Splatoon (Nintendo 4x4 team shooter, Wii U, 2015)

For an apparent impartial outlet the BBC is shockingly anti Nintendo and I have no idea as to why. Beef that the NES killed the BBC Micro or something?

Their tone is very much, "Nintendo is for children, and I am not a child, nor do I have or want children, so this is not for me, and probably not for you either."

::Shrugs:: That's the general tone most press outlets have regarding Nintendo.

Or just the interns they send to E3.

And peole wonder why nintendo are cutting the press our and doing direct videos aimed at gamers. The press (most of them anyway) have cometely failed to properly report news.

Take that BBC article I posted for example. Did five things he learned from e3, one being diy games, and didn't even mention Mario maker. I had to tweet the author on that one.

I got to speak with Bill from nintendo at E3 about this game having a single player campaign, and even though he said they got nothing to show "right now", im confident by the way he said it something will be included.

Just the thought of these mechanics with some amazing boss fights have me salivating.

"Nintendo seems to be doing alot with female characters, pah, its too bad those games are so silly amirite?"

If thread posts equated to game sales maybe Platinum Games titles would sell well.

Hopefully B2 sells a shit ton. The game looks great.

Wished Splatoon was releasing this year instead of next cause they can benefit from the hype plus for more games are coming out next year.

Has there been any talk of different game types or any SP campaign? I'm more excited for this than any other shooter (other than Far Cry 4, for completely different reasons) at E3, but I can definitely see it getting old if it's just one game type.

Yes to both things, they are just not in the game yet. It'll come along with new weapon types and stuff.

I got hands on with this at the show. It was fast, fresh and fun. The paint/squid dynamic is awesome.

I have a feeling there's quite a bit of strategy under the hood in terms of painting walls and tactical squidding.

What would happen if you splattered an enemy's back so that they had a small amount of paint on them (the GT video says it takes 3-4 hits to die), and then turned into a squid and "hid" inside that splat. Would that be a good (maybe optional) addition to the gameplay?

As long as you're on the enemy's back it's very hard to see you and take you out, and you could potentially get a free ride to their side of the map, at which point you pop out and start spraying the place like mad, and maybe some of your teammates use the instant jump function to join you.

You could also just wait for them think they're alone in their own corner of the map and then jump out and take them out, leaving you free to spray that corner of the map with nobody around to interfere.

The tradeoff, of course, is that you're basically "out of the game" for the duration of your "ride".

The last thing Nintendo wants to do right now is have to compete with halo, battlefield, call of duty, and destiny at the same time. 2015 will be a great fit for this game.

*nudge, nudge*

"For everyone clambering endlessly for new series and characters from Nintendo's internal studios, here it is. Splatoon is the game you've been shouting for. Just make sure you actually play it."

Edit: Heh. :)

There will be Halo, CoD and probably Battlefield next year too though. I wouldn't be surprised if there will be some Destiny expansion too.

Did they ever show/talk about what happens when you shoot someone who's swimming in paint?

If someone is swimming in paint of their own color, they are invisible to the enemy (other than ripples from movement), but are definitely still vulnerable. I'm pretty sure I saw a few people in squid form being taken out.

To be fair, they'll have to compete with all of them but Destiny next year anyway. But yeah it's ok if this comes out next year, they have Mario Kart and Smash for multiplayer stuff in 2014

Not if the game comes out in the first half of 2015 as Nintendo has announced... but who knows there could be a sudden delay.

I really need to stop reading gaming articles. A gem from Arstechnica:

Even better, the headline: Preview: Smash Bros., Splatoon ignore Wii U GamePad for the better

The cherry on the cake:

To summarize this nonsense: "Collecting dust" is trending again, Arstechnica are uninformed, probably didn't play Splatoon and therefore don't know that you aim with the gyro sensor, the map is essential to your tactic and you need it to launch yourself from the spawn point to any other point. /r
To be fair, the devs said you'd be able to turn off motion controls (so pro controller usage) and you could easily play this game on Wii remotes + nunchuks if that control scheme was offered (press + to view map, then aim and shoot at the teammate you'd like to super jump too). That being said, I'm pretty sure most people will be playing on gamepad. It just makes more sense to me right now.

Voice chat has been confirmed.
Hmm, I wonder who he talked to though. I recall the devs being iffy on the issue while demoing it on stream.
Yeah I don't know if what he said got lost in translation. During the Treehouse stream, they made it seem like full on voicechat is either completely up in the air or not likely.

As much as I like pointer controls I don't think they would fit here. You aren't shooting in a straight line. The paint/ink is arcing and the goal isn't to kill other players so really accurate aiming doesn't like it would be required. Could be wrong and it would be idea. However if this is meant to push the gamepad (from the map and getting back into the action really fast) I don't see them adding it for that reason.
You can just aim up with the Wii remote. It'd be exactly like the Gamepad now.

I think you might be more vulnerable in squid form? There was speculation you were easier to kill that way.

Some thoughts I shared to a post made on the IGN Splatoon thread.

I think in the short-term, they'd be more successful with a Mario-branded Splatoon, but in the long-term this is the right decision.

That last sentence boils down my view in a nutshell. Given how much Nintendo pushed Splatoon during E3 I don't see them shoehorning Mario in to increase sales. Maybe he'll be an unlockable surprise, I have no qualms with that. :) Splatoon is out there and wacky, no doubt it leaves many scratching their head. The Wii did the same thing (even more so) when it was revealed. This carried forward to the Wii U and with the tidbits revealed for next-gen Nintendo I see them traveling farther down their own path, continuing to distance themselves from the other console makers**. The best thing about Splatoon is the amount of polish it'll receive before release. I heard the devs say they hope to have it release in the first half of 2015 (I wouldn't be surprised if it falls to the second half, you know, Nintendo). Compare the Mario Kart 8 reveal to release. No bull shots, the game went nowhere but up.

** Or perhaps The Big N is on the same path they've always been and it's the other console makers who went down a different path.

Yeah, I think that's how the game works. When you're in human form, you take more hits to kill, but in squid form you probably just take one hit, because otherwise it'd be weird to shoot the ground and not have it immediately change into your color like it always does.

I'm thinking Nintendo is aiming for that Titanfall slot next year, right around March. Is Xenoblade X still scheduled for Japan 2014? If so, I think if they could get that to the West by late January/early February, and follow up with this in late March, it would help space out Nintendo's first half of the year, which is always notoriously dry.

*Does best Native American from The Simpsons voice* do yourself a favour, don't look at this.

According to one count, Nintendo is leading the way with playable female characters, albeit in games that are a little on the silly side.

Read: Nintendo is doing something progressive, but we can't give them credit for it.
And no mention of Mario Maker in the DIY section of the article? It's rather cringe worthy how the writer tries to go out of his way to acknowledge Nintendo as little as possible

There could definitely be a mode or a single player section similar to the levels in Portal 2 which had you painting parts of the environment with white paint in order to move around.

In this case it's: splatter paint up a wall or in some other hard to reach area, swim through it as a squid, jump out and land in new location. repeat.

This game really needs 4 player splitscreen. It's downright criminal that the devs are only aiming for 2 player. There's just so much potential for this to be a party game.
Anybody still have the toys? Mines broke. :(

Come to think about it asuper-soaker themed zapper would be rad.

I kept skipping over watching this trailer until todays thread about best game showed at E3 and then watched the video after almost everyone on that thread said Splatoon.

Anyways, after viewing it, yeah it looks like awesome fun especially if I can co-op locally with someone and still play online.
