The Treehouse Live Format is the Future of E3

The extended coverage Nintendo is giving all of their games with their localization team is completely engaging. I'm being sold on stuff I probably wouldn't have paid too much attention to initially by just watching and listening to a bunch of not-PR people enjoying the games and digging really deep mechanically into what's going on in a long form as opposed to what we've seen before where a website team or something is playing a few minutes of dozens of games at a clip and giving very short preview information.

Does anybody else think this format is going to be copied next year? Maybe from the big boys like Sony or MS or just some other publishers.

absolutely brilliant. Nintendo totally nailed E3 this year. Their direct was humurous and concise and the Treehouse thing gives you a real feel for the new games.

this is just brilliant, i never felt so engaged in an E3 show like this. I hope this format is here to stay and will be copied by more houses.

good job nintendo

Going to repost from the other thread:

Nintendo Treehouse Live is the best thing that happened to Nintendo's E3 ever. Not even overreacting here. We NEVER would have gotten a look this indepth into a game before like with Xenoblade just now. Maybe some 10 minute videos from press outlets and the usual hand ons.

I'm really sad I can't watch everything live, but NeoGAF will probably tell me what I missed in the individual threads.

It's the best thing to do IF you want to really show some gameplay.

I really love the Treehouse streams. They are even more epic than the Digital Event, if that's possible.

I hope so. These extended demos are amazing. We never would have gotten such a good look at Xenoblade Chronicles X if it was just the standard format of letting the media handle the demos.

Sure. Maybe scrap the press conferences when they're at it. I mean, was there really a difference between the press conferences and "digital event" when it comes to attention? I don't really think so. The one big difference was the bill.

But that means publishers will have to start showing games that are actually ready to be announced rather than 2 years off with a CG trailer.

Definitely. I would love to see Sony and Microsoft do this too and be engaged and understanding the gameplay, mechanics and story from their games.

Yeah, Nintendo is crushing this E3, easily, and this is a big part of why.

It won't help for the publishers that only have trailers and pretend-gameplay to show, though.

I agree, I'd just avoid to split the announcements between digital event, minute, treehouse...a little confusing. but overall, they are doing great!

It's non-stop game content. No worthless CGI trailers, no boring charts and graphs, it's all game. It's legitimately interesting to watch, too. There are so many fun tidbits (and, occasionally, big news) that they reveal about each game. I prefer Nintendo's E3 format far beyond any other, the only thing lost was reactions.

To be fair this sort of thing has always been around at E3 in some form, just never as well put together, or in such volume, or as exhaustive.

Yeah, it's good stuff, and I'm starving because I haven't been able to tear myself away from my PC since the Digital Event.

I've had way more fun following this all afternoon than I have watching all these pre-baked 'stage demos' and CGI trailers. Helps that the Treehouse guys seem so super excited about what they do for a living, too. They're just regular people that love video games.

It is literally the most engaging thing I've ever seen happen at E3, as someone who has never had the chance to go.

Take a bow, Nintendo. This is how you do a presentation. Nintendo completely nailed it this year.

Indeed. I'll probably watch the whole 20+ hours even if the coverage ends at 3am some days. Having the Treehouse playing live is awesome.

I hope so. I wasn't a fan of quite a few notable games not getting at the very least mentioned in the main Digital Event (Mario Party 10? Devil's Third?), but for extended looks at the individual games so far it's been great. I'm totally sold on X and Hyrule Warriors now - for the longest time I've wanted to see extended gameplay sessions in both, and that's something the traditional E3 format couldn't have delivered.

YES I agree. I was not expecting them to show THAT much of Xenoblade. Cutscenes story, battle and that music. A good 15-20+ mins of that alone was amazing.

This coverage has been absolutely awesome. They introduced the games with the digital event, then let the games have long demos. You can't do that on a media stage show since everyone is fighting for appointment time. This is just all Nintendo games nonstop and for long demos.

The Treehouse format works perfect when you have real demos and real gameplay of the games, so, it probably won't work with the actual status of the Sony and Microsoft games showed at their conferences yesterday, lol.

The only thing I'd change - during the gap between the Direct and Treehouse, they should've been airing all the trailers for Wii U and eShop games that they've put on YouTube.

Yup. Engage the fans, not the press. The whole idea was removing some of the middle men; and it's working brilliantly so far.

Agreed. This is actually making me interested in Hyrule Warriors
Indeed. I mean... a Great Fairy summoning the Moon from Majora's Mask to use as a weapon against the dragon-boss from Twilight Princess? Hell yeah. :D

And I wouldn't have know about shit like that and probably wouldn't have given the game much of a look since Dynasty Warriors isn't really my thing, were it not for this Treehouse thing, but all this extended coverage completely flipped my opinion of the game and has me hyped now. :D

But yeah, I've definitely been absolutely loving this and hope this becomes a staple for Nintendo, because it's just been wonderful so far. :D

I honestly want Sony and MS to drop those shitty conferences and copy Nintendo´s style.

I´m thouroughly impressed !

Fake Edit: Aonuma is so adorable !

Hey, remember last year Nintendo directs when they have no demos to show...?

Gamespot & IGN and other secondary media outlets am cry.

Soon every publisher will have their own presentation and not be subject to 20 minute segments, allowing them greater connectivity to an audience.

If your big thing for E3 was to bring a scripted demo, this format is the worst thing for you.

Vertical slices are hopefully becoming a thing of the past, and with the acceptance of early access, hopefully developers are willing to bring more complete (but very alpha) builds.
