Destiny Alpha Thread: Impressions from the wild [Code Begging=ban]

Question: Is the quality of the loot you receive dictated by how well you do in a strike?

it is in multiplayer, in the stikes and stuff, it's more based on the difficulty and performance as a group iirc. Beating it on a harder setting will grant better gear than an easier setting for example.

I'm back for more.

The game is drop-dead gorgeous. Absolutely beautiful game.

1) Weapons are fun to fire for the most part. I really like this one series of shotgun that's like an energy shotgun: you hold it up to charge and it unleashes a satisfying punch.

2) Don't know, but you can customize your ship. Not sure to what extent in the Alpha.

3) Don't know.

I'm not a framerate fanatic or a pixel counter, but I think it's locked 30fps and above 720p.

How did you find the loot? Are they stingy on the quality of the stuff?

Oh thanks.

Enemies drop them or there are crates lying around that you have to keep an eye out for.

Awesome. I hope the weapon models we've seen are the more conservative designs that you buy from vendors to get yourself started and the specialty weapons are restricted to drops and are the most exotic, balls to the wall designs.

Thanks for the impressions everyone, I'm getting more and more hyped for this game. The PvP impressions disappoint me, I want some good bungie pvp and I'm hoping they don't disappoint once it's ready. Since not much is shown my hope is still there.

there's a nice mix, some vendors offer really high end weapons, but require you to have a certain reputation with them, vanguard or crucible marks as well (so either from pvp or pvc). The factions play into this as well, doing patrols will let you access weapons and armor from specific vendors.

Legacy Southpaw controls

Non of those appeal to you? Seems like a good amount of control layouts. I know bumper jumper is a classic.
Bumper Jumper is the one I used in the Halo games. But it is not in Destiny, and neither is any of the classic Halo control schemes. The ones available are all variations of the COD control scheme (which I don't like, at all)

I'm cautious about the PvP. I'm a pure shooter/balance snob though, so I think I knew coming into it that this wasn't going to be geared to my tastes. I'm glad its there, the small slice I've had so far hasn't totally grabbed me yet. I think I had Shadowrun in my head, and its definitely not that either.

the pvp is really limited right now unfortunately. I think when the alpha drops in july more modes will be available so it'll have a much better representation then. I also think that detiny will favor team game much more, if theres anything like an invasion version from halo reach it'll be much more effective.

Had almost zero interest in this until I watched the GB QL and now I can't wait for Thursday. They've done such a terrible job showing this game off so far.

Ah I thought jumper was bumper jumper.

To bad you can't just customize. I wish more developers would allow that.

Really enjoying this so far. Don't have anything specific I wanna comment on cuz I'm only level 6 and I haven't played for that long, but it's fun.

Again, other folks with this, add me! techn1colors is my PSN ID.

Great to hear Dax. I loved Halo 3's shotgun and Reach's shotgun too by the way. I didn't doubt the impact would feel satisfying. I cannot wait to check out all sorts of different variations etc.

You can customize your ship, man that's amazing. Your impressions are greatly appreciated Dax!

What's your favorite thing about the alpha?

I'm sure there will be a video up soon of the shotgun I'm describing. There are several different shotguns in the game, and variations of each type.

And you're welcome. =)
What's your favorite thing about the alpha?
Probably just walking around and exploring. Eager to see what campaign has to offer.
Huh, that footage looks better than anything else I've seen for the game so far. In terms of how it seems to play, I mean. The vehicles look good.

The vehicles are amazing. Your Sparrow (?) is so much fun to drive when free-roaming. Halo quality, think Warthog.

I thought so too, when I saw the name, but no. The only thing it has in common with BJ is that you jump with L1. That's it. The real BJ in Destiny would look like this:

LS: Crouch
RS: ADS
L2: Grenade
L1: Jump
R2: Shoot
R1: Melee
Triangle: Switch Weapon
Circle: Action/Reload
Cross: Sprint
Square: Ability

And yes, it would be great if they would let us customize the controls.

Please Bungie, add some of the classic Halo control schemes in Destiny. Please.

After reading Luke's post and watching some of Giant Bomb's video, I'm finally starting to understand why this game could be great.

