This game is ADORABLE AND AWESOME. I can't wait to play this at my friend's party this weekend. I had a blast playing by myself last night with the AI on, but with people it will be so much better.

I also highly, HIGHLY recommend Love Connection. It was mentioned on the last page and it is a fantastic game (AND ONLY $0.99!) The presentation is amazing, the story is adorable, and the way the game ramps up the difficulty is perfect. It's a really, really, really solid little indie game.

Bought Monsters Ate My Birthday Cake, played a bunch of levels, meet some monsters and their abilities, saw how the story is presented and the amount of charm on it... and I am hooked, its so good. Fan of innovative polished and fun puzzle games need this one.

Agreed, I am on level 39 and its damn good. I would love to see more gameplay mechanics thrown in more often, but aside of that, the presentation is striking and the line gameplay is really polished and open ended.

Would you say it's a challenging game? I was watching PG's video and it seemed kind of easy. Granted, those were the early puzzles.

Well, it's important to make the distinction of whether or not one played with all the idols on or not. They drastically change the game and its mechanics. I could see how one would argue it's bland with the idols off, the game is simply too easy, and skill isn't a factor. But with all the idols on, enemies are smarter/faster/deadlier and each one you kill explodes in to ticking bombs, you're being chased from every direction, with bullets flying everywhere, and said bombs exploding everywhere. Killing an enemy might create an opening, or it might corner you when the bombs go flying towards you. There's a lot more game to it with all the idols on, and the mechanics of there being 8 or so unique (and they are unique) weapons that you can mix and match two of to create various styles of gameplay is pretty great. Do you want long range, medium range, close range, fast, slow, focused fire, spread fire, etc. And then you have upgrades to said weapons, and the various challenges which getting a perfect score on often requires extremely great reflexes and aim (I think getting a perfect on one of them took me a good 2 hours / 20+ attempts).

i played with all the idols except 1 on ( i forget which) and i thought the combat was bland as well, i loved the music and narrative, and more then anything the whole end part of the game which made me love the game a ton, but i felt the combat was by far the worst part, the combat was just uninteresting to me, I finished all the challenges and played on PC if it matters at all

Frost, you were absolutely right. Monsters Ate My Birthday Cake is so good. I haven't even played that much but I already love the game
Charming visuals, polished presentation, simple easy controls, fun puzzles, lovely little details like the character bios...it's a great game, well worth the $5

I'll post more detailed impressions later

Super Pixelander and Square Siege are two fun free releases to check out, I'm enjoying them as well

Mine Quest (free), seems like it might be a decent time waster if you enjoy the exploring aspect to Dungelot, this looks to expand on that in a fairly decent way. It has huge spanning levels instead of tiny multi-level dungeons. So you get a single 80x80 level instead of 50 8x8 levels or whatever.

It still has occasional enemies mixed around, that work like in Dungelot 1, and it also has a crafting system where the blocks you break give you resources to craft better items from recipes you find while exploring. There's an overworld that acts as a hub with different continents to explore, each continent containing a bunch of mines (with large explorable maps). There's even items to collect and turn in, and you gain levels and find gold etc.

The F2P aspect seems to be mainly an energy system, that's not horrible if you're just looking to waste a little time now and then (to me playing this sort of game in a 8-hour stretch straight would just be boring anyway). 200 energy (they actually start you at 500 so you get to play a bit before running down), and you can find more energy while mining, and it recovers fairly fast. So maybe worth a look if you enjoyed the exploring / uncovering tiles aspect to Dungelot / Disco Zoo as much or more than the rest of the games.

I started this yesterday, and so far I'm liking it quite a bit.
I'm a sucker for mining games, and this seems to be hitting the sweet spots. :)

Also, already mentioned it before, but check Pocket Mine out.

It's F2P, and one of the most addictive mining games I've ever played. Have been playing for 2 months straight.

Been looking for monsters but dont see it; not even search

I live in Europe so is its between 4 or 7 hours less than on the USA. I get games first (for a change). But maybe if you cant see it is because is by Cartoon Network and they may not publish it on every country due to legal issues.

