I dunno, I still feel like actually wielding an element is a lot different than understanding physical technique. But at least that's a decent explanation? I guess who really cares at this point. He's a cool villain regardless. The only thing that matters is his motivation (how they decide to handle it).

I forget the name of it but fighting like Ty Lee does is pretty similar to Airbending.

Sorry, I haven't read through the whole discussion, but here's my take on the Zaheer thing.

I mean think about it, he was dangerous enough to be locked up without bending. When he did bend, it didn't really seem like he was using any kind of traditional style. I imagine he could have been testing out the waters a little bit in his cell before the guards showed up. Mainly, I'd guess that he just combined airbending with his own previous fighting style.

Episode 4 & 5 of Legend of Korra will premiere on July 11th in a one hour special.

Hmm I hope this is more of Nick doing this in response to the episodes leaking than them just trying to burn off the show as fast as possible
Even so it looks like Book 3 should be finished by September at the latest
Should be interesting what sort of ratings the premiere got when they are released in the morning

I hope I'm not the only one who's glad that we are going to get aggressive airbending this time rather than just stuff used for dodges and defense, at least that's what I hope. Also airbending antagonist is great after two waterbending ones.

Ish going down in the Earth Kingdom is super obvious. I actually thought they may have been too forward with some of it.

Yup. Zaheer moved with a physicality that we have only seen in Korra when it comes to airbending.

Is that really burning through them fast? If they were showing them this week then sure but it's still just 2 episodes every 2 weeks. It's the same pace as every other season except for the 3rd episode in the first week.

So, I was watching Korra with my girlfriend, and when the Earth Queen was on screen, she started freaking out. She's really into Chinese culture, especially the last empress of China. As the Earth Queen showed her long fingernails, exhibited her domineering personality, and started focusing on the garden, she became even more excited.

Anyway, it's clear the Earth Queen is based off of a real historical character, which is pretty cool. Here's a picture of them side by side.

Can someone translate this for me?

Oh boy. It makes sense too, maybe this season will have the Earth Kingdom erupt into a republic like what occurred after the death of Empress Cixi in China.

Not really feeling Book 3.

Villains look really cool and the plot looks intriguing but I'm starting to hate almost all the main characters. All the romantic subplots and teenage interactions just annoy me.

I'll continue watching of course but every time they focus on the character's relationships I just roll my eyes and hope it changes to something interesting.

Romantic subplots? Most of those are gone by this time. They just poke fun at them every now and then.

All 0 of them? Well, ignoring
Korra and Asami

So, I finally catched up and have to agree with kiguel182. The new antagonists are fairly interesting and threating. I love how the not directly busted everyone out, but just gave them the tools to do it themselves. It really showed their abilities. Also the story of Mako and Bolins family was very touching, as well as the difference between Ba Sing Se and Republic City.

But I was annoyed at the little thiefboy as soon as I saw him, he is so annoying and predictable. And Korra again not capable of handling the situation she willingly created and failing to handling the Earth Queen. I know it was for humor, but why did the let Tenzin handle the recruiting, which was obvisously a bad idea after the first tries and hothead Korra the diplomacy?
Maybe it was just needs some more time.

Oh, but it was nice to see Eska back so soon. Hopefully she and Bolin meet again soon.

When it comes to Zaheer's abiltiy with airbending, I think he is just a prodigy. He drove a motorboat, but I think he was imprisoned some time ago (at least 13 years), before these failry recent things were invented. So he learned it very fast. Similary he could've grapsed everything he knew about airbending and combined it with his own inherent body abilities. He has to be a very tough guy, if he was on one threatlevel like three insanely strong benders. Despite him being a "normal" human he was imprisoned in this isolated prison with no less than five White Lotus guards required to bring him food.

So confirmation that Nick are still working on getting Book 3 up on itunes, still surprised they haven't at least put it up on their own site by now

well after three weeks nick will have aired 5 episodes of Book 3 compared to Book 1 & 2 which had 3 episodes by the three week point

I hope they are not literally inspiring on her, since the brutal character of Empress Cixi was mostly propaganda from the 8 powers.

