Sony E3 2014 Conference Thread

Indeed. Sony left out alot of games: Deep Down, Rime, Santa Monica's work, etc. Heck, even Driveclub wasn't shown in the conference for some reason.
lily embargo, shthe new thatcompany game, quantic dream, studio london, shadow of the beast, Clap hanz, guerillia, studio cambridge, Frictional Games's soma, too much really.

If we're adding exclusive console debuts (like No Man's Sky), you can also add:

Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number
The Talos Principle
Broforce
Abzu
Let It Die
Magicka 2
Ratchet and Clank remaster

Let it Die is full exclusive, isn't it? I thought they said "only for Playstation"

Pretty good conference..had me fairly hyped throughout.

I want that white ps4, although its sweet that I can buy the controller separate.

Tons of fantastic looking indies and they set the stage about them being "first" on ps4.

GTAV, UC, LBP3 all surprises (not the first two but excitement just seeing them)

More Infamous Second Son gaming goodness, and they're doing it right by making it standalone since I'm sure they know some people sold their game after platting it.

No Mans Sky looks amazing.

Seeing the lycans in action in Order aas fantastic.

All in all, I enjoyed the hell out of the show.

ah ok, new weapons, new maps, new missions, CLASSES, THE ABILITY TO PLAY ONLINE CO-OP WITH SOMEONE WHO DOESN'T OWN THE GAME is "exclusive horse armour dlc. Ok

:D

No, you're not bias at all.

Yeah that play with a person who doesn't own it was cool. Still not interesting enough for me to think it wasn't a boring-ass conference.

Instead of all the pointless fighting and bickering over letter grades, can't we just agree that both presentations were pretty much equal to each other. Both had games we want to play, both had downsides (boring pacing/numbers for one too many cgi trailers and 2016 games for the other).

I wouldn't agree with that at all, but both events were solid at least. Sony just had a larger amount of sheer content to show as far as games where concerned. Sunset OD is the one piece of original material coming out of the MS that showed up at at E3 and seems genuinely exciting, otherwise, they had a Halo compilation and a few CG trailers of upcoming games that could go either way, one which seems to be an XB1 remake of Crackdown, which is cool, I will play that, but was hoping for an actual Crackdown sequel. The game from the Limbo team looks great, too, no doubt.

It's early, I'm hoping Nintendo had a great showing, I really want more Zelda and/or Metroid, but between the MS and Sony shows, I'm kind of at a loss to understand how anyone would think Sony doesn't get the nod this year between the two.

Sony had a lot of good games but presentation wise they got stomped, microsoft just showed game after game. Sony's middle section was godawful. Still they had the best exclusives of e3 so far for me, bloodborne omg.

What I wonder, where was Driveclub?
Granted they showed it at the PS4 reveal event and the following E3 but we haven't heard anything since, given that it was pushed back a whole year you would think they would have something new to show.

I'm also curious how it will fare against The Crew.

But then you're aware that this is an entirely subjective opinion. A few minutes ago you were saying that it was a "fact"

You were saying that MS got totally ecplised which I consider just factually wrong

I was just joking. Both fans got what they wanted, it's just that many people were expecting Microsoft to blow them away with megaton third party exclusives. The biggest and only third party exclusive they showed was ScaleBound. What they had was way too many third party announcements. You had Tomb Raider, Witcher 3, The Division, Call of Duty, Assassins Creed, and Evolve. Then the typical trio of xbox exclusives. There was not enough for what it was hyped in terms of exclusive offerings for non ms fans.

I am really surprised by the amount of weight Sony is throwing behind Bungie. At this point, I can't see a reason why anyone would want to buy Halo 4 Destiny on an Xbox. This will certainly be an experience to watch. Sony banking squarely on 3rd parties for this holiday season. I wouldn't be surprised to see a GTAV PS4 bundle and exclusive ad agreement either and if that happens then they really don't need a blockbuster 1st party title this Fall.

