The brand new Splatoon, a family-friendly online shooter where transforming squid girls fire paintballs at each other, was arguably the best multiplayer game at the show.

Only this one play mode was in the demo, so who knows what other features are in the final game (a single-player story you’d assume, but nothing was mentioned). But based on the demo it was one of our most entertaining multiplayer experiences at E3, and undoubtedly the most original. Whether it’ll have the impact as other multiplayer classics like Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros. we can’t say, but it already seems to be of a similar calibre.

Well, one of the more fun things that this game can close the book on is the mythical notion of: motion controls vs Dual stick: who wins in a fight.

Well, you shoot. It's a third person shooter perspective. I don't know what their audience is, but it's not the shooter crowd because of the non-competitive paint wall nature, and it's not for the casual crowd because it's not extremely simple. It's just another game for hardcore Nintendo fans, and I don't think this new IP is going to help the Wii U that much.

There's no option to turn off motion controls in that demo at E3. As someone said, they did confirm it will be available later. Most likely it was focus testing with that control, but my entire team lamented the motion controls.

I was always painting while facing the other team. Obviously, if you die, that's less time to paint, so I'm definitely going to gun for them. It was too easy, in those two matches I played, to be able to figure out the easiest killing strat.

Shoot the ground in front and a bit too the side, squid quickly to the side of the opponent, face the opponent with the movement controls and use the center camera button, then unload on them. Killing them is practically instantaneous if you do have a good lock. It seems like there's not much health, so maybe they'll increase it since squid movement is so powerful.

I did see the strategy of dying and respawning to another player that could be in a safe location where the entire team could start painting, but I never died in my matches, so I could never really use that strat.
 
hopefully they include a wiimote/nunchuk + gamepad setup like pikmin 3. if not i'll stick with gyro. the metroid blast gunship was a joy to control so i know these guys will get it right.

I need some context to this. Have you played OoT 3D and used gyro tilting and aiming? I wonder how it compares because I prefer this setup in the case of OoT over a dual analog equivalent.

It's a learning thing. We had a big debate on here about using twin stick setups versus motion controls for traditional shooters on the Wii like call of duty and that Kevin Sorbo game. The only real conclusive result we could come to was that it's all what you get used to and it all boils down to personal preference. People could go 20-0 with dual stick pretty regularly, but people could occationally do the same thing with motion controls so..it's all about the skill of the player; there's nothing one control scheme does that the other one can't do.

I personally hate motion controls for shooters, but that's me.

, whatever that means, makes me wonder.

I do not expect playing with randoms who most likely have no clue of the mechanics of the game will offer any engaging or strategic gaming. Then it is one mode and one map. I have seen media outlets praise the game along with the fact that the booth always seems packed with people waiting to play it. We here have also seen so much gameplay and it just looks plain fun and that counts for something even if we haven't played it. One poster here even said that the gyro assisted controls were even better than the traditional ones. It definitely can't be as bad as you are saying.

Well when they demo'd the game on the Treehouse, they used a demo unit (that everyone plays on) and definitely toggled between gyro and non-gyro on the fly, so we already know that point's false.

Anyway, I'm interested to see if you can squid, jump, ink the floor in front of you, resquid as you land, and just continue this loop. It'd make games insanely fast and fun (especially a CTF type game where you have to move precisely and quickly while avoiding enemy fire).
 
Voice chat would be great in nintendo games. They must be trying to protect kids but isn't that what parents job?

I will just add friends so w.e but nintendo is ruining its online without a nice social chat. Nintendo players will probably be more respectable online than most communities

They show something like this on the trailer, the only difference is that they do it as a group, whoever gets out of squid form slows down a lot so it seems you have to alternate with someone else to do that and move fast

Nintendo just has to not bundle a headset with it and then it'll be the parent's responsibility. Just make it so that you can't hear voicechat without a headset (that the parents would have to buy) or turn off voice chat by default (but can be enabled). I think that's a nice compromise.

Oh really? Can't wait to play around with this game. The game has a ton of potential; I'm just worried because there's so much that Nintendo can screw up.

It's definitely not a shooter game. You spend a lot of time just painting stuff, and killing people didn't really seem to matter as much. In fact, you could strategically use death to respawn behind the other team and win that way.

Controls were terrible OR gimmicky. I'm sure they'll allow more controls, but aiming with tilt as the main method of aiming is SO BAD! You could only move left and right with the right analog, no up and down. Definitely uses tilt.

I destroyed the other team getting like 15 kills in a the second match that we got to play after I got used to the controls. Even then, the final result was almost even, just slightly favouring my team in terms of percentage of painting the level. So I really feel like this isn't too much PVP as it is just passively shooting up floors and walls.

I do enjoy the squid mode of travel and loading up ink from squid mode, but the overall mechanics available feels really shallow that I can definitely imagine myself getting tired of the game real fast. They definitely need more that painting mode.

After playing a bunch of indie games that are like this quirky shooter kind of game, and they were free, I guess my opinion of this new IP isn't in high regards. It needs more content for sure.

Wait half a year, they'll have a lot more content to showcase. Turf War's the main mode but, with any luck, we'll get modifiers and new modes that make the most of the mechanics.
 
I just watched the Treehouse stream featuring the game.

I want that game badly. Man, so much tactical possibilities! And the game is totally playable IMO, why 2015?

Working on more content I imagine. They said there's four maps at the moment and that the developers are working on "many more". A single player mode is also being deliberated. This game is Nintendo's latest biggest IP and they clearly want it to hit big judging by the massive booth size and the amount of Treehouse coverage.

I really hope they pack this up with a massive amount of content.

I hope they have something Ika Musume. I love Ika Musume so much. And it would be so amazing to see some kind of Ika Musume thing. And it looks like looks like the creator of Ika Musume is kind of interested in it, too.

Polish + maps + modes is my guess. It is EAD, so they got to get that polish going

Probably won't be able to get any ACTUAL ika Musume stuff due to copyrights and publishing and whatnot. But I bet her hair and her dress will end up in the game.

Hair seems like it would be the most complicated design based thing for this as tenticle hair only really warrants itself to so many styles.

There better be a male and female dreadlock option though.

An interesting tidbit was after he said it was a 4 v 4 online shooter .. he then says they are playing it LAN style on the show floor ... I reallllllly hope they have lan functionality for this game for EVO or other gaming tourneys lol maybe MLG.

Also have they stated if this game will be 2 player splitscreen to play online together ? Would be cool if I could get online with my wife and play against other people.
 
The more I see this the more interested I become. I really hope there's some kind of splitscreen play (like MK8, 2 players can play splitscreen online simultaneously), Nintendo seems to be the only company that cares about couch play these days. Thank god indies are at least still supporting it.

If they could do 2-4 player splitscreen online, this would be one of my most wanted games. Looks like a blast to play.