Been playing more and I can say its one of the best puzzle games on the AppStore. The monsters and their abilities and the level of charm is outstanding.

I guess is time to add 99 Bricks Wizard Academy to the OP since everybody really likes it?

I will be bumping this until TuneSmith sees it. It would be a real shame to have such a fun game like 99 Bricks get lost in the swarm of mediocre games on the AppStore...

And a little warning: the game released yesterday, JELLIES! shares more things with freemium games that it seems. Proceed with caution if you think is more akin to a premium game (its 2$). Proceed with caution: endless mode costs another dollar (or have two facebook friends buy and install the game) and there are also IAP for power-ups and revives.

Long iOS hiatus again. Trying to catch up.

Quadblaster is awesome. Like Tilt To Live but simpler and more about blowing things up. F2P is not obnoxious.

Darkin had me peeing my pants with excitement as it appears to be a straight Dungeon Raid remake - but it hasn't grabbed me yet. I think I need to unlock more stuff and start chasing high scores/difficulty to get back into it.

edit: just grabbed Sky Force. Seems like a GREAT shmup. Graphics are really amazing - upgrade system seems like a F2P grind but I'm unable to find any IAP in the game yet at stage 3. It has them, I'm just unable to find them apparently? I'd get a point doubler or something for sure - though the game could really use a self-contained arcade mode without persistent upgrades.

My longer Monsters Ate My Birthday Cake impressions:
Successfully Kickstarted over a year ago, Monsters Ate My Birthday Cake is a charming new puzzle game, the debut title of SleepNinja Games. While it shares elements with other games in the genre, Monsters stands out due to its colorful cute visuals, a narrative, varied mechanics, and just offering a fun polished puzzle adventure experience.

While many puzzles games are simply a series of challenges, Monsters Ate My Birthday Cake presents its brain-teasers withing the framework of an interesting story and design more akin to an RPG than your usual puzzle game. You play as Niko, a young boy who wakes to find his birthday ruined when the nefarious Boogins steal his precious cake. This theft sets him on an adventure across the various areas of Gogapoe island, where dangers and new friends await. Most puzzle games would be content with a simple string of levels, but Monsters lets you explore Niko's village, take with villagers for side quests, visit shopkeepers along your journey to purchase new items and outfits: a fleshed-out structure that adds purpose to your puzzle solving.

But the meat of the game is obviously the puzzles and in that regard, Monsters Ate My Birthday Cake delivers a polished array of challenges. Niko and the monster friends he meets along the way each have their own unique abilities, useful in their own way: pulling and pushing blocks, an obstacle- and enemy- crushing ramming dash, a shriek that destroys obstacles and stuns enemies, and more. You have to use these abilities in conjunction to open blocked paths, avoid or defeat the varied Boogin enemies, and collect coins, keys, and pieces of cake. The enemies also add their own puzzle element, as one must rush at you when you enter its line of sight, another may patrol an area, or unleash a shriek of its own that disables your special abilities. Figuring how to move through the levels, how you need to work together, timing and syncing your movements makes Monsters Ate My Birthday Cake a fun game, and special objectives such as not using a certain abilities or not killing enemies adds extra challenge and replay value.

Personally I think Monsters Ate My Birthday Cake controls well; you simply draw your character's path and double tap to activate your abilities. The game is easy to play, allowing the visuals and overall polish to shine. From the character bios in your journal and the notes you find along the way, to the charming aesthetic, to the varied puzzles and the game's RPG-esque elements, to the story framework that ties it all together, Monsters Ate My Birthday Cake is a complete wonderfully-crafted package.

Does Love Connection end after chapter 40? I got there but just wanted to check, because it isn't entirely clear

Been playing lots of Clash of Clans and Castle Clash.

Clash of Clans is the better game IMO, more polished and has a much better ranking system.

Castle Clash is different enough to be fresh though, so it's fun to play while all my shit is upgrading in CoC, and when I have an active shield.

So the Rhythm of Fighters have a lot of $3 character dlc. Are they just early unlock keys or can you unlock them in the game?

Those are expensive for dlc.

