Sony E3 2014 Conference Thread

Yeah, a year ago all the talk was "20 PS4 exclusives in the first year". Whelp, maybe if you include some bad indie games.

1. Knack
2. Killzone SF
3. Resogun
4. Doki-Doki Universe
5. inFamous : SS
6. MLB : The Show
7. Hohokum
8. Helldivers
9. CounterSpy
10. Entwined
11. TLoU : Remastered
12. LBP3
13. Driveclub
14. Singstar

So let me get this straight

You want highly anticipated games to be bad just so you can laugh at all the people who are excited about those games?

Wow.

I didn't say bad, I said disappointing as in not living up to the hype. My point is that hyping up these titles is more likely to result in disappointment. Not saying that developers like Valve can't deliver, but it gets really tiring when people shit on games being shown without even knowing anything about them, but assume that these long awaited games will fulfill all their gaming desires.

The first major E3 since both consoles were released and people are having way too high of expectations. 2-3 years from now I think people will be more satisfied

I think people were expecting things to be a lot bigger than they actually were. This being the E3 right after a console launch people hyped them selves up to the point they couldn't get down and were thus disappointed. Though everybody should know the real big games don't come out till 2-3 even 5 years after the consoles have launched when people are building engines on architecture that isn't changing all the time and they have solid footing to go crazy. Considering the games shown, I was pretty blown away...even the GTA V upgrade was impressive. Either it's the younger generation that's self entitled or the 30-35 folks that are becoming old and senial way early but the games I grew up on in the 90's make everything out now pretty much look amazing.

Wow, I missed your post but you actually get it and half of the gamers on GAF clearly don't. Christ.

Should have been 30 minutes shorter cutting out Shawn Layden and the TV stuff. Trimmed some of the indie stuff too.

They beat MS with diversity and number of exclusive games. MS pretty much catered to the Xbox audience where Sony hit every demographic.

If you compare output Sony won this E3 handily.

If someone heavily edits the Sony presentation to just gameplay footage, it would be awesome. Such a huge variety of game styles.

We're really getting to see what second generation software PS4 games look like, and they're looking great. Destiny continues to look stunning. I've never been overly fond of the Batman games, but even I was impressed by Arkam Knight. Entwined looked lovely. When they said "If you use your Playstation app you can download the game now" I though, hey, I might as well. The future is here.

No Man's Sky wowed me like nothing else this E3. If it was from a AAA studio I'd have been impressed, but THAT coming from a small indie studio is mind blowing.

Bloodborne trailer didn't really do much for me, but I'm well past caring about pre-rendered trailers. But still, confirmation of the game was all I was after. They could have just put up a slide that said "New Souls game by FROM SOFTWARE" and I'd have been popping boners for days.

I found gallows humour in the fact that Bravia TVs got more mentions than the Vita. Poor little dude.

It's pretty easy actually. Just delete anything with Shawn Layden and Powers, and there you go, conference instantly made 10 times better.

Damn, do I buy a PS4 now within the next couple weeks, or just tough it out and wait til the Christmas bundles??

Decisions, decisions.

Wait for the white PS4 man.

I think both were basically a wash in terms of game content, Sony just kind of killed their momentum with non-game talk in the middle.

looking at those lists I would say we should all be happy, but apparently one company has to kill the other to make our gaming experiences more compelling

Please excuse if mention or posted already, but it looks like Grim Fandango will be coming to other platforms at some point

I just cannot get over the people in this thread saying Sony somehow TROUNCED MS or vice versa. I mean, did we watch the same fucking conferences. Sony's conference was boring as fuck, and MS's conference was full of CG with nothing to show. Both announced about the same number of games. I'd understand if certain people tilt a certain way due to certain games appealing to them, but anybody rating MS a 9 and Sony a 6 or rating Sony an A and MS a D is clearly devoid of any shred of objectivity. It's so painfully obvious who are fanboys in this thread. Both conferences were roughly equally dissapointing.

I agree with you. I think MS wins for me because the 2014 lineup appeals to me more. But both companies played to their fanbase. MS just had a better pace for the most part as well. Cool/expected stuff.

