Splatoon (Nintendo 4x4 team shooter, Wii U, 2015)

I still don't understand why this isn't up on every press site's best of show (or getting that much press reaction).

If this were an indie game it would have an insane amount of press buzz (obviously the fan reaction is great, as per this thread).

For the record, I'm an indie developer, so please don't take this the wrong way. I'm just speaking my mind here.

Magic! I like to think of Mario as really resilient, and just being knocked out by those things.

Because it's always canon or canonical or stuff that Mario always wins and is always okay.
Mario is a pretty magical world, you can touch a star and turn invincible. So I like to think that Mario is okay, and just eats a mushroom, and tries again.

But the poor turtles

If this were an indie game, I wouldn't be calling it an indie game anyway. This game looks to be spinning the arena shooter its own way, not going for retro everything or wasting solid mechanics with boring game structure.

I'm in the camp of being supremely impressed with how this game looks and plays. I think they gave it just as much time as it deserved during the digital event. New IP that appears extremely polished and balanced and tactical and intense and just everything nice.

I can honestly see this entering the eSports arena in a big way

Many indie games don't do any of those things. The idea that they do is ridiculous.

It's so damn cool to see Nintendo making an online shooter, and it's every bit as interesting and creative as I would have imagined. Everything's coming up Wii U!

So far this is my game of the show. I normally hate mulitplayer anything, but I could honestly see myself getting into this. The game looks completely gorgeous too and I love the use of the touchscreen and the risk-reward aspect it brings to the game.

This looks really, really fun. I just hope Nintendo doesn't slip up and forget an obvious option like inverted y-axis.

I hope it's early 2015.

I love this game, it just looks so fun

At the first reveal trailer I thought it looked kinda fun but didn't see the magic of it. The treehouse gameplay demonstrations made me a true believer, this with bayonetta 1&2 bundle, and smash are the best things at E3 IMO.

I'm loving the artstyle. The character designs bear some western inclinations, but they're vibrant and colorful like typical Japanese designs. It reminds me of the Kids Next Door.

The more I see of this game, the more I'm excited for it. Kind of crazy to think this game is still a minimum of at least 6 months away when it already looks very polished/good to go now.

I had some hands on with this today. I guess I was expecting something like TF2 or Garden Warfare but the mechanics really take the emphasis off shooting other players. It's almost counter productive at times. You spend a lot of the round shooting at the ground instead, and it's a more of a battle of maneuver than a test of who has the better aim. I don't quite know what to make of it yet, but it's pretty far from a conventional shooter. De Blob was a very apt comparison.

I wonder what other kinds of game modes that there are, the one at E3 is called Turf War.

The mode in the demo looked like it was focusing more on, covering the area, I hope its there is a " team slayer" kind of thing.

I also Hope there is a free for all mode, and we can be diferent colors of the rainbow,

I also hop you get to customize your squid girl.

I may not have been excited for a game so much in this way since Skullgirls and Mighty No. 9. Even though there are plenty of games more. I'm sorry for saying this a lot, but I don't really like first person and third person shooters very much. And I probably won't like this game as much as Mario Kart 8 because of that.

And I also haven't played as much Skullgirls as a lot of other fighting games. And there are other games I'm looking forward to more than Mighty No. 9. Just the same, there are a lot of games from E3 I'm looking forward to more than Splatoon.

But at the same time there's a really special excitement I'm feeling for Splatoon that's similar to how I felt when the Skullgirls Indiegogo and the Mighty No. 9 Kickstarter happened. It's a feeling I think like something new and special and important is happening and I want to be a part of it and know more. I'm just so curious about it and fascinated by it.

This may be growing on me and be becoming my favourite game at this E3. But it's hard to say because it's a different kind of excitement. It's really hard to explain, but I really like this game and I'm really excited for it.

Actually, when I first came to NeoGAF today, even though I think I probably like some of the other games more. My first thought was to come to this thread because I really wanted more information about this game. I wanted to know more so much.

I think maybe it's that there's already such a growing fan community and excitement for this game like there was for Skullgirls and things like that. There's so much fanart and people talking about it and expressing excitement. And it's so unique, I've never seen a game quite like this before, and it makes me really curious. And it's a third person shooter, I've always wanted a way to try and enjoy more genres, but I could never get first person and third person shooters. Having a third person shooter that really appeals to me is really exciting.

I think all of this new amazing fanart is a part of that. It's like something new and wonderful is just begging. Like a revolution in video game genres and stuff like that that I really want to be a part of.

This game is just really magical and exciting and I'm not sure what's making me fall in love with it. But it is.

I voted for it. I said earlier I still haven't figured out what my favourite E3 game was. I really like Captain Toad Treasure. And the new Smash Bros. looks like the best Smash Bros. ever. It's going to be in my top three favourite Nintendo Wii U games as soon as it comes out I think. And the new Legend of Zelda looks like could be the best one ever. And Xenoblade Chronicles X looks better than ever.

But I think it deserves it. It's doing something really special. And I think it deserves all this excitement it's getting.

Well, the emphasis IS about inking/controlling the most turf. This isn't a game where simply racking up the most 'kills' will win your team the match, though may it help the overall objective.
