The Treehouse Live Format is the Future of E3

Props to Nintendo this year. They had a pretty good E3 direct, the Treehouse was cool to see the games in depth, and the Smash Tournament was a nice little touch to build some hype for the game.

I've been trying so hard to think how this format could be seen as inferior to past E3 initiatives from both Nintendo themselves and their competitors, but fuck that. This is really the absolute best format they or anyone else has ever come up with. What's more, with the energy from the Smash Invitational (which comes after the well done Digital Event content and the ongoing Treehouse stream and before the Roundtable), I feel like Nintendo has struck gold with the delivery of their materials and ability to keep interest at max.

Fundamentally, it doesn't strike me as massively different to the official pre/post-show I saw for Sony's conference (I think Microsoft had the same, but I had to run just after the conference ended). One key difference, though, is that it came across as a lot more sincere; less telling me that things were awesome, and a lot more showing me how they were awesome.

I approve.

I'm really surprised at how well this is working. It was nice to get things going with a little and well done video and then getting to know things in a direct (lol) approach with people involved talking and showing their projects. Smash Bros. Invitational was really fun too and exciting.

This was the most games an E3 event can be. Not one second was wasted talking about what doesn't matter to the community. I'm definitely watching the upcoming Treehouse lives.

Everything Nintendo did today paid off. They engaged throughout the day with solid reveals, news and info, culminating in the Smash tourney which, despite accusations of ignoring the appeal of a live conference, ironically generated more excitement and audience participation than anything I've ever seen at E3. MS and Sony, while each putting on a strong show, suddenly looked rather stuffy and old-fashioned.

It's been a huge popularity switch for Nintendo, and one I don't think anyone could have predicted. They played their hand perfectly.

Awesome! Can somebody shop in the Wii U being inside?

Pictures of this ilk always bother me: That's a reflection. Geoff is inside in that shot, looking outside at the rain. You can tell: You can see the scenery behind Geoff through him. That means that Geoff is translucent, hence he's a reflection.

The thing depicted is the thing that is *inside looking out*. If it were to be rendered as solid instead, it would be *outside looking in*.

At the end of the day today was a good day. So much fun from waking up watching nintendos digital event, watching the tree house all day and ending on smash. One of the best e3 days in recent memories. Crazy how much I felt like I was part of the e3 experience even though I was at home.

E3 2013: "WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK is nintendo doing? No press conference? Are they insane?! Nintendo is stepping down...ect"

E3 2014: " great format, bravo Nintendo! Revolutionary, ditch the press conferences!"

You guys....

Loved the format, though the only game I'm interested they demoed today was Hyrule Warriors/X.

It definitely evolved since they first showed it. At first it looked somehow bland to me, but after they showed today a more close to final build it looked interesting. Left me with an eye on it.

It has been super entertaining for me and between the presentation and the games I think Nintendo has outdone themselves this year.

Nintendo did E3 today better than anything we have ever seen. The digital was short and funny. The treehouse was much more in depth and fun. The smash tournament was epic. Nintendo has won E3 so far.

Seriously, Nintendo needs a Robot Chicken series on Nintendo Video

This thread is literally about how well Nintendo is giving us information compared to last year.

Either Nintendo controls what the press sees, or Nintendo controls what we see. I'd rather just eliminate the press.

Thats why I think is disturbing.

But band must play on, i suppose...

That's a fair point, but may I put a spin on it:

What advantage are you gaining from getting the media's version of the story rather than Nintendo's own version? The information in these treehouse presentations are fundamentally the information that would instead have been given to the press, and they'd have filtered it down to us. What do we actually gain from that second filter?

I put it to you as this: The only thing we gain is the press's perception of that information.

In other words: You are arguing that it's bad to have Nintendo telling us what to think. I do actually agree with that. But I'd also argue that it's no better to have the press telling us what to think. And at least getting the information directly from Nintendo means it has fewer instances of spin in place.

I watched some Playstation videos they always do throughout the day on E3 and it was horrible compared to this. Very standard PR-style interviews with no real gameplay demos. I mean, my goodness, THIS is how it's done. I can't believe how awesome it was, and I hope Sony and MS take a good look at this format.

The fact that we get to meet more people involved in the development process of the games, like the Treehouse guys, is actually really awesome. Something Nintendo didn't do that much in the past was giving their devs and employees exposure, outside of their stablished icons, but it seems that has been changing with the years, Iwata Asks helped a lot when they were around and this is a step in the right direction once again, imo.

Whether people want to see this format or not in the future, the fact is it kept Nintendo at the center of conversation for most of this day.

And honestly for nothing. It was one of their best marketing days ever

Same here. And I really digged the music on the Twilight map.

Is this going to happen again tomorrow, or was today it for this Treehouse thing?

It's not the same people, it's not the same comments.

that is very rarely true

the most important thing here is that they demo the games in a lengthier format instead of having a segment cherrypicked to have the most shooting or explosions for stage appeal. we get to make a more informed decision for ourselves according to our individual tastes and see the game as it is, not quite how the showman wants us to see it.

It was interesting that they basically took Xenoblade from the very start of the game. Sure, they whizzed through the lengthy cutscenes, but it meant they could introduce concepts at the rate the game did. You can do that in a thirty minute demo and you simply can't in a five minute one.

Treehouse was around last year?

Must've missed it.

The treehouse all day and smash invitational were glorious, the direct was not bad at all either. Thats how you do marketing right. More than 100000 watching during the whole day.

Haven't watch it yet but all the positive feedback here has me excited to watch the archives. Btw, does anyone know where I can watch the archives are/if they have any?

He is the ghost of gaming journalism.

Also have to appluad them for getting understandable translators. I really hate it when they barely speak english and its hard to understand what they are saying.

This is a thread praising Nintendo for Treehouse Live which they did not do last year. Are you really confused why the reactions are different?

Most likely a lot of it will be on Nintendo's YouTube and Twitch accounts.

There were over 100,000 watching continuously all day, with like 250,000 watching the Super Smash Bros and I dunno how many watching the Digital Event.
Nobody else had that much exposure.

do it, wii u + pc is the best combo right now and you can spice it up a bit with a dose of 3ds and vita sauce

I think this is probably true. I can't wait to start watching the back catalog of the broadcast when I get home from work. I am so hyped for the smash event.

Going in depth mechanically and having a long look doesn't really sound like what the other publishers would do, it's more about teasers, CG trailers and 10 minute vertical slices.

Who knows if this will lead to better sales or whether Nintendo can turn its fortunes around. All I know is that for one glorious day, Nintendo was king again.
