from software game?

The only thing that got me excited from Sonys conference was Playstation TV. The white PS4 is on my radar but still meh.

The bar is set low for Nintendo.

It's a tie for me. Sony had more games to show (including exclusives) but a lot of it was multiplats with exclusive content. Their presentation however was terrible. Horribly planned. MS had relatively fewer games to show, but the ones they did show made an impact, partly because they were able to maintain great momentum and pacing throughout.

Overall, 7/10 for both. Dissapointing E3 so far. I personally enjoyed MS's conference better.

My taste is great, I just don't like sequels on sequels on sequels, or games I can play elsewhere. I'm sorry that AC Unity was a refreshing take on the series, verses a rehashed Uncharted sequel where it'll be more of the same auto-platforming and senseless firefights. My taste isn't crap because I didn't lose my shit at all the sequels and rehashes, my taste is exquisite because I actually want a game with gameplay, not a game based off of a 30 second teaser.
Bran, pls start posting in the Game of Thrones thread.

I think both were basically a wash in terms of game content, Sony just kind of killed their momentum with non-game talk in the middle.

MS focused a lot more on 2014 than Sony IMO. Way too many 2015 games for Sony.

beyond the destiny stuff and the indie stuff I wasn't really impressed, everything else looked like more of the same we had seen in other confrences and nothing new. Uncharted and bloodborne were the let downs for me, they showed NOTHING about the game, and regardless of being captured on the ps4, the cutscene quality in the uncharted games have always been miles above the actual gameplay so you end up getting a generic setting and thats it. The order was sad, and should be burried next to ET at this point, and bloodborne just looked dark and brooding, but did nothing.

Anyone else think Magicka 2 looked really bad graphically for what is suppose to be a PS4 exclusive? Or maybe that was the player slowing down.

Sony showed a lot of great stuff but the pacing is throwing people off. I feel like a lot of people forgot what was shown in the first half.

there was too much stuff shown off.

i feel like if that middle part didn't happen and they just continued to show more trailers, every other game besides maybe 3-4 will get drowned out.

people can't even remember there's a suda51 game, or broforce, or entwined, or adzu.

abzu? adzu?

oh and magicka 2.

really really disappointing conference....especially considering how good last year's was.

That middle part where they talked about non-game stuff was just really bad...

You certainly didn't watch the same conference I did. Sony completely dwarfed Microsoft in the exclusivity department.

Someone counted, they both had 10.

Seriously some tinted glasses going on here.
Both conferences were alright in terms of games. Sony was boring as hell in the middle.

That thing about Far Cry 4 allowing you to invite a friend to play even if they don't have the game is an overlooked megaton. I doubt it's a one off.

Was this a Sony E3?

Felt like the Multiplat E3.

The second worst only due to EA.
Neither Sony or Microsoft were ready this year.

Sony conference - 7/10
MS Conference - 6/10

MS conference was well structured, but had very little to show. Sony had better games, but dragged through the middle. Their conference would've been much improved had they went for an hour and a half instead of 2 hours, and trimmed a lot of the business talk and TV stuff.

As long as Nintendo has the content, their fans should walk away with the most hype this year.

I thought this was easily better than MS. Not by a massive amount, but yeah. There was just more interesting stuff.

A Halo 1-4 collection isn't interesting, people. It's a nice thing, for sure, but it's just not very interesting. Sunset Overdrive seems really cool, but we've already seen that. And the rest was multiplats or useless CG.

Sony didn't exactly kill it either - I had hoped for some really cool announcements - but they had a lot of good stuff. The TV part brought it down a bit, but then they (as expected) ended it with Uncharted 4, which looks fucking amazing. Yeah, actual gameplay footage would have been nice, but there's no reason to believe it will look significantly worse than what we saw.

Out of 10:

MS: 7
EA: 4
Ubi: 7
Sony: 8

I'll say this, Sony's exclusives didn't appeal to me last gen, they aren't appealing to me in this current gen. Little Big Planet 3 doesn't appeal to me, The Order doesn't appeal to me, Uncharted 4 doesn't appeal to me. Felt very safe, that if you liked what Sony did in the past, you'll like what they're doing now.

this is how i feel too. The only exclusive that was truly good on the PS3 to me was TLOU. i've played most of sony's exclusives last gen and i just dont see myself playing their sequels this gen.

i dont like the order's small corridor, one monster, one playable character, and do stuff so you can say wow at the graphics type of thing TLOU spoiler:
reminds me of stuff like when ellie is hunting the deer
its a cheap way to make you say ooOoO dem graphics!

i'm truly disappointed there was no japanese rpgs. Not even a whiff of it. I think, after seeing the games of this E3, i'ma go on a long hiatus from it

You left out the Ratchet & Clank remake, but yeah.

Lined up like this, I much prefer Sony's showing of games.
Microsoft had better pacing though.
UbiSoft was alright, but not much interest me.
EA had nothing but concepts. Ugh.
I edited. Also, shouldn't have bolded Uncharted 4.

I think its the problem with a 2 hour conference. They should really trim it to 1.5 like the others.

For me, the conference was very underwhelming. Uncharted does look amazing, but it's a Fall 2015 title.. I think it all comes to the fact that Sony didn't show anything that would blow minds for this fall.

Between Sunset Overdrive, Forza and Halo Collection, I think software wise Microsoft got this year in the bag. I guess what some people were saying that 2015 will be the PS4's year (game-wise) ended up being true.

Yeah, hadn't thought of that too much- I guess MS has forza, Sunset Overdrive, and halo? And Sony has Driveclub and LBP?

Both seem really week exclusive holiday lineups to me, I guess we're getting Destiny, COD, and BF too. Seems like 2014 is just a rough year for AAA games on these new machines to be honest. Slightly disappointed, but I should have known.

