Splatoon (Nintendo 4x4 team shooter, Wii U, 2015)

Reggie quote from an interview that someone just made a thread for a sec ago:
We’ll be showcasing more depth. All we’re showing at E3 is the four-on-four multiplayer, but the developers have a lot more modes that they’re working on and that they’ll be revealing in the future.
Sounds like they know what they're doing.

Given its prominence at E3 and the "1st half of 2015" release window, I would bet this is Nintendo's planned next major-ish release after Smash this holiday.

I like how Nintendo finally makes Mario paintball like I've seen suggested a billion times and it's potential is even greater than we could've even imagined. Kudos Nintendo. Kudos.

I saw that quote in the interview's thread. That's a good sign.

Goddamn, this game.

From the same interview:
GamesBeat: Is there a single-player campaign?

Reggie: We’re not showing single-player, but as I said, the developers have a lot more modes coming.
GamesBeat: I’ve seen quite a few games that have multiplayer only, is why I ask. In some ways that seems like a good way for smaller companies to cut budgets and save time. But it also seems like it’s a direction gamers are going in.

Reggie: I’d disagree on that last point. I think gamers want a full-featured experience. I think it’s actually a mistake to cut out modes. Now, certain games, in the way they’re conceptualized, they are what they are. I played Rainbow Six: Siege, Ubi’s five-on-five game. The innovation there is that it’s a one-shot kill. Now there’s strategy to it, which makes that interesting. I don’t know if they’re going to have a mode where all of the other entities are non-playable characters. That doesn’t seem like a lot of fun to me. I think it needs to be that online multiplayer to bring it to life.

So it depends on the game. But in the first-person shooter genre, I would argue that not having a fully featured campaign mode, in this day and age, would be a bit of a mistake. Even though all of the hours played are likely going to be in multiplayer.

He avoided directly answering if there's a SP but the next question it sounds like there definitely will be.

SP in my splatoon?

Is this a $10-15 downloadable or full retail? The concept is fresh and looks like a blast but they're going to have to pack it full of content. Look at a similar wacky shooter, Garden Warfare, and the sheer amount of content, customization, and so forth that game has and it was still I think only 40 bucks. This admittedly brilliant gameplay mechanic in Splatoon might get boring quick unless the game is packed with shit to do.

I think the first impression went over so well, they are likely going to pack this with much more content. Nintendo would love to have another staple franchise on its hand. They understand the first game for this must deliver in value and entertainment.

Sometimes I keep forgetting that Reggie's knowledge of games extends beyond being a mere PR mouthpiece. He knows his shit well.

Does anyone else wish that this was called Mario Paintball (or something) and had the typical Mario Kart/Party/Golf etc. cast of characters?

I don't know why but I'm excited as hell for this game, I know it won't happen but I wish Nintendo would let us communicate with out team via mic, it would be great.

Oh, okay. Thank you.

I'd never heard people call single player SP before.

Most people only call it that in contrast to MP (multiplayer).

Voice Chat is (maybe) confirmed. I have a feeling it's probably limited to friends only, but that just means I'll probably be friending everyone who gets on my team.

The devs didn't want to confirm anything either, but in the end, they pretty much confirmed a single player campaign, 1 vs 1 local multiplayer, tons of modes, tons of maps, several weapons including sniper rifles and shotguns, custom load outs, customizable characters and all that stuff. In a "we're currently thinking about", "we believe a game like this needs" kind of way. But I get why they didn't want to make any promises, because this is a 2015 title and things might change.

No, I like that they're new characters. Plus then there might not be a stealthy squid mechanic.

This is right up my alley, exactly what I wanted to hear.

Nah, I'd rather Mario Spin-offs be based around new characters like Captain Toad(I'm so pumped for that game)
We've got enough "Mario and friends do a thing!" spin-offs.

I'd be 100% fine if it was between friends, I'd just play with GAF and my IRL friends that have a Wii U.

I like the black character...oh...wait...there is none? Well then... nevermind.

But seriously, this game looks fun (and white) and colorful (kinda).

I love how the characters in this game wear large athletic sneakers and other neon colored athletic gear. Just got a great cute and sporty feel to them.

And the dude with the flannel button down and slip ons. Hipster squid

With the wide variety of accessories shown on the character models during the E3 demo games (different shirt/clothing patterns, male/female models, headphones, glasses, etc) I have to imagine that this game will likely have some degree of Inkling customization, letting you craft the look of your individual character (whether just in multiplayer, or likely carrying over to a single-player campaign as well) using a variety of (likely purchasable/unlockable) clothing options. Feels like a perfect way to lend some personal customization to a game that seems to be largely based around online play, which is a rarity for Nintendo outside of Mario Kart and Smash Bros. A bit more whimsical, but with such an early focus on team play I kind of hope that you can select your own team-color as well from a whole palette of options...probably not as likely for matchmaking purposes though.

My other wishlist as far as modes go would be, like, a special 1v4 mode where you have four inklings coating a map with one FLUDD-equipped player that can wash the ink away and also "splatter" the ink-laden players, so that the single player has the numbers against him but has a power-advantage over the group. I think it would make for some fun cops and robbers chase-style dynamics.

I think that some people have gathered the wrong impression, seeing the turf war footage coming out of E3 and somehow assuming that that's the entirety that the game has to offer. I'm fairly confident that Nintendo will have more in the final product than what was playable...in fact we've already seen as much with the weapon variety that was shown in the reveal trailer, since things like airstrikes and the sniper rifle weren't playable. I feel good about the likelihood of a single-player mode, the only question I have for now is environment diversity...that may or may not depend on what other sorts of play modes are available, though. The blank urban setting works well for painting the town with turf war maps, so I suspect that other modes will come with other environs.

Would also like to point out that all the drawings are overwhelmingly of the female inkling. she really resonated with everyone and nintendo did right to put her as the main mascot of the game.

Given how this game is supposedly coming out in the first half of 2015, I like to think they will have more than enough time to make more modes, maps, weapons, etc. Maybe they might even have enough time to take some of the fans suggestions/ ideas (or least consider them). Given how we can think up of so many ideas for this game, I believe that the developers will be able too.

At the mere thought of (the probable inclusion of) customization for the squidlings in this game gets me really, really excited. I don't know why either.

I like the boy one a bit more, I like his pony tail thingie.
Hopefully there is hair customization.
So i can give him Squidlocks.

It is not unusual for female characters to be more popular among fanartists. Overall, male characters are still more popular, though.

I love the female Inkling's design, btw. ^-^
