IGN is all like:

Meh, I really don't think IGN is vindicated here. It was still shoddy journalism on display. It was reported as "official" when it clearly isn't. But it's also silly to act as though the insinuation that the game is no longer in development is laughable nonsense when you have nothing substantial to show to prove otherwise.

Exactly.

Listen, I agree with you 100%. But you know that IGN views the lack of presentation at E3 as vindication for their claims, whether they admit it publicly or not.

I understand your position and thank you for your post. Yes, I am fully aware that TLG got stuck pretty bad and had to be re-worked, maybe multiple times, but since this is now one of the most famous games and people have been asking for it for years then it is in Sony's best interest to release it, if only for the sake of honour. If they were to cancel TLG now they would lose face and Microsoft, Nintendo and other companies would immediately start their campaign of "we keep our promises, our games are real". So, they can't really afford to cancel it, they will work on it and release it and maybe they will not get their money's worth until the 3rd re-release for PS6, but they will still work on it and have it released one day.

Jesus

This is a new stage of grief, between shock and denial... Insanity

I think you vastly overestimate the importance of this title. I think the reaction of the game-playing populace at large to the sad news that The Last Guardian has been cancelled would be one of "What is/was The Last Guardian?"

GAF just went down a few degrees because that was COLD. Just like all that crow you cooked for Kev.

I was really hoping to see it in some form this year. Lost an avatar bet because of it. Please do not judge me by my avatar.

Hell yeah I'll judge you by your avatar!

:p... mostly

Edit: I didn't exactly expect to see it at the conference tonight, but still... maybe it's just me, but it feels telling.

That's not to excuse IGN's "journalism", but I feel like the outlook isn't super great for the game >.>

You'd think with the whole IGN scandal that they would at least show the game's title and logo during the conference if it was still coming. That would at least be something.

Given that we received an outright answer stating it was still in development, I don't think there's much question. It's still in development, but that development is clearly not going well. And the fact that they still had nothing to share? Man, who could blame people for getting pessimistic?

Look on the bright side, Last Guardian faithful. This most likely means the game will have a full shift to next-gen, like XV. There's something to be said for that, right? Right?

Firstly, what I was angling at is was your original post insinuating that atheism is directly analogous to not believing in the existence of The Last Guardian? Because that's what I took from it.

Secondly, all fun and jokes aside, I don't think that it's impossible to believe that the project still exists in the sense that there is some money and personnel making -- or at least attempting to make -- progress. However, we've seen projects enter into development hell before. Sometimes, they eventually resurface. Sometimes, they are even completed. However, after a certain period of time with nothing to show for it, I think you have to expect that some people are going to become a little pessimistic about the outlook of the project.

Maybe some of us are bad people by having some fun with the situation. But the flip side is that "how can you not believe that this is still a thing when people are telling you that it's still a thing!? What prove could you possibly need!? There's a person telling you that it's still in development! Case closed!" is also not a strong position here. You know how you silence the people laughing? You show the game. You put a controller in someone's hand and let them play it. Barring that, you can really only let those having a hearty laugh have their fun and hope they eventually get their comeuppance.

Yes I agree with almost all of this. The only place we probably won't see eye to eye is the highlighted part. Since they are developing the game and they actually know its status, its not just a "strong position" its the only position. Any other position is opinion, rumor or otherwise.

Again I agree with what you say later in as far as silencing the laughter. Hands on is that golden moment and I'm sure if Sony could have done that by now they would've. They can't and I'm not making excuses for them either.

I don't get this part. How can they not have a trailer? A teaser? An ANYTHING?! I think we saw some teasers of games that will come out in 2016(hell, 2013 E3 KH3 tease to release date is ~3 years min) so showing something waaaaaay off isn't abnormal. I honestly don't care strongly for this game but what the HELL are they doing? 'Full development' my ass - it's obviously treading water.

Yeah, that development is utterly tortured, and it when it's released it will not be a single, clean vision, but a mish-mash of years of different evolutions and conflicting ideas all slammed together.

Why did they have to give it a name? So much harder to admit it is dead. I could have walked away from trico in an instant but The Last Guardian has me to emotionally involved.

Please Sony stop stringing us along, you are playing with our hearts here.

At this rate, they won't ever get to the Stage 5: Acceptance. Its an eternal cycle of 1 to 4 then go back again to 1. LOL.

We're using the 7 stage model to accommodate their behaviour, sadly few are making it out the other end.

TLG-GAF is like this:

Sony should have at least ended on a helpline number if nothing else.

It happens a lot in development when someone asks me how my current assignment is coming along. Now, my assignments are smaller in scale than a video game, but let's say a big project might take me as long as a month. Two weeks in, I'm asked "how are you doing?" I say "I'm about 50 percent done." Sometimes, that estimation is wildly inaccurate. Maybe it's because I've been distracted. Maybe it's because the project is bigger and more complex than we've all assumed. But either way, let's just assume that I'm not actually on target.