We're getting the last of us and drive club right? Not to mention little big planet 3 right in times for the holidays. Sony just announced three games this e3 that would make it in time for 2014. The last of us, that indie fish and bird loving game, and little big planet 3. Not to mention any third party indie that might release this year.

See the upside of now owning both the xbone and the ps4 is that I can own the exclusives of xbox. But every other game, including those that xbox has timed exclusivity on, I will wait for ps4. Because it'll play better and look better almost guaranfuckingteed. If I had a capable pc I'd play those on there. But I don't.

Sunset Overdrive looks fun as all hell though. Looking forward to that..

Yeah that play with a person who doesn't own it was cool. Still not interesting enough for me to think it wasn't a boring-ass conference.

I think the "free co-op for friend" is pretty revolutionary on multiple levels. It is a good way to persuade one's friends to the game and, from the developer's point of view, is extra visibility in the PS4 community.

Apart from the powers section, the conference was exciting for me in terms of surprises and games shown, and is far from being "boring-ass".

E3 this year was very solid. Microsoft showed just games and sometimes it felt like E3 2013 part 2 with so many games just re-appearing, but that's okay, this shows that Microsoft did their homework and that is something good! No "wow" moments, but didn't screw up!
No WOW moments but no Wunderbook TVTVTV moments as well.

Sony brought up the usual stuff. I've felt that they lost several opportunities to give a great show, but in overall felt almost the same as MS, they did not go big, but did not fall short.
It had its WOW moments although it had its Wunderbook TVTVTV moments.

If they show X, they win automatically for me. I need a JRPG.

Now, this just summarizes who will win E3 this year for me!
I am really cheering for Nintendo to blow everything up with all the Hype they built. MS and Sony are in that moment where they are doing their own thing and keeping their pace, leaving the spot to anybody that wants to blow our minds.
So yeah, Id rather to having Nintendo blowing my mind than having just a 'solid' E3 this year.

I miss Jack Tretton. :(

Pretty good show (Bloodborne and No Man's Sky were the highlights), but I'm a little bummed that nothing really surprised me- and I figured by now we would get some actual gameplay from Uncharted 4, so that was disappointing.
Adam Boyes section was great... and I know I've been spending too much time on GAF because for a moment I honestly expected a letter from a GAFer asking for Shenmue 3, transitioning to a SEGA logo and a trailer. :p

Spending time on an 'original TV show' seemed like an old Microsoft move and left a bad taste in my mouth. I think I'm getting burned out by this whole superhero craze.
I know they need to try promoting what is bound to be a big financial investment, but meh... couldn't they have used that time to plug a trailer (even a dreaded CG! one) for another upcoming exclusive?
I respect this whole "we'll show stuff when it's ready" philosophy, but considering their vast stable of WW Studios productions going on, would it really hurt to show a few more future projects (i.e. a teaser for GG's new game- which, according to Shinobi, was actually made)?

I'd give both MS and Sony shows a B. Both had their small offenses (MS using PS4 footage of The Witcher 3, Sony having a TV exec up there pimping), but both had solid material.
A lot of games shown- both multiplat and exclusive. As painful as it is to say now, the day after their conferences, I'm already excited for E3 2015. :/

Sony had a lot of good games but presentation wise they got stomped, microsoft just showed game after game. Sony's middle section was godawful. Still they had the best exclusives of e3 so far for me, bloodborne omg.

It's a catch 22 for Sony though. Either they say nothing about PS Now and stealth launch PSTV and everyone bitches about them not hyping up the new services, or they include it in the conference and everyone bitches because they aren't games.

The Powers stuff and all was useless, but the R&C movie + game was worthwhile, PS Now talk was worthwhile, and the PSTV announcement was worthwhile. Boring? Sure. But stuff many of us will have interest in as it all goes live.

Instead of all the pointless fighting and bickering over letter grades, can't we just agree that both presentations were pretty much equal to each other. Both had games we want to play, both had downsides (boring pacing/numbers for one too many cgi trailers and 2016 games for the other).

Because that's false equivalency bullshit. Microsoft had a good show. A really good show by the standard they've set the last few years. They dug deep into their future catalog to make it happen.