Speaking of the Earth Queen, I had trouble making sense of the "my kingdom lost land" stuff. Obviously this is a source of confusion that goes back to ATLA, but what, exactly, is the relationship between Ba Sing Se and Omashu? The impression ATLA gives is that Ba Sing Se is entirely its own thing, and maybe Omashu is the seat of government of everything else or maybe there are a bunch of Earth Kingdoms. Was this ever explained, maybe in the comics? I suppose it's also possible that Ba Sing Se went out and claimed territory post-ATLA.

I don't think the relationship between Ba Sing Se and Omashu is ever explained in detail, but I've always imagined it as being inspired by the historical Imperial Chinese tributary system. Either that or possibly something more along the lines of European and/or Japanese feudalism. The maps in the series are clear that Omashu is at least nominally part of the Earth Kingdom and subject to the Earth King's authority, but it seems to have a great deal of autonomy. Presumably the destruction wrought by the War contributed to a break down of centralized authority over the Earth Kingdom's more remote provinces, as well.

The lost territory line refers to the former Fire Nation colonies, as Azula mentioned. They had been annexed by the Fire Nation during the War, were supposed to be returned to the Earth King, but were instead turned into an independent nation during the course of the (still ongoing) comics.

I totally forgot about this new season. lol. I honestly felt the way Book 2 ended would leave the story a bit directionless (if that makes sense) but so far I like where it's heading. The new threat looks to be a very formidable challenge. And serves that damn little thief right :p

well after three weeks nick will have aired 5 episodes of Book 3 compared to Book 1 & 2 which had 3 episodes by the three week point

I thought they both had 4 episodes in the first 3 weeks. Season 1 and I think season 2 had 2 episodes the first week and one episode per week after.

Korra and Asami

You have the Korra and the other dude romantic thing, and her moments with Asami relating to that and also the thieve and Tenzen's daughter.

It's not just the romantic subplots, the characters themselves are annoying me (excluding Bolin, but since he is just comic relief he gets a pass).

The thieve kid couldn't be more cliche if he tried and annoyed me from the start, Korra is still not doing anything right while still acting like the is always right, the fire bending guy is another archetype with his angsty persona. And Tezen goes from a really wise guy to a bumbling idiot from scene to scene.

I like the setting up they are doing but the protagonists just aren't doing it for me. Some of these problems were on Season 2 but I was hoping things would be better this season.

Also, some of the humour is also really strange and way more "anime like" if that makes sense.

hey guys how is season 3, I might end up watching it since I miss me some avatar
So far it's had a pretty strong start whilst fixing a few of the issues from Book 2 (notably certain characters are a lot more likeable now)
Much better pacing for the first three episodes
The villains so far introduced are pretty badass

Oops my bad they did air 4 episodes in the first 3 weeks for Book 1 & 2

Oh man I just came in because I freaked out for not seeing any listing on itunes. Glad to know it's just being worked on.

Which ones? I haven't noticed that, personally.

Who would have thought* that the
Dai Li secret police would still be a bad thing!

So predictable.
As soon, as I saw the Earth Queen (what a horrible character btw), I knew that she wouldn't help Korra, but take advantage of her and hide stuff from her. I don't know why she is pissed that much, but that's one way to introduce a new unlikeable character, I guess. Will make it even better, when she gets de-throned.

I like the way, where the story is going, though. New villians are badass, but I don't want them to overdo it.

Also
pretty awesome, that we got a new mind explosion person. I liked the character in the original series, because he was a mystery and those make up for a good character.

Ratings have come out for the Book 3 launch and they aren't the best It got 1.5 - 1.3 million viewers for the first three episodes of Book 3
For comparison Book 2 launched to 2.6 million viewers and 0.8 demo rating and ended Book 2 with 2.09 million viewers and 0.5 in the demo ratings

Korra was more balanced out with Asami. She comes off less rough and they have good chemistry together. Mako being awkward because the break up allowed him to be more vulnerable and less high strung and aggressive. His scenes with Bolin were also pretty heartfelt.

