Splatoon (Nintendo 4x4 team shooter, Wii U, 2015)

It seriously warms my heart that a lot of people seem to be on board with this game--and so fast!--simply because it's two things: a new IP and a different kind of game from Nintendo.

I'm so impressed this has over 20 pages already on the second day.

Oh, yes. It does.

---
I'm also hoping this has MKTV-style replay features in the final game, because that'd be sick and I feel like there's even more potential here for that sort of thing than in Mario Kart.

Honestly, highlight reel/replay saving functions need to be in all multiplayer games if you ask me. It's just a perfect feature for online MP games with sharing highlights and accidentally making viral videos and gifs.

Honest question: why in the world is there so much fan art already? I've never seen anything like it before with a new IP, and it's not that the art style is amazing or anything.

Don't get me wrong. I'm excited for the game, it looks so fun.

I thought the water color concept art was fantastic.

I'm in for this game. It'd be cool if Nintendo added a FLUDD vs. The Kalamari Paint People mode; I think it'd be fun atleast.

So do the squids transform into people when they leave the ink, or they are people who appear and use the squids to shoot? I'm really distracted by this.

The creator of Squid Girl tweet about this game.

Translation would be appreciated.

Bumping post because I need to know.

I feel the exact sameway, I get excited everytime this thread is bumped, I really want nintendo to notice this.

You seem to be able to stay in squid mode even when not in your own ink, but it looks like you'll be visible and you won't be able to move very much. It's best to transform back to a person.

It looks like when you kill someone they explode in your color ink. That could mean trouble for people grouping together in tight corridors. Also, I'd like to see if you're vulnerable while map jumping. You don't go that fast, and you can't fire, that could be a good balance for the easy way to travel huge distances.

This game looks like the best thing ever by the way. Most exciting thing I've seen at e3 this year.

Watched that 15 minute Treehouse demo, what am I missing? The camera is super awful, the on foot action is slow and cumbersome as hell and the squid mode just makes the camera go more apeshit, especially on the corners?

I guess it could be fun to play and the internet is already filled with lewd fanart so I know there has to be something I am missing.

I'm sure if CTF was added you wouldn't be able to morph if you were holding the enemy flag. Your team would most likely have to support you as you run out in the open.
That being said.....stealth ninja-ing your way into the enemy base as a squid to steal the flag could be insanely awesome!
Simple solution is to check your map often for anyone sneaking a paint trail into your base for the morph. Also, I'm sure the flag will be visible even when the bearer's morphed and swimming, so you can then coordinate to snuff the player out. Maybe even slower movement speed, though that's mainly a balance issue to be figured out with how maps are designed.

Honestly, it looks boring to play. Though I do have to say that its a very unique idea (ink mechanics are clever) and the aesthetic is nice. Also, +1 to shooters that are not M rated.

Stole the show for me. I can't believe there's an actual new IP let alone a shooter.

To tell the truth the art style doesn't do it for me. Not japanese enough if that make sense, more Americanized, though I'm sure that's the look they're going for. But regardless those mechanics look fun and innovative, day one purchase without a doubt.

I think the art style is throwing me off. It looks like a cheaply made game, which makes me subconsciously think it doesn't look fun.

A heart for starters

Wow This thread is going to huge popular!

This thread shows that how many people really wanted nintendo's fresh new IP.

This is my one of the Best Game at E3 2014.

Not sure why you're saying the camera's bad, because it looks great and we don't even know the camera controls (or if you can play in first-person, for that matter). Also, I'll find other games to play if I want to look at androgynous tentacle porn all day.

This guy played it
Just played it. It's fun. Controls better with gyro, though, and that's weird.

Like others have probably already said, it looks like something that Dreamcast era Sega would do. The heavy emphasis in bright colors, the stylized yet "realistic" environments, the "american" japanese aesthetic (think Crazy Taxi) and character design.

The fact that this is coming from Nintendo is both surprising and exciting at the same time, and I can't wait to play it.

Do we know anything about performance from the demo, like the framerate and stuff? I wouldn't be surprised if it ran at 60.

tbh you can feel how gyro+stix is good in WW and such when aiming bows/grappling hooks. just solves that finer movement problem with sticks.

Also, I just noticed this:

Select between multiple control options on the Wii U GamePad controller,
including using gyroscopic controls to look around

To me, that sounds like you can turn the gyro controls off if you want.

A diamond looks cheap to a dirt farmer. Go shovel some brown dirt and gray rock, celebrate, then leave the gems for us.
Why would a diamond look cheap to a dirt farmer? Diamonds are worth more money than dirt. He could stop being a dirt farmer and retire if he found enough diamonds. Nothing you said makes sense or applies to this situation.

Anyway, the game still looks pretty bad.

So much fan-art!!!

Man this game looks and sounds really cool.

As a PC gamer, I say, this one and Mario Kart are truly calling me to get a WiiU.

New IP... and it's a SHOOTER. Did not expect this... very, very cool concept! A day one for me.

That said... i secretly wish they replaced the "squid kids" with characters from the Mario universe. Would have loved to see Mario, Toad and the gang go up against Bowser and his crew in each level.

No. Thats enough mario for a while, hes had more than his share of the spotlight for quite some time. Mario and Co. are in way too many Nintendo games as it is. Nintendo has needed fresh faces and a new universe for a very long time.

the more I read about this and watch videos the more hyped I get. This looks like something I'm going to sink countless hours into and I can't wait to do so. I'm really eager to see what other modes they have planned, too. And that's just assuming there are more because of saying "Turf War" before a match starts.

Very happy with this game. feeling a hole in the library in a creative way.

The environment is just how I imagined a Nintendo FPS.
yeah does anyone who played it can give insight on the FPS? Does anyone know how the ink works, tons of it can be everywhere but from the videos I watched it doesnt seem to hitch the game at all.

It was just one of the first thoughts in my head when they said you could hide in the paint. Just wanted to see if anyone saw anything about hiding on the walls.

You could hide along the walls. You're able to jump as a squid. The problem is that spraying is such an integral part of the game, and you're basically defenseless while hiding so I can't see it being really effective unless you have a teammate coordinating with you

This game looks excellent. It already looks so polished and ready to play, sucks that we still have to wait a year before the game comes out.

Let me spell it out. Dirt farming in gaming is the art of searching for another endless gray brown shooter. These people pass on highly polished and fantastic gems like Splatoon.

Anyway, the game still looks fantastic.

To me it fills the Team Fortress 2 gap of a fun, team centered shooting game that isn't based around kill counts. You have to work as a team, or you won't win very many matchups -- and I love that type of multi-player setup.

You really don't get it?
A diamond is a just a rock, nothing more, nothing less. We are a society put value in that rock, meaning, you(the farmer) see the game a rock and we see it as a diamond.

Game was smooth no matter how chaotic it got. I wish I got some gameplay footage of a chokepoint because it gets crazy. The ink stays until the other team sprays over it, which makes sense since the point system is based on how much ink your team has on the map.