You have to buy them. They're geared towards a play style or as support, for example Hawk girl has high Defense and so is supposed to be good for new players, while Iori I think has crazy low D so he's a more difficult player.

I quite like Rhythm of Fighters. Fun if silly and really hoping we get more songs and fighters.

As for the song packs, are they just songs or do they have backgrounds and stages as well? Like the Metal Slug tracks, is it set in Megal slug stages?

Rhythm of Fighters just got released.

Bought it. 69p in the UK store. I'm a huge King Of Fighters fan. Shame that it's only KOF 97 that's available on iOS.

Anyway:

1) Upon downloading the initial game from the App Store (approx 40MB) once you start the game for the first time there is a mandatory extra download of about 230MB that must be done before you can start playing. Wifi download only or the download fails.

2) A very easy tutorial in which you touch/flick/long touch/long touch + flick in time with the music that plays (from different Neo Geo games),

3) As you play the a battle between two fighters from SNK games takes place. The better and more in-time you do with the notes then the more attack your character (Kyo) dishes out. These attacks deplete the enemy's energy bar. Defeat it to zero and you get a KO and the stage is clear. Mis-time or miss the notes and then vice-versa happens.

So far I'm really enjoying it. GREAT music. And at 69p it's a steal!!!

Hey GAF!

Just released my first game for the iPhone and iPad. It's called Overlap Tap and it's a game of concentration, dexterity and stamina. It's designed to be simple to play but challenging to master, and great for killing some time throughout the day. It supports social media so you can share your scores with the world. Please give it a try and if you like it please give it a review on the Appstore, it helps tremendously.

BONUS - I'm giving away a $10 iTunes giftcard to the first person in the world to get 5000 points! I designed the game and the best I've managed so far is 3200. Good luck!!

those dlc are not neccesary to enjoy the game, could help you to pass some songs, but im aren't necessary, same with supports

the music tracks are worthy since the songs are awesome, except the remix of esaka? which sucks

Hi guys, I very recently acquired an iPad Air. What are the most essential game apps that I absolutely must have on it? Preferably for free, or at least very cheap.

Game is fun, but the difficulties seem a bit unbalanced. Doesn't feel like I'm getting more points for difficult mode?

Also several times the game will end and the ad appears so suddenly, I'll click on it instinctively without realising. I guess that might be good for you though?

Hearthstone is wonderful for short diversions, one of the best games Blizzard has released in the last decade. Free, and if you stick with it, you never need to spend a cent on it (money only shortcuts time). Plays especially great on the Air tablets.

The ad timing isnt intentional, and you do get more points for higher difficulties and more bars but I may need to tune it after I get more data. Thanks for playing!

I made sure to get Hearthstone first, since I'd heard how great the iPad version was. Thanks for the rec anyway.

Now THAT looks like my kinda gig! It's nearly the right price, too!

Hey everyone, I have really wanted to get Chrono Trigger for iOS ever since it launched, but held off before due to space constraints, but now I am really tempted to jump in. Just wanted some feedback on the controls specifically or if there was anything those who have or had it disliked? Thanks!

You need to spend 1000 stars before IAPs unlock.
There's a double stars item IAP, a remove the ads IAP and currency (stars) IAPs.

Wayward souls isn't an rpg. Bastion isn't really either. Fun action rpg is the recent battle heart legacy. It's kinda like diablo with multi job systems that allow switching and skill inheritance. Aka you can make broke ass dudes.

Thanks for the recommendation. Except for archers being a huge pain this game has been fun so far.

As a SNK fan and Neo Geo candy cab owner I feel I need to buy Rhythm of Fighters. Hope it taps the nostalgia right and is not aimed at the newer Pachinko game fans... Who are basically old fans who got gross.

There's a possibility that the Monsters Ate My Birthday Cake used plagiarized art

That's not plagarism though is it? If he was directly lifting assets then yes that's plagarism. This guy seems to have ripped off the art style for sure, but he doesn't seem to have directly copied the stuff. Disingenuous but not immoral IMO.

I figured it out. Ended up buying the doubler/ad-removal/star pack. I should end up getting some serious mileage out of this one. Looks like you've enjoyed it too judging by the leaderboard!