Meanwhile Sony announced more games, just as many exclusives in 2014 and 2015, partnerships with rapidly growing indie publishers with Paradox and Devolver and new hardware/game services details. They did that without likely even touching on a good chunk of their 2015 lineup or pimping already blown out 2014 titles (imagine if Sony gave as much time to Driveclub as MS gave to Sunset Overdrive).

Sony basically said "this is what we've got for the next 12 months". MS said "here is what we have for the next 18-24 months". Meanwhile Sony still showed more. That isn't equal.

In fact, it's just like last year when MS needed a Halo 5 trailer, Quantum Break, and a Black Tusk tech demo they've already killed to pad their show while Sony stuck entirely with games at the time expected in the system's first 12 months (prior to The Order sliding to early 2015). They didn't even show LBP3 last year.

MS didn't spend a ton of time defending evil as fuck DRM and NFL partnerships. They showed off more games. But the same borrowing from the future tactics to pad their show was still present. Crackdown 3 is probably going to be at 3 E3's now. Halo 5 definitely will be. Scalebound likely will be as well. Meanwhile the flagship 1st party studio between MS and Sony, Naughty Dog, unveiled Uncharted 4 at E3 this year and it will release either just before or not long after it's second E3.

What a dance some of you are doing with the goalposts. First, indies are not games. Then MS announces a few, and they are suddenly granted game status and welcome into the hardcore community, Finally, hours later, sad-eyed indies are cast once more out of the colony when Sony shows a bit too many of them. They can stay out in the cold with those dastardly F2P titles (24 in the next 12 months), which are also stripped of proper game status and citizenship in the hardcore community.

Absolutely ridiculous. Sony brought the games, more than you, I, or anyone else can probably, reasonably, play in a generation. On top of that, they managed to squeeze in two new hardware announcements, a new bundle, and a bunch of information on media and services. Some serious reality checks are needed. That Edge and Extremetech article are spot on: MS had their chance to bring the games and they brought the usual fare and some B-tier Japanese exclusives that their core audience is suddenly, supposedly, fapping over (because in reality there is nothing else to be excited about that was not expected).

Serious lack of new aaa ip. I felt like I was watching a conference for ps3.5. I get that companies are incentivized to stay with safe bets but the sequel frenzy is boring for gamers. You'll just get fatigue.

You could say the same thing about the Sony conference..
They were both extremely similar conferences.
..Besides the whole media section of the Sony conference...

Both conferences had fan serving typical exclusives. Some new unique IP. Some Japanese exclusives. Some indie exclusives. Some third party exclusive content. And a bunch of third party game showings.

Expected... Destiny Bundle already #5 on hourly best sellers at Amazon.

http://www.amazon.com/best-sellers-video-games/zgbs/videogames/

PS4 will have a great September sales.

I doubt we will see X1 on top in the US again short of *maybe the new Halo release month, or a fire-sale. I expect that $399 tag to only keep them limping along, hopefully outpacing the Wii U, and nothing more. I was right about Titanfalls month, and I expect to be right about this, as well.

Why are you so angry?

Only difference was one conference was hyped, the other not so much. But the thing they both share is that leaks hurt them immensely.

Christ. I just went through the EG liveblog of the event and got up to the maligned Powers section. Times covered: 03:26 - 03:29. Three minutes. Out of an entire conference.

And yes, they had to launch their hardware/services *somewhere*. A little different to Microsoft, who are effectively doing one platform and have canned their hardware extra support.

Where were Everybody's Gone To The Rapture, The Witness and Rime? Are none of these games at E3?

Something like 3 minutes a segment for Sony to do things in. I would assume they are going to get given a chance to shine elsewhere. Either after the show or in future conferences.

I'm not sure why they announced the bundle at e3. Seems like a bad move that could limit some sales over the summer.
I think they make the Theater exposition just to two things:

+ Destiny Bundle
+ GTA V Announce

Most people I talk are thinking both games are exclusives.