Leaks should not damage the contents of a presentation IMO.

But it does.
It's hard to get genuinely surprised when your stuff's been leaked weeks before.
MS shouldn't have announced Horizon 2 beforehand. MGSV trailer leak just before the E3 showing was unfortunate. Bloodborne leak was just plain tragic.

I think that if you went into E3 not knowing which console to get and watched all the conferences...well, you wouldn't be persuaded to jump in this year with either one.

its even, for 2014 its even, both systems are getting those 3rd party games

xbox one gets forza horizon
PS4 gets driveclub (why no trailer/release date)
Xbox one gets a remaster
PS4 gets a remaster
Xbox one gets sunset overdrive
PS4 gets Little big planet

2015 is when it gets different.

i liked both conferences but lol no price yet for ps now, its gonna cost $$$$, even the beta next month will cost money

You forgot Planetside 2.

Rest 2014
MS:
Forza Horizon 2, Sunset Overdrive, Halo Master Chief Collection (is Fable Legends 2014?)

Sony: The Last Of Us Remaster, Little Big Planet 3, Driveclub, Planetside 2.

Edit: damn it, I forget that The Order is 2015.

My favorite games from this E3 so far are from Ubisoft, AC Unity, The Division, Far cry 4 and believe it or not, Shape up!! (LOOKS incredibly fun) Also The Witcher 3 from CD project

Sony basically did laps around everyone else's conference today. It's a shame they sucked the win with the parts with the new SCEA guy and that tv dude.

Yeah, not only cut that section to address some people who can't look beyond pacing to see games, but also how do you give the new guy the hardest part?

My rankings:

Microsoft: B+. They had games, they had biggish games, they put them out one after another. It was well paced, they had surprises. I am more interested in the Xbone after this conference. A new Phantom Dust, fucking whaaaat? They also didn't try to make "exclusive content" mean anything. They didn't try to make "console debuts" mean anything. They knew what mattered.

man what? that had that shit pop up on everything & even said it a few times....

Since everyone else is doing it, here's my rundown / thoughts on the conference as a whole:

- Destiny looks very "meh". The visuals didn't really impress me, and the entire trailer felt very much like it desperately wants to be Halo, almost as though Bungie can't escape the shadow of their mega franchise. Not impressive, and actually disappointing given the hype the game had behind it months ago.

- The Order: 1886 looks absolutely rubbish. The visuals are stellar, but the gameplay just looks terrible. Hopefully there's much more to it than what was shown, because it appears to be a ho-hum third person shooter designed around scripted scenarios and quick time events, and the way it was all rolled out just seemed very drab and boring.

- Entwined looks nice, but there didn't appear to be much to that game. It looks like something that would be a neat 99 cent app to try for a few minutes, but I wouldn't pay $9.99 for it.

- InFamous DLC didn't really pique my interest, but I'm not a fan of this franchise. Maybe fans of the other games would be excited for this one?

- LittleBigPlanet 3 is the last thing I wanted to see today. Media Molecule has yet to make a truly good game, in my opinion, as each of their two existing designs is hindered in some ways. Tearaway lacked challenge and didn't actually feel like a solid platformer until the final area of the game, but it was the better design of the two. Little Big Planet has always felt like a sloppy, floaty mess of a platformer, and the gameplay makes it look like nothing has changed this time around.

- Bloodborne has absolutely piqued my interest, and the trailer looked incredible, but there wasn't much shown. The 2015 titles, of which there are many, don't do much for this conference, in my eyes, as they're basically glorified teaser trailers.

- Far Cry 4 is Far Cry. I honestly could not get even slightly excited for this game. I was bored just watching it play.

- Dead Island 2 had a terrible trailer. Why does this game even exist, exactly? The first game got a pretty damn mediocre reception overall.

- Magicka 2 is something I'm excited for, but the trailer wasn't impressive. I'm not sure how you'd do an impressive trailer for this title, but that wasn't it.

- Grim Fandango Remastered was announced. How hyped was I for that picture of Tim holding that letter? Not nearly as hyped as I would've been for a full-on trailer.

- Let It Die. Appropriate title for my feelings about this one.