Now, as the deadline approaches, it's very likely that someone is going to want to see something. Now, in my case, I will say that the project is indeed very real. I'd certainly get fired if I had literally nothing to show for it. But I do think sometimes things go off the rails. And sometimes, other projects will wind up taking priority. Now, imagine you're not my boss, but our client. Can you understand doubting our progress when I haven't actually demonstrated that there's a light at the end of the tunnel for this project? It doesn't matter that I have source code written and that I can assure you that some progress has been made. Maybe if I could just show some controlled examples of the interface in action, you'd be convinced. But as of now, I've got nothing. Do you understand why our assurance that the project will be completed isn't very reassuring to the client?

I'd like to think these developers are more competent than the Duke Nukem team, but then again given what I've seen from SE lately that's very likely misplaced faith.

Man.... Fuck. Sony needs to get this game out the door ASAP. It's been far too long. :(

When you can watch multiple console generations of games release during the lifetime of one game, and witness whole franchises birth, thrive, decay and die, you have to think something about the game's development is fundamentally broken.

I just woke up and saw this thread title. Laughing my head off and still half asleep lol - what a weird feeling.

(I really thought this was the year)

Im in...... :'( I had a glorious OP typed up with pictures and trailers and hype for the "inevitable re-reveal" I had envisioned so much. When I had to delete the entire thread before it ever saw the light of day it killed me so much on the inside.

Wow, as a Computer Engineering major I cannot tell you how good of an analogy this is.

I guess we can use this good old GIF again, it never gets old (literally)

I hope they will show The Last Guardian at Gamescon, since I am going there this year :)

I'm just going to assume that the scope of the game was too complex for PS3 and possibly even PS4. It's like ICO + a titan constantly on screen, and with the demands of decent physics, high resolution and frame rate on top of that. And then the insane attention to detail that they're known for that probably makes it even longer to finish the game.

My guess is that for the past few years members of the team were put on different projects and this has been sitting on the backburner. Possibly Chico hasn't ever been able to do much more than crunch barrels and hop on crumbling platforms since the trailer...

So not so much a funeral - more like comatose *thumbs up

And now a game from one of our studios in Japan. It's one of those games that really stands out from the crowd. A beautiful, elegant artistic creation.

The Last...*cough* excuse me, something in my throat. The last game on our list is The Last Ga *crowd erupts* Wow, thank you guys. The Last Garden.

I mean honestly they released SotC at 18 fps, I sincerely doubt this was a frame rate or resolution issue.

This is a game I am very certain was the problem of having a concept but don't know how to make it fun or even appealing.

If it ever does release, I wanna say there will be very little resembling the first trailer we saw.

"It was a fun week of Last Guardian news," Rohde said with a smile, recalling the game's rumored cancellation earlier this week. "At PlayStation, it's really important to us to make sure that the creative process works. And in this case, [game director Fumito Ueda] has created something that's great, it's just going to need some time. We'll show it when it's ready."

I don't know how something could be in a state where you can't take a couple of quick screenshots and throw us a bone, but there it is.

To be fair, best Bonsai growing simulator out there... ;)

Sure. I understand where your coming from here. Again I'd like to make my position clear. Like the rest of us, I don't have any knowledge to share beyond what is out there in the public domain, I am just a fan not a Sony Employee. So with that in mind I'd like to reiterate that I'm also not making excuses for them not having shown any progress (screens/video whatever) of what we would assume should be ready to be shown.

Here's the catch. If the title has been moved to PS4 or has been ordered from higher-ups to be both a PS3 and PS4 title. Serious reworking may be taking hold, I don't know. Again I'm speculating as much as the next person. Any number of legitimate reasons could exist why the project now might now have an even longer lead time than the original development hell it went through while Ueda was still there.

The reality stands that we aren't privy to whats going on over there. Sure its been far too long in development and its obvious that some sort of development hell has occurred. But Sony have had the opportunity to kill this thing off many times over but have insisted its development continues. Knowing the growing anger/frustration with fans would you continue to 'lie to your customers' as some are suggesting Sony is doing? It just doesn't make much sense.

I feel like I've said this a dozen times over but my point still stands. Nothing to show right now (regardless of circumstance) does not = dead. I would say now that the PS4 is an actual thing and devs are getting there heads around it we should give it another year at least. If Sony have literally nothing to show by that point they may have to make a tough decision and a public announcement so they can move on from the bad PR mess this is causing. Because yes, people can't and won't wait forever.

really, sony could only redeem themselves in the eyes of consumers if they commit public sodoku
