Does GZ not have Codec convos? Respect to complaints about the lack of dialogue in the gameplay demo and everything, but I'm still not sure why people are this worried Snake is going to be practically mute. He's going through a change, yeah, but I imagine hell still be quite a Chatty Cathy in spots.

There is no codec screen in GZ. BB receives radio transmissions during gameplay, and not a single in-game menu pauses the action.

I guess there will be a lot of tapes like Peace Walker and GZ where he talks a lot, I kind of wish the codec would return though, hopefully Snake responds to some radio calls during gameplay.

He is. His name is in the opening of Ground Zeroes. The reason Ludvig is on is because they decided to stop hiring Norihiko Hibino, the guy behind all the amazing background musics of MGS2 and beyond. Ludvig is great, but I really will miss Norihiko. Here is a link to Hibino's amazing work from MGS2. Enjoy.

thanks! man, i love mgs's soundtracks, ludvig seems to have made a great work in ground zeroes. can't wait to see what the duo does in phantom pain. Seriously, that scene looking over afghanistan with the music just gave a grandiose feel to it that it has stuck to me since thursday

I don't get it, why would they hire fucking Jack Bauer if the guy never speaks a word?

And I'm baffled by how people seriously expect him not saying much in the game just because they haven't presented any substantial dialogue yet.

My take on it: you play as traumatized Big Boss who doesn't talk too much at the beginning of the game because he has been in coma for 9 years and lost not only his arm but also his entire company, his comrades and his friends. This is why he doesn't talk at all in the hospital scene, and I assume most parts they've shown so far like the Afghanistan mission are from the beginning parts of the game.

There doesn't need to be a screen or any sort of gameplay interruption for Snake to take a call and hold a conversation.

Listen to Ground Zero's briefing tapes. He's pretty chatty, he just doesn't interject during monologues anymore after more than a decade of western criticism of Kojima's writing style. Also, Kiefer so far voices two other completely separate characters that we know of.

I hated CODEC because it's annoying that I can't replay conversations whenever and wherever I want, and it's annoying that I can't see when a new conversation is available because it means that I'm going to be calling every single contact every single time I enter a new area or find a new item or weapon or see or do anything even remotely new. And no matter what, you're always going to miss a few calls.

With tapes, all that bullshit is alleviated. When there's a conversation about Boxes, or Costa Rican fauna, or Columbian drug cartels, or Santa Clause, for example, a little [!] tells you that it's there. No more time wasted by the Codec system, no more conversations missed. Thanks, little [!].

Yeah the codec thing or tape thing doesn't really bother me...
I never really use either of them unless I'm completely stuck.
Which basically limits itself to the first play through :p

You're missing out on crucial aspects of the Metal Gear canon, like how Big Boss
still believes in Santa Claus and is really defensive about it.

yeah, that was the most drastic change from mgs2 to mgs3. after the opening convos, nearly all radio contact is optional. which is fine by me. radio during gameplay > pausing gameplay and showing faces on a static screen

Saw the gameplay. Wow! It's like your own personal recon simulator, the way I've always wanted Metal Gear to be. And that 1080p/60fps.... ummmm... delicious!!!

One thing I've noticed is that I'm not fan of the X-ray vision we've been observing this generation, it's clearly a handicap for limited game design.

That's so boring though. The best part of the Codec was that it felt real time, and you DIDN'T know how much was there or when you exhausted every possible conversation. Tapes/recordings/data logs are so overdone in videogames. Cheap way to give backstory. The Codec had more situational relevance, and felt like you were interacting with people on the other side of the mission with you.

RIP In Peace MGS Codec. No more time for you, gotta Fulton half of the Earth to build my Pokemon army.

Agree and disagree. I too felt the same way, that the beauty of the Codec was how every moment in the gameplay gave you something new to talk and learn... and I would still not complain about it if we still get the Codec as it was today, but ultimately, it was something that only perfectionist and those who really enjoy the character interactions in MGS would had been able to enjoy to its full experience.

Thinking back, I don't think many gamers were like us, who jumped into the Codec everytime we got a new item/went into a new environment to basically learn whether or not anything new triggered. I would not be surprised if more than half of the content put into the Codec flew past the majority of MGS players.

Really? I thought the best part of the Codec was the content.

That's basically what I meant. The content you were listening to felt like it was real time, not something taped for the player's listening pleasure scattered around a map. You're laying in flowers so you call someone and start talking about flowers. You're holding a gun, so you call someone and start talking about that gun. You eat a giraffe tongue, so you call someone to talk about the texture of giraffe tongue. It was an insane amount of voice work for optional and unannounced dialogue, but that's why it was so rewarding to seek out.