When I heard Paradox Interative I let my imagination run wild. There was a second there where I thought they were about to put out a Grand Strategy on the PS4 or Vita or maybe Runemaster. I was pretty disappointed to see the Magika game, although it was a great announcement video, and I've never actually played Magicka.

The Order looks amazing. Seamless transition between cute scenes and gameplay. For a story-driven, cinematic single player game, it's as good as it can get now.

Uncharted 4 in-engine footage looks insane. Even better than the Star Wars Battlefront footage.

The NeoGAF shoutout. Did no one else smile big enough to bust a jaw bone??

I'm still hella-fuckin' new around here, but I thought NeoGAF, despite not being invited to E3 this year, was relevant enough in the video game industry that actual industry superpowers visit this place and have accounts and so on?

No TLG.
No Crash Bandicoot.
No Syphon Filter.
No God of War.
No showing from Sony London.
No showing from Quantic Dream.
No showing from Media Molecule.
No showing from Ninja Theory.

Was excited for some of the games and it had some really high highs, but waiting for all that shit above and getting none of it was a really shitty feeling.

really really disappointing conference....especially considering how good last year's was.

That middle part where they talked about non-game stuff was just really bad...

I actually thought the middle 30 minutes, with No Man's Sky was by far the highlight compared to the overall boring first and last 30 minutes.

Why? Without leaks we'd have seen exactly ZERO gameplay from Project Beast/Bloodborne. Where the hell was the gameplay in the conference video for that game when there was plenty of it in the Webm videos?

you call those 2 sec blurry gifs game-play?

the gameplay is not ready to be shown

End of day scores for me:

Microsoft: 8

Great pace, not much fluff, learnt from last year and showed pretty much all games. More new IP's would have been nice. Bit too much CG, more gameplay would have been nice.

Highlights for me being: Sunset Overdrive, Master Chief Collection (100 maps!), AC: Unity gameplay and Ori. Hnourable mentions: Crackdown, Scalebound.

EA: 4/10

Same old sports franchise sequels that I didn't care about. Battlefront early footage looked AMAZING. Too much concept stuff, not much substance. I got really bored part way through.

Highlights: Battlefront, Mass Effect, Criterion's new game.

Ubisoft: 8.5/10

Some great gameplay footage from stuff like AC: Unity and The Division, some great looking new IP's like Rainbow Six: Siege. Say what you will about Aisha, she kept the thing going and the pacing was alright. Developers got out on stage, it was generally good.

Highlights: AC: Unity, The Division, Rainbow Six: Siege, Far Cry 4.

Honourable Mentions: The fitness game, Valiant Hearts.

Sony: 7/10

Some great looking games, also a hell of a lot of unnecesary fluff that could have been cut down/removed entirely. Way too much time spent on TV and PS Network. Arkham Knight looked godly and Uncharted was jaw dropping. Did I mention No Man's Sky? Because it looks AMAZING!

Highlights: White PS4, Arkham Knight, No Man's Sky, Uncharted 4.

Honourable Mentions: GTA V remaster, Grim Fandango remaster.

Favourite moment of E3: Magicka trailer when the cat got zapped.

Games I am most looking forward to:

Rainbow Six: Siege, Halo Master Chief Collection, Far Cry 4, The Division, Sunset Overdrive, Uncharted 4, Arkham Knight, No Man's Sky, Battlefront, AC: Unity.

Overall though, I felt like this E3 so far has been average. Sony really disappointed with their strange emphasis on TV etc. especially after last year and MS' mocking. Microsoft definitely made an improvement with the focus on games. EA really dropped the ball, I don't think they needed a conference this year. Ubisoft won E3 for me personally. Too many game announcements were either remakes, remasters or ports. The games that were really exciting were all ones I ALREADY KNEW ABOUT, how new IP's got shown? Outside of indie games, the only ones I can think is Kamiya's new exclusive for Xbox and Rainbow Six: Siege. It's pretty damn late, stayed up to watch them all, but these are my current thoughts.

There weren't really any megatons and that is what disappointed me most.

Most of the stuff was sequels, remasters or games we already knew about/have seen.

yaaaawn. my gf said the little big planet segment made her sleepy. can't say i disagree. the numbers and entertainment stuff in the middle brought the presentation to a grinding halt. aside from some cool reveals, i thought sony's presser was on par with microsoft's--very mediocre.

Sorry dudes, Sony completely killed MS on this conference.

Between the Grim Fandango remake, Ratched & Clank 1 remake, Entwined, LBP3 and MOTHERFUCKING Bloodborne, poor MS didn't stand a chance.

To give MS credit though, Sunset Overdrive still looks like a shitton of fun, and whenever I get an XB1 I'm definitely picking up Horizon 2.

Excellent
Asides from the lack of ffvii
And poor stage production

If there's an inkling of that happening it'll probably be during SE's presentation.

Goddamn though, still can't get over how much of a let down Sony's conference was. Others touched up on it, but dat Vib Ribbon tease was especially fucked up. Library for the console looks so sparse when it comes out outta-the-box or good ol' Japanese games.

Guess I won't be getting a PS4 anytime soon after all.

I missed the beginning of the part where he said

"...And those who don't have the game can play along with you."

The stream went out. What was he talking about?

Far Cry 4, wasn't it? Probably something to do with online co-op. Can't remember him saying much else.

The only thing that really excited me was Bloodborne, and to a lesser extent, Uncharted 4. No Man's Sky looks cool, but being all procedurally generated makes me think the novelty will wear off quickly (hope I'm wrong).

Everything else was completely uninteresting to me.
Definitely hear ya, Bloodborne looks amazing, I love the setting. I just couldn't get excited for anything else.