It's making me pretty bummed that Diablo 3 and this come out on PS4 so close together, as it seems like they're gonna scratch a similar itch for me. I wish there was a much bigger gap in release dates because my gaming time is super limited these days and it'll be pretty much impossible to enjoy both in the same window of time. I realize I could wait for one or the other but that sounds like a sucky option.

What's your favorite thing about the alpha?
For me,

The presentation of everything is super slick, seriously god-tier.
The world invokes my imagination muscles in that Bioshock way. Hits all the right notes.
The pacing is different, I'm enjoying it.

Not much I can add to what others have stated. I had a chance to play the alpha weeks before this current alpha as well. There are certain things they have removed from the previous build of this exact alpha. Nothing major, but they had some exotics (gold) gear shown/sold bye some of the NPCs, although you couldn't use it nor purchase them due to high level requirements. Nothing else different, except with the addition of free roam mode.

My impressions are overwhelmingly positive. Seeing the game through what has been shown thus far in videos/trailers does not convey how great the game feels tbh. Enjoy the small taste for those that are going in fresh.

I don't appear to have an Alpha invite. I can only assume there must be some kind of mistake.

Bungie, I thought we were friends.

Just got done playing for an hour or two, here are some thoughts!

Old Russia is really beautiful during sunset lighting conditions. The world is much larger than I initially anticipated and that's a good thing. Cruising around on the Sparrow is a lot of fun thanks in part to the Star Wars sound effects and I like that you can summon one at any time.

Weapon models look a little low resolution on the texture side, particularly the shotgun that came with the Hunter class I picked. Gunplay feels solid, much better than it appeared it would be considering the videos. I think it's due in part to the substantial level of vibration you get from the controller feedback. Headshots are also satisfying with a wispy smoke effect.

Patrol missions are typical fodder, but I enjoyed the combat and exploring enough to continue doing them for an hour or two straight. Seeing the Fallen and Hive fight against each other was a nice surprise and it felt pretty dynamic in a three way fight.

I'm still not particularly fond of the voice acting by Dinklage found in the story mission, just sounds a little monotone and disinterested. Another small complaint is that the load times seemed fairly lengthy when going back and forth from the Tower to Old Russia.

Random feedback thoughts that I think may help improve the game:

1. I'm still not entirely sure if there is something like this in the game, but it seemed like whenever I ran into someone it was pretty fleeting and didn't have a substantial impact. It would be more interesting if you could go up to the person, press a button and they instantly join your fire team and go on to complete quests with them.

2. It would be better if the map was accessible at all times when you are at the Tower rather than seeing it only when you talk to a certain person.

3. When hovering over equipment items it would be great if it automatically loaded and previewed it on your character rather than having to dig into the menu check out how it looks.

I will continue to play and give more feedback, but so far I very much enjoyed what I got to play.

Hope a lot of us don't have to wait till beta to try it, mainly due to quite a few people in here stressing it needs to be played and felt, etc.

How does gun customization/leveling up work in PVP? I'd imagine there's a base set of stats that you can negligibly upgrade on your guns otherwise I'd imagine this game would be pretty sucky to jump into late.

joining players is a little strange. You have to right thumbstick down on them, then inspect them, then you can join them. Its a little needless and complex but its there.

The Giantbomb Unfinished video is really amazing.. wow O_o!!

The traversal looks cool as hell on those boverbikes too. Holy hell I am excite :). Can't wait to play the beta. Or the alpha if I get in on thursday ( fingers crossed ).

Got a link ?

Just watched the first video. It's basically people running around in a circle on a flat map capturing zones. I know people hate when this word is used as criticism but this game looks so boring! I cannot believe how lackluster it all seems. Perplexing

I've been really iffy about the game until watching Ninja play. It feels like it's someones job at Bungie to make this game seem as boring as possible in all their official gameplay videos.

Watch this and then watch the 1+ hour Giant Bomb play through.

Played two matches at e3 and really enjoyed it. We didn't get to customize our setups bit they did give me an Alpha code, so hopefully I can put some time in this weekend.

in terms of multiplayer i think that shadowrun is the closest reference.

Omg omg omg omg!!!!

This is like THE best thing ever. Shadowrun, Halo 3 and Halo Reach are probably my favorite MP shooters on Xbox 360.

Voice acting sounds really well done too.

Loving that people are now able to tell others how good this game is, been hyped since day 1 but even more so after the impressions.

Hope I get in the Alpha on Thursday.