Tenzin had a lot of great moments. His speech to Korra was great. His moment with his family was also awesome. Pretty much everyone came across as more likable and the writers did a better job pairing people off that they had chemistry with.

So I would argue that the majority of the scenes had good character moments.

He's a cool villain regardless. The only thing that matters is his motivation (how they decide to handle it).

Keep in mind that he didn't attack them as soon as he got the powers, he likely trained in secret until he felt he was strong enough to take out the guards.

Also they had never fought an air bender before, so they didn't know how to defend themselves from his attacks,

---

I think episode 3 pretty clearly telegraphed that Zuko and Bolin's mom is the 4th prisoner.

Trained in secret.

Granted, two weeks is a pretty brief time.

As I already said, I think he is a natural prodigy for everything. He was jailed at least 13 years and motorboats can't extists that long since Satos cars were fairly new and yet he could drive it perfectly to attack the first prison. Also he is somehow in the same security level as three very powerful benders, despite being a non-bender.
A regular prison would've probably enough to hold him.

Sokka got decent with a sword in one day. Katara got really good at waterbending from a brief training period with Pakku.

I'm willing to just call Main Character Powers at this.

Though to be honest, given how he can recite air nomad history from memory, I'm guessing he's studied air bending philosophy, and he is so in tune with the teachings that a lot of the physicality just comes naturally to him.

^what he said.

Yeah sorry didn't see your reply. Was on my phone, hence the super brief post.

No problem. It's not always possible or needed to read all posts. I just wanted to point out, that I wrote something.

Veelks guess sounds about right. He could still be additionally a prodigy, though.

Btw. I took a quick look over the Platinum Korra thread. Where does the hostility towards this show come from? I mean, it's not MLP, the Korra fanbase is rather quite and some comments went cleary over disliking the show.

I hate the word prodigy being thrown around. It does not mean "Instant expert on something."

Intelligence in general is something that is highly complex and hard to define. But while it is true that some people are more in tune with certain activities than others, more so than anything, prodigies are just people who are capable of spending an inordinate amount of time on something. Mozart's ability in playing the piano weren't the result of him stumbling and randomly hitting notes, with the shocking realization that he inexplicably does it better than everyone else. As a child, he would spend hours upon hours just practicing. He's be so into it that he'd forget to eat, and he'd do it for days on end.

In most cases, there is nothing stopping any of you from becoming a prodigy on most things. Just stop what your doing right now, then do that thing, then keep doing it every day, all day for a few years, and then you'll be in the same sphere of talent as a prodigy. It's just a matter of focusing on something for an extended period of time.

So just labeling Zaheer's abilities a result of him being a prodigy doesn't say much. If the writers remembered that bending abilities come from having a certain mindset, and if Zaheer is the scholar that this dialogue has suggested him to be, then the only way he is a prodigy is that that he's a prodigious student in airbending philosophy, which has allowed him to control airbending once he got access to it.

That went completely over my head, but now you say it, this makes so much sense that it's actually hurt.

In what way? They showed a picture of Bolin and Mako's mom in episode 3 and she didn't have Combustion man's eye thing. Also if I understood the dialogue correctly, the airbender and combustion lady were dating (not married like Mako and Bolin's parents) not the earthbender and combustion lady.

This is incorrect.

While you are right to point out that being a prodigy does not make you an "Instant expert on something," it DOES mean that your aptitude greatly exceeds what is considered the norm.

I think we are correct in labeling Zaheer's bending mastery as prodigious. What he is able to do unaided in two weeks is nothing short of astounding.

He is not just getting by. He is a legitimate threat.

Other series prodigies:

Korra: Martial Arts
Azula: Fire Bending
Aang: Air Bending
Toph: Earth Bending

I have to say, I'm yet again impressed by Jeremy Zuckerman's work. The music that played when Korra was trying to get rid of the vines was beautiful.

I really wish Nick would release the soundtrack for Book 2.

I wish they'd release the soundtrack for A:TLA.

There are some really memorable tracks like "Agni Kai"