Well how many of the people who weren't interested in hearing Codec calls will venture into the menus to listen to them? A process than can either be even more disconnected from the experience if you do it at the main menu, or easily swept aside if you're doing it in gameplay. Either way it's not as satisfying a narrative device as the classic Codec is.

The fact that it's archived somewhere, and treated as an non-contextual thing makes it more likely for those tapes to be revisited by someone uninterested in it.

The problem (and good thing) about Codex is that it's 90% contextual, and that means unless you remember that specific moment within-the-game... you lose so much context of the conversation if you didn't actively trigger the Codec sequence. It's not something that's archivable if you missed it, because if you missed the moment, it's almost as if it's not happened at all.

I agree it's not as satisfying. I can understand why they do it though. It's probably easier to programme for ( no contextual triggered dialogues), less dialogue ( it would be jarring if some parts of the game had less contextual triggers than the other, and tapes allow Kojima to circumvent that jarringness ), and cheaper/faster to make, while allowing for that effort into character development to be made more available to the MGS player.

Top image is from the shorter version of the trailer shown at the Sony E3 conference. The bottom is the extended trailer. Notice the difference in his camouflage and how the guy behind Miller is missing in one of the trailers.

I wonder if certain characters rescued effects if they show up in certain scenes. This certainly leans in favor of us being able to choose our outfits, as they will no doubt bleed into cutscenes as they have in past MGS games.

Wow, nice find!

Yea, MGS Codec is by far the best codec.

The guy behind miller is the helipad worker guy?

i have mixed feelings about this tbh. on the one hand MGS has always been about dialogue and narrative no matter how convoluted things would become, but i'm getting the impression there isn't anywhere near as much in this one which is a huge shame.

but on the other hand, i really dislike keifer as snake. so in this case i think i'm OK with him being mute, the less he talks the happier i am. i know one thing for sure, this is probably going to be the first MGS where i skip cut-scenes and dialogue.

Good catch!

I understand everything you're saying, I just don't like it. :P

The fact that it's removed from those contextual circumstances makes the tapes less special. It's MGS just being every other game with tapes and backstory collectables. I'm not even saying the classic Codec is optimal, there's a better way to do it in-gameplay without staring at faces on a separate screen, but resorting to briefing tapes is not that.

To be fair, we don't know that the Codec, or indeed the contextual stuff, has been removed. I mean we still had the button in GZ that gave contextual prompts... even if there weren't many or nearly as in-depth.

I honestly thought that the radio button from GZ could be expanded/retooled into a codec button of some sort. Just add a radial menu with different contacts and call it a day. You get the content of codec, minus the pacing break and extra menu.

Also Ocelot does mention that he'll be available for radio support in the gameplay demo, right?

How the hell did you catch that :D
Looks like a different time of day too

The worst thing about this Fulton "everything" is that it's still not used for it's primary function - extracting operatives from the field. Snake should've been able to extract himself from any point on the map with these balloons, but no, it's not gamey enough, you have to make a run for it.

Yeah and he says something when Snake finds the intel on Miller's location. But he might only be around before Kaz takes over.

How fun would it really be if you could just insta-bail the mission at any point and place in the game? A great part of Metal Gear is escaping, it can be a lot of fun and just as tactical as the infiltration part.

Kiefer Sutherland must be being paid by the word for him to not speak during that video. I know it's been done to death but from when I have heard him speak it just feels.....off. If Kojima is doing this just to fulfill one of his dreams of working with Hollywood I'm going to be so disappointed.

True, I somehow forgot you could listen to tapes during gameplay, so I don't really mind about the codec not returning.

Now that you mention it, it's actually better this way, since you don't have to keep calling a character on codec over and over to get to a specific conversation, which I admit had its charm.

I kind of like Kiefer as Big Boss more now. I don't know why but I really enjoyed what we've heard from him so far. Now if he does speak a lot less because of the Hollywood billing then yeah, I'll be sad. But if it's really because of the new face capturing and he still does speak a fair amount I'll be fine.

So it kind of got lost at the bottom of the page but any thoughts on the Vita version of the MGS series? I want to replay them all again before MGSV but I was thinking about picking up a Vita and the only game(s) I haven't played in the series are Portable Ops and Peace Walker.

Who said you can't do it? just because they didn't talk about it yet doesn't mean you can't do it.

Maybe we can fulton Snake via his little "Tail", maybe, maybe not. Nothing confirmed or denied yet.

They said If you fulton a container you can stand on it and it will bring you back to Mother Base, but if you do that you'll abort the mission.

My body is ready

edit: holy shit they actually Fultoned a sheep in that video! lol

Hahahhaha, just saw it, holy shit man :lol :lol :lol

HD Collection on Vita is fantastic. I haven't played PW on PSP/Vita but I've heard decent things about it since you can assign the right analog. I highly recommend the HD console version.
