Shovel Knight |OT| The 8-bit adventures of Butt Butt Goes to Europe & Australia

Made it to Plague Knight. So far it hasn't been too hard. I can do a lot of mistakes on the bosses and still make it through. But I except it to pick up in difficulty soon. Spikes are evil though.

So I wake up this morning, and driving to work I see that this place has free beignets. So I swing in, and I get a free order of beignets, and think I'm all lucky and shit.

Then I get to work and open GAF and then check my email and realize I feel asleep roughly 7 minutes before I received the notification that my key was ready.

Goddamnit

How I so wish Nintendo had Cross Buy, even if it meant $5-$10 more.
Definitely picking up the 3DS version first, then will see about a WiiU version.
Actually I would have no problem paying full price for both if it supported Cross Save, alas it does not.

I hate to say it but...

This needs to become a franchise. Not in an Ubisoft or Activision kind of way, but I would love to see more. Hopefully it sells really well.

If you want to feel less bad (or worse I guess) the keys were actually up in the account pages way before those emails went out.

After 40min that felt like 5min I'm in love with it tight controls which makes dying my fault completely. Thats how it should be folks perfect so far only about 40 min in but will be replaying this like I do Megaman 2 for years.

This game is a perfect rendition and tribute to 8bit classics, much more than Duck Tales Remastered, Castle Of Illusion and probably the future Mighty No. 9, as it have its own identity and own mechanics instead of just merely trying to copy the originals. Plus it helps that Shovel Knight takes inspiration from the best 8bit games with the most elegant game design at their time (Mario 3 map, Megaman bosses, Duck Tales pogo stick, Castlevania secondary weapons, Metroid secrets and so on) and adding more modern game design elements (Checkpoints, Demons Souls risk/reward system, etc...).

I found this review very well done (Spoilers) :

That is a nice review. Looking like this will my Rogue Legacy of 2014. From Steam page it appears it is out tomorrow in Aust?

We finally published our review! It was so much work, cause I also had to make the template specific to reviews. Can I share it here or is it against the rules?

Don't know what I was expecting, but eShop just updated and no sign of SK. Any word on the release? Please don't pull a Nicalis/Atlus/Marvelous on us Yacht Club.

I'm with this guy:

For those still on the fence about which version to get (at least between Wii U and 3DS), I'd recommend the Wii U version. I've played both extensively at this point, and while the stereoscopic 3D in the 3DS version does look really great, the way StreetPass is implemented in Shovel Knight isn't all that compelling in my opinion. Plus, a lot of people don't like the 3DS's 3D, and without it on, the game looks significantly worse on the 3DS's low-res screen than it does in HD on the Wii U.

Seeing the fantastic pixel art on a big, beautiful HD screen and having the stupidly awesome Kaufman/Matsumae chip music soundtrack pumped into your ears via legit speakers just takes the already great Shovel Knight experience to a whole new level entirely.

Plus, the Wii U Pro Controller is quite easily the best official controller to play Shovel Knight with. It feels perfectly good on 3DS and on the Wii U GamePad, but the Pro Controller is the way to go if you can swing it.

That said, I did find relic selection to be most convenient via the 3DS's touch screen, but that's not enough of an advantage to recommend the 3DS version more than the Wii U one in my opinion.

Go Wii U if you can. Otherwise, the game is fantastic on any platform you can play it on, so you can't go wrong either way.

Looks like I'm getting the Wii U version tonight :)

The European release is delayed. No details on price or even date. You'll have to get it on Steam if you want to play it today. But not sure about price there either.

Ah, thanks. Friggin Nintendo. Might get it on Steam then, or wait since I like the idea of portable/off-tv play. I'll see what price it turns up at anyway.

The european version is still TBA. Incredible, after all this blind wait and delays, EU gets shitted on again for Nintendo platforms. First 1001 spikes, now this.

Hopefully the wait won't be too long. I'm sure YCG are trying their best to distribute it everywhere as soon as possible. Regional delays do suck though. The game's great! :(

I am pretty sure I saw it did support it but now cannot find it, so just to confirm, this does support Off Screen play on the WiiU correct?

If so then I believe I have changed my mind. Forgot I had off from work tomorrow thanks to our Summer Friday program, so portability is not the main requirement for first playthrough, so if I can experience it on a nice big screen, why not.

Ultimately it looks like I will just get it on both systems, but if it does support Off Screen on WiiU for sure, will pick it up for it first.

Yes, it supports off-TV play.

It pains me, for as much as Shovel Knight feels like these two classic series in its moment to moment gameplay, the changes it makes, in my opinion, kind of break the formula that has worked for oh-so-many years.
How did this doozy get through?

It isn’t all as bad as I make it sound, but the movement definitely feels odd. I personally used an Xbox 360 controller to play (as I reviewed it on PC), so I suppose that could be the case.
And I don't feel I need to say that it's a rather silly idea to play an NES-style game on the controller with one of the worst D-pads ever.

Alright, I'll stop nitpicking, but really?
