Splatoon (Nintendo 4x4 team shooter, Wii U, 2015)

Perfect. Just perfect.

CoD on Wii U has feature parity with all other platforms. The account system is lacking but the infrastructure gets a bad rep for no reason. The complaints are way the hell overblown.
The problem is, CoD on Wii U is a ghost town. I have concerns about Splatoon's viability on the platform due to the performance of other online shooters on the Wii U. But Nintendo makes it a wild card.

I'm definintely interested in this; at the very least my most anticipated new IP out of anything at E3. I hope all the offline/online components and the mechanics are pulled off wonderfully in execution. Looks like addicting gameplay.

Hopefully the people currently loving MK8 will play this. It looks a blast. Hope there's plenty of modes.

At first I was underwhelmed, but as I was watching the Treehouse stream I got a sense that the mechanics were deeper than I previously thought and the gameplay very fast and frenetic. Definitely one to watch, and a Nintendo game with online is always welcome.

May have been asked, but do we know who is developing this?

Splatoon, Project Robot, Project Guard, and Star Fox U are all by EAD Kyoto (mainly traces of the Nintendo Land ensemble). Zelda and Mario Maker are by the usual EAD guys. Captain Toad is by EAD Tokyo.

I think Nintendo made a mistake showing this early.

By the end of 2014, there's going to be a million clones of it out and no one will remember the word "Splatoon".

I heard it was a couple of guys in their spare time, so it's not technically a Nintendo game at all.

Nintendo. This fucking company.

That's not the case at all obviously.

As if copying the EAD's ability to make perfectly honed video games is that easily copied. It's not just the idea it's execution as well. This has been demonstrated time and time again.

The competition isn't going to be throwing a AAA budget at a non-M-rated shooter any time soon.

I guess the closest is sunset overdrive, but that obviously can't be a copycat.

This game looks like just the killer app the Wii U needs. I had memories of Community's paintball episodes while watching the gameplay.

The landscape has changed though - someone takes the concept and fires up Unity, makes it up in a few months, releases it on early access and boom the game is cloned as a free to play multiplayer shooter. Maps and frills follow after.

Even if a clone got 60% of the way there, it's devastating for this game. They showed it too early, it should have been shown when it was months out from release, rather than half a year+.

At the moment it doesn't even come close to AAA, it should be compared to games like Loadout, Warframe etc.

yeah....no

It looks unique, and I like seeing Nintendo create new IPs.

Although it doesn't appeal to me that much at the moment, it definitely looks fun and maybe I'll develop more interest in it as we learn more about it.

I'm not really enamored with the character design, which is usually one of Nintendo's strong suits. But the game looks fun, definitely some cool ideas there. It's got potential.

I don't actually know anything about it. Somehow flew mostly under my radar. I thought it was still a small DL title?

It was $30 on 360 and $40 on One, but in terms of production values, I'd definitely put it on a par with this game.

But I don't think anyone's going to be ripping off this game any time soon. The paint mechanic isn't something that can be knocked up in Unity in a couple of weeks on a technical level, let alone the insane amount of design challenges it raises, nor the painstaking process of getting everything tuned and balanced.

This was the last game I played today, and it's probably the most fun I had. There's an incredible amount of coordination and skill required to win a game.

If you watch the preview from the direct earlier today, you have the gist of the gameplay, but holy crap there's a lot of strategy involved. The first game we played, my team got stomped bc our team was too focused on the choke point. It's a lot of fun regardless

Thanks for the impressions. Very hyped for this.

Do we have confirmation of online voice chat? :/ It won't be a dealbreaker but still.

Wait...by the end of THIS year there will be a million clones?

Somehow I doubt that.

No confirmation that I have seen, but the Treehouse stream was talking about coming up with strategies with your team mates so I think it is very likely.

I really hope there's online voice chat! That would be crucial for a game like this. They couldn't confirm it when I asked unfortunately

Now all you whiners can finally shut up about Nintendo creating a new non-eShop/non-casual character driven IP.
:P

I love the character designs, and art style. I'm sure a lot is going to change while leading up to it's release, and I'm really excited to see what they do.
The paint, and squid mechanics look insane.
Trying to control the map will be absolute chaos online!
Day 1

I just love what Nintendo brought to the medium with this game. Their first FPS and it's 100% differerent than the hundreds of shooters released so far.

The Nintendo difference. Because it's Nintendo. Whatever.

Bravo.

I wonder how they'll make it accessible, because it looks like it moves fast. That type of shooter certainly require a lot more dexterity than cart racers. Lock on aim maybe?

Looked awesome, I really thought a paint shooter would be great for Nintendo and they put their own twist on it! I will get a Wii U someday....
