Splatoon (Nintendo 4x4 team shooter, Wii U, 2015)

There are some advanced tecniques already made by the Treehouse guys, one of them was jumping out of the ink into squid mode, switching to human, shoot ink midair into enemy territory and drop into that pool of ink, it was amazing when it was done on quick succesion and if he came out with it in a month I wonder what crazy stuff will advanced competitive player will create with six months of experience.

This is awesome:

Hahaha fantastic.

The mature audience will be playing Splatoon.
The youth will be playing CoD.
Truth. Haha.

In all honesty I actually sort of feel that way. Splatoon is a game for the entire family and looks to have depth for dedicated players. The demographic for something like COD is large but not necessarily as diverse or welcoming to ALL players.

But, that's just par for the course for Nintendo games.

Honest question: why in the world is there so much fan art already? I've never seen anything like it before with a new IP, and it's not that the art style is amazing or anything.

Don't get me wrong. I'm excited for the game, it looks so fun.

I loved that they seemed to be coming up with ideas mid-stream. Like that guy who said "Hey, could you ink the walls and wall jump between them?". Not to mention the debates people are already having over how best to use squid mode for stealth.

God this game I really hope that they do some more streaming of it this week so far its awesome.

We are getting some today, in fact! Probably more tomorrow as well because it seems to be popular.

Because Squid Girls.

Oh so you can kill other people in this game. For some reason I thought you couldn't.

The trailer also shows different items/weapons. With one being more like a rifle, with scope, with more of a focused shot, similar to a paintball gun.

Doesnt seem to splat much ink, but it must be a tradeoff to take out opponents easily, to not being able to contribute to inking turf as much.

I like the colours, I want to test the ground(&wall) control aspect, and the dual-mode locomotion (squid/humanoid) intrigues me as well. Plus that megajump from spawn right back into battle if you wish. I'm more of a fan of fixed spawnpoints, but this mechanic appears to combine the advantages of fixed and variable spawnpoints. Me like.

Might be damn fun.

Also, squids. I love 'em.
Ultimately because they're extremely tasty, but also because they're awesome.

If I ever get a WiiU this game will be mine.

Edit: That (S)platoon fan pic is hilarious.

I think the concept captures the imagination easily

also, there is a pre-existing fanbase for squid girls.

i'm not kidding (nor am I talking about tentacle porn)

I'm super excited for this and I'm glad to see that the reception is so positive. It's super weird to me that I'm hyped for a competitive shooter from NINTENDO.

Very ambiguously gendered looking squid girl characters.

Have you hung around much on sites like deviantart or tumblr?

Ok I have a serious question.

Do you think these are girls who have the power to turn into squids, or are they squids who have the power to turn into girls?

I'm leaning toward the latter, due to how many squid aspects they keep in human form, and because it seems like a Japanese sort of thing to do.

Shigeru Miyamoto is overseeing Splatoon with a producer role.

What other projects are you working on now?
I also still have a producer role on other titles. Splatoon is another one that I’m overseeing as producer. That game is being developed by members from the Animal Crossing team, as well as the previous director of Star Fox, as well as the art director from Nintendo Land. So they’re all working together on Splatoon, and I’m overseeing that as a produer. I’m also overseeing Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, which is being developed by our EAD Tokyo Studio.

I think they are just Squid Girls. Not human or squid.

Honestly I love shooters, but I'm just tired of seeing realistic serious military shooters, again, and again, and AGAIN. Call of Duty, Battlefield, ARMA, so on and so on. At least Titanfall added some new mechanics to spice things up but it was more the exception than the norm.

Splatoon looks like something NEW, and FUN, but certainly still a shooter. It actually looks to have some skill depth to it as well. Refreshing in all the right ways. It's my game of E3 so far, and that's even including the incredible value of the Halo Compilation.

I can see where all of the excitement is coming from, because I'm feeling it too. If it was up for pre-purchase on Steam I'd have bought it already.

The youth will be playing CoD.

"Mature" titles are actually for the immature if you ask me; being "mature" means you're at peace with yourself, and don't have anything to prove. From my (anecdotal) experience, the majority of people that play the majority of today's shooters do not fit that definition.

The first time I saw the trailer. I didn't have interest in this. But the more I see it, it started to grow on me. Its now my most wanted game.

New IP... and it's a SHOOTER. Did not expect this... very, very cool concept! A day one for me.

That said... i secretly wish they replaced the "squid kids" with characters from the Mario universe. Would have loved to see Mario, Toad and the gang go up against Bowser and his crew in each level.
Ugh.

I wasn't quite sure about the game based on the Ninty Direct (or whatever their main show was called), but the Treehouse stuff sold me on it, completely. This actually looks like a lot of fun. And as someone said earlier in the thread, it looks kinda like early '90s Sega stuff.

On the flipside, being mature means you just don't give a fuck and can play anything without feeling bad because it's too "kiddy" OR too "bro." You enjoy the gameplay and aren't concerned about how playing the game makes you look.

Mature gamers can play CoD. I don't think others should judge them as being part of a less mature group for doing so.

I'm really happy Nintendo are doing their own take on the team-based shooter genre, and it fits perfectly with their aesthetic. I'm curious to see what else there is in Splatoon but from the sounds of it, it seems like it's going to be Nintendo's Team Fortress 2.

Yeah, it's hilarious how hypocritical people are when confronted with "you're game is kiddy". "Games shouldn't be looked at that way, you're game is kiddy!".