Haven't read anything on this thread, as I went to bed without watching it live. I just got around to watching the keynote, and all I can say is:

I friggin' loved everything, goddamn. What a press conference. Highlights for me were:

- No man's sky (best of E3 for me)
- Uncharted
- The Order

It was amazing watching Boyes reading all that fan mail, and you could feel everybody on stage actually enjoying what they were doing.

9/10

Sure. I'd agree completely with those statements, but it doesn't really summarize the differences, which did exist.

1. Sony had more indies. A lot more. And from pretty noteworthy studios who have delivered high end games before.
2. Sony didn't even dig into the majority of their worldwide studios or probably even their late 2015 lineup (except maybe Uncharted 4). Microsoft was digging into their 2016 catalog to match exclusive content shown. That's a pretty telling factoid and, to me at least, the real differentiation here. MS doesn't have enough 1st party/exclusive software and are showing us long term projects super early to make us think they do.

I must admit, I'm a little surprised by people's response to Sony's and MS's conference. Tonally and presentation-wise, I think MS had a good conference. The pacing was nice, Phil was humble and brief, and the format was what gamers usually say they want to see. And looking back on some of the E3s of the past, it seems that MS's presentation is always good. The main sticking point for most of those past conferences and this conference is the quality and/or quantity of content. I always try to look at E3 from a bird's eye view across all of the conferences and use that to paint of picture of where the industry is at as a whole and where these companies fit in relation to me and other consumers.

I look at every conference because potentially not only are you looking at multiplatform games that will likely show up on your consoles of choice (provided you're not on a Nintendo platform), but you can also identify trends and strategies that your respective console might adopt. So while a Witcher 3 gameplay trailer may go over well at MS's or Batman over at Sony's, we know they'll be on both. With that said, we're getting a lot of sequels, but these titles are looking very good.

When I look at indies, I always see that as a wash ultimately. Show me a Rime, and I'll show you an Ori. Show me a Witness, and I'll show you an Inside. You can go tit for tat like that for hours I'm sure and ultimately when its all said and most of, if not all, will jump ship to the other side. Factor in the fact that it will be near impossible to play all of them eventually...who can afford or have the time for them afterall. Indies always feel like a wash to me.

As far as trends go, we're seeing some experiments with Far Cry's ticket system (wherein your friends can play without owning the game). We're seeing some cross-gen cross platform save updates with GTAV. 343 has some interesting ideas with playlists for Halo ports. These could make for some interesting trends in the coming years.

Once you've taken all the multiplats, indies, and presentational flare out of the meeting. You're left with the exclusive content at the end. No one is going to be thinking about pacing or little quips execs made at the competition when it comes down to playing the games.

Looking at MS, I find their first party studios lacking. Halo 5 will be big for sure, but Lionhead's Fable Legends looks like a good conceptually, but from the demo the execution leads me to believe that the game will not fair well critically. Going by combat in Fable in the past, they normally lacked depth. This game looks like individual combat will be just as simple, with some basic hooks for teamwork. In the coming months, we need to see some depth. This franchise has been headed down, imo, over the years and I'm not sure this one will save it just yet. Microsoft first party seems poised to be what it was been last gen (Fable, Gears, Halo, Forza). They've padded their lineup with games like Sunset Overdrive which for me is the premiere exclusive for this Fall on either console and in future are relying on Phantom Dust, Scalebound, and Crackdown. Crackdown is like Fable, in a sense, each addition has served to lessen the franchise. While there's always hope for any game, this game certainly has a lot of proving to do. All I could think about when I saw Scalebound was 'this will not sell.' Outside of not liking the artstyle...I know Platinum is in a league of their own and an acquire taste for most. I actually think this probably a taste of a CG trailer being tamer than the actual gameplay will end up being. I never played the original Phantom Dust, and I think this serves as risky move for MS...but one they should definitely take if its as good as some folks seem to claim. But I still wonder if this game, will resonate with people. These are games that have traditionally been lost in the shuffle for various reasons. Plus with no Japanese support, I suspect these games will struggle to find a sizeable audience. They definitely need to launch in the off season. Sunset Overdrive was easily the game of the show for them in my opinion. It wasn't CG and the gameplay looked fun and showed well. But SSO is much like TitanFall in my eyes...I think its sequel will find a home on PS4. The roadmap for MS looks very predictable for the next 2 to 3 years.