- Abzu looks amazing. I'm psyched to try that out. I wasn't at all interested in Journey, but this one looks like a winner.

- No Man's Sky is, so far, one of the most impressive games I've seen at E3. The visuals, the concept, and the general design just seem incredible. Unfortunately, I doubt this game releases anytime soon, and by that I mean I bet we see it late 2015.

- Ratchet & Clank Remastered was announced, after the boring trailer for the movie. I have the HD Collection. Why would I need this?

- Mortal Kombat X looks fantastic. It's great to see so many new faces in the series. Hopefully, it's even better than the last game, which was excellent.

- The Last of Us Remastered is what it is. It doesn't excite me since the game just came out last year.

- Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain looks good, but I'm just done with that franchise. The story has become a nonsensical mess.

- GTAV Remastered was announced. Please see my The Last of Us Remastered comments.

- Batman: Arkham Knight got a new trailer, and the game looks good, though I think Rocksteady are losing sight of what makes Batman who he is. I hope this is the last one, and they move on to tackle a new IP.

- Uncharted 4: A Thief's End got a shiny new teaser. The only new info we got is that Nathan Drake is back. Shocking. This is actually the perfect game to end the conference, since it carries the general message across very well: Forget about 2014, just think of how awesome 2015 will be!

Missing in action: DriveClub, Final Fantasy XV, Kingdom Hearts 3, and The Last Guardian. Vib Ribbon was teased twice for seemingly no reason. PS Vita got scraps.

My overall score for Sony: 5/10. Next year, focus more on the year at hand, and also improve the flow and presentation of the event.

Not a bad assessment, I feel mostly the same way. Lets see what Nintendo brings to the table tomorrow.

You mean the same Uncharted 4 that started with "This footage was captured from a PS4 system" before it even began? Ok.

I couldn't care less if it was in game or CG or somewhere in between, but what the heck is "captured from a PS4" even supposed to confirm? My feeble brain could say it's just CG playing on a PS4. And captured.

But again, I don't care, that's the one surefire game I'm hyped about. Go go go Uncharted.

When it comes to MS's conference versus Sony's conference, I enjoyed both, but Sony left me feeling like some new stuff had been shown off, yet there was plenty in the wings still waiting (where was Rime? The Witness? Drive Club? All of the other indies?) whereas Microsoft was kinda scraping the bottom of their upcoming playlist (CGI for Phantom Dust and Crackdown? Pah).

Seriously. There are so many confirmed PS4 games that didn't get even a moment of screen time today. Can't say the same for Xbox One.

Wow alot of you guys are really playing this down, the massive list of games I have now to look forward to is amazing (and this thing hasn't even been out for a year..)

These lists are simply my opinion

AAA Stuff
Uncharted 4
Batman Arkham Knight
Blood Borne
No Mans Sky
NHL 15
Witcher III

[Hyped
Order 1886
DriveClub
LBP 3
Rainbow Six: Siege
The Division
Abzu
AC Unity
Far Cry 4
TLOU Remaster
GTA V Remaster
Dragon Age Inquisition

Will wait for more footage
Star Wars Battlefront
Dead Island 2

Only thing missing for me was Fallout 4 I would have blown my load had that been announced.

it sorta saddens me that so few on GAF seem to know who Brian Michael Bendis is

he was the primary architect of the Ultimate Marvel universe which is largely what the movies have drawn from

that part needed to be presented differently, like:

  1. Hey, I'm the guy behind all the all the awesome Marvel stuff lately
  2. Sony Pictures TV makes all kinds of stuff you people enjoy: like Hannibal and Breaking Bad
  3. It is a natural fit for Sony's media empire to make a few things for PS
  4. By the way, this is all free with PS+
Could have been better received.

It's pretty easy actually. Just delete anything with Shawn Layden and Powers, and there you go, conference instantly made 10 times better.

I actually didn't mind all the network/hardware talk. Was interested to hear more about Playstation Now, Playstation Vita TV and Project Morpheus. I just don't think that the E3 keynote conference is the place to do this.

The TV / Powers stuff was awful. Especially how long it went on for. Game me flashbacks to the horrific Xbox reveal.