Sony pacing wasn't as strong as MS's. Their tone wasn't always as agreeable (though I find it all inconsequential). Their indies didn't show as well as MS's, but then as I said indies are a wash. The Order looks magnificent and while I have faith in RAD; with folks still thinking their game is basically a movie, I realize this game will just have to prove itself when people get their hands on the finished product. It garners enough attention visually that people will follow just to see something new on it, so if it is as good as I think it will be and it comes to show, people will take notice. LBP has its audience, so the arguments for it are well founded. Its no SSO, but its something for Fall 2014. The big thing here is that Mm didn't seem to be making it. So they've met their 'quota' for an LBP on every PS platform now lol and Mm can work on the next big thing. UnCharted looks unreal. The impact of this game won't be fully realized til next E3, but it was in-engine which beats CG. This and the order showed the potential for graphics for sure. Let it Die had me scratching my head. It looked like Manhunt, meets Resident Evil, meets Bushido Blade. That's on a level with Scalebound and Phantom Dust to me. It'll likely have its audience, but it'll be small. With all the exclusives that had some in-engine visuals or gamplay, I expected Bloodbourne to follow suit given the leaks. The big takeaway to me, was how little they had to show from their other studios to remain competitive at this show with MS. No media molecule, no guerrilla, no sony santa monica, no sony bend, no insomniac ratchet, no polyphony, no quantic dream, no japan studios.

E3 is about giving gamers more information about where gaming stands now, and in the near and sometimes far future. You're meant to take the information you've collected over the past months and add this new information to form a view of where these companies want to take you. Considering this, I think Sony is far and away in the best position. People will grade conferences, but after this week is over; its back to games. And the games that will come out first over the next coming months will be best on PS4. That familiar narrative starts up now. They've wisely got folks tuning into Destiny now. That'll be a big influx of gamers to Playstation before MS gets a chance with SSO. They've got a big push for TLOU and PSNow for late summer. There will be a lead up with Playstation between now and Destiny's launch. The indie titles they've announced earlier will likely be hitting around this same time. I expect games like Loadout and Planetside 2 to make a nice splash on consoles. All of this is buying their studios time to polish and have their games mature and ready to show the next go-round. By 2015, most of Sony will finally have all of its gears turning. MS and Sony always have another E3 to "show off" at; so you can't show your full hand in one go. Sony looks to have more opportunities to show new games than MS in the future. As this industry marches forward, its going to become more expensive for MS to attempt to pull moves like SSO and TF. I think MS's best days are 2014 and 2015, maybe 2016 when Gears and Crackdown have a chance of landing, but by then I think the Sony machine is going full steam and a lot of those timed exclusives have found their way across the stream.

And we still have Gamescom coming up.

The most underrated megaton of the show for me is Playroom DLC for broadcast!
Sony acknowledge pornPlayRoom as a broadcasting app is huge!

The entire half-hour section with Shawn Layden was awful. Should have been cut.

Why? Because all the sudden Sony has to have a solely GAMES-GAMES-GAMES conference? Sony have always talked about stuff whether it was good or not. The only change they should have done, was put all of it at the start of the conference and then had the games roll out.

Unfortunately, they didn't show anything I was hyped for, I mean nothing.... the UC4 trailer was nice, but it was nothing really....LBP surprise was nice, but that is more for my kids than anything.... My love for jRPGs is going to kill me this gen. I think I'm at least 2 years off from finally seeing anything jRPG on PS4, so I guess it's F2P city until then... That is why does Sony hate the VITA so much, that sizzle reel was like shoving a metal plate of slop for food under a jail cell door.....

Personally, I'm underwhelmed by all off it. Standard sequels of games I don't play. MS rehashing a franchise that seems tired to me. Sony nothing really but Bloodborne (even if that's pretty epic).

Top Bottom
